I love this concept. I loved the food. I loved the whole vibe of this combination of a sushi restaurant and a Chipotle, where you make your way down the line and choose your own ingredients for a bowl of heavenly goodness. If you like sushi, at all... even just a little bit... then you will LOVE this new restaurant. They have fresh fish and cooked toppings. They have a variety of sauces and other enticing ingredients that you can concoct into your own taste creation. Watching the machine that makes a sushi "burrito" was amazing. Although my friend did have a hard time eating it without a knife. It was literally like the largest sushi roll I've ever seen! The one thing that was slightly confusing was that the labels on the counter didn't match with the ingredients you were choosing from and one of the workers had NO idea what the ingredients were. That made for an interesting ordering experience. I love seeing new options in the area! It's like deconstructed sushi with a chipotle ordering system. I never had poke before so this was a new experience for me! I liked it! The only draw back is if you are a newbie it can be a little confusing to order. Hubby and I got 2 smalls (1 with avocado which is $1 extra) a fountain drink and a purity lemonade and it was about $26. He place is clean, friendly and nice and the food is fresh! So good! I was on Main St last week and stumbled across this new fast-casual. Immediately walked in and knew I had to order something - the pokérrito stood out and it didn't disappoint! The fish and vegetable ingredients they use are all fresh and top quality. I'm not a poké expert but the concept is similar to Chipotle (bowls, wraps, etc.) but with fish. I've been back twice since my first trip, both times with my wife and she loves it just as much as I do. The spicy aioli sauce is super tasty! I'm a fan of the pokérrito, as it's basically a sushi burrito (what?!?!?) but the bowls are great too. Definitely stoked to have this spot so close to us in Westbrook! You gotta try it! read more

Really excited to welcome this new business to Westbrook! I'd never had Poke before, but am a fan of "Crazy Ex Girlfriend" so I had heard of it. Big Fin Poke offers a build-your-own model like Chipotle. They also have some "curated" options if you can't decide what to get. I decided to try the "Classic Hawaiian" as I figured that would be a good start. My husband got the wasabi salmon. Both were really good! A few tips now that I've tried it once: 1. Try to balance salty and sweet elements in your bowl. Mine felt like it was all salt and I wanted to have more of a balance. I would add ginger or pineapple next time to avoid this. 2. Avoid the wasabi salmon unless you really like spicy, this was intense! 3. Maybe just get the regular rice bowl, the large was maybe too much food and it's about $4 more. (Regular bowl is $10.95) 4. Shiitake mushrooms and avocado cost extra, I'd go for it next time though. Overall really good start and the space is lovely. read more

