Therefore, I created my own cuss word: cheesesteak. So I'd be like CHEESESTEAK YOU! And WHAT THE CHEESESTEAK? So, now in 2015, I'm bringing it back, baby. BIG MIKE'S PHILLY STEAKS IS CHEESESTEAKING GOOD! No, but really, came here after some hard pick-up basketball with my co-worker, as per our Thursday tradition for the summer. I just wanted some big, hankering food, and I knew I would find it here. I ordered a 12" cheesesteak with mushrooms, spicy peppers, and cheese wizz. The cheese was definitely good (I've had cheesesteaks with this kind of cheese and the regular melted cheese varieties, and I almost consider them differently) and the peppers were QUITE spicy. The mushrooms worked well with the overall sandwich, and it just was an enjoyable and flavorful experience overall. In addition, it was just a big sandwich. At around $10, it wasn't too bad a deal, especially given that it was delicious. The decor--like pictures of NBA stars who had eaten there and sports memorabilia--is pretty cool and welcoming as well; this place is a nice location in the heart of downtown El Segundo. Plus, they have a free parking lot! That's always a plus in my book in the LA area. So, if you're not a dirty CHEESESTEAK, come here. Don't say I didn't CHEESESTEAKING tell you so. read more

The best and only place I've found (so far) to get a delicious east coast Philly cheesesteak sandwich on the west side The meat is perfect, the cheese holds it all together but of course the star is the bread! You can top it anyway you like with options of lettuce, tomato, onion, sweet and spicy peppers. They come in (3) sizes 6in, 12in or 18in. Yes, 18in lol! I had a friend get the chicken philly which looked excellent as well. Another friend got wings and was not happy, so don't do it! Stick to the plan and get the philly! Of course I had the fries! They're a little thin for my liking but they were delicious and would get them again! Upgrade to cheese fries with their cheese sauce! Big Mike's popped up my Yelp page and all I wanted was a sammy so off I went to Big Mike's. Big Mike's is on Main Street in El Segundo and appears to be a local hangout. During my visit only two or three people were in the restaurant. Their menu has many different sammies and salads. I chose the traditional Philly Cheese Steak sammy. The sammy was large and had plenty of meat covered in cheese. The meat was seasoned and had a slight spicy flavor. I couldn't identify the cheese, but it was good. Overall, a good sammy, but not on par of a Philly Cheese Steak from Philadelphia. My ticket for the sammy and soft drink was $13.25. read more

Absolutely unimpressive except for the fact that an incredible heaping of chopped garlic on your fries will make your breath reek and friends recoil the rest of the day while the huge pile of dark brown and tasteless meat on the roll will make a helluva bowel movement as the peppers help push the mass through your large intestine. Since I'm already a Big Michael, it was only a matter of time before I inevitably made it to Big Mike's Philly Steaks & Subs in El Segundo to try one of their signature Cheese Steaks. The guys behind the counter were cool, but dry bread, light cheese, tough steak, and weak toppings created a Cheese Steak that may force me to become thin Mike. A 12" Philly Cheese Steak is $8.59 and comes with thin slices of Ribeye Steak served on a Steak Roll with choice of cheese (White American, Provolone, or Cheez Whiz) and toppings (Grilled Onions, Hot Peppers, Sweet Peppers, Tomatoes, Pickles, & Lettuce). The guy taking my order recommended White American Cheese and the Works. Ok, and double up on the Hot Peppers. The sandwich was hefty, but really didn't deliver the flavors, beefiness, or cheesiness I was hoping for from a good Philly Cheese Steak. The crust and gristle needed a LOT more cheese to cover their toughness. Big Mike's has plenty of parking in the side lot shared with other businesses. Inside there were a couple TVs with ESPN and tables along a brick wall. It's a local vibe with Philly decor that's cleaner than most similar sandwich and hot dog joints. No complaints at all with the service, prices, or atmosphere. The lone problem was the meh quality of the sandwich that resembled a cheap hoagie more than a great Philly Cheese Steak. read more

