Awesome little donut shop! The building used to be an old gas station. An old gas pump is still out front. You can't miss the bright yellow exterior right off of Highway 101 in Florence. We walked in about 20 minutes before closing and were immediately greeted by the owner. He was very friendly and helpful. My husband was admiring the huge mixer in the lobby, and the owner brought up a picture on his phone of his wife standing by their even bigger mixer in the back. Super cool. We ended up ordering 4 donuts... chocolate frosted buttermilk bar, maple frosted buttermilk bar, regular old fashioned and chocolate frosted old fashioned. Since we showed up so close to closing, he threw in a couple extra donuts on the house! So nice! All the donuts were super fresh and delicious. We will definitely be back! Went around lunchtime and it was super busy. I got a breakfast burrito, my girlfriend got a Rueben, and we both got potato salad and a donut. The food was ready quick and tasted excellent and the customer service was great. Will be going back next time I'm in the area. read more

Not-so-hidden gem on Highway 101 [Florence OR] Needed to fuel up with sugar to start our 2nd full day on the Oregon coast and we stopped at this unassuming donut shop along Highway 101 in Florence. Don't be fooled by its small exterior with a bright yellow entry way and was once an old gas station with an old antique pump even. The donut case was semi full when we arrived around 9:00a with a good variety. Hot chocolate and a cinnamon swirl for me... coffee and chocolate glazed for the hubby. Warm, fresh pillowy soft dough that's so good! The sugar and cinnamon were evenly spread on my donut (more cinnamon, actually). Friendly service. I should've bought more donuts. My husband and I recently tried Big Dog Donuts & Deli. The restaurant is very welcoming and friendly. Customer service is excellent. The food is exceptionally good. The donuts are delicious. They also have a menu that offers multiple hot breakfast items, such as the 3 egg scramble (ours included bacon and cheese mixed in. So good!); and biscuits & gravy, among other items. There are multiple sandwiches on the menu which are also delicious. There is a small indoor dining area, or they are happy to make the order to go. So today was my first visit to Big Dog donut and deli and I'm really glad I finally went. I had a sausage breakfast burrito. I didn't ask what was inside, I wanted to be surprised and boy was I. It was basically biscuits and gravy inside of a breakfast burrito with eggs and cheese AND hash brown! What a crazy good combination!! I also got a Maple bar because well, it's a Maple bar! Those have always been my favorite. I have no complaints. I can't wait to try their new lunch menu! -Also worth noting the staff was really friendly and there's a cozy seating area that I didn't see until I pulled away. read more

They make donut cakes--Just call ahead! We didn't know that, so we made our own. The worker told us when my husband picked up the mix and what they were for. All of them were tasty. And I think we tried almost all of them. The buttermilk, old fashion and fritters are always my favorite. And DUDE, the fritter! Heat that baby up and give it a whirl! You'll be glad you did. EXT. HIGHWAY 101 - MIDDAY We are about to pass through Florence on a road trip and wanted sandwiches, but the only place in town was a Subway and that sounded awful. My parents and I were also craving donuts, and Big Dog's came up on Yelp with great reviews, so we had to go! And the reviews are WARRANTED. The amount of meat you get on a sandwich makes it absolutely worth the price (around $6 a sandwich). INT. BIG DOG - MIDDAY I love that it's repurposed from a gas station, the tables are sparse (two inside, a bench outside) but we were able to grab a table before a whole rush of people came in, picking up donuts, being replaced by others eating donuts. Some of the other reviews say their donuts are the best they've ever had but god when we ate the buttermilk donut I FELL IN LOVE. It's delicious, we bought two more immediately, and the moist donut paired with coffee we had gotten was perfection. If you're ever going through Florence this is absolutely worth the stop!!!!!!! I got a brisket breakfast burrito and it was fantastic! The breakfast burrito was huge and full of eggs, brisket, potatoes, and gravy. Everything was cooked well and flavor and texture were both on point. They didn't have doughnuts when I got there mid-morning on a random Saturday in October, which was a bummer because I wanted to try the doughnuts too. I guess I'll just have to come back for both a burrito and doughnuts! Fair warning, the service is very minimal here. Big Dog was a great find. We needed a place that was open early early to get coffee and food for the start of a 1500 mile two day road trip home. We hit the jackpot here!! We don't care about the fancy made just for me with a double shot of half caff espresso and just a pump and 1/4 of whatever artificial gluten free chemical flavor so the self serve coffee was perfect. We ordered an Apple fritter and a couple of ready to go breakfast burritos. In and out in less than 5 minutes. The fritter was sublime! Crunchy where it should be crunchy and soft and tender on the inside. Not greasy. Lots of apples. Awesome. The burritos were grilled/toasted on the outside and absolutely stuffed with eggs and potatoes and bacon/ham/sausage/brisket depending on what you ordered. We had one bacon and one brisket. The eggs were cooked perfectly- soft and fluffy and tender and they had just right proportions of meat to eggs to potato. GOTTA stop if you're in the area!! read more

