My Empty Beverage ...
Tracey M.

So far this has not been a stellar experience. Have been here 40 minutes took ten minutes to get our first beverage. Mine is now empty and has been for several minutes. There is one lady working very hard. Our order has now been taken ... I ordered a crab cake with a salad and mashed potatoes, my partner ordered salmon with a salad and green beans.... Meanwhile my drink is still empty .... I also asked for another beverage at the time we ordered... Beverage refilled ...Very nice garden salad... The food was very good and service improved from that point... This review started as a 2 but ended up a 4 star experience. I like to keep it local so I am glad it ended well. I would recommend Big Jim's but maybe not on a Friday nite on a holiday weekend....

Second time at Big Jim's and had a great experience but we almost missed it because Yelp said they were closed on Fridays. They should have been much busier at 8 pm on a Friday night. The bar area was busier than the dining room. We started with a half dozen oysters. As I ate them I discovered 2 bonus oysters fused to the bottoms of the ones I was served. I've never had that happen before. The oysters were fresh and briny. I wish they'd given me more than one small lemon wedge with them. Also, their shucker for some small shell shards in my oysters. We ordered an app from their specials board: mako shark nuggets. These were really good, large chunks of dense, mild fish, batter dipped and deep fried. These came with a sweet and spicy Thai chili sauce. I had a bowl of what they called Cream of Crab soup. It was tasty but it wasn't really cream of crab. This was thin. It didn't seem to have cream in it. There was a tartness to it that made it seem like there was lemon juice in it. It also seemed to have been made from chicken base. There were big chunks of yummy crab floating around in it. For an entree, my husband ordered the diver scallops with fries and a caesar salad. I tried a scallop and it was amazing. Exactly the way scallops should be cooked. They were buttery and delicious with a nice crust. The salad was good but the fries were a little underdone. I had the steamer pot with snow crab, clams, mussels, shrimp, corn and new potatoes. The seafood was great. The shrimp were a little heavy on the old bay and a little overdone. The mussels and clams were good and the size I prefer. The cluster of snow crabs was the best ones I've had in awhile. Service was attentive and friendly. Meal was also really affordable for seafood.

Big Jim's was much anticipated but it fell short for me. The waitress was pleasant, the restaurant was clean but the food was mediocre at best. I ordered cream of crab soup and a small side salad. The cream of crab wasn't bursting with flavor but then I added the Jo Bay and some crackers and that was good! I did ask for some shredded cheese for my salad which was an extra charge, ok... fine. I tried the shrimp basket with fries and that was just ok. It could use some more seasoning . Not sure if I'll come back .

Staff is awesome! Seafood chowder ready to be inhaled.. I could dunk bread in it or pour it over noodles! Delightful! Hush puppies perfectly crunchy outside and bready inside.. I ate more than I should have. Our server enthusiastically explained the Specials of the Day... hard to choose, but we picked Veal Neptune (tender veal, succulent scallops atop of these awesome fettuccine noodles blessed with a heavenly creamy sauce)... loooved it (my husband doesn't even like pasta, but this converted him). Classic BLT accompanied fresh avocado (WOWness) with a generous portion of fries. I came here specifically for a seafood bucket. They weren't having the Andouille sausage today (maybe next time). I had Cajun shrimp and steamed crab. I wish the crab was seasoned in the yummy Cajun spice too, but butter and lemon fixed it up. Our server rocked!!! Literally, she sang to every song that played... good music mix !! Our glasses were never empty and the bar let us carry our tab over to the dining room. The bar is cool with lots of TV's, wonderful bartender. A down home feel. The seafood market is front and center, but it doesn't smell like a seafood market! Like other reviews have said, the store front does not explain the inside! As I always say, the inside is what counts!!! The yummy in my tummy makes me a happy happy lady!! P.S. I asked for a pair of the kitchen grade food gloves to get messy, down and dirty, ALL up in there :)

This place is horrible. The food is nasty and the service is unprofessional I ordered some kind of dish they advertised for the day, called Salmon collars. First of all I never heard of any fish called that, but I like to try new food. Soon as the waiter brought the dish out, I was disgusted by the looks of it. It was really nasty and tasted like uncooked bad fish The waiter was rude after I asked if I can please exchange the so called fish for something else Stay away from this off the road so called seafood restaurant

Definitely a local hangout! Had the seafood chowder a bit salty but I don't use a lot so not the best judge. Fish and chip basket was good.

