I called a few other places but I am SO glad I stumbled upon this small moving company. The owner clearly takes great pride in his work. Let me tell you, these guys were THE BEST! Glenn (a longtime supervisor) and his crew were amazing. My furniture was NOT small and NOT light. I also had a jukebox in my basement that had to be carried up a flight of stairs as well as a bunch of heavy boxes that had to be taken down from a loft on a narrow staircase! They did it all with a smile. You will not find more friendly, cautious guys in this area. They treated all my items with great care. From now on I will ALWAYS recommend Big Mike to anybody in need of a mover. Plus, they did all that for one extremely reasonable no nonsense flat rate. We hired Big Mike to pack our moving trailer for a cross country move. The day started out on the wrong foot when the movers were late. When they arrived I asked why they didn't call me to let me know they were running late (the moving truck was only going to be at our house for a 5 hour window before it would be leaving for storage for 30 days.) they said the owner didn't give them my cell phone number. I informed the owner this was a typical Newport, RI house, narrow hall and stairways and several of our pieces would need to go over the balcony to the ground level -- the workers informed me that their boss "Big Mike" informed them to drag the estimated 2.5-3hour move to 5 hours that way they could make more money. Sounds like a wonderful guy... The movers did a decent job hustling, and we did have some heavy pieces that they maneuvered down to the truck without marking the walls, which was appreciated. However, about an hour in, one of the guys joked about being accused of stealing from one past client...he joked that it was VHS tapes, and why would he steal VHS tapes when everyone has a DVD player now...this made my boyfriend and I uneasy, as only a thief would joke about being accused of being a thief. Long story short -- at the end of the move, our iPad was gone from the house. The worker who joked about being accused of stealing had gone into our downstairs bathroom -- that had been closed to the movers because the dog and all of our stuff that was not moving in the truck across country was in there for safe keeping. After he used the bathroom (very very quickly) not only was our iPad missing, but also the charger the kindle (which is also white and looks like an apple charger to a non-kindle owner) were gone. They had up and vanished into thin air with only myself and the movers being in the house that day. After scouring the empty house, 6 suitcases and rental car we realized that they both had been stolen from our house right out from under me. When I called the owner he acted outraged at his workers and actually said he'd like to, "ring his neck" when talking about the worker in question. He promised to investigate, check the local pawn shops and get back to me at 6pm the next day. Well, he never got back to me, and I called to follow up with him twice before filing a police report and he still to this day 2 months later has never gotten back to me. He even went and blocked me from his facebook page even though I hadn't even posted a single thing to it--positive or negative. I wouldn't hire these guys to move one box anywhere, and certainly wouldn't let them into my house. When our moving truck arrived in California from Rhode Island, I also discovered that the "professional" movers Big Mike hires didn't wrap our mattress, boxspring, and sofa in the bags I purchased and handed to them. I found them on the floor of the moving truck in the packaging, and lucky for us all our furniture now has grease stains including the Tempurpedic. These guys suck. read more

Warning! Do not use Big Mike's Movers! I hired them for my move twice. The first time, they sent me two young boys, maybe early college age. The boys worked very slowly and I was consequently charged more money because they were slow. For my second move, they never showed up! When I rescheduled, they sent three men and a truck that was entirely too small. The men loaded the truck and delivered the first load to my apartment. The second load did not entirely arrive! I am missing apparel, cookware, keepsakes.... things that my Grandparents left me and items my children had made. These things are irreplaceable! Really wanted to like this company. Owner appears to be overwhelmed and is unable to return phone calls once he has secured your business. He sent two movers with a tiny truck. They quickly realized it was too small and said they'd be back in 20 minutes. They never returned. My phone calls and messages to the owner were never returned. As I only took the one day off work, I had to scramble to hire another company at the last minute. I'm sure if you have a small job this company would be fine, but caveat emptor. read more

I should mention that this was my first experience hiring movers, so I have little to compare it to. But WOW, did these guys make our move a million times easier. We were able to get Big Mike's company with little advance notice, at a busy time of year, when most UHauls were already rented out. Mike confirmed the time beforehand, and the crew of two arrived right on time. These guys on the crew were super courteous, polite, and professional. They were not rushing around, and were extra careful around corners and doors. We paid per the truckload. They were accommodating, even though our move was a bit complex (went to two locations). They offered to go above and beyond, and even assembled my bed for me at the destination location! They were very good at packing, and used plenty of blankets when necessary. No grumbling at all when they saw the narrow staircase in one of the destinations. Very upbeat and friendly! They were able to fit way more in the truck than we were expecting. In one case, they moved a washer and dryer from a very unpleasant basement location, up difficult and rickety stairs, to my office. In another case, they moved myself and one other person from one apartment in Providence to two separate locations in RI. I had a great experience with Mike and his moving company last month. I needed 3 large items moved from a townhouse to a 2nd floor apt built in the 1920s and the price they quoted me was better than any place I called. It was a bit hard to get a hold of them because the voicemail was full at the time...your best bet is speaking to them in person, agreeing on a quote and setting a time to move in the same phone conversation. My messages in their voicemail before I reached them in person were not returned, but that may have been the volume of messages they had! They did call before the move to confirm they were arriving shortly. 2 movers came and had a positive attitude the entire time. I would definitely hire them again! read more

Mike moved me into my apartment last year. I just moved again and wanted to use him since he was great with my first move. We spoke on the phone and scheduled a date weeks before my move. I texted him 3 days before the move to confirm. He said everything was all set. The night before my move I texted to confirm the time he would show up the next morning- no response. At 8 in the morning of my move date I texted him again....no response. I called, and at first my calls were ringing and then going to VM....after about the 3rd call it was just ringing once and being forward to VM. Tried off my friends phone with the same result...worked at first then just ringing once and being forward. He blocked our numbers. I was left with my landlord expecting me out of that apartment that day, every single possession of mine packed- except for the clothes I was wearing. I understand things happen....but he could have sent a message telling me the date wasn't going to work....SOMETHING...ANYTHING! We hired "Big" Mike and one of his guys. They were great. They were in for a big job as we were moving stuff out of our parents house to get rid of things and make room so our parents could have a easier time moving. Mike and his guy were friendly, helpful and even after loading the truck up they stayed and hauled out bags and boxes of things. They were early to show up and we even had them come back as they loaded things in their truck so quickly. That truck was full. This was my first time hiring movers and I was absolutely thrilled with how well everything went. The movers arrived a few minutes early, introduced themselves, were kind and courteous every step of the way. They moved our one bedroom apartment with lots of heavy furniture in less than 2.5 hours, which included perhaps most impressively hauling two large sofas onto the third story balcony. They were incredibly careful with everything and put boxes in the rooms where they needed to go. The price was also the cheapest I could find and a flat rate so I knew exactly what I was spending.
