Great busy place! Came on a Friday around 8:30. Very crowded place! I was given a wait time about 40 mins. Decided to stick it out as my BF & I weren't too hungry. We were able to snag two seats at the bar. I had the big daddy margarita and yum it was great! My BF ordered a Bloody Mary and couldn't believe how well it tasted. He said it tasted like oysters his fave. Now about the food yummy hushpuppies app! It's a much try salty,sweet & spicy! I forgot the name of what we ordered but it came with a little bit of everything (pulled pork, ribs and brisket) we ordered extra sides. Just took out from here Did the burnt ends & grits alongside the PB & J pie. Burnt ends and grits was a little much on the spice. The grits and the burnt ends both spicy, rather overpowering and not super enjoyable. The concept is great but the BBQ sauce on the burnt ends should be sweet to tone down the heat on the grits. I ordered baked clams they didn't taste great and were very spicy. Then we had the Cesar salad and the crab cake which were awesome! For dinner we had a fried steak which was not that good and it looked like shit seriously it looked like poop, and then we had blacked rib-eye which that saved the day!! Awesome spot that has been recommended to me for years. A few weeks ago finally got to try it and was very happy. I liked the dive bar look to it and we happened to go on a Friday night where they had a live band playing southern music. The southern dishes we got were amazing. We asked for the Lucifer wings that weren't on the menu and the waitress obliged with no problems. The gumbo and burnt end in grits were also fantastic. I got the pig out which came with tons of different. While ot was good, I found the bbq food to be not as good as the creole food they do, so I will be sure to stick to that next time. Overall review is 2.5 but I rounded up to 3 because 2 seemed too low. I love New Orleans and I've missed the food from that city so much. It's hard to find good southern fare in New York so I was excited to try this place, in Long Island too of all places! Came here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and this place was EMPTY. There were two or three people at the bar, but the restaurant itself was empty, with chairs on a lot of tables in the back. DRINKS Fine, more service for me! My boyfriend and I started off with drinks, a hurricane for him and bloody mary for me. The hurricane was definitely similar to NOLA hurricanes, mayne a touch sweeter than I remember. My bloody mary was good! Presentation was lacking but it tasted good, and had a nice kick to it. FOOD Jefferson Parish Hot Wings These were tossed in a mango habanero sauce served with blue cheese. We loved these except....they were not spicy. At all. AT ALL. This was like, a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 on the heat scale. Good wings, no heat. They were served with basic blue cheese that had some chunks but nothing over the top. Fried Oyster Po'Boy So disappointing. The oysters were not fried well at all, almost like frozen fried oysters. If you're frying oysters you need a good batter and great fry to really get that CRUNCH. These were just, not fried well at all. The slaw and sauce on the sandwich was good, but also super overwhelming, which I guess is a good thing since the oysters weren't great. This was served with cajun fries, tasted like Five Guys fries (which is a good thing!) Chicken Medallions This wasn't on the menu but was a lunch special. Chicken medallions, stuffed with andouille sausage and corn bread, wrapped in bacon, served over rice with a sauce. These were good! Didn't seem really southern minus the corn bread and sausage. But my boyfriend enjoyed it. OVERALL The food was just ok. I think if this place advertised itself as a general pub rather than a NOLA restaurant, I would have less expectations and probably would have accepted their menu more. ALSO, the outside looks SO strange. The windows are tinted and are very dark, so from the outside the place looks kinda scary and unwelcoming. Strange! Lastly, the service is great. I mean I just don't know how to put into words how good the food has consistently been over the years that I have been going here. I remember eating a prime rib sandwich here and the steak was better in that sandwich than at any steak house I had ever been to. There cajan cat fish is amazing hands done amazing. This last go round I had meat loaf and I never ever order that out because it's never as good as I make it. This meat loaf was amazing. Not over cooked and not mushy. It had blue cheese in it and usually I don't go for that but in this case it was perfect and not over barring. Donald J ordered fried gator and that was great as the the turducken he