I do not recommend Big Box Storage!!! They are over priced and not accommodating. When we first started with them, they explained to us how easy everything was, all you have to do is call and let them know you're coming. You go through your stuff, and if you decide you don't want something, the dumpster is right there to use so you don't have to take it back with you. Simple right? Wrong! When you go to see your storage, you find out the truth! To go into your storage area you have to make an appointment. You need to give them two hours notice. If you don't show up for your appointment or you're LATE they charge you, they also tell you that if you put anything in the dumpster it's a $150 charge. When you tell them that is not what you were told when you started using them they give you this speach about how they have a new owner and things have changed. Which I would have believed except the lady sitting at the counter kept smiling and giggling letting you know it was a line of bs that they tell everyone. I found them to be rude and over priced. We are moving our stuff to Extra Space Storage, prices are more reasonable and workers are pleasant to deal with. read more

This is my 2nd review of BBS in less than a week! This family owned, local company is one that deserves the spotlight for excellence! I had my very first Box delivered on a Fri, and by Sun after I quickly realized I would need more storage space! I called and spoke to Ian who was so friendly and helpful to scheduled another 2 units. In less than 24hr, I called Ian back at least 3 times with schedule changes and questions. Ian never made me feel like a bother, but instead provided me with a kind word, and genuine courtesy. This makes BBS stand out as the 2nd time using them - but it doesn't stop there! Today's delivery was made by Jeff, who called to let me know he was on his way. Once he arrived we touched base about where to place the units. The movers/packers had just started and once they surveyed my things for storage, they recommended I go with only 2 units instead of 3. Luckily, Jeff was still there and when I told him what they said, he expressed concern that he didn't want me to run out of room if he didn't place the 3rd box. He asked if he could do the same walk-thru so I showed him into the apt and pointed out all the items. He agreed 2 would be enough and informed me that a credit would be given back since I only needed 2. The fact that there were more units on Jeff's truck, meant he had a schedule to finish for other deliveries. However, instead of rushing thru and taking my request as is, Jeff wanted to be absolutely sure I wasn't making a mistake that I would pay for later. I am so pleased with the consistent customer service I've received from not only 1, but 3 different BBS employees! Thank you for providing a great experience and keep up the great work! 2/21/2023 - Just met Dez, the pickup driver who came to take my Big Boxes back to storage! Another kind and professional employee who called ahead of time to let me know he was on his way. I wasn't sure if I would be there for pickup and he reassured me that wouldn't be a problem. I made it to the parking lot just as he was loading the 2nd box so I introduced myself. BEWARE! DON'T USE FOR LONG DISTANCE MOVES I have never written a review on Yelp but feel this needs to be expressed! If I could give ZERO stars I would. Worst long distance moving company. They "forgot to send half of our stuff" and never reached out to tell us until we showed up to half of it missing. They forced us to pay all the same moving fees again as it was a 2nd shipment. We were given a "discount" to accommodate the mix up meanwhile once we got an invoice they also up charged us 33% line by line. All while holding our stuff. We even reached out to new companies to love the additional pods and Big Box Storage refused to accommodate that. This company is a scam! We had to get a hotel for a week and had to purchase another crib for our baby. DO NOT USE THEM. Worst customer service and ZERO accountability. I talked to Morgan daily for a week as our original shipment was delayed and never did they mention that the other half of our shipment was never sent. 2 1/2 month we finally have our stuff which we should have had in 2-3 weeks! This San Diego based company broke into my box while it was on their site and covered it with a contaminant. The pictures show how the locking face hinge was changed and some of the damages of spit, urine and more were evident. There is over 100 photos and video of damages. I filed with the police and was told to take these guys to court. An illness befell my lizard and he died, my dog and he died and then I became ill and hospitalized. Causing any litigation to be put on hold. Worst part was the police told me to post here. As if this is justice. Never use this storage facility. So much destruction as our whole family suffered acid like burns and sickness that doesn't deserve any stars at all on Yelp or anywhere. So much for morality in business. This company has no remorse. We used them 3 years ago while we had to empty the kitchen for remodeling. We're a few minutes from this company. It was great back then; the box is not large, but the convenience of having extra storage on the driveway was totally worth it. Delivery & pickup was free back then, even just for 2 months. It was totally a pleasant experience. Excellent phone conversation, and the driver was ultra nice. Now that we'll be moving, we thought about using their service for 2 months. Now they charge $99 for delivery for less than 3 months. No thanks.....plenty of storage units in the area, and 10x10 won't be much more as long as we just move boxes ourselves to make room. Unless you want a small convenient storage on the driveway for heavier items, shop around for self-storage......the box is tiny. read more