The chef came out and explained how to add the sauces and extras, (bamboo shoots, basil, jalapeños) for the best taste. I thought that was a nice touch for those who weren't familiar with eating pho or various Vietnamese dishes. Food was absolutely delicious. Portion size was incredible. Would definitely come back, price for the amount of food you get was on point. Located in a small strip mall in Queensgate shopping center, there is plenty of parking.

I had a pork quesadilla that was a monster! We also ordered some some Mexican corn as an appetizer. That was amazing in itself. Very flavorful and probably one of the best either of us has ever had! My hubby enjoyed his his chicken bowl that there were some nice selections to have as go withs. My pork quesadilla was really amazing....so much so that I just had the leftovers for my work lunch today and it reheated so very nice that I would say it was almost better than the night I had it! You order at the bar and they give you a buzzer when your food is ready to be picked up at the window. My friend was excited because they had bourbon and burgers, which hit the spot for her. She got a black and bleu burger with a side salad and raved about the burger. I opted for a gyro with fries, and a German pilsner. My sandwich was good, but I thought it needed more tomatoes and onions. The fries had a kick and were a very generous sized portion. If I'm ever in the York area again, I'd definitely stop back in.

Some of the appetizer choices were the calamari, fried kale and crab claw lollipops. All three were absolutely outstanding, and the portions were large. For dinner, our choices are rockfish, lobster, mac & cheese, filet mignon, or grilled chicken green curry. Again, the portion sizes were large and everyone enjoyed their meals. You see, back in 17th century England, private houses would open their homes to the public and sell food and beer. Hence, public house. Over time, they dropped the "lic house" and just called them pubs. Because you never dropped the "lic house" makes me think that you haven't evolved like you should have. And frankly, your food is proof. In fact, it even made me nostalgic. But not in the way you might think. You see, I loved making fun food concoctions when I was a kid. My sister and I would watch this corny show called "Zoom" on Maryland public television, where the kid hosts would make recipes sent in from all over the country. We'd make homemade peanut butter cups using Jif and semisweet chocolate chips. Or weird sandwich combinations like pickles and potato chips and cheese and jelly. The seafood egg rolls weren't the worst part of my meal, but they were definitely sophomoric--as if a kid chef-in-training was asked to whip something up from Chinese food leftovers. Seafood should never taste fishy, yet these did. One bite hit me like something that had been sitting a little too long above the waterline. Not to mention, they were laying on a greasy glob of some mayonnaise accompaniment disguised as a fancy garnish you'd see on MasterChef. One word: Ick. The ahi tacos. Oh boy. My mind fills with seawater the moment I think of them because they tasted as if they had been fished right out of the ocean and then placed on my plate. They were wet. Soaked. Drenched. The gelatinous seaweed clump on each taco wasn't culinary-forward, just unappetizing. I took one bite and wished I could spit it back out, but I reluctantly swallowed it. My esophagus is now aquaphobic thanks to you. The moment the coconut jasmine rice hit my mouth, my tastebuds took the red eye to the coconut tree haven of the Maldives. Normally, this wouldn't be a bad thing, but the rice and coconut had no cohesion. It tasted like my younger self dumping a handful of shredded coconut--the sweetened kind my mom kept in the pantry for the wool on her Easter-shaped lamb cake--into a cup of microwaveable rice. The only redeeming aspect of our meal was your kind, charismatic waiter. He was lovely in every way--attentive, sweet, and helpful. He would have been an incredible host on "Zoom." If only his personality made the food taste better. For your sake, I hope you learn to evolve your kitchen's offerings beyond the amateurish trio I experienced. If not, your restaurant's bones may end up fossilized alongside every other place that couldn't adapt.
