So disappointed. Been here many times over the years and could always count on Big Daddy's to serve up spicy, delicious food. Not anymore, apparently. Went with a party of five on Saturday night and every dish we had was super bland, and worse, served lukewarm. Gumbo was almost cold but ok (and not spicy at all). Everything else was really bad. Stuffed shrimp was all breading, not even a hint of the promised Tasso ham. Bland. Seafood etouffee also super bland and the habanero goat cheese grits didn't taste like habanero or goat cheese, just plain grits. Chicken fried steak tasted old and re-fried. Cajun Jambalaya, which used to be spicy and delicious, tasted like rice with tomato sauce. Again lukewarm. I'm a long-time fan, but will stick with cooking recipes from JP's wonderful cookbooks from now on. Very sad. read more

Went for dinner on Friday night and 6/6:15pm is the perfect time to arrive as we were seated right away and the restaurant was still quite empty. The music started at 7pm and that is when it started to get very crowded so get there early and hang out for the music. The place definitely has a great vibe and atmosphere. We ordered the pasta jambalaya, the pig out, and a side of grits. I was torn between the pasta jambalaya and shrimps and grits. I ended up choosing the pasta with a side of grits and it was definitely the right choice. The pasta was delicious and a nice portion, it was quite spicy on its own and we almost asked for extra spicy(I would not recommend getting it any hotter). The pasta also was delicious leftover a few days later. The grits were a great choice as side, they were fluffy and delicious. They did not taste spicy while I was eating them but when I reheated them the next day they did. I did see someone who ordered the shrimps and grits and it looked quite soupy and I do not think you would really get to enjoy the taste of the grits with that meal. The mussels also looked extremely delicious. As for the pig out, I have ordered similar meals at other restaurants so I was expecting a very large amount of food but when it came I was underwhelmed by the amount that they gave. It was still a good amount of food but nowhere near what I was expecting but all of the items were very delicious and cooked very nicely. If I had to choose one I would definitely go with the brisket. Next time for the price I would probably just order 2 different sandwiches as opposed to the pig out. read more

Went there on FAT TUESDAY for lunch and had a blast. The place was packed. The waitresses were all dressed up with masks face paint and beads. They had an awesome blues band playing at the perfect volume( you could have a conversation without screaming across the table but could still appreciate the music at the same time). It was my first time eating creole food and I thoroughly enjoyed it. luckily my buddy had been to New Orleans before and knew exactly what to order. Started off with a Hurricane to drink - it was very strong . We had the Gumbo (nice spicy kick to it) and charred oysters to start both were delicious. We Split the Seafood Etouffee (huge portion can easily be shared) and it was even more delicious then the apps. After eating here you will want to book a trip to New Orleans ASAP. Enjoy! read more

Every Friday night my wife and I like to do date night and we couldn't get a reservation at another restaurant that we normally go to. I've been wanting to try Big Daddy's for quite some time now and we decided to pop on over and we're extremely happy that we did. As we walked in, we were greeted by some of the friendliest people at their check-in desk. They had some really good zydeco music playing by one of the local bands on Long Island, and the bar was packed. We grabbed a couple of their specialty drinks from the bar and boy were they delicious! Once we were seated, which didn't take very long, we were met by a very nice young lady by the name of Hannah who was our server. She made all of the best recommendations for appetizers and main courses, which we were blown away by. I had the Creole jambalaya and my wife had the shrimp and grits, both were extremely delicious. For dessert we ordered their key lime pie which was out of this world. This is definitely a hidden gem right here in Massapequa and we will absolutely be back! read more

