Always a cheap favorite when I'm in Athens. This is a casual place where you pay at the register and they they bring out the food for you! There is plenty of outdoor seating so it's nice on a really sunny day. They have plenty of yummy baked goods and treats, so you can stop in for a filling breakfast or you can just go for a coffee break. There's a parking lot about a 2 minute walk away behind hendershots so you can get there easily. There's also side street parking as well. I went with my parents to big city bread. I ordered roasted veggies. I'm not exactly sure what the hype is all about. I most likely could have made the same dish at home for much cheaper. The bread they came along with it was good, but I wouldn't recommend ordering the veggies. My parents ordered burgers and a side of fries and they thought it was alright, but not worth the price. There may be some other dishes (or more bakery and bread stuffs) worth trying instead. A solid 4+ stars for what seems like a popular brunch spot on the weekends. We were on tour this weekend and it ended up being in Athens, which is a pretty hip little college town without The Virus damning everything. Well, that didn't let Big City Bread from keeping its patrons well fed. We arrived at the recommendation of a local that raves about this place, so Yelp was only called into duty to help locate our coordinates in reference. It turns out we were only two blocks away, which made having great brunch that much easier (not like we wouldn't have driven more). The restaurant has full-on COVID rules in place, so leave your complaints over at the Wendy's. It seems their protocols are working for them, and if you want to eat here? Yep, their rules. It was refreshing to say the least. We happened in when there was only two other guests ahead of us, so no long waits needed. Once you are in line to order, acquaint yourself with the menus, and read everything, because the person in front of us was having a hard time. Again, take your time. The menu might appear small, but if you choose your own meal-adventure correctly, you will win the prize and your gut will be knighted at the end. The food is real. Yeah, I typed that out. The ingredients are real, the food is real, and the people serving it are real (I hope). Think "homemade" but without the Guy Fieri meaning of "homemade". No one lives in the restaurant, therefor it's not homemade. The portions look small but are deceiving. You'll be full at the end of this meal or you did something way wrong. All-in-all, a great meal, and given the world circumstances, they did a pretty damned good job at it too. Nice people, and plenty of people watching are in store. read more

One of my go to brunches in Athens! The quiche plate is my go to. Im not sure what they do to the quiche, but it is absolutely incredible. I normally get the plate with potatoes and a biscuit. They also have an amazing coffee selection and pastry selection. Very cute atmosphere and a great patio when the weather is nice. Location is convenient to our child's apartment in Athens for walking to Big City Bread Cafe, but due to the size of the cafe - indoor and outdoor seating, parking is a nightmare. Only six, maybe eight spots in their parking lot, seems like they could negotiate something with Wendy's. Wait was about 15 minutes to order. Cashier was friendly and helpful. Not a fan of tipping before I receive my food, but the fact that their first choice for a tip was 25% was off putting. Food arrived in about 15-20 minutes and we all enjoyed meals - two sausage biscuit sandwiches and one quiche meal with a biscuit, though the bitter greens as an accompaniment with the quiche was a bit strange since there was no balsamic vinegar or glaze to dress up the bitter greens. The biscuits and the quiche were certainly worthy of a 5 rating. Yet, non-food related factors are also a consideration when scoring a restaurant. Other than bringing our food to the table none of the restaurant staff paid any attention to us, making me regret the 15% tip. It wasn't until after I receive the receipt as a text that I noticed we were charged 85¢ for the jelly our child requested with his biscuit. A half tablespoon (if that) cost 85¢???? A two hundred count box of jelly packets from the restaurant store prices at 7¢ for a packet of Smucker's jelly. The jelly he received was uninspired and questionable in flavor, could have been raspberry or strawberry, but was certainly not worth the price, especially since there was only enough to cover one half of the biscuit. I get why people recommend Big City Bread Cafe, but the lack of a service and nickel-dime antics ensures we just go to our default at Waffle House and make quiche and biscuits at home. read more

We ordered catering through Big City for a party of 90. We got large platters of hummus and bread, cheese, veggies and dip, and desserts. It was all pretty generic, nothing special. When we showed up to pick up the order, we were very confused. We stood in a long brunch line for about ten minutes and made very little progress. Finally, we stopped a server and asked for help getting our stuff together. They schlepped it all out to our car and gave us plenty of utensils and napkins. Like I said, it was all fine. YUM. The breakfast here was amazing and was exactly what we were looking for. It is a quaint, casual restaurant with a huge outdoor area. