I'm a big sandwich fan, I mean, who isn't? I had been looking forward to going to BFD for a long time, with the 5 star reviews and all. I have had some killer sandwiches in the past in other cities (Deli Board, Roli Roti, Paseo) and was hoping to find a spot in SD that was at least somewhat on par. I split the Hoisin-ginger pulled pork and the roast beef. I was hesitant on the roast beef, but I thought the addition of broccoli rabe would bring something unique. Wrong. There was so little broccoli rabe I couldn't even taste it, the meat had no flavor (not even s&p), and it was not as tender as I'd hoped. The pulled pork sandwich was smothered in a sticky sweet sauce. I expected more complexity, but the sauce just tasted like commercial stir-fry sauce. It needed more ginger, spice and salt to combat the sweetness. In my opinion, a sandwich is only as good as the bread it is housed in. A great sandwich shop, will usually make its own. I love the BFD. Sandwiches are good and made with quality ingredients. They prepare everything in house except for the bread. I've had the roast beef, turkey, Cali Cubano sandwiches. All were tasty and make me want to go back the following day for more. Great options for sides like potato, macaroni and chicken salads. Black bean salad and the quinoa is on my list to try next. Cookies and other sweets are tasty, chocolate pistachio cookie is my favorite. I hate to say it but I think the prices are a little steep and the sandwiches are on the smaller side. But I write it off as paying for the quality not the quantity. I'm a fan! read more

I saw this when I was on my way into Sprouts, and I decided I needed a sandwich to go with my fresh fruits purchase :) I got the meatloaf sandwich. It was pretty good, the meatloaf had a smokiness to it and you could tell the ketchup was homemade. The bread was soft and fresh (they told me it isn't made in house, but is from a local bakery). Loved the potato salad, good balance of onion and boiled eggs to potato ratio. Lots of mayo. It's a bit pricey, I spent about $12 for just a decent sized sandwich and the potato salad, I could go again if I had the $$ and someone wanted to try it. read more

I am a sucker for sandwiches. Currently on the hunt for the best sandwich shop in San Diego. I heard this place was new and was appealed by their name--Big Front Door. Didn't really know what it meant until I got there and indeed saw a BIG FRONT DOOR. It was gianormous and extremely wide. Made of glass so sun was allowed to light up the store. It was a little too bright when I was there (5:30pm) because the sun was setting and it blinded me for a minute. Maybe they should consider getting some blinds for this time of the hour. I ordered the Loins of Fire only because it had the coolest name. It was said to be spicy, but that was nonsense. While we waited for our food, me and my friends walked over to their drink selection and they had an enormous variety of drinks. So many different kinds of root beer and soda pop. I thought that was cool. Maybe I'll try one next time if I ever decide to come back. Finally the sandwiches came and we enjoyed them on the outdoor tables. Sandwich was very tasty. There was a generous portion of meat and I honestly have no idea what else was inside. I think I recall some tomatoes. Only thing that I would have liked more was the size of their bread. They were super tiny compared to all the goodies inbetween. It looks evenly portioned the way it's wrapped, but when you take it out and look on the other side, it's like, Where did the bread go? And I don't know about you but I like to eat my sandwiches and burgers in a way that there's an even proportion of the contents inside and the bread outside, and so I'm not stuck with just empty bread in the end, or a pile of meat. Quite pricey for a sandwich. Mine totalled to around $11. Don't know if it's worth it, but it's definitely different than your typical deli sandwich shop, so worth a try! And they should add more hot sandwiches to their menu! In fact, they should add more in general! I like my sandwich shops with vast variety! read more

Good ol' BFD. It's the rich man's Subway, except they pack a lot more into your sandwiches. I usually go here during lunch time around 2pm when it's not so crowded. It's awesome that parking is such a breeze because it's right in front of the store! I like their open concept store since there is no closed door so the store is always open. My two favorite sandwiches are the Cubano (house cured & smoked pork loin, jack, pickle, red onion, avo, mustard & jalepeño aioli- $10) and Sonoran Chicken (chicken, poblano, jack, corn salsa, avocado, lettuce, chipotle aioli, ciabatta- $9.50). True story: The first time I tried them out, it was so good i came back after work for another sandwich for dinner. The cubano is great in the sense that it is STUFFED with PORK, cheese, avocadoes, and their special aioli sauce. Be prepared with napkins because it WILL get messy. A lot of bites will cause the sandwich to disorganize itself or launch an avocado from itself. It does get annoying sometimes since when you're almost done with the sub, your fingers are messy, but it's O SO GOOD. The sonoroan Chicken is decent in itself because its packed with chicken, jack cheese, avos, and corn salsa. My gf has said the corn salsa is a bit spicy so be prepared with some milk. The chicken has always been tender for me and cut into smaller pieces. Overall, it's a great place to grab a bite to each with your coworkers for lunch. It's a bit pricey for $10 a sub, but more so than likely you'll bring the other half home for dinner. They have a big table inside and a few chairs outside. They're very pet friendly since I've seen plenty of dog walkers stop by for a treat. Odd name for a store, but great grub. read more

