Dough Dippers were very different, very good and you get a lot for the price. Mozzarella Sticks were sold as "The Best in Huntsville". Very very good mozzarella sticks, not sure who could compete off the top of my head. Sizable compared to most places. The pizzas were very alright. The White Pie didn't have much flavor with the ricotta (common theme in Huntsville). The pepperoni was pretty run of the mill. It was nice to find a place who doesn't do the charred cupped pepperoni like everyone else is doing these days. The dough is almost like a thin and crispy, but not quite there. We were returning from delivering food to my former manager and drove down Pratt. We saw Big Ed's pizza and decided to stop. Both of us think it's been at least 12 years since we ate at Big Ed's and they were located on the Memorial Parkway access road. The original location on Oakwood was there in the late 60's. We walked inside and it felt like walking into an oven about 10 degrees cooler than the outside feels like temp of 104. It was hot. There were 3 people at the bar and 7 sitting at 3 different tables. I ordered a large supreme pizza to go. We arrived home with the supreme and it was mostly warm. With all the people moving here, it takes much longer to get to many places these days quickly. Congestion is the norm. The crust was flavorful and chewy. The red sauce was good. As for toppings, they were good. I thought the pizza was light on toppings. I am used to Donatos pizza. They put a lot of toppings on more often than not. Between the two of us discussing the pros and cons, I determined 4/5. I could not taste pepperoni because it was thin. I could taste the sausage. I will return again since Dave has proclaimed Big Ed's his favorite. read more

We finally tried Big Ed's Pizza and ordered a cheese pizza, garlic cheese bread, lemon pepper wings, and beignets. The cheese pizza was fine--not bad, but nothing that really stood out. The garlic cheese bread was okay as well. It had much more garlic than cheese and was a little cold by the time we got it, but I did like how nicely toasted it was. The lemon pepper wings were probably my favorite item. They were flavorful, though I personally would have loved a little more lemon pepper seasoning. The beignets were decent and made for a nice sweet finish. Overall, everything was perfectly edible, but nothing really wowed me. It wasn't a bad meal by any means--it just landed in the middle. The highlight of the visit was definitely the staff. Everyone was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and I liked the old-school neighborhood pizza shop vibe. While I don't know that I'd go out of my way for the food, I wouldn't mind stopping by again if I was in the area. read more

I took my daughters to Big Ed's pizza on Saturday. I've driven by and always seen the interestingly shaped building but never visited. This place is popular with the locals -- I called to order pickup one tike and was quoted 35+ minutes until pizza could be ready so I passed, but this time it was not as busy. I was prompt seated and had my drink order taken quickly. They had several college football games playing and a large selection of pizzas and beers. You're going to pay $20 for a 16" cheese pizza (additional.toppings $2.25) but that's about on par with other local pizzeria. Their beer prices are pretty cheap if you get a 60 pitcher ($14 for michelobe ultra) and you can buy a souvenir pint glass for $3, which I feel was a great deal. The room has a large amount of natural light and seemed bright and open, and outdoor seating was available. Our pizza came out quickly and had very nice cheese pull, the crust was perfectly done and thin and toppings came to the very edge of the crust: perfect. Taste was pretty good. The staff was very polite and friendly and brought my kids coloring pages and crayons and were on the ball for drink refills. Big Ed's has been around a while, y'all! "Big Ed" Neusel opened the original Big Ed's Pizza in 1961. I believe the location in the late 70s, early 80s was on Oakwood Avenue. It was a high school date location for many of us. We enjoyed the pizza, and when we turned 18 (which was the legal age at the time) a cold beer or a pitcher for a group. We visited a few times when the location was just south of the University Drive/Parkway intersection on the west side of the Parkway. It just felt a little "seedier" because we were confronted by un-homed people trying to take our winter coats. I haven't been to the latest location in the "Jetson's themed" restaurant (my words, not theirs) on Pratt; however, one of my coworkers has her date night there every Friday and just raves about it. This pizza place was busy! We sat at the bar and it took a while to get served initially. After a bit, the service warmed up and it was better. The food was quite good. We started with some mozzarella sticks. They tasted fresh and the tomato based dipping sauce was flavorful. There was 5 sticks in the order. The pizza comes out super hot! I got a little impatient and took a bit quicker than I should have. It was fantastic! The crust is solid here. Slightly chewy and not too thick. The toppings were a little sparse but overall a good pizza. If I lived here, this would likely be my spot. The 12 inch was really filling and almost warranted a to go box. So pizza is, essentially, a ball of dough that is flattened out, covered