Updating the review: Espresso is still nice, but the service has gotten really bad. I've worked in the coffee industry for 7+ years, and as a former barista, the customer service has gotten terrible. My husband has gone in a couple times when we go out and he has been straight up ignored, and then when he is at the drive thru I have witnessed snarky attitudes. Our orders are always the same and they're always simple, and yet it's a 50/50 chance they'll do the drink wrong. The owners should really consider doing some customer service training or managing their baristas better. read more

I am a big fan of this local coffee shop right off TV highway. Every time I visit this shop the baristas are always very welcoming and warm in how they interact with each customer they encounter. The shop itself offers plentiful seating with chairs and tables on the first and second floor of the building. They also offer free Wifi and cozy seating with a fireplace making it the perfect spot to sit in and get some work done if that's your vibe. Big River has a wide variety of sandwiches, pastries, and drinks to choose from and, for now, the pastries are sold at a cheaper price after 3pm. The coffee itself is tasty and the staff are always willing to customize my drinks and are very patient with me. Overall, I would highly recommend this coffee shop if you are looking for a spot to sit and get some work done or if you just want to try something new. read more

The first time I came into Big River Coffee, it wasn't a great experience. There weren't any vegan baked goods, they have a vegan breakfast sandwich with impossible sausage. The day that I came in last summer was during a heat wave and they weren't doing any cooking. Decided to give them another chance, so glad I did! The coffee shop is close to home. There are comfy chairs, which I look for in a coffee spot. I love to read while savoring a beverage and snack. I guess they usually have other vegan baked goods, but today they were out, but had a brownie. Brownies are one of my least favorite baked goods, but hey, beggers can't be choosy! I enjoyed spending an afternoon reading my novel along with a Chai Tea with oat milk. They have a couple other dairy alternatives. I also had the aforementioned brownie. The atmosphere is nice and pleasant with artwork adorning the walls. It's spacious and there's an upstairs that I can see people sitting upstairs from where I sit. I did not venture upstairs because I found the perfect spot to sit and read and watch the comings and goings of other patrons! read more

I finally tried Big River. Located near two Starbucks and a chick fil a, they are a hopeful little shop that opened last year. As someone who has had a dedicated, lifelong love affair with coffee, I also tend to be picky and like consistency. Most of the small coffee shops have crap coffee offerings. Hence why it took me a year to give them a try. But, an extra hot medium latte with half vanilla and 4 shots of espresso, and I am a new repeat customer. They were friendly, unpretentious, and the coffee? I snarfed every sip while gathering groceries, and even reported to my husband after arriving home that it's my new local place for coffee. Side note: they offer affogato!!! I'll have to check that out next time. If you manage to be by there and like hot coffee like I do, give them a try. Beats big chain offers hands down. read more

If you like dark bitter coffee, this place is your jam. Me on the other hand? I clearly have a sensitive palate that comes alive by the tender balance of slightly bitter, sweet, and complex richness of a vanilla latte and white chocolate mocha. Sadly, this was one of the worst lattes and white mochas I've had. Had I been in the cafe I would have asked them to modify it but we went through the drive through as we were heading out for the day. Driving while improperly caffeinated can be a real hazard. We ( me and my 21 yr old) were so excited to have a new coffee place with a drive thru on our reg route that was not Starbucks, Black Rock, Human Bean, or Dutch Bros. With some different food items including gelato, which we adore, natch. We like variety. The building looks fancy! Honestly, our experience was not that great. We used the drive through and she was nice. Kids hot chocolate was not very hot and not anything amazing. My iced vanilla latte was not remotely vanilla-y (I wish I had read Stephanie's review first) and they did not have soy milk. Reg milk is tough on me and I cannot do almond, coconut, or oat. It is nice they offer those though, I guess. Kid's lemon gelato tasted lemony but it was slimy and oddly stringy...with ice crystals. My salted caramel gelato did taste ok but was also texturally off. Just not very good. My credit card didnt work in their reader at all. Embarassingly, cars lined up behind us while we tried a few times. Nope. It worked the very next place we went so it was not me. I don't know if we would go back. Maybe we will give them a little time to work on things. The worst part? We ditched my drink and kid's gelato and went straight to Black Rock. Oh well. read more

We visited this coffee shop primarily to play board games, and it was a fantastic spot for that! The ambience was cozy and relaxing, with the pleasant background sounds of coffee being made. The upstairs seating area was a highlight. I loved that the tables were surrounded by windows on all sides. We didn't try the food, but the tea was decent. I've had bad coffee. Maybe it had too much milk, or it was too sugary. Coffee like that is something I can handle. Now drinking burnt bean coffee was a new experience for me. The Irish cream latte tasted like the ashes of an Irish village invaded by the British. I hope for the future they decide to not burn the beans for a coffee that costs $8. read more