Went in on a Saturday afternoon to get sandwiches after a hike. Staffs were friendly and the interior looked great. We got hoisin gingered pull pork, turkey day and macaroni salad as the side. Both sandwiches had great flavor and were very filling but overly salty. My bf couldn't finish the whole turkey day sandwich because the salt just killed his appetite. read more

Big Front Door has a nice airy layout and lots of natural light. The people who work there have always been kind to me and my family when we come in. Expect to wait 5-10 minutes depending on how busy it is. The sandwiches are worth the wait though! The Sonora Chicken Sandwich is one of my favorite sandwiches! If you haven't tried it, you definitely should. read more

The Deep V is the best vegan sandwich in the city and possibly the best sandwich hands down. The smoked potatoes come with a warning that they are not bacon, but you might be fooled. They are a revelation. Sub them for meat in most any specialty sandwich - they'll make suggestions, so follow the owner's advice. Simply put, this is THE place for sandwiches in San Diego. read more

Good food. And great staff. Very friendly. They closed at 8pm and I called a to go order around 750pm. They were still able to accommodate. Got the duck cranberry salad. It was good but I was hoping for great! Duck was a little dry and my salad had too many walnuts. However I'm hopeful to try it again in the future. I've been here before and they have great sandwiches and sides. Macaroni salad is to die for! read more

Big sandwiches. Yeah that's exactly how I'll start this review. Been here a couples times already, and I have a good impression of this place. Nice people, delicious food, reasonable prices, and I've never had trouble finding street parking near here. If the sun is still out after work, and I feel like getting something to eat that isn't overly extravagant, this place is a good choice. And the bags in which the food is stored.....definitely leaves me with a great feeling, and I get super excited to eat it when I get home. After the first time, I said I'd come back. I did come back, and I say I'll come back yet again. Just a note: It's not a late night spot. So if you're craving it after the sun goes down, chances are you're out of luck for the day. I'm sure on any other day during the week, if you go for lunch, the place is decent. When we went there, they literally ran out of every single effing sandwich. My partner got the last roast beef sandwich. They had run out of salmon, pork, chicken, beef, and ham. Basically the only thing you can get there at 6pm on a Thursday night is salad. Let me explain how we ended up there. We had initially planned to have ramen that night. We solidified this plan the night before. But while we were eating lunch, my partner's brother suddenly decided that he had eaten a lot of bread and wanted a salad for dinner. He said we could still go to a ramen place if we wanted to but he wouldn't order anything. Of course, the sister insisted that was not acceptable, so he found this place on Yelp. That's where the situation flipped. He got his food, but I didn't get any. I just got the churro muffin, which was really sweet and really dry. I think it had been sitting out there all day. The only good thing was the guy refunded our money because when I had initially ordered, he didn't know that they had run out of everything. read more

I really wanted to push the BFD, but they had it open the whole time. The guy behind the counter said it's fun to open it lol. He was extremely nice and friendly. I shared the loins of fire and sugar b sandwich with my friend. They were both really yummy. I liked the brioche bun for the sugar b sammy and the french bread for the other sammy- it reminded me of the viet sandwiches but with a lot more meat....There is just one long community table to sit at and some outdoor seating that was available. We also tried a couple desserts- one cookie and one really sweet chocolate thing. read more