Went here with a coworker on a whim expecting a shoddy dive bar and was SO surprised. The drinks were fantastic (the sangria was delicious but I highly suggest the bloody Mary's) and the sweet, citrusy butter was a really nice surprise for the bread. My friend got the fried alligator as a starter and said it was a little chewy but raved about the sauce and the slaw underneath. She was also thrilled with her dish which was blackened catfish and with a mushroom sauce over rice. I got the pulled pork waffle with fries which was delicious. I wish we would have had room for dessert. The service was also exceptional. I don't quite remember the name of the waiter but he was tall with red hair and an accent, he was wonderful. My first time here and we had a great meal. We shared some spicy mussels, which were great ! I had a scallop special and the scallops were perfectly cooked with a sauce that I could only describe as delicious. My pal had a big steak (which I unfortunately did not taste) but he was very satisfied with, he said it was the best steak he's had since Insignia Steakhouse. Well, been coming here for over 20 years, and this is the first time I have been disappointed. Before going we checked the menu and checked on that nights specials, which seemed interesting. We sat down a couple of minutes after 6 on Wednesday night. The place is maybe half full. Waitress, who was nice comes for drink order, when she comes back a couple of minutes later, and asks us if we would like to order. I ask, what are the specials tonight, she replies they only have one of the specials all the others are sold out. Really?? At 6:15, 4/5 of the dinner specials are sold out and only have one special istill available? So, more than 3 hours before you close and the majority of the specials are sold out,. I think it is fair to say, this is unacceptable. As for the food. Bread and butter as usual, except bread was 3 inches long sliced into 4 thin slices, I guess I could have asked for more, just seemed cheap, not like before. Apps: we has clams casino and cup of gumbo, both very good. Mains: Dr. John's pasta, and seafood etouffee. The etouffee was good, but the pasta wasn't like it has been in the past. Portion size was smaller, (always, got two full meals out of it, tonight finished it) meats are diced up tiny, and the sauce just seemed old, like it was reheated from earlier. I was told it is on the spicy side which I like, but there wasn't a hint of spice, had to ask for hot sauce. I understand with inflation, a lot of restaurants may be cutting back on portions, to maintain a profit margin, but not to have 80% of the nights specials at 6:15 is not good. I'll write the pasta off to a bad night. Honestly, the vib was just not the same. We will go again, and chalk this up to an off night, for what ever reason. I just hope they don't go the way of other restaurants, since the pandemic and inflation and are cutting corners. While I understand inflation is hitting them, what they have to understand is inflation is hitting EVERYONE. read more

This place is amazing! There aren't a whole lot of options for Cajun food on Long Island but Big Daddy's completely nails it. The portions here are very generous so come hungry. The menu also changes each day so there may be a different selection of menu items depending on what day you go. One thing I've noticed consistently on the menu is the Creole Jambalaya which is insanely good. This time I had the steak pinwheels diablo which I would also highly recommend if you're in a meat and potatoes type of mood. Also, live music on Fridays if you're into that. read more

We have been going to this place since it opened 25 years ago. New owners since then but it was ok for a while. Now I think they have just given up. We have eaten there 3 times in the last few months and the food is has gone from ok to poor. We had their Gumbo the other night which was A. Served cold and B.was really just a bunch of beans and sausage with no rue or liquid. I had the Country fried steak which again was cold, hardly any sausage gravey (had to ask for more) and the so called ''mashed' potatoes had chunks the size of a golf balls. I see people on here that say it's great Cajun food. Well I doubt they have been to NOLA because this stuff isn't even close. Even the music sucks, in the old days they always played Zydeco it is after all a Cajun resturant, I don't want to listen to 80's rock in a Cajun place. Simple. If you want GREAT FOOD with AMAZING FLAVOR, come eat here. My go to is always the Creole Jambalaya. For apps you cant go wrong but i suggest getting their Gumbo and trying the Gator. Great wings as well Also great for a Sunday Brunch. Bacon & a mountain of Pulled Pork in top of a Waffle with Maple Syrup. AMAZING. Especially while listening to a live band play. This place is a great little place for some great down south food! The Lucifer Mussels is a must if you visit this location; I say that being a person who doesn't eat mussels very often. We also had the pasta jambalaya and blue point oysters that were delicious. You will not be getting a quiet dinner at this Massapequa Park Cajun/ Creole restaurant. It's extremely loud and, unfortunately, very kid friendly. Started with the crab cakes, two lump well seasoned crab cakes accompanied by a tangy coleslaw that went well with it. Grilled alligator was tough as expected but served with a sweet, painfully hot pineapple habanero sauce. Ordered the shrimp etouffée, jumbo shrimp over rice with peppers, onions in a sweet, sour brown gravy. Tasty and the shrimp was well done. The blackened cat fish was burn your face off hot and served with a cream sauce to ease your pain. Well grilled and very fresh. Service for quite a crowd was fast and friendly. It's pricy, $100 dinner with tip for two but the portions you get are huge and the quality and service is very good. Worth the slight splurge. read more

