Wow! Just wow! If I can give less than 1 rating I would! I read a previous post where the guy behind the counter (who was not wearing a mask or gloves by the way) was rude, but I'm one to find out for myself. It is absolutely true. This was our first time here. We heard of good places in Winchester and wanted to try. We came out from the Chantilly area and we are never coming back to this establishment. We'd love to try the food, but it's not worth it. There are plenty of other good restaurants around. We didn't know how they worked (as far as ordering) But, "Hi, welcome." would be a good start. Even a quick hint that we should order online. The signs he is talking about are paper QR scanners taped to the wall. Many establishments implement the QR scanning for ordering and I have always found the staff happy to provide assistance and even recommend items from their menu. We had trouble ordering online here because the site may have been experiencing some issues at that moment. Instead he gives us a quick glance and says, "Did you order yet? You can't just stand there!" I was close to finishing my order when he decided to acknowledge us with this remark. Needless to say, we took our business elsewhere and had pleasant experiences. We let those establishments know we appreciated kind customer service. Thank you, Hideaway Cafe and Hopscotch coffee. These two establishments left us with positive experiences and an interest to return to Winchester. We are happy to support businesses especially in times like this. Don't take my word for it, just read related previous reviews and his responses or experience it yourself. Delicious, homemade bagels. I ordered a vanilla latte and a breakfast sandwich (an everything bagel with bacon and egg), and it was delicious. The bagel had the right amount of crust on the outside and softness on the inside. I was just visiting, but this spot felt like a neighborhood favorite, with friendly service and an eclectic mix of seating and plenty of group tables. I've tried this place a couple of times and can say the bagels are as good as advertised. I ordered the Dr. P and it was easily one of the best bagel sandwiches I have ever had. Contrary to what a lot of the reviewers have suggested, we did find that the owner was very friendly and pleasant. The only critique is the fact the online ordering service is far from flawless. We ordered 4 bagels online (two of which were identical so we hit "2" for quantity on those bagels). After placing the order, I got a text back asking, "3 bagels?" to which I replied, "No, 4 . . ." and ran down my order again. Almost 30 minutes went by without hearing anything, so we went to the shop to check in. When I asked about the order, the owner said he didn't receive the response that I sent back to him (I double-checked to make sure the text was sent and saw that it had been sent - we'll just chalk it up to technological glitches). I'm glad we did go in to check on things in person, otherwise we never would have gotten our breakfasts. The long story short, the bagels were worth the extra wait and the owner was very accommodating, so all was good. The only suggestion I would have is that if you are ordering two or more identical items, you should order each one separately as opposed to using the quantity feature because apparently it creates some confusion when you indicate you are ordering more than one of the same thing. read more

The first thing you are confronted with are all these signs with rules. It feels unwelcoming and really passive aggressive. You sound like you're annoyed by your own customers. I was turned off by the requirement to order online on a system that made it near impossible to order for a family of five with special requests. Don't even try ordering coffee from here, unless it's just black coffee, and even then I don't know. The online ordering provides no info about what coffee is available, even though Yelp and the actual storefront says he sells coffee. The owner is unresponsive to inquiries via text or call, and - COVID aside - seems to be doing everything possible to keep people out of his store, short of boarding up the door. I'm sure the bagels are fine, but if you say you sell coffee and I actually want to buy it, maybe don't ignore customers or incorrectly advertise. read more

We can all moan about service nowadays, but Lenny has it very clear that you must order online before you walk in. Hubby and I have Saturday breakfast dates. We decided to visit Big L's since it was next door to Piper Dan's Keltic Shoppe's new Winchester location. Hubby was looking forward to Big L's bagels and I was looking forward to relaxing inside sipping on great coffee. Our last visit to Big L's was great. We were greeted with a "Welcome" (which I know is rare) and the place had such a cool, relaxing vibe. This was pre-Covid. Post-Covid: We walked in and were shocked. The place was dark and we were greeted by two men who just stared at us. No hello, just stares. Then realized the seating area was blocked off. Just as I was saying good morning, a young lady walking in said we had to order outside. We turned to the door and a hand written note in our face stated "If you didn't order get out." And that's exactly what we did. Note to owner: Being a small local business owner during covid was extremely difficult!! The loss of staff and revenue must have been devastating. Kudos to you for staying in business! Walking into your establishment from the left one would not normally walk past the entrance to look at the front window. After standing in front of the visually very busy window for a few minutes trying to read everything we decided to go to a place where we could sit inside.