As far as storage goes it's the most reasonable of prices plus and aside a drive a bit out of the way easy to access your storage and no need to travel up flights of steps. Get it at your place to load and get picked up? Ok worth it. The actual storage site is at the end of a culdesac in an industrial sort of area. Well out of the way and somewhat hard to find at first but very private and easy to get in and out of. If you want to access your storage onsite they need a 2hr advance notice and you have a 2hr window to check in at the front office or you will be cited a fee. Negative would be again the distance away you have to travel, hallway to restroom is always dark as they keep the light off and such but that's it. Good prices, secure sight and they do care. Last time I went to my box it started to rain before I arrived. They put the boxes back inside to keep them out of the rain. Worth every penny. Oh also get the insurance. Worth it in case for $6 I believe. read more

This is the second time using Big Box Storage in the past few weeks. My first experience with the first driver, for both drop off and pickup was "meh." However, today Jeff was the delivery driver. Jeff did everything to accommodate my request of where I wanted the 3 storage boxes. He also double checked to ensure the hardware was in proper working order. Was going to update the review here a bit higher, but seems like Big Box likes to gaslight their customers, so I wanted to be a bit more clear here: For Rita mentioning their optional fee being listed on their website, I can confirm, it is not. Their DESKTOP site does mention that the items can be picked up or delivered to your new address, but it does not state any $600 fee for that. If it is there, maybe be sure to make it more prominent. Also, your MOBILE site does not have any of the same language as that on the desktop site, so that needs to change, along with the typo in your desktop first paragraph Rita.. As you may recall, all phone calls are recorded, so I'm sure you can find the part where I ask the rep that once I store the container, I can have my box delivered at any time..which they confirmed and did not mention the additional fee or that the box needs to be a "long distance box" I appreciate Jeremy stepping in to get the situation rectified, but after that horrible response to my review, I'd still advise anyone to look at Pods or Uhaul Containers instead. read more

UPDATE: After posting the review below one of the owners called me and was incredibly nice, and genuine. He explained the pricing increases were due to many factors of the pandemic, and I believe him. He offered a myriad of compromises and solutions for me, in an effort to make me happy. Brian went above and beyond to try to rectify the situation, and to me you can't ask for more. The only thing I think should be made clear, is it is VERY expensive to bust the weight limit, AND they won't weigh the box for you until they are ready to ship (I asked them to weight it immediately while I was still in town, and they would not, so I did not have the opportunity to lighten the load). If they would weigh the box up front so you know what you are in for, I think that would really really help. I still will tout their local moves over their long distance, but anyone that goes to the lengths Brian did to try to rectify the situation, deserves credit and a chance at your business. ---ORIGINAL REVIEW----- Don't be fooled by their good pricing up front. I would recommend them for local moves, but for anything further and their prices are highway robbery. When I got the box, it showed somewhere around $1500 for shipping to Oregon. 8 months later when I needed it shipped, they pumped the price to nearly $2100, and charge another $50 to pay by credit card (obviously you have moved so you can't pay by cash). On top of that, their 2000lb weight limit may seem like a lot, but it's easy to bust (as I did) and it's nearly $1 a pound when you go over. And of course they don't deliver it to your home, you have to move it yourself from one of their freight locations (of course, I knew this up front but the savings in shipping were going to be worth it. Now of course, it's basically a money pit). They will honor pricing for 6 month so be sure to get it in writing (I busted the time limit, so this was moot for me). My sister used them as well and also had a horrible experience on the shipping end, having to fight with them to honor their original pricing. Short story, use Big Box for Local, ANYONE ELSE for long distance. This is NOT what they do. For context, I work for a large nationwide construction company who ships large containers and equipment all over, and their shipping prices are 2-3 times higher than what they should cost. read more