ordered. Went last night for dinner with the fam, second time there. It's nice to have something so different in the area that isn't the average menu, but it's really not my hubby's and i's favorite type of food. Everything really is good though, just of course had that Cajun spice to it. We had the wings as an app and I had a shrimp quesadilla that was on special and he had a pulled pork po boy. For the little one we had the buttered pasta off the kids menu (ice cream included). Place was pretty busy for 5:00 on a Wednesday night and live music had started outside. Fun atmosphere and very kid friendly. Main reason for 5 stars is the service. The workers are all sooo nice and very patient and sweet. Very personable, as well as knowledgeable. I checked on Yelp saw good reviews and great pics, the blackened cat fish, shrimp and alligator caught my eye. I went here with 3 other buddies and what a fantastic dining experience . The 3 piece band featuring Dan Dimania played some pleasant music. The food was off the charts as always. 4 guys and we went with Wings, Ribs, Burnt ends & grits, mussels, clams casino and collard greens. We washed the food down with Double Hurricanes. The service by our waitress Amanda is what made the dining experience exceptional. She was friendly and professional. I love Long Island but getting here via LaGuardia is something I never look forward to, so after spending most of the day traveling I was ready for something a little different and something other than Italian which is pretty amazing here in New York. Being originally from Louisiana it was no surprise that Big Daddy's caught my eye while looking for a place to relax, have a cool refreshment and enjoy some kind of sustenance that resembled the type of food I grew up eating. Seconds after arriving I knew this was exactly what I had hoped it to be, the friendly staff greeted me and I decided to find a seat at the bar which was completely empty although most of the tables were occupied. The bartender brought over a menu and asked me what I wanted to drink - there was no doubt what my choice would be after seeing the great selection of Abita beers which is true to the restaurant's theme, served ice cold in a bottle with a jar which was perfect in my opinion. The menu was filled with everything you'd expect to find at a Cajun restaurant in rural Louisiana, but experience has proven that it takes more than a creative menu and décor to emulate the cultural offerings I grew up with. Being somewhat of a gumbo aficionado I decided to pass on this as well as the étouffée and dirty rice and stick to something less risky. I chose a simple BBQ beef Po-Boy and a side of red beans and rice. The Po-Boy was served on a authentic French roll layered with tender slices of lean brisket covered in a Texas style BBQ sauce topped with a vinegar slaw, the slaw by itself would have been amazing. It seem my instincts were spot on this sandwich was executed perfectly and matched up well with several Abita beers. The red beans and rice was a little less fitting for my taste even with a large dose of Louisiana style hot sauce. There's no doubt Big Daddy's attempt to capture the New Orleans experience is commendable and likely as others have stated the best on the island, but it fell a little short of my expectations which I admit may sound somewhat pretentious which is not my intention, actually there's no doubt you'll find me here again during my next visit to the area. read more

Then another girl came up to us look like she didn't want to be there brought us water and never came back. Our order were taken by another really sweet young lady who asked if we placed orders. There's something about "Big Daddy." Im not talking about a sugar daddy, I'm talking Louisiana cooking. And that something I mentioned about the place, is a draw. There was a 60th birthday party going on so the place was packed. They also had a live band playing excellent music. There was a huge wait because of the party so I just took in the music while waiting. Finally a table opened up and we were seated at a comfortable booth. The beads left on the table, made me feel like I was emerged in Louisiana's rich culture. The one negative was the long wait, but I understood they had a full house. So when the waitress did show up, she was amazing. I wanted the meatloaf, but it wasn't on the menu this particular night. It was disappointing so I went with the crab cakes and sweet potato fries. My brother got the grits. When the wings came out I knew they were special. The lead singer in the band even walked over and asked what it was. He was surprised they smelled and looked so good. He said it reminded him of Home. After trying them, I was impressed with the flavor from