I really really really wanted to love this place. When I found out (today) through ROTD that we had a poke place in Maine, I nearly cried. Maybe it's because I just came back from Hawaii and had the most divine poke, but I was a bit disappointed by this place. First of all, the positives: - clean, bright environment - friendly staff - "fast" food and it's healthy! - originality for area - like the option of salad instead of rice What could be better: - we got two larges. For $14, I would have expected larger portions (especially the sides). Like I said, I just came back from hawaii. I got fresher, better, and less expensive poke there. Boggles my mind. I can't even imagine how tiny the regular is. - more creative protein options. Really, your only options are tuna and salmon and yellowtail, otherwise you are stuck with shrimp or tofu (and possibly chicken!?) Overall, I am really psyched this is even an option here. I love raw fish. I love rice and seaweed and edamame. Big Fin Poke on Main street in Westbrook offers all of these things and more! They also have a very accommodating staff and you can get quite a lot of food for $10. Why did I not love it???? It has nothing to do with the concept or the product. I think it's me. I've gone for poke a few times and every time I feel overwhelmed by the ordering system. I am not sure what toppings to get, I am not clear on sauces...and then the next thing you know, I am eating a poke bowl that feels like too much. I am not loving my choice and am sure I selected the wrong combination. When I really pare it down in my mind, I realize I just really want the fish, the seaweed and some of the rice, and while I could certainly order just that, it would feel counterintuitive to the whole poke bowl movement sweeping the nation. Want fresh food? Come here! This place is the real deal. My family has been here multiple times and each time gets better than before. As others have said, it is much like Chipotle just with a different type of food. You can get as many or as few toppings as you would like on your bowl. When you watch them make the bowl, you think you're not going to end up with that much food, but it is definitely filling. They give solid portions of protein and scoop all of the toppings as you request them. Some toppings can be purchased for an additional charge. We have grown to prefer the bowls over the pokiritto. You get a bigger bang for your buck that way too. The family favorite is Hawaiian Original with plenty of toppings. We recently tried the spicy aioli on shrimp, it was LEGIT! Food || I made my own salmon bowl with white rice, yuzu citrus, seaweed, cilantro, seaweed salad, pineapple, shredded ginger and kimchi with some crispy garlic on the side. The salmon was very fresh and they gave a very good amount (2 scoops) with the regular sized bowl. The sauce was delicious and you could add as many mix-ins as you wanted for the same price. Price || A regular bowl was $10.95 + tax and a large bowl was $12.95 + tax. The regular bowl came with two scoops of rice and two scoops of protein. Not entirely sure how much came with the large bowl but the bowl looked significantly larger. I've had poke at other places, and they are more expensive, with much less food. It's nice that they have combinations that you can choose from on the back as well as a make-your-own option. I took the combination they put on the back and added/changed ingredients. Service || The lady who made my bowl was very nice and informative. She explained to me my choices and what some of the ingredients were. She was super helpful and very nice. Location/space || Huge space. Great for a meal with friends and families. They have high-chairs in the front for the little ones. The place has many bar style seats around the window as well as tables all around. The men's and women's bathroom is very clean and has a brand new changing table in each bathroom. Major highlight for families with little ones. The restaurant also composts and recycles. They also have great music selection playing over the speakers. read more

Full disclosure I'd never eaten Poke till tonight, so I cannot compare it with any other. That being said I enjoyed it. As others had mentioned it's a choose your own adventure meal similar to chipotle or Azul Tequila in Gorham. The ingredients are fresh and there's a thousand different combinations. My only gripe would be as a vegetarian it would be lovely to have more then one protein option. Watch out for that creamy wasabi sauce, delicious but no joke on the heat! read more

I have to give it to Maine for expanding its palette! This is the first Poke place in southern Maine and they wouldn't have asked for a better location. It is not hard to find although parking may be challenging. When you are craving for poke and you realize they opened one in Maine, you drag your foodie partner and make the 20mins drive to get it! I have tried a hand full of poke places in New York and I hate to compare but Big Fin holds its own. It is a very clean and color place. The best part about this, is the wall menu which has all the ingredients listed and also some favorites. You have the option of a regular size which allows you to choose up to two proteins or a large which also allows up to three proteins. I had the beef and tuna with brown rice and all the toppings except for avocado and shitake mushrooms (they are $1 extra for each). The beef tasted like Korean bulgogi but less sweet. For my tuna it was mixed with spicy aoli and Sriracha ponuzu (tasted like soy sauce and Sriracha). Over all it was good. Fresh and the staff was great! I had a lot of questions and they answered each respectfully. Worth the $12 for the bowl. read more

Really glad I found this place for lunch just 2 miles from where I'm temporarily working. It's so different than other options in the area, and so good. You get to choose 2 proteins, and they have 4 fishes to select from, so I have... *math* 6 combinations right there even without going to their cooked options. With all the different possible toppings and, as far as I know, they don't charge you for going over the recommended number, you can get a great deal on your food here, not to mention some great food. I had fun constructing a plate that fit my mood. They leave each addition separate and you can direct them where you want each topping, so in essence it's as customizable as you can possibly make it without scooping it all yourself. It's not quite a Hawaiian poke bowl, but it actually works out to something even better - a filling sushi meal on the cheap. I'll be coming back here quite a few times. read more

