A small place with a few tables inside and outside. I tried the combo plate 3 with guava chicken, kalua pork, and ginger tare beef. My favorite by far is the guava chicken, its juicy, tender, and flavorful. The plate is huge and more than enough to share with 2 people with leftovers. I tried Angelica's Matcha Mountain and it was so refreshing and delicious, especially on a hot day. I would definitely recommend trying their shave shakes. The good: I had the 3 protein combo with macaroni salad and rice (comes with 2 sauces/seasonings) and the spicy slider with chicken katsu meat. The protein combo had a LOT of meat. My husband and I couldn't finish it. I got a strawberry cream soda and thought it was delicious. I liked the spicy slider sauce and slaw. I also tried the pineapple, passionfruit and smoked cherry shave ice with condensed milk. The interior is small but there are about 4 tables inside and some outdoor seating as well. Inside, they have Post-it notes and pens where you can draw some art and post it on their wall. The bad: The smoky cherry flavor tasted like artificial cherry medicine flavor. My husband liked it more than I did. I thought the shaved ice was a little bit too doused with syrup. Our cream soda drink was mostly ice. The katsu batter wasn't evenly golden. It was a bit chunky and thick. The Portuguese sausage was salty. I would've liked if the slaw and spicy sauce were separate in the sandwich rather than the slaw be tossed in the sauce (so that the slaw could stay crunchier). Stopped by after visiting Palos Verdes today. Small restaurant located in a shopping mall, but big flavor! We're not from the area so of course we wanted to try everything while we were there. Ordered the musubis (comes with 2, & they're huge) you get to choose your own protein the hubby selected Portuguese sausage and Kalua pork. He couldn't get over how flavorful the pork was. I had the combo plate with the guava chicken katsu. The portion of chicken was huge, it was dark meat and perfectly fried outside and juicy inside. Came on a bed of rice and fried noodles with a side of Mac salad and coleslaw. I opted for the apricot chili and the ginger taru sauce. Amazing flavor. I will say the sides were just ok. The Mac salad was bland and the sauce on the coleslaw was overpowering. Other than that little blunder everything else was perfection. We ordered the Nikki sunrise shave ice shake (#2 popular) Tasted like a tropical paradise. The shave ice was topped with a generous helping of vanilla ice cream which mixed well with the ice and juices. Had to also try the butter mochi as per others' recommendation. The cashier even asked our preference on the mochi (middle piece, side piece, or corner piece). We chose a side piece which was a perfect balance of chewy and delicious. I'd heard of a Hawaiian restaurant that opened up in Palos Verdes, and I'd heard good things about it, so I decided to grab lunch after hiking. I opted for the combo with guava chicken, rice, salad, and garlic noodles. Service was friendly and quick, and I got to enjoy it outside on the Promenade. The good: the guava chicken. Charbroiled, yet tender and not dry at all. There was a subtle sweetness to it, and given I love guava, it paired very well with the savory chicken. The bad: the rice and noodles. I opted for noodles as one of the side dishes, and unfortunately, they were not good. They were rubbery, soggy and utterly tasteless; as much as I love noodles, I could not finish those noodles given how bad they tasted. The rice was also a miss: so mushy that there was absolutely no texture to it. I ended up eating the guava chicken by itself before tossing the rest. Overall, I felt my meal at Big Island Eats was a miss, but maybe it was the combo I got. I figure I must've gone on an off day, so I'd be keen on returning to trying other dishes out! read more

The wait time at Good Stuff was too long today for lunch so we decided to try Big Island instead. We ordered a guava chicken plate lunch that came with rice and Mac salad and dressing on top of coleslaw, spam musubi, and a Chinese chicken salad with lemon vinaigrette on the side. The spam musubi were weirdly wrapped but tasty overall, although they offered them with sauce which was confusing to me (having grown up in Hawaii I've many a spam musubi and never have they come with sauce). The guava chicken was moist but the rice was not short grain rice but maybe more like old Ben's rice which was also strange. The Mac salad was pretty tasteless - and the coleslaw was raw shredded cabbage with a dressing on top. The chicken salad was fresh romaine lettuce with a handful of thin slices of chicken breast - and some red onions and sliced almonds. The dressing was mostly oil and not very tasty - but I did finish the entire salad. It's perhaps not fair to compare this plate lunch place to those in Hawaii - but I'll look forward to having a real plate lunch in Honolulu. read more

Came here for late lunch and got a shave ice (pineapple & lychee) and a #2 combo w/ the guava chicken & shredded pork. Portions were very hearty, and both were delicious. The main food was so filling, and I especially liked the chicken. Both the macaroni side and the noodles base were a bit on the bland side, but rice was good once it soaked up all the sauces. The shave ice was delicious and so refreshing. Service is friendly and fast, and there are some tables both inside and outside. I love this place, I've been here twice. It really is a mom and pop shop kind of tucked away but the food won't disappoint. The only thing I would stay away from is the spam Katsu, which is basically just fried spam. It wasn't that good. The top 3 proteins I recommend are: beef, Kalua pork and guava chicken (in that order). The beef is super tender and flavorful. Once combo order is enough to feed 2 people. We also got their shaved ice which is really good. When you order make sure you pick