the sauce. It had a small kick, but I took it like a champ. Next was my crab cake, but I'm sorry to report, I wasn't in love with it. I wasn't in love with the sweet potato fries either. They were too hot and the dipping sauce tasted more like a gravy, then a maple sauce. When I believed all hope was lost, my brother let me try the grits. They were amazing! I definitely wish I had gotten them. He got them oddly enough because he saw I had some earlier in the week. Strange how things work out. So while trying to figure out where to eat, Dave Matthews Band -- Alligator Pie came on. CG said there was a spot we may be able to try some not too far from where we were. 10 minutes later, we strolled into Big Daddys! What a fun spot! Whole place is purple, yellow and green. The live jazz band was awesome. Very kid friendly too -- every other table had a tot. Didn't see any alligator on the brunch menu but no loss, there was a ton of interesting dishes to choose from. I settled on the grilled shrimp poboy and CG had the shrimp and grits. I haven't had many poboys before but this one was excellent. Roll was nice and toasty. It came with a tangy, crunchy slaw and a chipotle salsa that had a nice kick. The shrimp was also grilled perfectly and there was some in every bite. #win The cajun fries that accompanied were very sad though. So soggy. Each one I picked up bent over. Boo. CG has never had shrimp and grits and ended up loving it. I tried some and it was definitely delicious -- comparable to the plates I had in Charleston. Texture was there and it was so cheesy and good. I'd get either of these dishes the next time I come back, since there will be a repeat visit. I was sat immediately and my waitress came along cheerfully to take my order. I ordered the Gumbo to start and Shrimp & Grits as my main dish. The Gumbo tasted great with just the right amount of spice. Let's just say I regretted ordering a cup instead of a bowl. I was pissed when I reached the bottom of the cup but I managed to keep my composure. A few minutes later my Shrimp & Grits came out and MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS!! I almost busted out in a foodie's rendition of Rihanna's "Where have you been." It was that serious! My brain wasn't ready! The Grits......omg!.....the GRIIITTTSSS must have been made by the god of Grits!! They were melt in your mouth creamy and so smooooooooovvvvee!! The Grits are HANDS DOWN the BEST Grits I've had in NY. The Shrimp were the perfect size and plump and that saaaauuucccee!!!.... It was tomato and garlic perfection! I lost count of how many shrimp were in the dish. Which is rare nowadays. It was definitely a generous portion of food. Shockingly, I had to ask for a to-go box. This is a definite 5 as far as New Orleans style restaurants are concerned. I've been here countless times and never get enough. The decor leaves you feeling like you're smack in the middle of Mardi Gras. Good and drinks... Wow.. I'd highly suggest a gecko to start, it's a perfect blend of vodkas (yes, plural, with lemonade and cranberry), you've been warned though you won't taste the liquor but a few sips on you'll know it's a big boy drink! The food is always perfect, rib eye steak, wings, ribs, gumbo, Cajun catfish... All kidding aside I can't identify a meal considered to be ok... The food far exceeds expectations across the board. Similar to the geckos, use caution with the ghost pepper wings... They're arguably the hottest food on the menu and most likely the hottest food you've ever tried. I don't know if it's because I was raised on southern food or if this place really just sucks but I'm not a fan of big daddy's at all. Now, the customer service and atmosphere was nice but the food fell short. I had the oysters for the app and they didn't taste fresh at all. It was hard to swallow them because of that. For my main course I had chicken fried steak w/ mashed potatoes. This may just be a personal pet peeve but I hate it when my meat (especially if it's covered in gravy) are on top of my sides. The plate did not look appetizing at all. There was no color, it was a little depressing. The fried coating on the steak fell off every time I cut into it and when I was done searching my plate trying to decide what was what, my plate looked like there had been a food war there. The ribs my bf had were really good but everything else that came with it was gross. Beans were too sweet, corn bread infused with jalapeño peppers is not our cup of tea and we both hate coleslaw so we weren't a fan of that $80 bucks later we we're both pretty disappointed and not very full either. Big Daddy's is one of those places that I will stop everything for. Other such items include but are not limited to; Tickets to one of