Basically I seem to be the one person I know who isn't a fan of Burger Hut. I hate it with a passion, and that's something rare for me to say! So when I heard the Big Chico Burger was comparable (but better) I figured I'd give it a try, especially since my friend had a coupon for a free burger with the purchase of one burger and two medium drinks. Well the prices were a bit more than burger hut, but the variety was better! I ordered what I had been craving which was a burger with pepper jack and bacon. MMMMM...all I can say is the the meet was cooked perfect, the cheese was melted just right and all topping bar had all fresh veggies to choose from. But it was the bun that will bring me back again. It was like a mix of bun and french roll...super soft with the right amount of dense chewiness that I like on a burger. Dry cardboard buns are disgusting. The fries were fresh and piping hot. Parking is award and there is limited seating inside, but since the weather is nice the outside patio is open as well. I will definitely be back in the summer! read more

I am new the to the area and have lived close by this place and finally after a few months, my wife and I decided to give this place a try. While we were placing our order, one of the two grill girls were staring off into space and i couldnt help to notice her deep ear digging with her finger. Gross! A solid, classic burger joint. Burgers were juicy and cooked to perfection. The bun, bacon, cheese and fixin's were fresh and full of flavor. The onion rings and fries were tasty with the ideal amount of crispy crunch - plus the baskets were huge. The staff is friendly and very helpful in navigating menu options. I like the burgers here. The beef is good, and there are a lot of extras you can order: bleu cheese, carmelized onions, mushrooms, etc. This is one of those condiment-your-own-damn-burger places, so we're not talking high-end service here. Get over it - it's just a burger. The fries are really good here - crispy without losing the potato flavor. But what's up with the wait? Basically a burger hut with worse food and more cost. Their burgers aren't bad but the meat is low quality. Condiments seemed fine. Their fries are soggy and nasty. All of their sauce bottles had other sauces all over them. Both my wife and my soda's tasted weird. I've been here twice. Very good burgers. My burger was pretty pink but I should have asked for it well done or medium well. Nice seasonings to the burger. Guacamole has a great taste! My experience at BIG CHICO BURGER has been a GREAT one. Considering that this new burger place just opened to the public less than 2 years ago, they established a great name for themselves. They rank as one of the best burger places in town, and not based on radio commercials but by word of mouth, simply because the quality of their products and the variety of their menu is superior to many more established businesses. Burgers: the meat is excellent, and Francisco, the owner is the one running the show at the grill. He knows how to grill to perfection, a sort of artist in this field. Buns: they are not the cheap buns you get at any other burger joint. They are made of real bread, baked by a local bakery and delivered to Francisco daily. Fries: same as above. They use fresh-cut fries, or some of the best quality frozen ones. Toppings: many to choose from. Sauces: standard Mayo, Ketchup and a spicy-tasty home made one. Parking: available on the back side of the building My overall grade was originally close to 4.5 but I decided to raise it to 5 stars after I was told by the owner about the freshness of their products. Big Chico Burger used to be delicious and reliable, however over the past year the quality of food and service has declined dramatically! I hadn't been disappointed before my last visit with the meat, however my burger yesterday was dry and flavor-less. The french fry situation has been terrible for the past year or so.. The french fries used to be fried so they are crispy and didn't taste full on like grease. Now their french fries are under fried so they are soggy, and hold a very greasy taste- not good! Their fries used to be my sole purpose for going to BCB, but now I may as well go to Burger Hut! I'm not sure if the restaurant recently came under new ownership or not but I have a feeling this has something to do with the decline in quality. I've seen a ton of new faces at the restaurant recently which also could be contributing. The building itself is starting to look a little sad. The employees did not turn on the lights until it was nearly completely dark in the dining room. Several bulbs are out that highlight the menu for those with poor eye sight (like myself) and the lights are out on the soda machine. These small issues truly aren't that big a deal but they do make the business less aesthetically pleasing. Still a decent place to grab a bite to eat, however I won't be back for a while. read more