This place is just tooooo gooooood. Have been here twice now and ordered to-go. They had my order ready faster than expected both times and the sandwiches were as hot as I expected them to be. First time, ordered the Thanksgiving sandwich. Mashed potatoes were HEAVENLY. The turkey was...turkey. Nothing crazy to say about it but it was still good and still moist. I only ate half the sandwich because this beezy is a monster. Sufficed to say, didn't finish the macaroni salad I ordered with it either. IMO (in my opinion), the sides are left to be desired but I loved the sandwich itself. Also when I am not on a budget and drinking 7-11 Big Gulps for a dollar, I want to try their huge assortment of soft drinks they have at the actual restaurant. Second time, ordered the PB&J. It's a grown-up PB&J essentially haha The brioche type bun is a little too sticky IMO and I would have preferred it to be a bit toasted to contrast against all the PB&J they put in. The strawberry compote was good, not excellent but it was good. Ate only half the sandwich again..no sides... I love that this place has such unique sandwiches and that they have a new revolving sandwich depending on what's going on. There are two sandwiches that aren't on the online menu! :O Make sure you ask them about it! They have a special and they have a California version of the Cuban Sandwich (last time I was there at least). In any case, it's always good to ask. They give you lots of info on what you're getting and they're super nice :) read more

Oh, my. That's quite the sandwich/salad list you have there. Between my husband and I there's got to be 7 of our favorites from sandwich shops near and far, all in one place. That said, if you're in the mood to eat, casually, in a semi-outdoor spot that house-smokes all their meats and fishes, you might want to check this out. Other reviews get more detailed. ***3.5 stars*** I've been to both Ike's in SF and Paseo in Seattle so it's always hard to impress me with a sandwich but I like to take into consideration that each deli shop is different. While I appreciate local delis that make their subs with fresh ingredients to create unique subs such as BFD, it was really hard for me to like this place even when I wanted to love it. First of all, the bf and I waited for 20 minutes to get our subs. It was busy inside but there was no line to order. Each sub is made fresh after ordering so this may account for the long wait. No problem with that but 20 mins is still quite too long. Other people who sat across from us started to get impatient. Many customers made their orders over the phone so I would recommend this too. This place only has 1 long "picnic" table and a few tables outside so finding a place to sit may be difficult during lunch for big parties. + FOOD Cali Cubano - the pickles and mustard give this sub a tart and tangy taste which I really like. It adds flavor to the pork lion which was tender but bland. The description of the sub sounds a lot better than how it actually tasted. I liked it at first but wasn't amazed with it. Sonoran Chicken - the description also sounds better than how the sub tastes. Your average chicken sandwich with avocado. The sonoran pepper was roasted perfectly to add sweetness to the sub but nothing special also. 2 sandwiches including tax came out to $22. The ingredients were fresh but I still think the place is overpriced for subs. I'm glad I tried BFD but it isn't a place that would make me come back for their subs. I would probably come back to try the salad or side dishes next time. read more

I love Big Front Door. I love sandwiches on a nice, fresh torpedo and they do no disappoint! The Keeper was excellent especially is you're a fan of BBQ sauce but my favorite is The Club. Classic deli sandwich with turkey (lots of turkey!) and crispy bacon. Substitutions are easy here. Cali Cubano is also a must try for those who like a kick to their sandwich. Friendly service and great food. read more

Per popularity: Loins of Fire is my choice. Usually, I am not into buying $10 sandwiches, but I'll splurge a little bit for BFD. Head here on a nice sunny san diego day and you won't regret it. Sit outside and enjoy the beauty that is SD. They actually have a chill little beer collection which is nice too. The menu is pretty crafty, of course I went with the loins of fire though. Lots of good flavors coming out of that sandwich, the pork, the peppers, the sweet sauce, all complimenting one another. It looks like a pretty small sandwich at first but it is quite stout.. anyways next time I'm lookin to try that rib sandwich, and some pasta too. and the door is really big. read more

Impossible to eat. I got a ham and cheese (forgot the name) on a torpedo roll and while the flavors were solid, it was disgusting to eat. The roll was 1/3 the size of the filling and it was way too much filling. This place needs to tone it down. read more

You can vote on a Dog of The Month which is the cutest thing EVER. The photos mention the dog's name and star sign :D The latte itself was delicious. It was a good balance of sweetness and coffee. I also got a birria breakfast burrito, which came with some salsa on the side. The salsa and burrito were yummy, but kind of skinny and tiny for their price. Overall, the vibes and drinks were great and I'll for sure be coming back to fill out my stamp card.