I'm going to start this review by stating that I am a "BIG" fan of Big Mike's. Located in the heart of El Segundo, this restaurant has the perfect location on Main Street, as it is halfway between Imperial Hwy & El Segundo Blvd; thereby making it accessible to everyone in the area. But no matter how good of a location a restaurant has, the bottom line is always about how good the food it. Well Big Mike's has got it going on. I am a huge fan of their cheesesteak sandwich. So much so, that I hardly tried anything else on their menu. Big Mike's cheesesteak sandwiches use only thinly sliced ribeye steaks, and everyone knows that the ribeye is definitely the most flavorful steak there is. They offer a 6", 12" & 18" sandwich; and the 12" is definitely more than enough to share unless you have a voracious appetite....which I do! My idea of the perfectly "dressed" sandwich is grilled onions, mushrooms, provolone cheese and a squirt of mayo. But hey, that's just me. Being a New Orleans native, this sandwich always brings back fond memories of New Orleans roast beef poor boys; as New Orleans is not a big philly cheesesteak haven. Conversely, Los Angeles is not a roast beef poor boy haven either. But I digress. As many times as I frequented Big Mike's I never ordered any other sandwich besides the cheesesteak sandwich, and I have no regrets, as the sandwich is perfect. There is almost too much meat, if that's even possible. Also worth mentioning are the garlic fries and the onion rings. I never had garlic fries before visiting Big Mike's and I instantly became a fan. Always crisp and never soggy, these fries are the "bomb-diggity". The onion rings are also a huge hit. This aint no BK onion rings. These are the real deal, hand sliced variety and they are scrumptious. The only other item I have sampled on the menu is the cheese steak plate from the low carb menu. Imagine the tastiest cheesesteak sandwich, but without all the carb laden bread. I'm not saying its the healthiest thing in town, but it IS low carb and it's hella tasty too. I could go on and on about Big Mike's but the best thing I can do is to simply implore that you go there and try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. read more

I noticed they prepped a sandwich that was just like what I ordered and put it in a to-go bag (I ordered my meal to-go)...and it sat there...and sat there longer. The staff then started calling numbers beyond my number and I'm like, hey, what happened to me. The lady seemed clueless, said it was coming and I asked again. I have to starts a new list called "can't go wrong lunch" and this would be one of the places on the list. I ordered the 6" Philly Cheese with sweet and spicy peppers a drink and garlic fries for under 8.00. The sandwich was very good although my coworker complained that it was a bit on the dry side. I will say that this is not a French dip it is a Philly cheese steak so I was more than OK with the texture of the sandwich. I might add that by the time you are a couple of bites into it, the juice from the meat will have soaked into the bun enough to make it taste soft and moist. Now as some of you might remember my disappointed on my last review vis a vis the size of the potato side from the Greek place, I had absolutely no complaints about Big Mike's. Italian beef in California?! Oh yes... My son and I were beach bouncing the day before Thanksgiving and he said he wanted a hot dog for lunch. Sounded fine and we wound up at this place near home. They have a small parking lot which was nice. I was planning on getting a cheat meal cheese steak sandwich when what to my wondering eyes should appear, but an Italian Beef and I began to leer. Every time I am craving a sandwich and in this area this is where I go. They have some great warm and cold sandwiches. I always seem to get either the meatball sandwich or the California sub. In addition my boyfriend orders their Cuban sandwich or their Philly sub. All are really really great options and can say never been disappointed. They do offer on their menu garlic fries, which are good, but thats if you dont mind the chunks of chopped garlic. They have parking on the street and share a little lot with the athletic club. I'm addicted Twice in one week, thats how I roll at Big Mike's. Ive heard of this place before and a co-worker told me about it too, so me and my other co-worker decided to try it out. The place is a small sandwich shop with a good amount of sandwiches to order from. I believe they are known best for their philly cheesesteak. My co-worker and I ended up ordering the Atlantic City Hoagie (foot long) and an order of beer battered onion rings and splitting it. The sandwich was big, full of fresh sliced meat and cheese and lettuce and tomatoes, we also put the hot peppers in it and it added the right amount of spice. The onion rings were so good, the batter wasnt heavy at all, very light and crispy! I could order this everyday! The price for our meal was about $15 but split was about $7. When you order your sandwich you can also add a drink and side and save a couple bucks instead of ordering everything a la carte. The actual sandwich shop is small and kind of nostalgic. The employees are super nice and easy going. There are even seats and chairs on the sidewalk to enjoy your food. Get there early to avoid the lunch time rush! read more

I had a carving for a cheesesteak. I grew up near Philly and have had tons of good and bad ones over the years. Mike's is somewhere in the middle... it's neither bad nor great... overall I'd just say "pretty good". They do offer "whiz" which is very good sign - I'll get that next time. I got a 12" hoagie with mushrooms with grilled onions, sweet peppers and American cheese plus drink for about $11. It's conveniently located on Main St in El Segundo and plenty of foot traffic comes by at noon on a Sunday. There's a small parking lot right next door which is super convenient. While the atmosphere and setting don't particularly matter to me, I will state that it's not the best - a bit dungy. All in all, I'd come back if I have another hankering. Parking was really easy-we found street parking right out front but I think there's a lot there too. It wasn't too crowded on a Saturday around 1pm and they made our sandwiches pretty quickly. Love Big Mike's in El Segundo. Usually pretty quick, unless it's right at the height of lunch time, then a little wait. Philly cheese steak with mushrooms and cheese is the way to go, takes about 5-7 minutes from order to ready. When I go with my girl, we get the Italian warm salad and a 6" sub, it's enough for us to share. LOTS of meat on the Italian salad, very tasty. Three tables outside, about 6 tables inside.