Pretty good food. Not the best burgers but definitely good, and on a good day the fris can taste amazing. On the bad days the fries aren't as fresh, kind of limpy. What I love the most is the fried jalapenos that they have, I add them to everything or even just order them alone! The condiment bar is fresh and clean and well maintained. Big Chico Burger was good. Husband & I went there because we had a two for one coupon, and we'll go back in the future. I got a garden burger, husband got a 1/3 pound burger, and we got a small basket of fries, which was huge! as mentioned by other reviewers. The burgers come with cheese, which they had a nice selection of. I also ordered the beer battered jalapenos; they came on the side, and there was enough for two burgers. The condiment bar was relatively standard, but it did come with all the necessities: red onion, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, relish, peppercinis, mustard, ketchup, etc. I was bummed that there was no spicy mustard, but it was still all good. Ambiance is nothing to speak of, just a couple of tables & benches; looks like there's a nice outdoor seating area for when weather is warm. I do have to say I like my steaks medium rare and I still asked them to cook mine more or it's a little undercooked for my taste when it comes to burgers. Stopped here after an afternoon of working in the yard. The burgers are good, the fries were ok (better after we added the seasoning salt to them), the turkey burger was good, according to the 13 year old. The milkshakes were ok. We are new to town, and the kid at the counter never said one large order of fries would feed all 4 of us. (even after he learned we were new and had never been there before) Instead, he let my 10 year old order fries with his burger, (which my husband also did) so we were drowning in fries. First time coming here and unfortunately it will be the last. Ordered 2 combos and spent about 25 bucks or so...the guacamole was pretty good but the bacon burger I received had burnt bacon on (the madness right?). We had asked for the burgers to be well-done, but one was unevenly cooked and mine turned out to be almost raw inside and burnt on the outside. The fries are a good portion but fries are fries, it's kind of hard to screw that up in my eyes. The salad bar and decor was good for being a burger joint but the workers weren't very friendly and seemed to be just ...blah. I just think for almost 25 bucks I should at least get my burger cooked right. I'm so bummed because the flavor wasn't half bad...and I'm starving still so yes I'm upset lol. read more

They recently started using local tomatoes during the summer, which was a huge upgrade to the crap they were using before. Seasoned fries are just OK. Nothing special. I live in the neighborhood of this burger joint, and when they first opened, they advertised that they got their beef from a Nor-Cal rancher who reared their beef in the Japanese Kobe style. So the quality of the beef is excellent. I've had better veggie burgers, but the quality there is also good. They offer a wheat bun option; you can choose your burger size (1/4, 1/3, 1/2 or even a full pound!). The condiment bar is fresh, and the prices are affordable they always have a good meal deal. This was my second time coming, first time I loved it. great burger & fries. we came tonight & waited almost an hour for our food. They messed up my burger and put condiments I didn't ask for. We asked them to fix it, instead they wipe off the condiment and give it to us as "new". Bit the burger and tasted exactly what I didnt Want. They just wiped off the condiments. For all they know I couldve Been allergic to that condiment. Hopefully they don't do it on a daily basis to someone who is deadly allergic!! Full review: The Big Chico Burger is a popular place located right across the street from the high school. We were fortunate that school was on vacation, otherwise I could see how this place could easily be overrun with teenagers. Parking was scarce however. A very small lot considering the lunchtime crowd we witnessed. Food was good if a bit overcooked. I would have preferred a larger more diverse condiment bar. This is a built your own hamburger bar after all so there should be more than the standard offerings to make it a stand out burger joint. My issue with the place had to do with the owner's policy regarding service animals. When we entered, the cashier asked us for our clearly identified service dog's "certification". This is a clear violation of the ADA laws regarding medical service dogs. According to FEDERAL laws a medical service animal must be granted all access and you cannot ask anything other than the two allowed questions of the handler. I suspect the owner is mistaking the rules for therapy dogs which is totally different. Therapy dogs are not granted full access to eating establishments so the owner may well be within their rights to require certification if they allow them at all. The owner's requirement to produce a 'certificate' to enter is going to fetch him a fat lawsuit from the ADA. The dining area is full accessible but as previously mentioned the seating is entirely picnic tables so that makes for a bit of difficulty with wheelchairs. read more

We have eaten here several times and been disappointed too many times. Slow service, combined with poor quality upon self pick up, I won't eat there again. The last time we got food to go, my sons burger was literally cold (like someone fully cooked it wrapped it and put it in the refrigerator), the onion rings were good, but the other two burgers were Luke warm. This is a nice little gem of a burger joint! They cooked my burger exactly as I asked for. The flavor is wonderful. Cooked on a grill, the fat drops down on the plates, smokes come back up to get that extra wonderful taste. Love the part where you can fix it up as you desire on the condiment bar. two kinds of pickles, mayo and other standard fixings and a few not so common. It's not a cozy romantic place ... but hey, life is what you make it! It's worth your time to check it out! read more