with sauce and cheese, and baked in an oven. It's how all the elements are curated, assembled, prepared, and crafted that make fair pizza different from great pizza. Without diving into the nuances of pizza purity, my assessment of this place isn't based on comparing it to the pizza I've had in Italy, or Chicago, or New York. Pizza has to stand on its own but depending on the style there are certain critical elements that make it great or not-so-much. I throw this somewhat into the NY category so here goes my criteria. Is the crust crispy but not burnt, is the dough chewy but not rubbery and does it have flavour. Is the sauce naturally sweet with an herby flair, or did they commit the the sin of sugaring it up. And then the cheese! That slightly crisp brown bubbliness separates good cheese from meh cheese and you really don't want to be that guy! Ed makes good Pizza (or maybe it was Steve or Mario or Edwina). I didn't see who made it, but I think the owner cares enough to buy good stuff, make good sauce, and proof their dough properly! More importantly, the staff is extremely kind and efficient and the food is outstanding. We got a pepperoni pizza, Hawaiian pizza, and an order of the dough dippers. I also really like their crust - not too thin and not to flaky. If I had to compare, the crusts very similar to what you'd find at mellow mushroom. But FINALLY I caught them at the perfect time and they were extremely nice and it wasn't a long wait for my food either. I liked this place. We were there on a chilly evening but outside seating wasn't too cold, and everything about the experience was solid. Food took some time to get, but they were also packed. We started with the garlic cheesy bread and it was indeed garlicky and cheesy. It was a huge starter for us, but it was delicious. Our deluxe pizza was delicious, huge to split between two (we had leftovers), and greasy in a good way--not the "oh crap, I feel like my fingers are covered in motor oil" way. They're not reinventing the wheel here, but for what it is--reasonably priced pizza that isn't from a chain--it's a good bet. Big Ed's Pizza is a staple Pizza place around Huntsville. The new location offers much more parking and room for the crowd which is perfect. Big Ed's was able to move over their oven so the authenticity is still there. The service at Big Ed's is kinda like going into a restaurant where everyone knows everybody, everybody calls you friend. The servers are extremely Kinney and helpful and just down to earth and polite. Now the pizza is the bomb. A happy interpretation of a New York style pizza, the crust is thin but not crackers, it has a bite and a chew to it. The toppings are fresh and delicious. We love getting the meat pizza, adding ricotta because honestly ricotta makes everything better. The white pizza is really good as well. The cheese bread is on French bread, and get extra of their marinara because it's amazing. We have ordered to Go multiple times and will continue to go to Big Ed's, definitely onE of our favorite pizza places in Huntsville and the history behind Big Ed's is awesome to read and learn about! Big Ed's Pizza is a long time staple of Huntsville. It's arguably some of the best pizza in the city. They relocated not all that long ago to a larger building on Pratt. The new location has plenty of seating both inside and outside on the patio. The natural light coming in from all the windows is amazing and provides such an elevated ambiance compared to the old location. I highly recommend their pizza, especially their specialty called the Big 8. It's our go to pizza every time we visit. It makes for great leftovers, so you might as well just get the largest size a 16" (12 slices). It's definitely a good idea to call your order in ahead of time even if you're dining in. Typically it takes about 30-45 minutes to make the pizzas which is not unusual around here. Good things take time, right? They serve several local beers on tap so you can always have a cold one while you wait for your pizza to be made. Went here yesterday for a date and really enjoyed myself. The gentleman I was with had been to their previous location and said that their pizza was delicious! And it was just that. We were warmly greeted as we entered their circular and open space sporting a small bar and several 1950s like diner tables that lined the windows. We sat down and checked out the menus, which were simple, but full of some great items like their mozarella sticks, cheese sticks, custom salads, and mix of meat and veggie filled pizzas. Dalias was our waitress and she gave us tons of time to check out the menu. To start we ordered their awesome mozarella sticks. You could tell they were homemade as the crust had tons of oregano flavor and the cheese was super fresh and delicious! The marinara sauce was also fresh and hot, it just made the mozarella sticks just melt in our mouths! Since my date is a carnivore and I am a flexatarian we were able to get half of the pizza with their meat Lovers and the other with their white with a sprinkle of spinach on both sides. Omg! This pizza was so worth the 20 minute wait--it was absolutely delicious! All the ingredients just came together so well with the oregano covered medium thick crust. Our waitress was just so sweet and kind too! And one of the managers came out with extra mozarella sticks for us. It was just overall a great time. Wow!
