I really want to like this place but the price and size proportions force to feel like this is incredibly overpriced and not ok. THE GOOD: There are tons of options here and the flavors are great. They stay traditional to Korean bingsoo while also having items that aren't. I love how everything tastes and it's great quality! THE BAD: The size of one bingsoo is literally smaller than my hand and costs ~$20 with a side of mochi. The mochi is also tiny and dinky little guys. $20 for a bingsoo that is smaller than rhe size of my hand is just diabolical, im sorry but this is so overpriced and ridiculous. It's shaved milk I've and some red bean paste for christ sake it can't be that expensive to buy. The best advice i would give is to just make these darn proportions larger because what the heck am I paying $20 for a tiny bowl of ice. I've been a customer at Okrumong for the past six years, and I've always enjoyed the quality of their bingsu and taiyaki. Unfortunately, my visit on July 25 was a completely different experience. The black sesame bingsu had a strong pepper-like taste, making it unpleasant to eat. On top of that, the taiyaki we ordered didn't arrive until about 30 minutes later, so we no longer had time to enjoy it at the restaurant and had to take it to-go. When we politely brought up the taste of the bingsu with an employee (a young man with glasses and shoulder-length hair), he became defensive, spoke to us rudely, and walked away in the middle of the conversation before we could finish explaining the issue. At that point, we weren't even complaining about the delayed taiyaki. We simply wanted to let them know something seemed wrong with the dessert. We did eventually receive an apology for the delayed taiyaki, but only after we asked about the reason for the delay. The employee explained that he had mixed up our order with another table. I've supported Okrumong for years, which makes this experience especially disappointing. Everyone makes mistakes, and a delayed order or a food quality issue can happen. What really stood out was how the situation was handled. I hope the management takes customer service more seriously, because this visit was far below the standard I've come to expect from Okrumong. read more

I've been coming to Okrumong for years, more times than I can reasonably count. I've brought my parents, my kids, friends, people visiting from out of town. It has become one of those places you stop debating because you already know what you're going to get. In the South Bay, when somebody wants bingsu, this is still one of the first places that comes to mind. And the frustrating thing is that the dessert is genuinely very good. The snow is properly fine and soft, closer to fresh powder than shaved ice and the flavors are restrained enough that you can bring almost anyone here without worrying that they're going to be assaulted by sugar. The red bean works. The mochi balls are excellent and worth adding, even if you'll feel mildly extorted every time you pay for extras. I've worked through most of the menu over the years and rarely had anything fundamentally bad. The taiyaki deserves some credit too. The cheese version in particular is ridiculously satisfying and the red bean is dependable. Coffee is forgettable, but nobody should be driving here because they heard whispers about the espresso program. The problem is everything surrounding the food. Okrumong has always been expensive and once you start adding mochi or toppings, a simple dessert can become an oddly serious financial decision. I can forgive expensive when the product earns it, and much of the time the bingsu does. What becomes harder to forgive is paying premium prices while feeling as though your presence is something the people behind the counter have to tolerate. What makes it stranger is that this doesn't feel like some anonymous chain staffed by people who happened to clock in that afternoon. You get the sense that the people running the place are personally connected to it, which should make the hospitality feel warmer. Somehow, it often has the opposite effect. There is a reluctant energy behind the counter, as though serving customers is the interruption rather than the reason the doors are open. After enough visits, you stop writing it off as somebody simply having a bad day. That matters more than people think. Hospitality isn't performing happiness or pretending every customer is your long lost cousin. It is simply making people feel that you are glad they chose to spend their time and money with you. A hello. A little patience. Some warmth. Okrumong has a product people clearly still want, yet too often the experience around it feels like the business is operating on whatever affection people have left from its better years. And you can feel those years receding. There was a time when places like this felt like destinations. Lines, energy, people making a special trip for Korean desserts that were harder to find elsewhere. Now there are more choices, better designed cafes, more interesting dessert shops and operators who understand that good food alone doesn't buy permanent loyalty. I still come back because, annoyingly, the bingsu is good enough to keep pulling me back. That may be the most honest compliment and criticism I can give them. I'd love to see this place feel cared for again, because the actual product deserves better than the experience surrounding it. read more

The consistency is more like a soup but my family enjoyed it. I was expecting more mochi. The strawberry bingsoo was really good with sweet fresh strawberries. Overall, this place is my favorite dessert place in South Bay. Location: next to Jang Su Jang restaurant so easy to come by after dinner. Has a big, free parking lot. Decor: cute decor with books on the side and a few tables inside. Service: efficient and speedy. Menu/food: I really like their bingsoo a lot, but what I really love is their boong-uh-ppang (taiyaki). I also love their red bean, which is not too sweet but rich and flavorful. They advertise that the red bean is imported from Korea, and it really is better than most other places. When the taiyaki comes out piping hot with crispy exterior and chewy inside with red bean, it's sooo good. I like their custard filling too. Probably best taiyaki I've had anywhere in southern Cal. I first visited Okrumong for a coffee outing and was impressed to see that they offer Stereoscope coffee! I've had Stereoscope coffee before in the OC and became a fan. I'm so glad that I can get this coffee here in the South Bay. During that same coffee outing, I was treated to some Okrumong's shave ice. My friend and I tried the Red Bean Shave Ice with mochi. The shave was so smooth. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up coming back to Okrumong a few weeks later and tried their Strawberry Shave Ice. The Strawberry Shave Ice is such a refreshing treat. They pack it with strawberries! It's delicious and a great treat for a hot day. I thought the shave ice would be my favorite treat here but it turns out their takiyaki is it what really won my heart. You have to order at least two pieces and I chose to get their mozzarella cheese and custard. They make these fresh with each order. It comes out piping hot and is so delicious. I hate to leave bad reviews especially for a Korean business but this young kid with shoulder length hair suddenly yelled at my child while I was ringing him my order, who was touching the individual wrapped mochi that were out on display. While my kid was squeezing it, this guys straight up yelled saying "don't squish those!" Hubby and I found this little spot on yelp (thanks yelp)! It was his first Korean dessert shop ever, so he was excited for it and so was I. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the beautiful relaxing music that gave it the place a special touch. The high ceilings and bookshelves is also a nice touch. Most of the books are in Korean, so if you don't read in Korean and you're coming alone to relax and read, bring a book. The service was excellent! We weren't sure if we were going to stay because our baby was sleeping, so we ordered to go even though we really wanted to dine in. Baby ended up waking up and went inside with us and we were all able to enjoy it as a family. The best part, is that they were patient with our order and flexible with changing it to dine in. The snow was a bit too liquidy and it lacked that black sesame flavor once you got into the middle portion. It did not have much black sesame inside.
