We sat in the back room away from that. I ended up ordering a dozen oysters with a Cesar salad. The Cesar salad came with dressing on the side, the salad dressing was super vinegary. I just kept tasting pure vinegar. I did not finish it. The oysters were super grainy. They had broken shells in them. I had to be very careful with eating them. I normally slurp my oysters with no problem. These I had to carefully inspected before ingestion. The service was expected to be slow since it is a bar. A lot of people drinking. So far this has not been a stellar experience. Have been here 40 minutes took ten minutes to get our first beverage. Mine is now empty and has been for several minutes. There is one lady working very hard. Our order has now been taken ... I ordered a crab cake with a salad and mashed potatoes, my partner ordered salmon with a salad and green beans.... Second time at Big Jim's and had a great experience but we almost missed it because Yelp said they were closed on Fridays. They should have been much busier at 8 pm on a Friday night. The bar area was busier than the dining room. We started with a half dozen oysters. As I ate them I discovered 2 bonus oysters fused to the bottoms of the ones I was served. I've never had that happen before. The oysters were fresh and briny. I wish they'd given me more than one small lemon wedge with them. Also, their shucker for some small shell shards in my oysters. We ordered an app from their specials board: mako shark nuggets. These were really good, large chunks of dense, mild fish, batter dipped and deep fried. These came with a sweet and spicy Thai chili sauce. I had a bowl of what they called Cream of Crab soup. It was tasty but it wasn't really cream of crab. This was thin. It didn't seem to have cream in it. There was a tartness to it that made it seem like there was lemon juice in it. It also seemed to have been made from chicken base. There were big chunks of yummy crab floating around in it. For an entree, my husband ordered the diver scallops with fries and a caesar salad. I tried a scallop and it was amazing. Exactly the way scallops should be cooked. They were buttery and delicious with a nice crust. The salad was good but the fries were a little underdone. I had the steamer pot with snow crab, clams, mussels, shrimp, corn and new potatoes. The seafood was great. The shrimp were a little heavy on the old bay and a little overdone. The mussels and clams were good and the size I prefer. The cluster of snow crabs was the best ones I've had in awhile. Service was attentive and friendly. The cream of crab wasn't bursting with flavor but then I added the Jo Bay and some crackers and that was good! I did ask for some shredded cheese for my salad which was an extra charge, ok... fine. I'm a York local and have been to this place physically three times in the past two years and each time I was either ignored at the bar, the counter, or was asked to wait although the bar/dinning room was mostly empty. Thought using a delivery app would be better. WRONG!!! Tried... to order from multiple times (including tonight), and in every case our order was received, marked as being processed, then abruptly canceled after 90+ minutes. In all cases the app would credit the order but by the time we were notified everywhere else was closed. If there wasn't a severe lack of seafood places in York we wouldn't have and now won't try again. First world problems I grant you but I can't recommend this place. I can only recommend that you take your business to somewhere more like Weis or Giant for your seafood. At least they will serve you sub-par seafood instead of advertising as the best yet never deliver. read more

My boyfriend and I grabbed dinner here last night. As we were walking out, we were called negros by a customer at the bar. We stepped out to calm down before we decided to come back and speak to the owner. Upon returning back to the restaurant we noticed the customer who made the racist remark was still seated at the bar. We expressed to the owner how we felt about the racist comment that was directed at us for no reason. The owner assured us that he would take action against the customer in the future but refused to ask him to leave because he was drunk. That was not an acceptable reason for the owner to allow a racist customer to continue to dine in his establishment. The owner did nothing to make it right besides offering a half-ass apology on behalf of the customer. I will not be dining here again, if you're a person of color I strongly do not recommend supporting this business. read more

So, as far as the food goes, I liked it. I had Cream of Crab soup, Onion Rings, and Steamed Clams. My wife had snow crab legs that she thought were just ok for the price. For me, the food was good unlike some reviews on Yelp. The Kitchen Manager was great! He came out several times (we were with a group of 9). Thank God the kitchen staff delivered the food since the server was non-existent during the meal. Drinks were not refilled and tools for the crab legs were not delivered. The worst experience. As someone else stated ( I read the reviews after we went) no one was wearing masks. We got takeout and stood around waiting for someone to wait on us while our food sat on the counter getting cold. We drove 20 minutes home and when we opened our bag,our salads were not there. I immediately called back and after explaining my dilemma they told me to come back and pick them up. I told them I would not drive 20 minutes back and allow my food to get even colder. I asked for a refund or a gift and the staff started arguing about why my salads hadn't been put in the bag. I eventually just hung up, as I was not going to give these unprofessional people my credit card number and since I will never give them my business again, a gift card was useless. If I could give this place a zero I would... We were passing through and looking for some good seafood.. specifically blue crab. After coming back to our table... still no food. Finally when the food arrived it was such a disappointment. The calamari was tiny, greasy and rubbery and the sauces were gross. The oysters were good except for the weird sauce it came with. The captain's combo was a plate of 1 corn, 2 red potatoes, 7 tiny mussels, 6 small clams, a handful of shrimp and 2 small crab clusters... steamed, no seasoning. The plate came with a cocktail sauce and melted butter on the side. Not to mention everything was cold. The staff was extremely unattentive and when our waitress asked me how everything was, I was honest with her.... and she JUST WALKED AWAY. No apologies, no comments, nothing. I was honestly floored by how rude that was. If our travels bring us back here - we know where NOT to go. If you like good tasting seafood - this is not the place to go. Save your money and don't eat here. This is not a restaurant; it's a pub with a kitchen turning out some of the worst seafood I've had in a long time. As I arrived, I was informed that the restaurant dining area had been converted to a pool hall which is great for a pub, but Jim's web site does not reflect this. They directed me to the bar area to get a table. The waitress was actually the bartender and although she was pleasant her focus was on her bar customers. The food I ordered (Seafood Platter) had very little taste, poor presentation, and I had to ask for everything I needed. This included silverware, salt, pepper and condiments. The crab cake was the worst I've ever had. It appeared to be a lump of bread filler with a few small pieces of crab smashed into the top of the mound. The other seafood on the platter was not as bad but not worth the $25 I spent on it. The best part of my meal was the mashed potatoes but I had to ask for butter and they supplied me with melted crab butter which was not my favorite. There was no follow up on how I liked the food and honestly I only finished about half of what I ordered due to the poor quality. Bartender never said a word about what I left behind. Unfortunately I did not read all the bad yelp reviews before dining at Big Jim's. Shame on me for not doing my homework 1st. This appears to be a popular pub and I think Big Jim should re-classify his establishment to that effect so out of towners such as myself will know what they're getting into. From the outside this looks like a "hole in the wall" kind of place. However, those places usually have good food. This place has well intentions of serving good food but poorly executed it. The $24 "rockfish" or whatever they brought out was dry around the edges and rubbery. For a fish that's not usually fishy was super fishy in taste. The crab pretzel was ok.. The pound of shrimp or lack thereof was cooked once and reheated to order. The waitress seemed nice but lacked knowledge of the menu. Asked for a mango or peach flavored beverage.. Was offered an orange crush. Asked for a zesty salad dressing.. Was recommended the caesar... Anyway.. This place has potential to be good but lacks the motivation to execute a good plate of food. The onion rings were crisp, hot, and served with a delicious "boom boom sauce". The crab and shrimp alfredo was creamy with a large portion of jumbo lump crab on top. Then the cream of crab, now that was delicious, highly recommend. Then I ordered a collossel crab cake, with lump crab.
