I was really excited to try Biggie's because I have been looking for a casual raw bar in the area- unfortunately, after my one visit, I'm going to have to keep looking.
We initially arrived around 7 on a saturday. The parking lot (shared with DD and Quiznos) was packed, so we left and were going to go to another restaurant; however, after some creative navigating (read: we got lost), we ended up by Biggies a little while later and spots had opened up, so we went in. We were quoted a 25-30 min wait, but were seated a lot faster. So far, so good. That's about where it ends!
Biggies is having a summer martini special ($5), so I ordered a Lychee martini. It did not taste much like lychee; it was pretty much just a weak fruity drink served in a hybrid champagne/martini glass and garnished with a maraschino cherry. Maybe I was just disappointed because I was hoping it would taste like the lychee martini at Bistro 55? I also ordered a mango martini, which was a little better, but still very, VERY sweet and super weak.
For apps, we ordered a house salad and the seafood bisque. The house salad was standard. The bisque came with lots of seafood (scallops, tilapia and mini shrimp), but the broth was really pretty flavorless and a little thin. I LOVE bisque and chowder, but to down this, I had to douse it with pepper and oyster crackers. :(
For entrees, we ordered a dozen oysters and a full rack of ribs, with corn on the cob on the side.
First, the oysters- this is why I came here, and for $1.75 each, I was expecting them to be good. What I got was a dozen oysters, served on a PLATE, no ice, some oysters were piled on top of the others, the liquid was barely (if at all) preserved, and quite a few of them had shell pieces in them!! WTF? They were served with horseradish and cocktail sauce. I was very, very disappointed in the whole presentation. I mean, if they want to charge that much per oyster, the presentation better match up to other local places that charge that amount or even less!
The ribs weren't much better. Most were not fall off the bone, and they were pretty skimpy with the sauce (although when we did carry out some of them, we asked the waitress for extra sauce and it was pretty tasty- they should use more!). I could have gotten a similar meal at any random chain restaurant. Lastly, they messed up the corn on the cob- instead of it being juicy, it was dry and mealy. How do you mess up corn on the cob in the middle of the summer????
The meal was so disappointing, we didn't bother with getting dessert there.
The one good thing about this place was that our waitress was nice and friendly for the most part, although she disappeared during the entire entree part, and I really needed either a refill or some water or something. But when she was around, she was friendly and efficient.
So, overall, this place is way overpriced for what it's offering. They either need to increase the quality, or lower the prices. I was pretty let down, because I love oysters and have been looking for a quality place for them for a while, and sadly, this place was not it! read more