Now, this is where I have mixed feelings because the service before we even arrived was absolutely brilliant. We were celebrating my friend's birthday, and I had a cake delivered through Instacart ahead of our reservation. The restaurant was SO on top of their communication. They even messaged me personally to let me know the cake had been delivered and was there waiting for us. When we arrived, my friend had a personalized birthday menu with their name on it, which I thought was such a thoughtful touch. Between that and the communication about the cake, I was thinking, "Oh yeah, they are ON IT. Tonight is going to be amazing." Unfortunately, that level of service did not continue throughout dinner. Our waitress was nice, but we had to remind her about things multiple times. We waited quite a while for our bread and had to remind her about it. The bread ended up being comped because of the wait, which I appreciated, but later she also completely forgot my margarita. For an upscale steakhouse, the service just wasn't as attentive as I expected it to be. Now let's talk about that bread because PLEASE, please, please get the bread. It came out warm and fluffy, and the butter complemented it perfectly. I had seen pictures of it beforehand, and it absolutely lived up to them. Honestly, it was one of my favorite things we ate. I believe it was around $9, and while I personally think bread should be complimentary at a steakhouse at this price point, I would still order it again because it was THAT good. We skipped appetizers because nothing really jumped out at us and went straight into our steaks. My friend and I split the 20 oz Bone-In Ribeye, and my other friend ordered the 14 oz New York Strip. We asked for both steaks to be sliced, but only the ribeye came sliced. I was also surprised by the size of the 20 oz ribeye. I've ordered 20 oz bone-in steaks at other steakhouses, and this one looked noticeably smaller than what I was expecting. Between the two of us, I think we each got around three slices. For a 20 oz steak that we were sharing, it just didn't feel very substantial. When it came to the sides, though, WE CLEANED UP. We ordered the Mushroom Fricassée with wild mushrooms, garlic and thyme; Dirty Hash Browns with trout roe and crème fraîche; Mac & Cheese with fontina and herbed breadcrumbs; Grilled Asparagus with sauce vert, lemon and amaranth; and the Potato Purée with butter and chives. And this is what makes the entire experience so frustrating: the food was actually delicious! The flavors were there. The sides were good. The steak tasted good. We genuinely enjoyed the taste of what we were eating. But almost everything was COLD. And I don't mean, "Oh, I wish this was a little warmer." I mean our food was cold. We spent around $350 on dinner, and somehow our meal came to the table cold. When they brought our steak out, we were specifically warned, "Be careful, the plate is hot." I remembered the warning at first, but later I went to move the plate with my bare hands and realized...the damn plate wasn't even hot. A manager came over and asked how everything was, and we told her exactly that: the food tasted delicious, but it was cold. She asked if we wanted anything reheated. Reheated?! That response really threw me off. At an upscale steakhouse, after ordering steaks and five different sides, I don't want my dinner reheated. I want it to come out hot the first time. And that really sums up my experience at Born and Raised. I think it was so disappointing because I was SO excited about going. I want to be fair and say this was NOT bad food. The bread was fantastic. The sides had great flavor. The steaks tasted good. The personalized birthday menu was adorable. Their communication before our reservation was excellent, and the way they handled my friend's cake genuinely made me feel like they cared about making the birthday special. That's why I'm so conflicted. Everything leading up to dinner screamed top-tier experience, but once we actually sat down and started eating, everything became very lackluster. Having to repeatedly remind our waitress about things, having my margarita completely forgotten, one of the steaks not being sliced as requested, and then having an expensive spread arrive cold just did not match the level of restaurant Born and Raised presents itself to be. For a roughly $350 dinner at an upscale steakhouse, I don't think expecting attentive service and hot food is asking for too much. I really, REALLY wanted to love Born and Raised. Unfortunately, for me, it just did not live up to the hype.