Well our first experience with a portable storage company has been amazing. We went with Big Box Storage and we could not be more pleased, from my first contact with customer service agent Morgan I felt completely at ease. She explained the process from start to finish was great, she answered all my questions and even talked about some I didn't even think of, also the price couldn't be matched. I can't say enough good things about Big Box Storage! My wife and I sold our condo and are renting an apartment for a few months while we look for and buy a house. Big Box made the process of getting out of our townhome and into an apartment as easy as it could have been done. Obviously you acquire a lot of stuff in 11.5 years, and we couldn't take all of it with us to the apartment, so we split what we needed with what needed storing and it all went into the boxes! The process was as smooth as silk from the first phone call. I had assistance with the planning and scheduling and they even offered a promotion for three months with free drop-off. I got a confirmation call and we upped our request from two boxes to three with no hassle. Big Box only charges you for what you use. When the boxes were delivered the truck driver deftly maneuvered them into a single parking space so we weren't "those neighbors" and was able to provide me with padlocks at a competitive price. The boxes were large enough for even our bigger pieces and clean. Our movers were able to get everything we had Tetris-ed into two boxes, so we ended up not needing the third, and all three were picked up today while I was at work. This was so much easier, less expensive, and less hassle than the typical storage alternatives I was looking at. I set it up online, got a confirmation call, and the box showed up on time the day I selected. The delivery guy was very helpful and really took his time to get the box setup on an uneven surface right in front of my garage door to make loading easier. They showed up on the prearranged day to take the box to storage, and another really polite guy took care of it in minutes. I haven't yet tried out going down to their facility to remove/ad things to the box, but I bet they're on top of that process too. They have a cool little forklift which enables them to come down driveways that a big truck might have trouble with. Pricing was reasonable with several plans to choose from. I scheduled my access at 2pm which they give you 2 hours to access your storage. I got here at 3:39 due to an emergency that came up and this man gave me such a hard time and spoke to me in such a condescending manner like he was scolding me for not being here earlier. If you tell a customer you have 2 hours to access the storage that means 2 HOURS! You don't know People's situations and the last thing I needed after what my family just experienced is someone treating me like this. I don't owe an explanation to Paul. You can't beat having a storage box that you can take time to fill and organize your furnishings and belongings in and then move to the location of your choosing over a month time instead of renting a UHaul for just a few days for the same price. What a bargain! Also they really came through with their customer service when I wrote them about tire marks left on my driveway. After knowing what I wanted, I found Big Box Storage. They had everything I was looking for which was great but what was even better was the professionalism and customer service that I encountered. I'm in the business coaching and consulting business so I noticed these things right away. These guys were excellent throughout (I dealt with about 4 different employees). Where do I begin? We started storing our stuff with Big Box back in 2011 when circumstances dictated we move away from San Diego. We started with 2 units, and over the years we've been able to consolidate remaining items into 1. We've never had a problem or worry about security and the safety of our items. The BEST part of Big Box is the personnel. They totally rock!!!! At first I talked with Laniesha; she was so friendly and helpful and professional and knowledgeable. Although we never met in person, I felt like she was a friend (we exchanged Christmas cards every year she was there). I knew she would always be able to help. Now I have the absolute pleasure to be able to talk with Jeremy. He is also friendly, helpful, professional, and knowledgeable. Today he went above and beyond helping me. Thank you!!! I had to call back and spoke briefly with Morgan. She's also extremely friendly, helpful, etc. Thank you Big Box. I'm hoping we'll eventually be able to get everything out of storage. 10/29/2019 Update: 10 minutes after I published the previous review, Brian gave me a call and politely explained the policies and procedures of the company. He was very kind to take all the extra charges off my account. I have changed my review from 2 to 5 stars. Very polite and caring people! Will definitely use their company if I need to move again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While I really wanted to like this company (because let's be honest - everyone hates moving and the concept of having a box delivered and taken care of is really cool), I am left disappointed by the delivery policy this company has. I have just called to ask how I can schedule a delivery of my items to my new address (after 3 months of paying rent on time, etc.) and have been unpleasantly surprised that I will have to pay 81$ monthly payment + a 99$ delivery fee just to get my things back. When I chose this company back in August, they had a promo saying that the delivery fee is waived if you keep the rental space for at least 3 months, which I did, and now I will still have to pay a lot of money for the second delivery. "If you'll be storing for 3 months or longer, the delivery and pickup of the Big Box(es) is free of charge (a $99 savings)" - this is what was on the website. Of course, I should have studied the contract more but I just do not think it is fair to have such misleading marketing for their customers. Also, I was told that I will now have to pay my monthly payment to cover the entire month of November even though I only will be using the box until November 9th since my move in date is going to be November 7th. I find it ridiculous that they are not willing to pro-rate and reimburse me for the days that I am not using the rental anymore. I would have been OK with paying the delivery fee (again - read the contract), but I just do not think it is right to take 81$ for the full month when I am only using it for 9 days. I hope management can help me figure this out so that I can potentially update my review. read more