the syrups that are homemade because it's super unique. They have outdoor seating which is dog friendly. First off - Their shave ice is extremely good. The ice is perfectly soft textured and if you get it as a milkshake, the cream and shave ice flavors are perfect! That being said, the food my boyfriend and I tried today was not good at all. Tofu musubi had no flavor and the big island crunch is just furikake. The rice I believe wasn't cooled long enough after cooking or was overdone because it was mushy. The mac salad has no carrots or other veggies and tastes like nothing. No vinegar or taste of the mayo. It just tastes like wet noodles unfortunately. My boyfriend was happy with the crunch of the chicken sandwich (lipslidah) but he couldn't finish it because the oil I believe may have been old (smelled like crayons). All in all, maybe willing to try their other food items, but the shave ice might be the only thing we get from here for a bit. read more

My sister seen it was mentioned on ABCLA local news so my brother drove my sister and I to this Hawaiian eatery on a Sunday afternoon in late May. It is located in a hilly shopping center across from target shooing center. After parking, we found the hidden gem next to another restaurant. Inside is very small with 2 tables and outdoor seating. The owner seems nice and friendly. The menu was posted on the door and at the counter. I ordered guava chicken thighs with rice and macaroni salad. We didn't wait too long. The guava chicken had good aroma and moist drenched in guava sauce. The macaroni salad taste good with cabbage salad. My sister ordered garlic fried rice on the side and that was tasty with pieces of Portuguese sausage, eggs, green onions, and garlic. I think it needs more garlic. This place is full on legit! I was pleasantly surprised to find a local Hawaiian eatery at the Promenade on the Peninsula shopping center in Rolling Hills Estates. They're located on the ground level with plenty of parking. Whenever I try a new Hawaiian eatery, I always order their loco moco. That dish alone will tell me how legit the restaurant is. The loco moco patty, made of 100% angus beef, was thick and flavorful, sitting on a bed of hot rice with dark gravy all over! We all know it's about the gravy, and theirs is very flavorful! The two fried eggs on top were covered with Big Island Crunch (furikake) which made it extra flavorful. For $12, it was a very reasonably priced dish. For dessert, I got the baked butter mochi (creme Brulee style), Big Island Choco Cookie and the signature Choco Banana Bread. All three items were outstanding and definitely satisfied my sweet tooth! Seating was not available inside, but there's plenty of tables outside in the open shopping plaza. Service was friendly and full of aloha! I tried the spam masubi (each order comes with 2), the lava lava and shaved ice (pineapple coconut ice cream on bottom and coconut syrup and smoke cherry syrup). The lava lava had a bit too much going on for me but loved the shaved ice. Only thing is I would change the smoke cherry to something else next time. I would rate the spam misubi a 4/10. For almost 8 dollars the spam wasn't thick enough. I took a bite immediately after getting it and the nori was soggy. The way they fold it is just not fun to eat. You have to take two bites just to get to the spam. And the rice is not even. It's not that hard to use a mold. read more

The shaved ice was good but they didn't offer lids for the bowl and seemed very confused when I asked for another bowl to place on top to cover it. Drinks are over $5 for basically a cup full of ice and a few ounces of actual soda. I asked for a refill on soda which would cost them a few cents. They said no to that as well. No refund. We got the guava chicken combo again with noodles. Still one of our faves. We also tried some other items as well. Menuhune Fries w Ginger Tare Beef (5): Pleasantly surprised! The fries were thin and crispy. The beef had fantastic flavor and was super tender. We got the sauces on the side and was most impressed with the garlic aioli. So good! Lava Lava shave ice (5): holy chocolate! This was amazing! Just a perfect blend of shave ice, ice cream, chocolate, and strawberry flavors! Must try! Kei's Lani shave shake (5): not as sweet as the lava lava so eat this first or that lava lava will overpower the nice subtle flavors. This was still really good. I'm thoroughly convinced now that you can't go wrong with any of their shave ice offerings. Just super solid all the way through. I don't even think I've had shave ice this good on the islands. I always get excited when I find another place that serves Hawaiian food! This place was located on the first floor in The Promenade. They serve shaved ice, shakes, Kona coffee, loco moco, spam musubi, and rice plates where you can make your own combos (pick your protein, noodles and/or rice base, and sauce(s)). We ordered the Loco Moco, a combo plate with Kalua Pork and Guava Chicken with half noodles and half rice. We tried the Big Island Crunch (just a dry mix with furikake seasoning) and the Guava sauce. The Loco Moco was really delicious! It's really flavorful. It tastes very authentic. We would have ordered another one to go if we knew it tasted this good! The combination plate was also delicious! Very generous portions. Great flavors too! We also ordered the Tilly's Tiki shake ( strawberry syrup, guava syrup, vanilla ice cream, strawberry lilikoi juice) which was sweet and delicious! And I ordered an Iced Kona Coffee and it tasted just as good as the one I had back in Hawaii. Strong and smooth. Service was great. Staff members were friendly. Lots of free parking in the promenade. Food and service were amazing! Prices are low for what you get. I was amazed with the quality, portion size, and with how fast items came out. The spam katsu was delicious! It was perfectly cooked with a nice crunchy crust and moist