This was my first visit here after being extremely disappointed going to the Bayou a few days ago. When I feel the need for spice I just have to have it. This place was just like eating in the big easy. Omg the food cooked to perfection, very flavorful and large portions unlike the other place. Staff pleasant and cares that everything is making you happy. Drinks right on. When you think Cajun-Creole, think Big Daddy's as your go to place. The purpose of me and my friends coming here was to compare Big Daddy's and the Bayou and I am sure glad I came here. I was a Bayou peep in the 1990's and have not been back till last week to find "mish-mosh" and I have never been to Big Daddy's even though my friends had always told me many years ago that this is the place to go not the Bayou. Big Daddy's blows the other place away in every aspect and way possible. Now you know where to go when you want real authentic Cajan-Creole and service with a smile! Only reason I didn't give 5 Stars was the guests next to us had foul mouths and we wanted to change tables but couldn't. This is not the restaurants fault just trailer trash sitting next to us with no kouth! UPDATE: Went back again for lunch a month ago. Place was off and I wouldn't recommend to anyone. I've been here at least 10 times and keep going back. The food is always awesome, the atmosphere is fun, and the service is great. The big pig out is good to split between two people with a few sides. It has four different meats including BBQ chicken, ribs, sausage, and brisket. The blackened catfish over rice is delicious and SPICY. Get ready to feel the burn. Speaking of which there is one drink in particular that will melt your face off. The Choking Doberman. It's a margarita with habanero infused tequila. I get it every time I go but make sure you can handle extremely hot food if you order it. The other drinks are amazing too including their Bloody Mary's and Hurricanes. Even the butter is amazing. I think it's made with roasted garlic or crack. Probably both. When they have oysters on the menu grab them because they're always fresh and delicious. The cheesy grits are the bomb. How do you like your grits? Creamy, regular, or al dente? The atmosphere is fun and noisy. On the weekends there is usually a live band. Big Daddy's always satisfies but if you can't handle the heat it's probably not for you. I was speaking with a friend from NOLA the other day and suddenly visions of jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, and blackened catfish danced before my eyes until I couldn't take it anymore and dragged my husband out to Big Daddy's to get my cajun on. OK maybe dragged is the wrong word, because it hardly takes any convincing at all to get either of us into a place that serves hurricanes, sazeracs, and spicy southern goodness. And do you realize how difficult it is to find good cajun food in the northeast? If you do, then I recommend you check out this joint. They change their menu daily, and while I always find something good to eat, the Catfish Po Boy is a staple and remains my favorite dish here. Dressed. But no need to ask for it dressed, because that's how it comes. They also have drinks specials and I highly recommend the black cherry bourbon lemonade if they've got it. Otherwise, make mine a Zombie. Their Hurricanes somehow taste a little more like jell-o than when they mix them at the actual Pat O'Briens, but if you get the deluxe 3-rum version, it tones that down a bit. (What?? I like my NOLA-style drinks to be NOLA-style, thankyouverymuch - in other words, good 'n' strong.) I have yet to try their sazerac or bloody mary. This means I'll be back. Well OK, the tasty food also means I'll be back. Oh, and did I mention the portions? HUGE. We're talking ginormous. We're talking split one app and one entree with a friend or you'll be taking home leftovers for sure. Two visits ago we heard someone joke "hey, they should change their name to Big Portions! Went tonight for dinner with my husband. We live in the area and have been going for years!!! We have had plenty of delicious meals. We usually enjoy coming here. My husband loves the wings and gumbo. We decided to get bbq. My husband got the pig out( brisket which they cut Way Too Thin and it was hard and disgusting, sausage: which he loved first thing he eat, pull pork ok