i'm so grateful to have big box helping with a very hard move. i spent a lot of time checking other places. i was able to get a couple specials, from big box. i've called them several times with requests & questions. i've mostly spoke to morgan. she has gone above & beyond helping me out. she is so kind, helpful. i have spoke with jeremy also. he too is very helpful, kind. i started with 3 boxes, now i'm up to 5!!! the delivery guys are the best. box gets placed exactly where you want it, & is made sure it is leveled perfectly. i've had to change my pick up date so many times (due to legal issues), big box com. has been so nice about all my changes. their service is quick, when you ask for delivery or pick up you 9 out of 10 times are able to get dates & times you want. i recommend doing the 3 month rent term, really good cost saving deals. i never encountered any hidden fees. all my questions were answered. for as much as i call them, they are still so nice. i can't find anything negative to say about them. you won't find any other stress free way to secure storage. now if i could just find a place to live..... read more

The entire Big Box team were fantastic throughout the entire process, communication was great and we could not be happier. From the initial quote/information getting process all the way to when we emptied our container, Morgan and Jeremy were outstanding. Money grubbing moving company!! If there's an extra fee, they'll stick it to ya. First the good -- the box was delivered on time, the person who delivered the box was friendly and polite, and showed me how to work the locks. Very positive experience with the box drop-off. Then, the BAD -- 2 things: 1) I received "late notice" letters for fees that I thought I had already paid, and the amounts I ended up paying were inconsistent with my contractual terms; and 2) EXTRA EXTRA fees when you want your stuff delivered (and this included an extra fee to have your stuff delivered within 5 days' notice -- 2 days shy of their 7-day notice policy -- even though they told me that they had the means and availability to do it at the time that I requested, but that they wouldn't do it without an additional EXTRA FEE.) I was told by a person proclaiming to be the manager that the company had the availability and could make the delivery on the date that I requested, but refused to do it without MORE MONEY. I paid per my contract, including an extra $250 for time not used, and the least they could do is deliver my things at the date requested, since it does not cause them any hassle to do so (as I was told, they had the means and availability to do that). Now, I assume that the purpose of their 7 day notice policy is to charge a fee to those that require immediate delievery of their things, so that the company can immediately alter its schedule for the customer, and that the purpose of the policy is not to rip off customers, but I learned that it's actually the latter. I will not use this company again and do not recommend them. read more

The owner and manager of Big Box called me after he saw my review on Yelp. Before he even called me up, he looked up my file from a few months ago and found out what went wrong. He called because he wanted to personally discuss the issue with me and tell me how important customer service is to him. Apparently they take customer service very seriously. Upon looking up my billing statements, he found the $50 error. In my previous post you'll see that I called to find out why I was charged more than I was quoted and a very rude female employee told me to take a hike. In order to apologize for the mistake of overcharging me, he credited back my entire total to me. I am very impressed with how he handled this as I would do the same thing if it were my company. The Big Box Storage company is going to do great as long as this guy is in charge. I will use them again next time I need to store or move anything because I loved the convenience and service. read more