my teams live, a scotch tasting, flipping the channel and stumbling on Scarface or Casino or the national anthem playing. What's not to love! I've been here probably about 10 times or so since the first time I stumbled upon this place for my birthday 3 years ago . Since that time they have expanded into the next store front so that more people can enjoy the deliciousness they are dishing up. I can honestly say that everything I have ever eaten here has always been delicious. Some of the highlights that I implore you to try ( if they are on the menu, cuz it changes daily) are the following: The Big pig out, any version of the rib eye, the jambalaya, the ettoufee, the habanero cheese grits and Lucifer's muscles. My all time favorites are the Baton Rouge Broiled Oysters, the Jefferson Parish Gator and a new addition to the mix that I just had this past week. Now I had already said that I've been here quite a few times and I had never had the delight of having the crawfish boil. I was happier than Eddie money running a travel agency when I saw it on the menu. This dish has it all, Crawfish (duh) shrimp, andouille sausage, potatoes and corn on the cob, all in spicy broth. If you're in the mood to "pinch the tail and suck the head" I highly recommend this dish. In my opinion you can never go wrong with Big Daddy's. Recently visited with my boyfriend and it was busy so they offered us to sit at the bar. We thought why not it doesn't look too crowded and it will probably be much quicker. Wrong Once we sat down the male bartender looked at us didn't say anything/didn't take our order. Then the female bartender took our drink order. I ordered a watermelon mint drink- they didnt have mint. Fine. When we finished our drinks it took probably 10 minutes to get the bartenders attention, they have regulars that come into the bar and get served quicker and first. Once we ordered our food - 40 mins after arriving and getting the attention of the bartender, I said to my boyfriend "it's so loud in here hopefully she heard our order right". Then the male bartender says to the female "she just said your gonna screw up her order" out loud and looked at us. Super uncomfortable when that is not what I said and he was very rude the entire time we sat there 4 feet away from him without saying a word. The food was ok the first few things we ordered weren't available- shocker- Pasta jambalaya was very rich. Caesar salad was nothing special. The biscuits were good and the mashed potatoes really good. Overall it's overpriced and in my opinion the service was not what it should have been. I came to Big Daddy's for a bridal shower this past weekend. The restaurant was smaller than I expected, but they had blocked off a pretty nice area for us to do our thing. Overall the food was great and the waitstaff was more than accommodating. There was one server in particular who deserves some recognition. He was short, skinny, and had a buzz cut (or was bald? I can't really remember now). He also had tattoos on his legs. He was so, so helpful, and very talkative and friendly. My favorite parts were the salad (I know, right?) and the jambalaya. The salad had plenty of goat cheese and a delicious dressing, everyone ate them right up. The jambalaya was really good; it wasn't too spicy, but still had some heat to it. Best jambalaya I've ever had. It's got some heat and they're not shy about piling it on the plate. The gumbo is pretty good and the gator tail appetizer was surprisingly tasty. Get the cole slaw. You won't be disappointed. On a weekend, be ready to wait close to an hour for a table and it's loud, but what would you expect from a Mardi Gras-themed place? The wait staff is spotty. Great restaurant. Great food. Went to Big Daddy's 2 weeks ago for a pre Birthday dinner. I had the blackened catfish which was cooked to perfection and has a wonderful flavor. I also got the gumbo of the day which i would highly recommend. I returned on my birthday we ordered the blackened gator which was spicy but flavorful. I ordered the creole jambalaya which also had a nice kick to it. The gator was a bit hotter so the jambalaya was a step down hotness wise but excellent portion and flavors. We also ordered the shrimp and grits which were absolutely some of the best grits I've ever had the seasoning of the grits and the shrimp paired is an exceptional combination with a generous amount of shrimp that allows you to experience the taste as a whole experience until the final spoonful. The stuffed shrimp was amazing. If your thinking about trying it don't think just do it you won't be disappointed. The service was excellent they constantly checked up on us to make sure everything was ok. I look forward to trying Big Daddy's East in Bay Shore.
