I have been shopping at the Big Y in Holden for decades. Today was my last day due to another horrible experience around the bottle room. The store seems to empty the bottle room primarily upon customer request which is really inconvenient when you show up with 6 trash bags of bottles and cans, which were purchased at the same store. But the unapologetic attitude I got from customer service and then the store manager sealed the deal. I've dumped Facebook, Amazon, Twitter and Instagram. Big Y is now on my list. I recently stopped by this location while in the area to visit some friends, and shopped here for seafood to grill for a cookout. The young women who was working at the seafood department was so helpful and pleasant, Annabelle. I had a lot of questions, as I rarely grill my seafood, I usually cook it at home in my oven or crockpot. She was very patient and informative. She helped me select the perfect seafood items for grilling, and doing a seafood boil. She even went as far as to suggest vegetables that would be a good complement with each item. I really appreciated her commitment to customer service. I'm so glad I ended up being there during her shift. That location is lucky to have her. Before 5pm today, I was at Holden Big Y and I asked the cashier if you paid more than $25 for a $25 Visa Gift Card .She said she thought so but did not know how much. Then another employee named Patty came over she wanted me to give my ID for 3 $25 visa gift cards. I had only my Chase card with me. I left my glasses and my pocketbook in my car. There were other people in my line waiting so I did not take the gift cards. I use a cane and take more time than most to get to my car and back again to the store . I asked a few people about needing my ID they wondered if rules had changed. I called another Big Y and was told an ID was not needed for this amount. Today is 11/24/2023. read more

As part of my ongoing quest to find certain items in the covid era I went to this supermarket. It was clean, with someone assigned to clean all carts so you don't have to when you arrive. The store did not honor prices in their flyer. Little Leaf lettuce was supposed to be $1.99 but they charged $3.49. Grated cheese was advertised at $2.00 but was actually $2.99. For other items you need to give up your personal information to get a discount. I talked staff into giving it to me anyway. Many items were out of stock and prices were generally high. I am only giving two stars instead of one because of the staff. The dishonest pricing is awful and I will not return. Update - regarding your question on the card, some items had two prices, one with the card and one without, but I did not see this with the lettuce or cheese. read more

We used to love Big Y for the atmosphere and selection. We visited this location and were disappointed by the lack of fresh produce and the overall quality of the products. This store does not seem to align experience with the premium they charge shoppers. We were charged for cheap and thin paper bags, no handles. They had no option for bagging bottles beyond bring your own reusable bag. At least offer a decent paper bag as an option. No bagger at checkout. We "shared" that task with the cashier. The good news, plenty of plastic bags and straws available for purchase at Big Y! read more

When it comes to grocery stores I wish I could both have a Whole Foods next and that I had the salary to support that kind of spending. I've always had love for Big Y. The Seafood you get here is the best you will find at any chain grocer. Another savings tip - if you spend so much money on Gladware or other "throw away" tupperware this needs to be a next stop for you. Big Y actually has their own store brand of this tupperware and its just as good, doesn't warp in the dishwasher and they are actually stain resistant. The huge containers are only $4 for a set! They also usually have buy 2 get 1 or some great deal like that all the time. They often do have BOGO or Buy one get 2 or buy 3 get 2 .. you get the idea... but all over the store! Gets very busy on Saturday mornings and of course before snow storms. I still don't quite understand the coin system much but I know when I do use them on applicable items I end up with a tiny biill. If you aren't going to sign up for the store card ($5 annually I beleive) then don't bother shopping at Big Y unless you love to pay more for groceries. Every time they scan my card my bill goes down at least $20. Quality of the produce, meat, and seafood is the best for any chain. The variety can be a little reserved on regular grocery items but I've found that the store brand of what they have is just as good if not better than name brand. I especially like this location because its in a plaza and I can maximize shopping days by visiting any other places I need to while I grocery shop. The store made pizza is better than most local shops!! Recommendation: Shop hungry. Get there, order a pizza from the pizza counter, do your gluttonous shopping, go get the pizza, enjoy a slice in the cafe area across from produce, grab a bottle of wine in the adjacent section, and head on home to finish that bad boy of a pizza....maybe your should order 2 if you have hungry fam waiting at home. read more