I used these guys for a few months to make moving out of my house easier. Their online deal, 3 month minimum = no delivery fee seemed to work better for me than a single month, since I wasn't sure how many months I was going to need it for. (Turned out to be 1 month + a few weeks, still saved a little money with the online booking discount) The guy that delivered the box was very polite and nice, even called to let me know right when he was on his way. Quickly walked me through the paper work and then delivered my box and showed me how to close it. The box itself was only okay. It was simple 2x4 and plywood construction. The two 'hook closures' didn't even work. the only thing keeping the box closed was having a lock through the loop closure on the front. The first time I went to get a few things from the box, I was dismayed that the facility that my things were housed in, while they were in a warehouse, did not have the capacity for me to be indoors while sifting through it. My box was sitting outside in the sun for who knows how long after I was through, which is definitely not a 'climate controlled environment'. Thankfully, I didn't have too many things that would have been sensitive to heat. The other thing, the loop for the lock was badly bent such that I had couldn't lock it at first. I had to figure out how to bend it down a little bit so that a) I could close it and b) I could get the stupid lock through. Since I was moving to LA I did ask about the cost of moving the box itself to LA. It would have been ~460 and then I would only get a half hour to unload it free. Since I have a shoulder injury, and don't have as many friends to call upon to help me in LA, I opted to hire a moving company instead. Kind of a mediocre storage experience. It does beat having to move things into and out of a truck on the same day though. For long term storage, I'd go with someone else I think. read more

I write this review years after I used them, but recently, I was reminded of these guys since my colleague is in a situation where his apartment is being sold and he's being forced to move out. In our industry, we must travel A LOT.. for months at a time (and the military folk who's looking into this can also attest to this). He will be gone by the time he needs to move out. He's just completely stoked that such a service exists. I used these guys' service when I had to be gone, and was between moves (the lease agreement was ending, and I had to move out, and my current place was in escrow, and I was going to be in the middle of the ocean). I recall seeing these guys' boxes all over SD, and called them up. A quick phone call later by a chill, funny, yet very informative representative, and all was set! They'll drop off the empty boxes, pick it up at a set time, store the boxes for you, and drop off the boxes at your next location; then pick up the empty boxes on your schedule. It all just.. works so seamlessly. The prices are reasonable, and their service is supremely convenient. I'm so glad they existed when I needed them. They have good people working there. All are very helpful (from the call rep, to the drivers). I wish these guys good business for years to come, as they are a great local company to support. read more

Big Box Storage definitely has a good business model. It is an expensive, yet somewhat convenient way to get your stuff from point A to an unknown , but soon to be discovered point B. I had to move, but didn't have a definite place to move into. I knew it wouldn't be too far away and I knew I needed a place soon, so why put it into conventional storage. Expensive, yet portable storage seemed like the way to go for the short 30+- day adventure. Touch my stuff once to put it in the box and then call to take away the box. Call to get it delivered to my future palace and then touch my stuff one more time to get it out of the box and into the new place. Well, I just got off the phone with the San Diego Big Box Storage folks and I have to say that I completely agree with Cristal G. The people are nice and they do show up on time and quickly at the beginning. What they do neglect to tell you is that they require a 7 (SEVEN) day notice to redeliver the boxes or they charge an additional $50 "expedite fee." After balking at the fee, they did admit 2 things: 1) They weren't really that busy and they could deliver the boxes the next afternoon; and 2) They were in short supply of boxes and would waive the expedite fee for me IF I could unload the boxes overnight and agree to a pickup appointment. Now I have 3 of these boxes at a total of $220 some odd bucks a month. I don't really feel that I should have to A) pay any extra fee for a delivery time that they can operationally handle; and B) wait 7 days so that I can have the contractually agreed to 3 days to unload. I mean Geez, you are already gouging me on the "rent" for my TJ constructed house. I could pay less for space at Fashion Valley!! Give a guy a break, or better yet, don't and let him rip you guys on Yelp! The only good thing is that I didn't have to rent a truck twice, and technically I only had to handle my stuff as much as I would have if I actually had known where I was moving. PLEASE NOTE: convenience has a pretty high price to pay with BBS. They had my stuff about 42 days and I am paying over $650 for the pleasure. They really should treat people a little better when they rent 3 or more boxes for over a month. Next time, I will make sure my wishy washy self has a proper place to move to and then Uhaul can steal my money for $49 a day plus a dollar a mile!! read more