and ribs: not bad). My husband won't complain, so i have to tell the server, she was apologetic and often more brisket which of course my husband did not want. Who wants more hard over worked brisket. When you first walk in you walk into people loudly seated at a bar drinking beer etc...the place is dark with black ceilings and purple walls...ugly!! We arrived around 3:30pm on a Saturday with seating for 5. The waiter was friendly and very courteous. He explained the menu, brought out some water with lemon, bread with garlic butter. He took our order and we didn't see him until a half hour later when he came back with our DOG FOOD!!! Not only was the FOOD DRY, it was kind of cold!!! So I explained to the waiter "Sir, this food is kind of cold...he gently replied that it comes out of the smoker so it's not really being cooked to the level where the good gets heated!! In the back of my head I'm thinking this guy knows nothing about BBQ. The food did have smoke flavor, was dry as my leather shoe, it seemed like everything on the plate was refrigerated and then reheated ever so slightly. I will never go back! We've been wanting to come here for a long time. We attempted it once before and the wait was forever long. Finally we got to come over this weekend (Labor Day) and didn't have to wait hardly at all! The menu changes daily. They post it online every day. We have heard from my sister and brother-in-law that they are always out of the stuffed shrimp every time they've come. And they were out of it again when we came! It must be good. I had a hurricane and it tasted like cherry cough syrup. YUCK. I've had many a hurricane in New Orleans and it was nothing like it. My husband had a spiked lemonade with bourbon which he said was good. He especially liked the black cherry flavored lemonade with bourbon which was a drink special. We started with andouille sausage and crab cakes. Both were excellent. The slaw that they came with was also phenomenal. I ordered the Mako with jalapeño cheese grits. The portion was HUGE of both the fish and grits. The fish was lightly breaded with panko. It was good but not fantastic. The grits were really good and also really rich. The dish was good but not much special about it. My husband ordered the creole jambalaya and loved it. The portion was super sized...enough for like 3 meals. The sauce was spicy and flavorful. There were sizable and plenty of chunks of meat, shrimp and crawfish. It was really, really good. I was jealous. This was definitely the star meal of the night. We had the bread pudding for dessert. Very, very yummy. It was dense, rich and sweet but I loved it. Overall I'd like to give 3.5 stars. I'm taking some of cuz my meal was not phenomenal. Also our waitress was really, really not attentive. We kept saying had she come by more, we would have gotten more drinks for sure. The water glasses were not well refilled either. However the bus boy kept trying to come and take our plates (at least 3-4 times) before we finished. It wasn't like there were people waiting and we they didn't need our table so it was just really annoying. I will come back and try something else. I have been to this restaurant once. My honey suggested it. It has a bar in the front and has a tumble-down decor. We were seated in the back in a dark area. I ordered the cajun shrimp and rice with greens. I couldn't see much on my plate and site is an essential part of flavor. The shrimp was spicy and the rice was over seasoned in my opinion. I didn't finish my plate, but I ate all I could. I prefer to have something bland with something spicy, perhaps this was too much for my taste. I can't recall the greens I ordered, but one bite was enough. I was relieved when the dinner was over, it wasn't bad, it was just too much for me. Not sure if or how many times this place has changed hands over the years, or if they just decided to hire unmotivated kitchen staff, but the food isn't close to what it once was. This menu changes daily which is good, you can figure food to be fresh which it is, but there's just nothing great about it. I understand Cajun and/or southern soul food isn't supposed to be neat and clean, but slopping sauce or over spicing food doesn't make it good. The blackened alligator is good. Drinks are AWESOME! Hurricane Deluxe baby! Food just isn't what it once was.