interior, paired with a rich and slightly spicy sauce. I recommend ordering the shave ice at the end of your meal - the portions are generous and the flavors and texture will not disappoint. I normally don't leave reviews at places, but my experience at B.I.E. was so nice I had to. The staff are warm and welcoming, and the ambiance is family friendly. Hawaiian food and shaved ice?! Count us in. They're located near the other eateries inside the promenade area. The parking in the parking garage downstairs is the closest. We parked up top so we had to walk a little bit farther over. Everything on the menu looks so good here. I like that they give you options for the combo plates depending on how many proteins, bases, and sauces you want. It makes it a lot easier if you can't decide on just one item, because trust me it's difficult! I love loaded fries though so I had to go for the Menehune Fries. You can choose one protein and two sauces, so it made my difficult decision a bit easier. I chose the guava chicken (because where else can you get GUAVA chicken??) with the big island crunch furikake & sweet onion sauces. Such a great combo! They don't drench it in sauce but you can still get the flavor from the chicken, and the actual sauces you selected. I usually order more beef dishes instead of chicken but I'm so glad I ordered this guava chicken. It was so tender! Don't forget about your dessert either. You can do Hawaiian shaved ice, or a shaved ice shake! The shakes looked delicious but we chose to do a regular shaved ice with a scoop of ice cream instead. The prices are affordable and you can choose which one based how many flavors you wanted. We narrowed it down to a custom 2-flavor shaved ice with lilikoi and ube, topped with snowcap and vanilla ice cream. The ube flavor was very light so I couldn't quite get that ube flavor, but I loved the lilikoi! Our friends ordered guava and it was very pretty presentation too. I like that they don't give you too much syrup that you end up with a sugary soup at the end, it was just the perfect amount and reminded me of authentic shaved ice on the island! Great Hawaiian Spot in PV! We were hiking nearby and since we were in the area, we thought it'd be great to hit up King's Hawaiian. Sadly they do not do outdoor seating but I found this place even closer to us! So we drove here after our hike. Parking is easy, as there are a bunch of businesses in this complex. I had been before to eat pre-covid. We got to the restaurnt and tried to snag a couple of tables and put it together. Ordered our food - two plates with guava chicken and pulled pork, wtih nooodles and salad. The shaved ice looked great, so I ordered a lychee and mango with condensed milk. Food came out fairly fast and was delicious! The portions were pretty big - me and my BF probably could have shared one plate! But it made for great leftovers. The staff was very nice and friendly! This restaurant is a great example of why I love Yelp so much. There is no way I would ever have found this gem without this site and why I dedicate so much time and effort to write the reviews that I do. This place is another five star place to me. To put it simply and for the TLDR readers, the food is amazing, the prices are fair and the service is far beyond expectations. I will start with the worst part about this place, the location. This "mall" or shopping center is literally a ghost town. It is complicated and the stairs are hidden from view. Big Island is on the 1st floor and in the corner of this odd collection of barren spaces. As mentioned, the food is simply amazing. It's not just the manner in which it is cooked but the unique flavors that come through from the care and interest in preparing something unique for their customers. We had guava chicken, kalua pig, guava chicken katsu and beef. The guava sauce has so much depth with not too much sweetness or overly salty. I wish I would have had it on the chicken rather than on the side. Went back and had the shave ice and that alone is a reason to come here. I have had hundreds of servings of shave ice from Hawaii, Wailoa, Matsumoto, all the greats from back in the day. This Big Island shave ice is by far the best I have had in the states and the syrup is completely different than anything I have ever encountered. Made in house, the flavor just explodes when it hits your mouth. I was lucky enough to have strawberry and lilikoi (passion fruit) and was shocked at how good it was. Went back inside again, (yes, three times) and tried the chocolate, banana bread. This was not as great as the other items, but still pretty damn great. The promenade has all but become a ghost town of a mall. That doesn't mean there aren't hidden gems tucked away in it though. Big Island Eats is one such gem in PV, and that's saying a lot cause PV's gems are found in nature and hikes and views, not food. Anyway, Hawaiian food is always a good experience so go ham on their beef, kalua pork, loco moco, so on and so forth. The portions aren't gonna be ungodly crazy like Torrance's L&L but this is definitely a mom and pop shop so they nailed the homey comfort food down. Not much in terms of seating but they package everything in a nice takeout fashion so order, eat outside, and be merry. Or you can take it home, either or. From their bio on their website, seems like the owner's grew up in the area and her parents are from Hawaii. So glad she's sharing her recipes with us! My family and I tried their ginger tare beef, loco moco, Portuguese sausage and musubi. Great portions for the price, and great flavors as well. I had gochujang aioli and big island crunch on my beef, the aioli wasn't spicy but gave a good flavor kick anyway. Only slightly disappointing thing was the missing egg in the loco moco! I also got Niki's sunset shake which was amazing especially in this heatwave. Pineapple coconut ice cream siting in guava pineapple juice - YUM!