A clean, well organized supermarket with good prices and a big selection. But what sets it apart is all the great people who work there. Every time I go in there, I leave in a better mood than when I came in. Reis at the fish counter is always helpful when I'm picking out salmon for the boys. Jada at the service desk knows where everything in the store is without fail! Sylvia and Natalie the cashiers are always friendly and great with all the charity donations and special offers at the check-out . Haley and Tom, the managers at the front end, are really fast and helpful getting folks thru the line. The whole place is just full of cool people who make the usually boring experience if grocery shopping a little more enjoyable. Thanks Big Y! Five stars! read more

The Big Y is WAY overpriced!! So expensive!! The only reason they are in business is because there are 2 elderly complexes within less then 2.5 miles!! Service is ok, selection is ok. Their bakery is absolutely amazing!! It's worth the extra money. Their cakes, and pies, and desserts are fantastic! Again expensive, but for a every once and a while type of thing I am willing to pay the extra money. This morning, at the Holden Big Y, one of the store employees - the woman who manages the cues for the cashiers - was rude toward the customers standing patiently in line. My attempt to politely approach her to clarify whether or not I was next was met with yelling. It was inappropriate and humiliating. Other than this one person, the store's selection, appearance and other staff are just fine. I witnessed other customers being yelled at. I'd rather not shop at Big Y again. read more

This store is so ridiculously overpriced that I am surprised anyone shops there. It is the only store charging for bags in the area. Disguised as some environmental benefit it also gorges the last penny out of customers. Try Market 32 for better prices and all the bags you need for free. read more

I love their fish and chips and their weekly deals in the flyer. I've always supported them as they are a locally, family owned company. Their pizza is also amazing. Quality of perishables is great and their staff is helpful and courteous. I wish I had one in the Gardner, MA area. It's worth the thirty minute drive though. read more

The staff are rude and I am treated like I am a bother. In a highly competitive industry Big Y needs to lose the coins and now they want people to pay for extra silver savings. I only go here because it is the only supermarket nearby and only if I have to. The promotion system for sales makes no sense. read more

Sunday Night at 5:30 pm, most all the managers I'm sure were home. I searched the standard offered roasts on the shelf and none fit my needs. When I ventured over to the meat case one young man was washing the floor. He quickly responded to me and inquired how could he help? I wanted a larger eye of the round not offered, he responded I'm not a meat cutter but let me see if I can help! He found one out back trimmed it up and sent me on my way with a smile . Expensive , like all BigY's, but huge and clean . Biggest problem we have had is that the baggers constantly forget to put items into our cart after we pay for them . You have to watch carefully , as they are usually talking amongst themselves and not paying attention to customer or customer's items . read more

I ordered a pink man and woman's corsages for a bridal shower. Picked them up and they were RED. The woman's also contained ONE rose even though the brochure shows them in two and three. Another customer didn't believe what I payed for them and what I got. She actually went to the store manager and told her that there were two pink roses in the bunches that they sell and that they should be exchanged. Manager said, "No way, we can't break up the bunched ones.) Thanks Big Y for putting a damper on what should be a joyous occasion. read more

frustrating. most items are overpriced, sometimes wildly. as an example, I noticed a competitor's organic bananas were almost 20 percent cheaper than Big Y's regular bananas. They sometimes run out of items for days or weeks at a time. The employees are frequently unresponsive -- standing in the way of customers or talking past customers to coworkers. They gave up on plastic bags -- only to offer very low-quality paper bags for 10 cents each. They gave up on paper towels in the restrooms, where you have to wash your hands in ice-cold water. Whole departments shut down two or more hours before the store is scheduled to close. This market is only a mile from my home, but I'll be driving 4 to 5 miles to Market 32 or Stop n Shop instead from now on. read more

Holden Big Y is clean. I didn't like that the meat manager said he wouldn't grind pork for me. I asked the store manager and he told me it would be too expensive to purchase a grinder just for pork. Really??? I told him I didn't have trouble at other markets and he told me in a superior way that he didn't know what "other" places did but it was the law! I know beef and pork has to be kept separate but too expensive to have a small grinder??? Come on. I didn't like the attitude. read more

Great sales if what you need is included. Otherwise, I'm not sure how anyone can shop here regularly, prices are ridiculously high. Also, takes forever to check out, they let the lines get really long before they open another lane. Usually one express lane and one regular lane is open weekdays when I go with my two small kids which results in at least one freak out waiting in line. Thankfully I only go here if I need one just one thing that happens to be on sale. read more
