You know, I always figured it was hard to screw up a meatloaf. At least that is what I used to think. Evidently it is not that hard to fail at meatloaf. I say that because, the meatloaf I had tonight at Big City was OFF THE HOOK!!!!! This was easily the best meatloaf I have ever had the pleasure consuming. So much flavor, but yet, still manageable. The sauce was a little bit of heaven. Wonderful. I paired this lovely with the hummus and veggie plate which was great too. Their French bread must be popular because they were all out when I tried to get one. Perhaps next time. Staff is friendly and helpful in choosing your food. After ordering, you pick up a numbered pole much like a BBQ restaurant and choose your own seats. While the seats inside looked cozy and welcoming, it was too nice of a day to pass up eating outside. A minute after seating ourselves, the food started to come out. Extremely fast and quite unexpected. (However, we did notice that people who ordered after us got their foods pretty late. About 15 minutes I'd say) The biscuits were quite large and had a good crust. It wasn't as soft as I like my biscuits to be but they weren't dry and butterless. I've had better elsewhere but my friends seemed to enjoy them. And to see them happily enjoying their breakfast on a Saturday morning is all I can ask for. I have to say, I wasn't really impressed with the omelet when it was presented. A meager, half of a strawberry placed next to a seemingly well cooked omelet. Oh well, what I really care about is the taste anyways and my friends - it was cooked extremely well. The omelet wasn't dried out and a semi-circle of coagulated sponge but quite light and delicate like a French omelet. The inside, a mixture of tomatoes, basil, garlic, bacon and provolone that was seasoned well and combined in proper proportion. For those wondering, the garlic wasn't overpowering and it complimented the rest of the ingredients with its slight undertone. Overall, I'm pretty happy with Big City Bread. I like its calm, neighborhood and streetside like vibe where families and friends can enjoy their meals outside. Birds happily eat the crumbs beside you, dogs await in anticipation to get fed and toddlers are running about without a care in the world. I'm hoping to get my hands on a French bread next time and try their french toast with mixed berry syrup. A great, getaway from busy campus life and a new favorite for weekend breakfast. Really great place. We love coming here when we can. The odd mostly lunch only hours make that tough sometimes, but we go out of our way to make it work. By far the best things on the menu are the tomato basil sandwich on their ciabatta and the fries. They put this balsamic vinaigrette, unlike any other I've had, all over the sandwich and it just makes it amazing. I'm in Athens for work and came to big city bread on a tip from some locals. I am so happy I came. For starters, any restaurant with robust outdoor seating and dog-friendly areas is going to be a target for my lunch needs. I got to watch a toddler from a local daycare feed dog treats to a Pomeranian. So, obviously the setting is amazing. The food is good too. I got their turkey sandwich on wheat bread with hand cut fries. The sandwich is pretty standard. Super fresh. They put mango chutney on it which gives a really good sweetness to it. The fries are perfectly cooked: crips outside with perfectly soft interior. Good salt and pepper seasoning. Other offerings include a full espresso bar, beer and wine, and a relaxed indoor seating area. I would consider coming back to kill time on my computer. I will definitely be back for another lunch. read more

Cute little place in Athens that has many options. The location is on the back of downtown in one of the little neighborhoods. There is not much parking, but often times you can find street parking. The food has always been good every time i have been. You wait in line and order and then your food is brought to your table. The sandwiches are good, the soups, desserts. I came and ordered the gravlax with the bagel. The price for the gravlax with the toast was about seven dollars, but to get the bagel was another five dollars. That brought the total plate up to about 12 dollars. Not unreasonable for bagels and smoked fish in Athens, but I was a little annoyed the the price of the bagel. I got more annoyed when they brought out the dish (one of those "make your own sandwich" plates) and my five dollar bagel looked like a small, sad, and over toasted bagel. Then I had to ask for a second dish of the "cream cheese" because they really only brought enough for a single side of the bagel. I was also very disappointed at the amount of fish on the plate. It was about a single layer of fish from a small package -- not enough to fully cover two sides of the small bagel. For 12 dollars and bagel premium, I expect enough fish, gravlax or otherwise. As a positive note, it was real gravlax and tasted quite good. Sadly, while the fish was good, the cream cheese was not. I tasted it, my friends tasted it, a woman behind the counter tasted it, and we all agreed it was off -- tasting like it had gone off. To their credit, they brought me a fresh plate with Philadelphia cream cheese and it all tasted fine in the end. Overall, the customer service was fine and they handled it adequately. That being said though, paying a "bagel premium", that bagel being small and sad, only receiving about half the amount of fish needed to cover a small bagel, and finally, the off cheese, makes me plan on not returning here. I hope others have a better experience here, but I doubt I will be returning. read more