I was looking at the 1 and 2 star reviews of Big Dog Donuts and they are several years old, so you should just ignore them. Big Dog is the place for high quality donuts in Florence! In addition, Big Dog makes some very tasty breakfast wraps (sausage, eggs, bacon, etc.). I haven't tried their sandwiches yet but I hear they are pretty good. Big Dog also has the BEST biscuits and gravy in town. The "small" order is plenty. If you get a big order of biscuits and gravy, it's enough for two people. Service is great and the people are friendly. They usually run out of donuts by mid-morning, especially during the summer tourist season. You have to get there early to get your donut fix. read more

One of the things I love when I travel is to find small restaurants, usually a sole proprietorship. Big dog donuts is one of those types of places right here in my backyard. There's sausage breakfast burrito and their brisket egg sandwich are their own creation and delicious. The variety of donuts are always fresh in the community knows it because they scoop them up daily. One of my favorite creations is his Apple fritter! They have just the right amount of Apple mixed in with the dough. Starting my day with one of those in a cup of Joe makes you feel good. Ok, my experience at Big Dog took me about a day to fully process and get this review together. I've been coming to Florence, OR every few months for the past few years to visit family. This location has had a couple of different businesses in there during my time. The past couple of trips I've seen the signs for deli and donuts and have wanted to check it out. Well, this trip was my chance. My wife and I were going to meet her grandfather for lunch and bring out some sandwiches, and we also wanted to drop one off to her brother at work. That meant that we needed 4 sandwiches. We also both ordered a donut while we waited for the sandwiches to be ready. First of all, the old fashioned donuts are awesome! They didn't have any chocolate old fashioneds (my favorite) but they did have old fashioneds with chocolate frosting so that's what I got. These donughts are cakey on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside, just like you'd want them to be. The sandwiches took longer than I'd expected to be prepared, but in all fairness they had about 10 sandwiches ahead of us to be made. There is not a huge selection, but they do have something for everyone, including grilled cheese, BLT, and a philly cheese steak. I ordered the rueben and my wife ordered 3 clubs for herself, her grandpa and her brother. Everyone loved the sandwiches. The rueben was grilled on the outside, had plenty of meat on the inside, and they even seem to have grilled the sauerkraut which gave an excellent flavor. The rye bread was grilled not toasted which is always a plus. The club sandwiches were stacked to the sky with turkey, ham, and all the accouterments you'd expect. I guess I should not longer be surprised at the availability of decent sour dough bread outside of California, but somehow I always am. Here's where there was a little surprise: When we went to take the sandwiches out of the bag I found a paper bag inside. I though "surely this must just be mustard packets and the like." Wrong. Inside were 4 oldfashioned doughnuts, 2 chocolate frosted and 2 maple. They just threw them in there for free! This is on top of the macaroni salad and bag of chips that come with each sandwich (and of course pickle spear). I would say that for the money we got a pretty good meal. The reason I had to take a day to process this is because this is the second time on this trip that I've had someone stuffing me with free doughnuts. I'll be writing my review of the Sugar Shack very soon and you'll find out what I mean. I'm not complaining, it's just that in all of my years I've never had this happen once, let alone twice in the same trip. Anyway, I recommend this joint if you're looking for a doughnut in Florence, they may be the only place in town to get one. The doughnuts are also really good! And the sandwiches a great if you're looking for a quick lunch you can take out to the jetty or the beach or whathaveyou. Check them out. read more