The condiment bar closed due to covid, but they had a large list of things they could add to the burger for you. The milkshake was one of the best I've had in ages. I have been eating here since I was in elementary school! (I am in my 20's now) I love the food and maybe I am bit biased but they have the best burgers in town! I love that they offer work to local high-school students as well as other people in need of a job. I really don't have anything bad to say about this place. If you have the patience to drive past the fast food restaurants and park in the back of this little hideaway, then you are truly rewarded. The staff are great, the food delicious, and the eating area clean. The burger meat is frozen and not made in house, the fries come out of a freezer bag that I'm sure arrived on a truck a week or more ago. They play grill master but in reality just heat up store bought food. You can make better burgers at home for a fraction of the cost and ditch the disgustingly sticky / dirty dining room, or go with out the flies. Worst burger I have ever had in chico. Can't believe it took me so long to try this place. This was at least my 4th or 5th visit and the food has been excellent every time. It takes some time to get your food because it's fresh! Duh, people shouldn't complain about waiting. If you don't want to wait for GOOD/FRESH food go to mc Donald's. Big portions for the price - the fries are massive even the side that comes with the combo so my advice is to share. The season fries and onion rings are fantastic. Their special sauce is YUM! This was my first time at this place. It has the same set up as Burger Hut where you order the basics plus some grilled options if desired, and then add the rest at the condiment bar. I'm a fan of spicy foods so I loved that they had a chipotle sauce! The guy that took the order was slightly rude, but I think he is just apathetic about his job. Didn't make a good first impression though. If the customer service was good it would have been 4 stars. The onion rings and fries were very good. I had a chocolate shake and would not recommend it. It was very basic and didn't taste very good. I'm sure I could have made a better one at home. I think the quality is a bit better than Burger Hut, but very comparable. I will go back! read more

Just returned home from here, and even though we only live a few minutes up the road I already feel sick. My husband and I wanted to try a new burger place, and since it's been YEARS since coming here, it was pretty much new to me because I had only been here one time previously. I remember my friend raving about this place, so we went here instead of Burger Hut. I greatly regret that decision (though I haven't been there in years either, so, it might have been as much of a let down as Big Chico, too). We both got the same thing - garden burger with grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, and Swiss cheese on a wheat bun. First thing I noticed is that the bun wasn't toasted. I thought that was pretty much a given at restaurants to toast the buns? Not only was it not toasted, it was dense and moist and grossed me out, so I took the bun off and just wrapped the rest of the burger in lettuce leaves. The grilled onions were so unappealing, soggy, floppy, and bland I scraped them all off. Gross. The Swiss cheese tasted nothing like Swiss cheese. It was freakishly white and had a weird consistency that made me nauseated. Then we ordered the seasoned fries, not knowing they're CRISSCUT fries (why don't they just call them that?!), and they were terrible as well. Had no seasoned flavor even after I added copious amounts of seasoned salt, some were green (ew!), and were just a bad end to my meal. My friends say they have never had a bad experience here, but maybe we just ordered all of the wrong items? I love my friends and trust their opinions, but I won't give this place another chance again. Pricey, too, considering everything. read more

My favorite burger in all of Chico, and that includes Nobby's! It's essentially the same set-up as Burger Hut where you add your own codiments at a condiment bar, only they have a much bigger variety (including my favorite, the bread and butter pickle!) Aslo, the quality of meat they use seems to be a lot better. The fries are standard, but you get a lot of them. Also, since you essentially build your own burger, the tend to not have that smashed, messy quality that burgers have when they're wrapped in butcher paper. I wouldn't recommend going at peak lunch hours on the weekday unless it's summer, as the place is packed with high school kids. If you go when it's busy the wait can be long, but that's the same with any non-fast food restaurant. read more

This is one of the first burger places I went to after moving up here from Sacramento, and it is now my #1 place if we are craving a burger and fries! (Can't do it very often, so when I do, it's here!) Sorry Burger Hut, once I tried BCB, I never went back. We have never had a bad burger here (the beef just has a great taste) and they always cook it exactly as requested. The fries are fabulous too, and I am picky about my fries!! Oh, and the pickles at the veggie bar......great, too! My boyfriend gets the one pounder, the quarter pounder is more than enough for me! Also, in all the years we have been going here, (over 5 for me) we have never had a rude or unfriendly employee, they have all been great. If you are a vegetarian, well, your loss! read more