It has since been streamlined into a boring, unoriginal and uninspired hamburger-substitute that has amazingly also increased in price. Supposedly this was enacted to make space for a new salad. Stopped here for breakfast today. It wasn't busy at all. I got a biscuit with egg, cheese and tempeh bacon. It was very filling and very tasty. My son got a half order of French toast and fresh fruit. It was plenty. My husband also enjoyed his egg and cheese biscuit. The coffee was good (1000 faces). We LOVE big city bread. A menu option that we frequent is the veggie and tofu sauté. So many delicious veggies in a light red tomato and pepper sauce. They serve it during breakfast and lunch and if you go during breakfast be sure to swap the bread for a biscuit! Also if you're not a tofu fan you can try it with an egg or extra veggies instead. It's delicious and healthy. We love walking here with our dog and sitting outside, sipping our 1000 Faces coffee and catching the sun through the trees. I had the Bird's Nest (see photo) which was phenomenal. Absolutely perfect breakfast item. My date had the two egg plate, scrambled with grits and the biscuit. Everything was delicious but his biscuit with the raspberry jelly was amazing! I definitely recommend stopping at Big City Bread Cafe! I heard promising things about this establishment from a well trusted source. However I was extremely disappointed all around by this "restaurant." Not only did I stand in line for 45 minutes, but when it became my groups turn to order we were denied the opportunity to order breakfast because the cashier claimed to have a, "steal cold heart," and it was 12:01 and "breakfast was over." If you lack the ability to take orders from customers in a timely manner, then maybe open more than one cash register? One member of my group was reduced to tears because of the unprofessionalism with which she was treated as well as and disappointment from having to order from boring and redundant lunch menu. One of my favorite cafes in athens! For lunch I like to do the pick 2 with either the grilled cheese and tomato soup or the mozzarella and tomato sandwich with a salad. Their grilled cheese has a tomato in the middle which is a little different but it works! My favorite menu item is the mozzarella and tomato sandwich, the bread is so yummy and the balsamic ties the whole sandwich together. The breakfast is good too, the hash browns are my favorite of the breakfast foods. Great place to eat and do some work! Lots of outdoor seating so highly recommend going on a nice day! read more

This is a really good place to get brunch. As their name implies, all of their bread products are fantastic - you can even buy loaves and pastries fresh. The only reason I gave 4/5 stars is that I'm not a fan of eggs and the menu is limited in that regard. However, the options I have found have all been great. The biscuits are really fantastic, along with the jam. They rival another brunch place in town and I'm still undecided which I prefer. The biscuit sandwich is the way to go, especially with the ham. I got the special last weekend that had tomato jam and arugula, and it was truly spectacular. I also love to get the croque monsieur (which is a delicious fried ham and cheese sandwich), and the grits are a great side option. When I'm feeling like treating myself, I'll get a slice of banana bread for later - it's simply the best in town. Overall it's a great brunch place in town, especially with it's large outdoor seating area. Just make sure you don't park in the Wendy's lot. They've starting towing with a fierce passion. OK... So I always thought of this as a good breakfast spot, but always sort of dismissed it for dinner. FAIL! Turns out it was better for dinner. Though I'm not entirely sure how, someone in the kitchen figured out that it was my birthday and sent out a free birthday app (you can pick it out of the photo stream by the candle). That was cool. Really cool. What wasn't cool was that the poached salmon salad that I saw on the Internet menu, my whole reason for going, was no longer featured. Perusing the menu I noticed a "something else salmon" over grits and ordered that, but asked to sub in purple hulled peas for grits. Not only did they happily do this, but they still executed the dish wonderfully with the peas. It was so good that I ate the salmon, all the peas, and then drank the sauce. People stared...whatever. I've only been to Big City Bread twice; both times occurred before the sale or change-of-owners or whatever the issue was in fairly recent times. The patio is indeed very cute. The wait for my food both times was pretty long. The first time I went---after that long, hungry wait--- the egg sandwich I had on a roll or bread was too dry for my liking. Still, I wanna like the place. It's in a good location, cool people seem to hang out there, but I hesitate to rush back. The coffee tasted good, the food in the glass case looked tasty. The food was yummy. We were a group of 8 and started by getting the hummus as well as the cannellini bean based paste. Very tasty. I got the special filet mignon that was perfect. The wine worked really well - I forget what type it was (because I'd had some Scotch from the Jura Isle before we got there), but I remember the name being Estes. For dessert I had the eclair, but everyone else got the flour-less chocolate stars HEATED (emphasis added because otherwise they serve it cold). They raved about it. Random comments - we ate outside under the trees. The night was perfect - I could see the moon through the leaves. There were no annoying bugs and (much as it pains me as a Tech grad to say this about Athens) I was reminded of our trip to Provence when we would eat outside under the stars in similar situations.