There is no water station in a 2 story facility. When I asked two different baristas if there was a water station, the first one just said "hold on". So I did. With nothing. But she didn't even answer my question. Meanwhile my child is choking on the very dry bagel served up. I asked another barista if I could have a water, she said I can get you one? If there is no water station, and I can't go behind the counter, that only leaves one of us to fetch the water. Unclear why is was a question. Aside from that, for a 3" hand pie, a bagel, hot chocolate, and a coffee it cost $33. This was my first impression of this small business that seems annoyed by customers needing...service. This is a GREAT spot to either meet with friends, bring a laptop and get some work done or get cozy on one of the stuffed chairs to read a book. I sat upstairs to work alongside a friend, but there was a fireplace downstairs that I really wanted to sit by cuddled up with a book! We decided to try this coffee shop today since we watched it being built. The building from the outside it nice and looks modern. Drive thru is easily accessible. A girl walked out and took our order and she was nice. We got 2 coffee drinks, I got mine extra sweet because you never know. Even with extra sweet this coffee was not drinkable for me. All I tasted was dark dark espresso and it was bitter. I ended up dumping it when I got home. I won't be back here. I'm sure this place will be great for others, but it's not for me. read more

We have been excited to try this place since seeing the construction on this new coffee shop over the past few months. For a brand new building the ambiance has a lot to be desired from being too loud, poor sound quality where the speakers are on the first floor and don't travel well to the upstairs area, too bright lighting, and overall fake and inauthentic feeling of the place. I wouldn't recommend studying or ever doing work here. Now let's discuss the most important part, the coffee. The coffee here is VERY dark - To the point where we are convinced it is burned, even though the friendly barista told us it was not and even let us tried their pure espresso shots, which we still are convinced it's burnt. Nonetheless, The barista remade our drink with their lighter blend of coffee, which still tastes burnt, with a bad aftertaste and burnt sticky residue left in our mouth. Service and people are awesome here however, so nice and friendly to the point where you're wanting to like the coffee, but you can't lie to yourself. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you love the taste of super dark/burnt coffee. Long-bottom will probably forever be the king of coffee in Hillsboro/Aloha area, which is probably what you're looking for. read more

Finally open close to home!! I've been watching the building process for a while now and excited to have another option close. Very cozy inside especially on this rainy day. Fireplace makes it very welcoming as well as the nice friendly greeting I received when I walked in. It's not a huge coffee shop downstairs but does have an upstairs seating area as well. Standard drinks and not inflated prices make this a good choice. Coffee drinks are smooth and not overwhelmingly strong, the flavors were so faint I had to have my son taste my white chocolate mocha frappe to make sure it wasn't me. In turn I tasted his Hazelnut frappe and the flavoring was very faint as well! There were no ice chunks so it was blended very well just lacked flavor!! I ordered a Lotus energy drink to try as well and it was flavored nicely. They only serve iced so no blended energy drinks here. They have some baked goods and a micro breakfast menu. Been here several times already, both through the drive thru and as a walk-in. Every visit, the staff has been very courteous and friendly. My usual order is a Vanilla Latte with oat milk and I prefer my coffee strong which was made exactly how I like it. I've also had their bagels and pastries and they were good, but have yet to try their avocado toast. The habanero bacon jam bagel sandwich was a little on the sweet side, so for me it was ok. I prefer the sausage, egg, and cheddar with lemon pepper aioli, it was very tasty. Also if you are a regular customer, they do have a reward program where you can earn free drinks which is nice! read more

Good service and friendly staff. The coffee is very good. The espresso roast is a dark roast but it is not burned as some think is the issue. It's a dark roast. Deliciously dark. A great example of burned over roasted coffee would be the national chain that I like to refer to as "Charbucks." Side note, over roasting the beans to the point of charring makes for consistent charred flavor with lower quality beans. Hence the Homogeny of "Charbucks." At least it's consistent. If you don't like dark coffee, just use your words and ask the staff for a lighter option. The coffee house has food and gelato and tea as well, but I only tried the coffee. I will definitely be back. This place is on par with Stumptown and Insomnia coffee. read more

This is new in town and I was very excited to try it. Walking in you can tell they are trying to make this place more home-like. In talking to the barista's it's a mom and pop shop. They appreciate recommendations and my partner and I had a great conversation with the barista. For a coffee shop it was very bright and the music was quite loud. It was more pop like music instead of study music. I am not sure if dark roast is for me as the barista allowed us to try the espresso blends. If you like dark coffee this might be the place to try but I am just not a fan of the taste of this coffee. read more

For a place that has coffee in their name it was not a coffee shop. My friends and I went for the convenience of the drive-thru but were thoroughly disappointed with the coffee. It tasted like they tried to mask the burnt taste with sweetener. We got three ice vanilla lattes and one dirty chai and they were all burnt. We did not bother to finish any of the drinks. I cannot recommend this place for coffee and will not be returning. read more