If I were ever on death row and I had to decide on my last meal, I would ask for the entire menu from this place so that I may die a happy man. I usually eat here at least once a week, sometimes more. This is a hole in the wall, little mom and pop deli, and you can taste that homemade deliciousness in all of the food. They have something for everyone here: sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers, and desserts (more on dessert later). I normally go for their cup of soup and half of a sandwich for six bucks. Chili is my go-to soup, which is made daily in a slow cooker. It is definitely some of, if not THE best chili I've ever had. Full of meat and yummy veggies, with just amount of kick to it. Delicious. When it comes to the sandwich, I like to get something different each time. So far I have tried the club, pastrami, ham and turkey, turkey and bacon, and the tuna melt. I have yet to be disappointed. All of the meats are fresh and thinly sliced. They have a plethora of cheeses to choose from, too. My favorite is the muenster cheese on the club sandwich. Get that toasted, and dip that thing in your chili. You can thank me later. Your stomach will also thank you if you get yourself a slice of their carrot cake for dessert, which is also made daily. Moist carrot cake with yummy cream cheese frosting, it really is superb. Don't forget to get their frequent buyer card. I am not a huge sandwich person but every now and then I get a craving for one. And sandwiches are probably the easiest thing to make but for some reason, it always taste better when someone else makes them. Whenever I am craving a sandwich, I always head to this place. Their hours are great and the location is spot on. There never seems to be a huge line and the staff is always really great. These days it is extremely hard to find excellent customer service. It is probably because every ounce of customer service is jam packed into this place. The guys who are always here want to be here and they are always happy you are there too. At least that's what it feels like. And probably the reason I always come here. I generally order the chicken salad sandwich. I have tried making it myself but they add top secret magic sprinkles. The bread is always fresh and the tomatoes are top notch. The prices are very reasonable and they even have a punch card deal. Make sure you get that card punched to earn your free reward! This place was attracting me with a huge selection of bottled craft sodas. There was a fridge stocking brews and another stocked with bottles of wine. I grabbed a blueberry soda. It tasted good from fruit. Big Front Door is the newest sandwich shop. The name 'BFD' is absolutely right. Its door opens wide to let the amount of sunshine fill in the space. I ordered a sandwich called the Loins of Fire. Chili pork loin was piled on top of a roast pepper, with pickled onions, cilantro, and lettuce between two halves of a toasted roll. I liked the moist of the pork. The spice, pepper and the rings of pickled onion were bringing a tangy sweetness for the sandwich. GR8!!! Adding $1.50 extra, I had a side that was the chipotle potato salad. Next time when I come back, I will try the desserts. They have many cookies, and chocolate cakes. We picked up a few sandwiches for lunch for the office. I absolutely loved the Avocado Highway (I added bacon, of course). The romaine was crunchy and the pickled red onions were too. Considering the word avocado was in the name, they loaded it with avo, as they should have. The parmesan crisp added the appropriate amount of saltiness. We also had potato salad that included peppers for a nice change. The sundried tomato pesto orzo salad was a great accompaniment too. My coworkers said great things about their caprese and smokey the meatloaf sandwiches, however everyone's absolute favorite were the chocolate chip cookies. They were chewy and perfect! I ate lunch here twice this past week and both times it was delicious! The way to go about it is to go with a friend and each order a different sandwich and split them so you get to try a half of each. So far my favorites (in this order): Turkey Club (I recommend adding jalapenos for an extra kick), the Pastrami (ask for light mustard or else they just pour a bunch on the bread), and their classic Italian submarine. I also like getting some chips on the side and throwing a handful or two into my sandwich. There is something about that crunch that adds and extra element. I have seen people eating soup here before as well and it looks delicious. I will have to try a half soup, half sandwich sometime. read more

Beware: everything looks and sounds good you will want it all!!! So far I've had three of the salads - they have all been delicious with fresh ingridients and the dressings are off the hook!!! I've also tasted two of their soups - incredible... they had the flavors I expected in the soup but they were also unique. So good!! The club sandwich here is amazing! I was close to the deli and decided to write a review because I have always had great sandwiches here! One of my favorite sandwiches ever is the club, from any deli or sandwich shop. This shop definitely has one of the best clubs on my list. I've also had the French dip which was pretty tasty as well. The au jus had just the right earthy kind of flavor. Their french fries are delicious, especially when paired with their dipping sauces. I took my girls to a great sandwich place today. They are picky eaters, so I was a little worried that they wouldn't have anything my girls would eat. That turned out to be no problem. All of the vegetables seemed to be not only lacking in quantity on the sub, but they also were not fresh. For example, the few pieces of tomato had a grainy texture that was not up to standard. It seems like based on the reviews that some people came here specifically for the kale caesar wrap and were really disappointed not to have their minds blown? I haven't had the wrap yet myself but I find that hilarious and I urge you to not let that stop you from trying Lou's out.

We ended up dissecting the sandwich and taking some lettuce out. Flavor was great! I will not there is no seating, so it is 100% a takeout spot. We ended up going to a park about a mile away to enjoy. The service was great, staff was kind, and we are eager to return to try the chicken parm.

I immediately asked if I could take him into the bathroom to help him, and I was told that only paying customers were allowed inside. I said that was fine and quickly purchased chips and drinks so I could get what he needed. What happened next was unbelievable. While I was frantically trying to help my son, they were attempting to kick him out, and the owner had someone standing there watching my son with the door open while I was inside purchasing the items. This was a child having a significant nosebleed, and instead of showing even a little compassion or understanding, the staff was rude, dismissive, and completely inconsiderate. I have never been treated this poorly as a customer. After this experience, I will never, ever spend another dime here, and I would strongly encourage others to think twice before giving this business their money.