I was in Westbrook on Wednesday and asked a coworker about a good place to go for lunch. She suggested the Big Fin and that it was great. Being a huge fan of sushi I decided to try it. They give you the option of either white or brown rice and a nice array of fish to choose from. I had the yellow fin tuna and salmon bowl. For toppings I chose some fiber, Korean spicey gochu , and crispy garlic and it was fantastic! They were chucks of fish that were topped on the rice with the extras.it was a little on the pricey side at $15.99 a bowl. However I was savoring each bite and chatting with with the people next to me who are regular customers. I would have given it 5 stars but the staff weren't very friendly and and the cashier seemed annoyed to complete my transaction. We're big fans of the spicy tuna "ready made" option, so get that if you're unsure of where to start. If that's not your style, just choose from the other ready-mades. Often I'll have a regular with brown rice, chicken, shrimp, and the spicy Korean sauce. After that the experience becomes like jazz, man ;-) Improvise! This place runs similar to a chipotle, you go up to the counter and assemble your meal. They have choices of 2 to 3 scoops of fish over rice, or you can order your fish as a roll with sea weed and rice wrapped around it almost like a sushi. They have a couple of choices of fish, beef, or tofu. We tried the spicy tuna 3 scoops, with Avocado and sea weed salad, they do charge extra for the avocado and sea weed. The portion was generous and for sixteen dollars that is right in the ball park of other poke places, I have been to. I can't believe the sushi roll I ordered here for lunch. It was hugh and tasted amazing. This new place in Westbrook is very unique. I guess they have restaurants like this around the country, however this is the first time I had ever heard of such a place. When you arrive you are given a choice of a salad bowl or a wrap. My friends who were eating lunch with me, ordered the salad, but I got the wrap. You decide on two or three proteins as there is a difference in price. I decided to go for two, tuna and salmon and it was plenty. As you move down the line you have many choices to make. I got pretty much everything on mine including seaweed salad, kimchi and avocado. All the variety of salads my friends ordered were fantastic. The roll I got was way better than their salads. I will be visiting this place frequently. read more

I had to check this place out. You see, I've been on a quest for the past year with one simple objective... find me a sushi spot in Maine. And to be frank, I'm not having much luck. It's setup like a Chipotle or subway where you have to make ALL the decisions. I almost turned to the lady behind me and asked if I could pay her to order for me. I'm not a chef, so I don't want to assemble my flavor profile. So I asked the girl behind the counter who asked way too many questions for her favorite and went with it. Can't you feel my stress days after the event? Ugh... I ended up with the spicy tuna bowl. I added more spice in the way of red pepper flakes. Have heard great things from this place so I was dying to try it! I was raised in California and have had DELICIOUS sushi so I had pretty high expectations when I came in. I didn't really know what to get because of the variety of things to choose from. I ended up getting a spicy salmon and tuna poke-rito with corn, fried onions, cilantro, fried garlic, green onions, sweet onions, crispy wontons, and sesame seeds. I honestly didn't think all of it was gonna fit inside the roll but it all came out in a reasonable size. It looked exactly like chipotle but with sushi! As soon as I started eating, I noticed that the salmon didn't really taste fresh... I didn't know if was just that day or if something was up. I recommended this place to my brother to try (since he also loves sushi) and he decided to get the exact same thing as I did but with no tuna and he said that his salmon didn't taste that fresh either... What an excellent surprise to have poke pop up in Maine. I first tried this food when on vacation in Seattle and I was sad to think I would have to drive to Boston to eat it when I came home. But then Westbrook delivers a big surprise with Big Fin! I get a brown rice base and no proteins. I can get the marinated shiitake mushrooms (normally an extra $1) complimentary. The toppings are fresh and clean tasting. My partner loves the yellowfin tuna. I wish there were a few more sauces, but that's a minor thing. The spicy Korean gochu is delicious.