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. Everything is super fresh. We sat on the outdoor patio as it was the perfect day outside. In terms of food, I got the birds nest which is a piece of sourdough bread, cheese, fresh herbs and a fried egg. It was the perfect combination! I wish I could eat this every day. I also got a side of bacon and a side of grits. The grits were to die for and literally melted in your mouth. They really don't do grits in ny the way they do in the south. My fiancé got a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit and he also thoroughly enjoyed it. As others have mentioned, the coffee is also a must. It's locally sourced and delicious. Oh, Athens. Y U so far from me? I was visiting from Minnesota with my other half who used to live in Athens and he insisted we go to Big City Bread for breakfast. I obliged. I am so glad I obliged. This place is everything I wanted it to be and didn't know it was. Quaint but not cramped, Friendly counter service, Delicious self-serve local coffee, Perfectly sized menu (not overwhelmingly big, not too small), Inviting outdoor patio, and the best of all: the smell of warm freshly baked bread. Can I move in? I can sleep under one of the patio tables. We sat down at one of the said patio tables, set our number down, and took in the scenery as we waited for our food. I noticed some lights strung over the patio and it immediately made me want to return to sit out here in the evening to dine in the soft light of the strung lights. YES PLEASE. I ordered the Bird's Nest which is a fried egg delicately cooked inside of a slice homemade sourdough toast with fresh herbs and gruyere cheese. At home we call this a Toad in the Hole; don't ask why, I don't know. Bird's Nest makes MUCH more sense. I digress. How can something so simple be so incredibly amazing. This was perfect. The flavors were somehow bold and delicate at the same time. The fresh sourdough toast perfectly complemented the flavors of the herbs and gruyere. It was served with a side of cantaloupe that also tasted really good with the flavors (fruit and cheese as most always good). In addition I added a side of bacon because, bacon. It was perfectly crisp (some people might not like it that crisp but that's exactly how I like it) and delicious. Again, can I move in? My other half indulged in the French Toast which was his staple selection when he lived here and boy was it amazing. It's a generous portion of homemade french bread dipped in cinnamon-vanilla custard and pan fried just before you slather it in the warm maple syrup. He was lucky I was so enveloped in my Bird's Nest or I would have stolen it when he wasn't looking. What's breakfast without coffee though? As mentioned, they have delicious self-serve locally roasted coffee available and you would be doing yourself a disservice if you skipped it. It was so good that not only did we have almost three servings but I was ready to get in the car and drive to Jittery Joe's Roastery to buy a bag of it to bring home. I regret not doing that. and I regret not buying some fresh baked bread to go. Looks like I am just going to hop a flight back to Athens soon. I'll be back; though not soon enough! While searching for possible coffee shop haunts in Athens we happened upon Big City. This place is really pleasant with a spacious patio and calm interior dining area. A plus on vegan confectionery too! I haven't had any hang ups on the staff as others seem to have had. Every time they've been very friendly albeit quiet. A demeanor that seems subtle and welcoming. Now I'm rather curious on the consistency of quality though. I'm not sure if that is related to how busy this place was, but my first time here the food looked really top notch and tasted top notch. I think the surprising factor was the garnishing. Anyways, upon return that garnishing isn't there, nor did I expect it, but it made me curious. Either way the food tasted fresh and of quality. :) I really enjoy their iced lattes and the hummus sandwich + fries. They have daily sides which obviously change daily. Haha. So far they've been really refreshing and light, though I can imagine people saying it'd be a tad bland or tasteless. I love this place. I'm not in Athens as often as I'd prefer, but when I have some time to kill before a Georgia River Network meeting, BCBC is a fantastic place to stop, get something tasty and nutritious to eat, and grab a little wifi before board meeting time. The food here is outstanding. Hand crafted sandwiches, soups, pastries, burgers, desserts, and a host of other things. Fresh ingredients is the name of the game. Add to that some personalized service and now you know what keeps me coming back. This place is simple and elegant. Quiet and composed. If what you want is a latte and a cookie, you got it. If you'd rather have the quiche of the day with the soup of the day, you won't be disappointed. Seating inside is always pleasant. As I said, it's relatively quiet. And there are large windows which make for plenty of natural light and simple views. Outside, there's a large patio area with plenty of seating to enjoy when the weather is nice. BCBC serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The sign says there's a Sunday brunch, and I kinda want to try that out. Oh, and as the name suggests, they're an actual bakery. You can go home with fresh baked loaves of bread, baguettes, and flatbread. Food is made to order, so some things are quick, and other things take time. But it's worth the wait. Everything I've had has been presented well, and thoroughly satisfied my hunger. Today I had the andouille, crawfish, & cheddar quiche, and a bowl of the gumbo. (Don't judge me. I know what I like.) The quiche was delicious. Home made. And the gumbo totally knocked it out of the park. Dark and flavorful. I'll certainly stop off next time