So we went back to Big Fish Market again. We got our usual catfish and filet of sole order. We like to do takeout and put our own homemade sides. Our phone order was ready when promised and I was out shortly after entering. When you order the sole you can choose from medium or crisp for finish. We got medium. And most pieces are big. Everything is tasty. They have a few tables and a TV, if you want to dine in. It's not crowded and the noise level isn't a problem. Big Fish Market was not as fresh or lively as I hoped. I was the only customer during lunch and even then, the employees seemed surprised to see anyone walk in. I placed my order and was given an estimate of fifteen minutes. If possible, it would be better to call ahead. The seafood came out fresh and steaming, while my mac salad had clearly been portioned in advance. *Fried Oysters: these were on the smaller side and had a rather neutral taste. The breading was light and seemed to lean toward a cornmeal mixture. There was not much flavor overall, so the oysters depended heavily on the sauce. The spicy tartar sauce had a nice zing, though I wished lemons had been included. *Mac Salad: not my favorite version. The macaroni was quite bland and noticeably firm. It lacked the creaminess I expected and the seasoning relied almost entirely on the relish, which made the dish very sweet and sour. I was not able to finish the container. Okay was skeptical I al I usually go to Louisiana but their portions been slipping so I tried this place and actually pretty dang good and priced right for the portion amount. Everything wa shot and fresh. I will say I wish they cater was made in house you can tell it's not the highest quality but other than that, I would definitely eat here again. In comparison to Louisiana, like I said, the portion size is way better, the hush puppies are definitely a similar taste. I had ordered the buffalo fish and sides, I haven't eaten this fish in a while. We placed the order and they didn't put the order on a tray to dine in just bagged it up like we leaving. Upon looking at the fish there were only I solid piece and the rest of it was cut up like a bone? So I broke it in half and the fish had grey color on the end and the middle was a little white meat. So, I tried the macaroni salad and it was oily and no type of vegetables cut up or seasoning. The meal wasn't appealing so I asked for a different kind of fish instead the clerk advised the owner and he claims "No one never has complained about his fish" very rude. Instead of making it right being a first time customer he just gave me the money? And if he could he would have asked me to leave. I had grilled salmon plate that comes with 2 sides. I chose green salad and deep fried zucchini. The fish was overcooked, but seasoned well and tasty. I had to hit this place twice in order to give it an accurate rating. Neither time was perfect, however neither time was terrible overall. The first time we went we ordered two combo plate A's one with Red Snapper and one with Catfish. Both fish where cooked perfectly, still moist but crispy. The fillets are a little on the small side but they usually give a few extra pieces to compensate for that. The fish was also very much under seasoned. They accommodate the fish with a side of hot sauce and house made tartar sauce. The hot sauce is definetly vinegar based, but goes well with the fish and shrimp. Their tartar sauce was very unique, but also delicious. It was more mayonnaise based and sweet, no relish no pepper. It is similar to the sauce you might find on walnut shrimp in a Chinese restaurant. Now on to our sides. Macaroni salad was simple but better than most. It seems like that tartar sauce mix was used to make it, but I'm not complaining. Their potatoes salad was also out of the ordinary. They were similar to how you would expect your mash potatoes to look however they too were made with this sweet tartar sauce mix. Again no so much of a complaint that an interesting observation. We had their hush puppies which were hands down their best side and also their fresh fries which weren't bad. The onion rings were much to be desired. No real flavor but at least where freshly made. On the first outing I'd say fish was a 3, Mac salad was a 4, potatoes salad 4, fries maybe a 3, onion rings 1, just puppies 4. But now to take two. So we had to double up on them, this time we order oysters as well as two combo plate A's. The oysters were actually pretty large. However the accoutrements where not up to par. They gave us lime and tapatio hot sauce. No cocktail sauce no horse radish. Also they should have served it on ice especially since we ordered it to go, which I might not recommend, but we were fiending for some oysters. They also were sitting in a little bit of brine which was slimy looking. Overall a 3 for that experience, but I am willing to try again. I love oysters and they have them at a steal. Second time around we got mostly the same sides, besides this time we had collard greens. They weren't bad, however it was such a small amount it was more of a taste test than a side dish. This time the fish was cooked perfectly again and seasoned to perfection. However it one hundred percent was not the fish we ordered which was to be red snapper. Overall I would give this place maybe a 3.5 or a 4 depending on when you go. I would still rate them better than a lot of seafood places we have tried farther out for the LA region. read more
