What is there to say? If you like soup, this is a place for you! They have a variety of soup that they rotate every single day as well as specials and meal deals. You can have breakfast anytime of the day which is a huge plus for a lot of people. I'm a huge fan of spaghetti so that's what I like to have when I go there. But again it's a diner so you can pretty much get anything you want. I've had several different meals here and everything I've ever had has been wonderful. Just the other day I had their stuffed peppers. It comes with two ginormous green peppers stuffed, and a side of mashed potatoes and the bowl of soup; for 14 bucks. You can't go wrong. It was a cold, blustery day, so I decided I needed a nice hot lunch and chose the Big Skillet restaurant. I was not disappointed. It's a nice, clean restaurant with great employees and great service. (Even the restroom was clean) After perusing their menu I decided upon a comfort classic: the patty melt. It comes with french fries and a soup or salad. As it was cold day, I chose the soup. It was a wonderful cream of potato soup. Thick and rich and really hit the spot! Their soups change daily and have lots of choices in their rotation. The patty melt on marbled rye was a generous size and satisfied me in every way. I had some strong black coffee to accompany the meal. I left feeling full and satisfied. When you first walk in it looks like a nice clean diner with wood floors, booths, and tables. There are several daily specials that you will surely love! The soups today were chicken noodle & navy bean... They were both delicious. My husband ordered the Royal Skillet Burger, it came with a bowl of (chicken noodle) soup, a mini coleslaw, large portion of crispy fries, and a pickle spear I ordered the BLT & E (egg) it was so delicious! It came with a bowl of (navy bean) soup and all of the same sides as my husband's meal. The food was hot and fresh! Our waitress was very attentive and kept my husband's drink full. If you are looking for comfort foods, this is a good place. I have been here twice, and have good foods both times. The portion is generous and the staffs are friendly. Here's what I had: Biscuit and gravy (the farm house) - The biscuit was a bit dense for my preference, but the gravy was good. I'll consider to order a side a gravy for the sausage patty. I'm editing my review to 5 stars. My Husband, my Mom, and I would frequent the Big Skillet once or twice a week. It's been 10 years since then and my Husband and Mom have both passed away. I no longer drive, and from time to time I'll order delivery. I happened to see Big Skilled on Grubhub and remembering how I enjoyed eating there, I caved, stifled my 10 year old grudge, and ordered The Breaded Pork Tenderloin dinner, knowing Grubhub would refund my money if I had a problem. Luckily, it was one of the two days a week when they serve their Cream of Chicken Rice soup. I enjoy the soup in the past, even though it had very little chicken, or rice. The large container of soup came with crackers and a fresh baked roll. I always ask for extra lemon, so I gave it a squeeze and dug in. The soup was better than I remember, something was different, it was actually full of diced white meat chicken and rice, and with a roll, it was a meal in itself. The Pork Tenderloin with two large pieces (larger than in the past) of Breaded Pork Tenderloin, along with a generous portion of mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables was enough for two meals. The food was definitely a step up from what I remembered. Prompting me to google a possible change in ownership. Voila! Big Skillet changed ownership in April 2017. The food was good at breakfast - nice sized omelet (try the California!) with side of potatoes or fruit. There was an up charge for Greek toast and for an English muffin that we were not warned about. Wouldn't have changed my order but still, would be good to tell people it will cost $0.50 more. I enjoyed the service and fresh prepared meals. Breakfast Big Skillet or Biscuits and gravy or chicken fried steak with eggs are what I ponder over for breakfast. I do lean toward the skillet. Dinner I like Farmers Pork Chops or Pork Tenderloin. There fried chicken is very good to. I must eat there a lot because I notice my choice list is growing. Service was bad, eggs over cooked, rude owner, and to top that off they don't know how to ring up a check properly. When she dropped off my skillet, didn't say a word and walked away. The eggs were over cooked and dry, I would have liked some hot sauce but never had a chance to ask for some. She dropped my check once I was done and somehow charged me $50+ for a single meal. Then I waited about 10-15 minutes at the register to pay while observing the owner being rude to people and cussing under his breath. He fixed my check as he complained about the server. The food is always consistent from place to place, they always keep my coffee cup filled, they have display cases right at the front so you know what sweet desserts to save room for, and in general it's just a comfortable dining environment. The Big Skillet is no exception to this. I was meeting a friend for breakfast I hadn't seen for a while. I knew we were going to be chatting, eating and drinking lots of coffee so I picked this place. And although we commandeered her table for a long while, Kimberly just kept coming back with a smile on her face to make sure our coffee cups didn't go empty. I didn't have any special breakfast like I usually do because I'm still stuffed from overeating during the holidays, so I just had eggs, sausages, and fruit. And everything was good. Another suburban Chicago breakfast, this one in the town of Elgin, far west of the city straddling the Fox River. The 8th largest city in Illinois, it was founded as a dairy center (there was a Borden factory) and home to the Elgin Watch Company, maker of timepieces big and small. It was the largest manufacturer of fine watches in the US for many decades. The town boasts some incredible Victorian homes. I was just looking for eggs, and the Big Skillet is a typical Chicago style "coffee shop," meaning a very long menu covering all meals of the day, and an extensive bakery selection. I've kind of always eschewed "skillets" for breakfast, no particular reason, I mean it's the same food, just piled up instead of spread out. But I'll always go for a breakfast plate that gives you all three meats, and the "Butcher Skillet" did just that. A mound of hash browns, smothered in melted cheese, with ham, bacon, and sausage, topped with three eggs. Side of toast? Yes please, with an ample set of bread choices, I went for rye. As with most area 'coffee shops', an ample dish of butter or butter like substance graces the table. The massive dish in front of me, I didn't make much of a dent. Came here with my girlfriend over the weekend, I had the Irish Skillet, and let me tell you..when they call themselves "Big Skillet", they really mean it! I'm a big eater, and even I ended up taking some home, my girlfriend had the chicken salad & avocado which also looked delicious. The inside is moden/cozy, clean, and there is plenty of parking.
