I've been here a few times now and as delicious as the food is, the prices are crazy, especially for that portions and compared to other poké places. I'm a huge fan of poké, especially a spicy tuna bowl. The options here are more limited and more expensive than other places around the state. The service is ok, but not very friendly. The space is clean and I appreciate the number of unique drink offerings, but I won't be frequenting here very often. read more

I feel that Big Fin Poke doesn't get enough love. I hope the business is thriving, because it's probably my favorite fast-casual takeout spot in greater Portland. Big Fin was my first, and only, experience with Poke bowls. It's such a genius idea. Take the best of sushi and Japanese sides and combine it all in one fabulous bowl. I can get raw fish, rice, salad, avocado, seaweed salad, that delicious fake crab in California rolls and many other toppings for the price of one specialty roll at any sushi restaurant. It's a screaming bargain, and the perfect healthier dinner. With all of the customizations, being able to order online for pickup is key. As are the three sizes. I usually find the snack size perfect for dinner, but if I'm absolutely starving, the regular is huge. I don't know what kind of monster orders the large. Both Rock Row and the South Portland locations have friendly and efficient staff, along with easy parking. I can't imagine dealing with the train wreck of Portland area Chipotles, or burger and sandwich shops, when Big Fin Poke exists. I am just going to say it once: if you like poke, this is the best. If you are in the Portland area, they have at least two locations. If you don't know poke, but you like sushi, you must try this. Each plate is designed for the flavors to meld and complement each other. All the ingredients are super fresh and delicious. The staff is the friendliest. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was to find out that this location is moving to Rock Row in Westbrook because of the convenience to where I work in the brook but let me tell you, I think that this is a very good place for a fast food alternative out there. The food is always fresh, clean and tastes phenomenal and is something that you want to try if you have not yet in some of the other locations around the area as well. The service is always prompt and super friendly. The take out orders are extremely timely and the food is the star of the show. Almost think of a healthier option to the Chipotle style a la carte that you experience there. you can so the exact same thing here with a fusion of Asian/Hawaiian and American. I definitely recommend to try this place out ... the only thing to take into consideration is that you may have to being some extra cash as it is a little more expensive but it is worth the price. read more

If you are traveling back to NYC from Maine and craving for some Poke, you should give this place a try. According to Yelp, they have 2 branches in Maine. I visited the one in Westbrook because it is closer to the highway. The restaurant is inside a plaza so there are plenty of parking spaces. Once entered the restaurant, the right side is to place new orders and the left is for pick-up. There are signs with instructions for how to order the food which are pretty simple and clear. Build your own bowl large size is $16.50 (as of 3/7/2023). They have tables and chairs for people to sit down as well. Inside the restaurant is decorated in Hawaiian style and is kinda cute imo. The bathroom is clean and equipped with necessary items, they even provide a small corner for baby changing. As for the food, they gave okay portions but I think the amount of rice was a bit too little. I got salmon, tuna and yellowtail and they all were fresh. I wish they have given more sauce because after mixing with the rice & everything I couldn't quite taste the sauce anymore. Overall I would say it's a bit pricey compared to the amount given. But if I pass through the town again I'll probably go there and this time I'll make sure I ask for more rice and sauce if they don't charge extra lol. This place is a GEM!! I had the tuna poke with brown rice. It was spicy, sweet with pineapple, fresh seaweed and cucumbers gave it a crunch. Avocado gave it a creaminess. The first time I ever had poke was the first time I came to Big Fin and boy did they make me a fan of the food and their spot for life! I did the "build you own" option and got a ton of fresh seafood. I found my new addiction. Boom. I love you Big Fin Poke. Lots of different proteins to choose from. I got salmon and yellow tail- fresh and great texture. Yuzu citrus sauce was delicious as were the mix-ins. Too simplify what "poke" is, I'd call it a deconstructed customized sushi roll in a bowl. But they also have pokerittos which is essentially a monster sushi roll/burrito. I'd give a 4.5 cause I found the rice a bit (and I mean this is splitting hairs here) too sticky. But besides that the portion is great. Only 1 size drinks which is exceptionally big. I like the set up and comfy feel. Already aching for more. read more

I got a poke burrito with "cooked" shrimp. When I got it home to eat, I opened it and the shrimp was very gray and did not look cooked. 4 other people agreed with me and said don't eat it. I called the location, they were adamant that it was cooked, and just not kind, but said that they would refund me (only after about 5 minutes) since I said I would not risk getting sick from eating it. I never saw a refund. I emailed the owner, they said they'd refund me. Never saw a refund. Their prices are high and for something that had to immediately go into the trash due to food safety, I was very disappointed two people said I'd be refunded and they just didn't do it hoping I wouldn't notice. read more

Oh man! If only I could give more than 5 stars... If you are a major sushi lover like myself, this place is a MUST. Seriously! I've been here at least 6 times in the past few months and I commute from Gardiner... so that's definitely saying. Something! When you walk in you are greeted with a "hello!" and a smile. The set up is basically the subway of sushi. You have your choice to make a rice bowl or a pokerrito* (I think I totally butchered the spelling) which is a SUSHI BURRITO. YES. YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY! I was in sushi heaven when I learned that was an option. The large (in size) menu is super easy to read and follow, and any of the wonderful staff members will be happy to guide you through the process of creating your heavenly sushi masterpiece. There are so many delicious things you can add to your order it's pretty exciting. If you often eat sushi you will know the average cost per roll...and for this place the price is spot on! (SIDE NOTE: Not that it matters, but I really wanted to give this place a 3.5.) Finally: an eatery opens that's unlike any other. What a welcome addition to the Cumberland County food scene! Only... I'm conflicted with how I feel about Big Fin Poke. On one hand: + I really love the food here. I love the endless combinations I can get. I love the vegan and vegetarian and gluten-free options. This is exactly the kind of food I want to eat during the hot summer months. Yes yes, yes! + I dig how clean it seems; I also like the bright, open space (though I always take my food to go). On the other hand: - The service I've had so far has been terrible. I'll second what someone else said: the enormous plastic barrier (while totally "necessary" for health reasons) between the customers and the employees is incredibly difficult to talk through/over especially if you're short. I basically have to shout my order. And then, there always seems to be confusion about which employee is responsible for topping my bowl with what. I'm often told "that's not my job" as one person puts on toppings and an entirely different person puts on my veggies. Except... Usually the person who tells me this ends up being the one to do it anyway. I genuinely don't understand what's going on here. - The exorbitant price. $16 to $20 basically gets me a bowl 3/4th's filled with sushi rice. - Sometimes, the freshness. I understand avocado is expensive. An additional $1 for a tablespoon of it though is ridiculous. And the first time I came, the employee wouldn't change out the avocado container... So I got crusty, brown avocado that was wiped from the side of the empty container. Ugh (I still ate it, because avocado is manna from heaven regardless if it's been sitting out for hours). There are tables to sit at or a bar that runs along the big windows. Need a beer? No problem. They've got that and some fun Japanese drinks.
