Last night my husband was hungry so we decided to give Big's Chicken a try! I'm glad we did. I just ordered a couple of sides/starters because I wasn't very hungry. I got the small mashed potatoes with Creole gravy. I'd give that 4 stars, as I needed to add a little salt to mine (but that's better than it coming too salty!) I know I ordered a small, but it was still a bit smaller than I expected. On the other hand, I also got the (5) Fried Mac & Cheese bites, and they were so big and filling, it made up for smaller potatoes. BUT the ranch dressing was... I hate to say it, but awful. It was so...I'm not positive... but vinegary? Just smelling it made my eyes water. I thought maybe they accidentally gave me tartar sauce or something?! And the Fresno sauce was too spicy for me - but I'm a spice wimp so don't let that scare you too much. The good news is that the mac and cheese bites were so tasty I hardly missed having the ranch. My hubby ordered the grilled chicken thighs and I stole a bite. OH MY GOD. It was probably THE BEST grilled chicken I've ever tasted. I don;t think my hubby was quite as enthusiastic as I was about the chicken, but I know he liked it a lot. It was cooked perfectly, juicy and tender, and soooo flavorful. He also got jojo potatoes and a side of (5) Fried Mac & Cheese bites, and enjoyed all of it. We're both looking forward to eating Big's Chicken again, and definitely recommend it. read more

My girlfriend and I had a really frustrating experience here, and what it comes down to is laziness and a lack of consideration. Long story short, for those of you with soy allergies, this is not the place for you. The first thing we said when we got to the counter is that one of us has a soy allergy, and we proceeded to ask if certain things we were interested in on the menu contained soy. The guy at the counter obviously had no idea that common ingredients (like commercial mayonnaise and cheap bread) are almost always soybean oil-based...but rather than take the time to double check, he totally blew us off and basically responded with "I don't think so." My partner ordered as best as she could, and she still ended up not being able to eat what she ordered. The guy waited until after we had paid and sat down to double check with the kitchen- and sure enough, almost every ingredient in the dish my girlfriend ordered contained soy. Had he taken the time to check before we had paid for our food, she could have ordered something completely different- or we could have saved everyone some time and gone somewhere else. What kills me is that they have a sheet at the counter noting common allergens on their menu for staff to communicate to patrons- gluten, dairy, alliums, vegetarian/vegan (not allergies), but soy was not a consideration, even though it pops up in almost everything. I work in food service, and as a customer service professional it is unacceptable to put someone in that position. Everyone rolls their eyes at allergy modifications but it's something to take seriously. It's one thing that they didn't know where soy existed on the menu, but that they didn't take the time to double check when we were ordering is pretty ridiculous. It's poor customer service, and it definitely doesn't make me want to go back anytime soon. read more

Latest version of Big's in NE Portland. Better interior than the previous version pre-fire. Much better for the neighborhood than the Hutch. Very good chicken here. I wouldn't call the white barbecue sauce authentic, though. North Alabama white sauce is much more vinegary and peppery- the stuff we had was more like slightly spiced mayo. The chicken is as good as previous, tons of smoked paprika flavor in the rub. The Fresno chile sauce is mild, so no need to skimp. The best deal is the the big family meal at happy hour. The slaw and jojos were very good, but the wings were a let down. Nothing too special, just some fried wings with some seasoning dashed on top. Not a wisp of smoke detected. Maybe the dry rub had some smoked paprika, but the meat itself tasted like unseasoned chicken. I've been a regular of Big's Chicken for a while now, def my go-to chicken place at this point. The loaded Jojos (The Dirty on their menu) is one of my absolute favorite semi-guilty pleasure foods in Portland, the creole gravy here is genuinely insane. Pretty much any of their grilled chicken options are great as well, I love the jerk chicken sandwich more than life itself. I haven't delved into their more fried offerings, but I can't imagine they're half bad either. read more

No sides, just the chicken, and it filled me well. Don't care for the white gold sauce; the fresno sauce is not too hot, flavorful but a little thin. The service here is great. Kim and dan were really nice! The food at happy hour is well worth the price! This place has one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've had. The mac and cheese ball things and jojo's were also really good. I'm not a fan of secret special sauces, but I was pleasantly surprised with the sauces that came on the sandwich and the little dirty (jojo's with pieces of smoked chicken, onion, and cheese). Great safety measures in place, limiting customers inside & requiring masks. Staff was taking all precautions when I was there. Spicy-side crisp fried chicken is what we want every time; it's always a great deal to get the chicken dinner with salad & two sides. (I always order the grilled thighs and a side of gravy for another meal which we toss with pasta). Jojos are perfect and the variety of sauces included are a nice touch. Cole slaw is fresh & snappy not too creamy. Locally owned, order by calling directly so third party apps don't skim the profits. Tip generously.
