Everything about Big Boy is great EXCEPT for the elephant in the room of unisex bathrooms! So, not only do women have to compete with men in sports, but now for a clean toilet. There is urine all over the floor before the toilet. We have to step in it to pee whereas men are obviously aiming from a distance and missing entirely. Put urine back in the toilet where it belongs by restoring a distinction between restrooms! As a woman, I will stop bringing my family here until the restrooms are made great again! read more

Terrible service. We will never go back. Went in for breakfast, ordered the breakfast buffet and two drinks. Waitress helped everyone around us and we finally had to flag her down for our drinks. The table next to us (she obviously knew them) came in after us and got all her focus. They also ordered the buffet and she brought them to go boxes that they filled up after they ate to take with them. The buffet was awful - 3 varieties of powdered eggs, French toast to hard to even cut with a knife, rubber bacon, etc. And all that for $15.99! We got up to go pay and stood at the front counter for more than 5 minutes getting ignored until we asked to speak to the manager. In the meantime, the table near us with the buffet filled to go boxes hugged our waitress goodbye and walked out without paying a dime. Not a good look Big Boy. We told the manager what had occurred and he did not comp us anything. We will not be back to this location. Poorly staffed and managed. read more

It's the classic Big Boy I remember from years ago. I didn't expect gourmet food. The chicken fingers were yummy and my Greek salad was a good healthy choice. The classic Big Boy restaurant architecture is wonderful. Lots of space, comfy booths and somehow, they figured out how to keep down the ambient restaurant noise. Our server was friendly and the food came quickly. Note to owner: Please dust the layer of fuzz, clean the grease, and do some general maintenance. The place really shows the neglect. The padded booths had gaping holes with the stuffing coming out. How about supporting a local upholsterer and have the booths redone? read more

The wait staff I am thinking must take the blunt of the poor cooking in this restaurant. We have ate there 3 times now and I can tell you they are in bad need of cooks who know how to cook right. The first time I ordered an omlet, which consisted of a nice egg folded on the outside. Then you got the surprise on the inside...... it was stuffed with uncooked onions and vegetables. The meat was cooked but nothing else. Who eats raw, uncooked vegetables, especially onions in an omlet? the second time we were served a Swiss mushroom burger and it lacked the mushrooms. today we both ordered burgers. Swiss mushroom. The burger was fried to very well done - to the point where it was crunchy. We ordered medium well not burnt. My burger had the Swiss cheese and bacon instead of mushrooms. It had some type of white sauce on it about the size of a quarter. My friend had hash browns served with raw onions. if you really want to be known for your quality, get cooks that know how to cook. For us, 3 strikes and your out. We won't be coming back and we will not recommend anyone else eat there. read more

First and foremost it was clean! The service was good, our waitress Catherine was very attentive and quick. When we ordered, the place maybe had six tables, half of which were already eating. I had my mom with me and between the two of us we ordered a Slim Jim with fries and a chicken strip dinner....nothing that should take long....but it took 18 minutes to come out of the kitchen.... the good when it did arrive was hot, correct and good. The prices are getting a bit higher...they need to watch that...I use to love getting the salad bar, But it has gotten way too $$$. Went there tonight and ordered 2 burger baskets and a chicken tender basket for my daughter. I got half way through my burger and it was soggy and falling apart and absolutely dripping in grease and sauce could hardly taste the burger! I didn't even attempt my daughter chicken strips also dripping in grease and burnt! The fries were okay... this was a carry out order I did not dine in with this order. Worst dine in experience. The restaurant smelled... and not like you would want a restaurant to smell. The waitress was rude. I ate 2 French fries. They were cold and stale. The waitress didn't offer to get new ones. The manager was just as helpful. I told her I didn't eat the fries because they were cold and stale and she practically called me a liar and said "That's not possible. We haven't been able to keep up with all the French fry orders so they couldn't be cold." Then proceeded to take a dollar off my $11 meal. Every time we go we regret it. stopped in Mid-August. I remembered coming to Big Boys as a small child.....memories of good food and nice restaurants.....so I returned as an adult to a different restaurant. Boy was my memory wrong....they sat us on two booth divide in half.....i ordered a burger with 1000 island dressing which was not all that. my daughter and nephew had spaghetti which was good and wife had a steak and also good. We read the reviews and didn't stop before but decided to stop today. There are always lots of cars in the lot. The restaurant was spotless. The waitstaff was great. Teresa waited on us promptly. The meal was the best I have had, steaming hot omelet, hash browns done right, good pancakes. My husband had the strawberry waffle and he said it was very good. Waitresses were very friendly, attentive, and hard working. The restaurant was very clean. By Big Boy standards, though, the food was very poor. First, we waited almost 30 minutes for our food. When it finally arrived it was either cold or tasted reheated. The food was definitely not fresh. We will find another place -or another Big Boy- to eat next time. read more

Had to wait to be seated even though they were not busy. No one paying attention to what going on around them. Got pasta took 35 min then it was cold asked waitress to put in microwave she said the Alfredo is always served cold. She took it back warmed it up so then it was at least Luke warm. Garlic bread was good. Had to ask for more water wasn't offered. Second order of pasta spaghetti with meat sauce was luke warm lots of noodles not enough sauce to cover noodles. I have lived in Kalkaska for a year and I'm just trying Big Boy for the first time. From the outside it's not much to look at. I tried the chicken tenders and was very impressed. They were fresh and delish! The staff was very nice and attentive. The restaurant could use some maintenance however. There were several water stained ceiling tiles in the dining area and above the salad bar. I'm not sure if their were active leaks or what, but regardless they need to be addressed immediately. It's kinda gross to think about roof water leaking in to the soups and salads. The salad bar could use a good wipe down as well. There were soup stains on the inner ceiling of the salad bar which was 4 ft above the soups. Repainting or just wiping the salad bar would fix that issue. I also noticed a major draft of cold air coming from around the bottom of the windows in the front of the restaurant. Likely some caulk would fill the gap and reduce the draft significantly. All in all it was a good dining experience but there is some maintenance that needs to be done. Hopefully the manager sees this and can make the repairs as needed. The outside of the building could use a could pressure wash too. read more

I love this place! It's my favorite place to go for a meal. The manager (Kathleen) is always on top of everything, she moves from one area to another to help her staff wherever needed. The server's (Becky and Tiffany) work so well together, teamwork is definitely in place. Service was wonderful. Cody is a wonderful cook, he actually came out to make sure everyone's food was good. I stopped in for dinner on my way home from a volleyball game with my daughter. We arrived about 7:30 placed our order immediately, we waited about 30 min for a Big Boy and Waffle breakfast. The restaurant was not busy, no more than 7 other tables. And when the food arrived my fries looked and tasted like they had been sitting around for those 30 mins and the Big Boy sandwich was missing the cheese had almost no secret sauce and was very dry. I didn't bother sending anything back cause I was worried how much longer I would have to wait and was already quite a ways from home on a school night. read more

Our waiter was very rude. After over an hour wait, our food were still not ready. The drink we ordered (Sierra mist) has rust in it. We called and talked to the manager, she was not really listening to our concerns. She stated that they can't keep up with the high volume of tourists. Very disappointing. This is one of the cleanest Big Boy Restaurants I've been to! I've always had friendly service and excellent hot food. Their menu is pretty diverse if you've never been they have something for everyone. If you don't have time to sit in go online to peek at their menu and place an order to pick up. They are also partnered with DoorDash. They are pretty accurate on how long it takes to make so it will be hot and fresh for you. read more