I'm passing through Athens on my way to a GRN meeting. I am visiting the area for work and a co-worker strongly suggested I try this place. Parking is extremely tight, but what is not in a city. The atmosphere is very cute and welcoming. The exterior looks nice for a warmer day, it was 28 degrees this morning. The staff is friendly when I made contact with them, but they also do not seek out contact. I am ok with this but some people may not be. I ordered a sandwich (Ham and Cheese) and they offer it in a cold and warm variety. I chose warm and asked for a sweet tea. The price with tip was over $13. I thought it might come with chips or fries, it did not. I selected a seat and waited for my food. It was delivered not exactly timely but also it was not delayed. I know this sounds vague but it is that. The food could have been quicker, but it wasn't. The single sandwich was large. (I still could have used some chips)... it was good. The bread was the best part of it, but overall it was good. Bottom line summary, cute place, little pricy for what you get, but I would return. I've haven't really had much trouble with parking here. Since it's on the outskirts of Athens DT Seating - there is indoor and outdoor seating. So on a pretty sunny day, go sit outside!! Seating inside can be limited. So, if you're in a group, send 1 person to find a table. Service - When you walk into Big City, you'll order at the counter. The line can look long, but it moves fairly quickly. When you're done ordering, they'll give you a table #. What I've tried recently food-wise.... I'm pretty sure I've tried almost all things here the past few years. Continental Breakfast - choose 3 items for 7.50! (has several items on the list) I get Fresh Fruit, Raspberry Yogurt & Toasted Bread - All given in generous portions. I get so full. Highly recommend this if you want a bite of everything! ... I personally can't eat eggs (which sucks sighs), so I try to steer away from anything with eggs. Therefore, I often choose this whenever I come here. OMG their bakery items look delicious. I was really looking forward to going to Big City Bread Cafe, but it turned to be a bit of a letdown. First thing to start off on is that the parking lot can only fit about 10 cars maximum. This was fine because customers would usually park at the old Wendy's parking lot and walk across the street to get to the cafe. Unfortunately, there a sign on the door that said starting on 11/4/15, violators who parked at Wendy's would be towed. So I suppose one would have to avoid this place during peak times or just count on luck to find a parking spot. The interior of the cafe is cozy and warm like most bakeries. However, that's about the one of the few positive things I can say about this place. The menu wasn't very impressive, almost boring. You have your regular breakfast items, but nothing really stood out to me. I went ahead and ordered the omelet with baby spinach mushrooms and Gruyere cheese. They do have the option for those who want their omelettes made with eggs whites or the whole egg. My friend who came along with me ordered a 'Make Your Own' breakfast sandwich. The service was way too slow, especially since it wasn't a peak time. Those who have already sat before we ordered hadn't even gotten their food until after half an hour. Unfortunately, it only went downhill from there. The presentation of the food was just bland. White plate to go with my white egg white omelette. I never knew what to expect from my omelette because some bites very extremely salty and then others was just tasteless. However, I felt lucky compared to what my friend had ordered. She had an egg, bacon, sausage, and cheese sandwich that was so thin, that it seemed as if she was only eating two slices of toast. Truly, a waste of $5.00 for a sandwich that you could whip up in your own kitchen in less than 10 minutes. I was really disappointed in this place. I love coming here for breakfast. I love bringing a book, sitting on the patio under the trees, relaxing and enjoying a good meal. Being gluten free I don't get to enjoy most of the bakery items, but they do always have one or two gf dessert. Chocolate truffle flourless stars are my favorite. You'll just have to experience them. My staple breakfast here is scrambled eggs, which they make very peppery (which I love!), their fried potatoes, seasoned well with a touch of coconut in the mixture, and soysausage. Sunday does not provide table service so you order at the counter and the food is delivered to your table by an assigned number. Tried this place because I was staying close by. The food was good, but not great. That's even with the fact that I waited in line for 30 minutes just to order (so I was hungry!). it's a pretty inefficient and slow system. Be forewarned that the menu changes over at specific times, even if you are waiting in line. I had the mixed vegetable, arugula and feta omelette with gluten free toast. It was nice to have a gf option, though obviously this place is not suitable for celiacs. The mixed veggies were large, chunky mushrooms, carrots and cauliflower. Odd. There was very little feta in the omelette. The gf bread is served too thick. It's nice that it's fresh baked, but like many gf breads, it's dry. Not even butter and jam kept it from being dry after I sliced it into a thinner slice. The raspberry jam was delicious, as was the rishi earl grey tea. Very friendly staff. read more

In fact, although its within walking distance of downtown Athens, you really have to know where it is in order to find it. In this case however, such a thing does not detract from success.
