Sauces on side. Lil tartar dressing and some hot sauce,yes Sir. Slaw on the sammie and I got a side of slaw. Fries available. This wasn't coleslaw. It was soul slaw,its like coleslaw,but it has flavo rto it,ya heard? They got ribs,catfish,brisket on Fridays only. Chicken,pulled pork as well. All of those available as plates or sandwiches. And don't even get me started on what they call coleslaw... some lettuce served out of a bag with a weird, clear sauce that you pour over the lettuce!?!? It's called Reo's Ribs because they are really good at making ribs. The meat was so tender and seasoned perfectly and there was a generous amount of meat on the bone. The sauce is making my mouth water just thinking about it. Five stars for the ribs. Excellent. I was a little surprised at the price as I ordered at the register, but I did get two pretty generous sides with it. And I was happy I got to sit inside to eat it in their small casual seating area. Get the skillet corn. Expertly cooked (not mushy) and the flavor was *chef's kiss* I'm considering getting a big side of it to Thanksgiving dinner. I am a bit of a macaroni and cheese connoisseur. I have organized tastings and repeatedly announced that it is my favorite meal, deserted island meal, last prison meal... I'm still processing my thoughts on the mac and cheese here. My work brought Reo's for lunch last week. We had the chicken, brisket, yams, and greens. I kind of had hoped they'd get the mac and cheese but its okay. It was on time and I appreciate that with catering. The food came in pretty standard aluminum trays but everything was good. The meat was good and the chicken was actually my favorite which was surprising to me, the collard greens were a little extra salty, and the yams were sweet. Honestly I liked all of it, I overate and spent the next hour absolutely useless at work (if my boss reads this please know I worked very hard anyway). Everyone on the team seemed happy and enjoyed the food and it was big portions so we never ran out. We also got the cornbread which I had to literally wait and go get as a second once I cleared some room on my plate. The cornbread was a tad bit dense for my liking but overall very good. I wanted this place to be amazing and maybe that is why the food was not amazing. I ordered a brisket meal with red beans and rice, and collard greens. I tried the red beans and rice first and was so shocked. The beans taste like a can of chili and I am not happy. The greens tasted alright but they have a very odd flavor. I love greens and make them at least 1 time a month ( it's just me so they last). The brisket is good but tougher than most brisket. I don't eat out much anymore but sometimes I splurge. The smoke pouring out of the giant smoker out front is intoxicating, even if you are driving by in a car. Having lived in the neighborhood for many years, I've been to Reo's a few times. When the ribs are moist and juicy, they are some of the best in Portland. But when they are over cooked and dry, they are like leather. It's this inconsistency that saddens me and makes me hesitant to go back. During these Covid times, I understand that restaurants have difficulty gauging demand and that could impact the quality. But customers who are supporting businesses, have to decide where to spend their limited funds. I feel especially bad for Reo's after having experienced a fire that destroyed their business, only to rebuild then be hit with the pandemic and the senseless violence and destruction in Portland. Their once beautiful building is now covered in graffiti and is surrounded by a fence in an attempt to protect the business and allow them to continue cooking for customers. I'll give them another chance, but when I have time to go in person and make sure my beef ribs are fresh off the smoker. read more

Visited Reo's again this weekend, my first time since their most recent re-opening. I love how they remodeled and also acquired the next door space for some seating. It's technically all takeout, but you can take your meal to the seating and enjoy it immediately. They were also super friendly. EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD OMG I got the 5-meat sampler, which comes with 3 sides. These are very generous portions! I got brisket, catfish, chicken, and 2 kinds of pork ribs (babyback were my favorite), plus fried okra, yams, and mac&cheese. I've been eating good all weekend long. It was 3 meals' worth of food and all of it was excellent! I added just a tiny bit of salt to my fish but otherwise all the flavors were spot on. The sauce is perfectly smoky and not overly sweet, and the mac had just a perfect spice that didn't overwhelm it and enhanced the flavor. All the meats were cooked just right and so smoky good. Ordered delivery from here. Hadn't had Reo's since they were in John's Landing. I like the charcoal smoky barbecue taste of their ribs. I loved their ribs at that time. Decided to order a half rack of baby back's with mashed potatoes and baked beans. I asked for sauce on the side. Delivery took about 20 minutes. To make things short into the point... When I open my order there was already sauce on the ribs and normally when you order a half rack or full rack the ribs are intact and not cut up. So I got six cut up ribs That definitely did not come from the same rack. To top it off three of of the ribs were burnt to a crisp and tough as leather. The other three ribs were falling off the bone yummy good and tender. So apparently they cut up the ribs so that you get three yummy good ones and three leather burnt ones.... and then cover them all with sauce so that maybe you won't notice. Hmmmmm....not cool!! Don't express the mashed potatoes to come with gravy because they don't. In the bag beans or dry with barely any sauce. Reo I'm on to you! There are lots of other places that I can spend my $25 and get decent ribs. read more

Never tried them before, and they were closed a LONG time due to a fire. But they reopened. I was looking forward to trying them. Wasn't expecting much because of previous reviews, but still disappointed. I got 2 of their pulled pork sliders. Ate one walking home. Sooo dry. Maybe 1 tsp of BBQ sauce on top of overcooked meat. Very hard to build up enough saliva to eat it. When I got home, I put extra BBQ sauce on the 2nd slider. A little better, but meat still dry & tough. Indoor seating is still being worked on. ETA 2 months. There's a couple small tables outside with no cover. It's only been open a couple weeks, so maybe they're still working out the kinks. I'm all about the Macaroni and Cheese, but the BBQ... I'm so sad. I had great expectations for this place since it always smelled so good while I was driving through the neighborhood. Then it burned down and I had to wait an eternity for it to reopen, only to be disappointed. Here's the skinny... of the two dishes I tried, both were inconsistently cooked and seasoned. There were hard and chewy bits of meat, as well as soggy pieces in the same serving. The mouth feel was a little off-putting. But did I mention the Mac??? It's a BBQ joint, though - and that's where it lost my vote. The building is amazing, the location is perfect; Reo's has so much going for it. Do I dare give it a third chance? I ordered Reo's Ribs via Grub Hub for my sister and mother who live on the other side of town from me. Thought it would be a nice surprise. I asked her to let me know how the food was. This is a copy of her text back to me. ** Not to complain, but I wouldn't order that again. The meat was good (a little fatty) Benson (the dog) liked that part , the cornbread was so dry that it exploded as soon as the fork hit it. The mashed potatoes were just weird. They were brown...maybe had garlic in them. The coleslaw was dry. They're back open!! I was surprised to see that today, but also I was hungry, so I popped in and got fried catfish, coleslaw, and fried okra. OUT. STANDING. So far the only place I've found in Portland that does Southern food right, and they've elevated it way past right. The okra was tender, light, and crispy, without being oily. The catfish was the same, with a perfect thin cornbread crust, and generous enough for a second meal. The slaw was served with its delicate, lightly sweet dressing on the side, so the very thinly-shredded cabbage could still be crisp on serving. So good. Even the tartar sauce is good. I don't like tartar on my fish, but this warrants repurposing in a potato salad tomorrow. Super excited for the hands-down best Southern food in Portland to be back with us. I'm gonna lie to my mom and tell her it's a meat 'n three so she'll let me take her there. I mean it's kinda a meat 'n three. I walk by this place often on my way to the Hollywood Farmer's market. It's hard to ignore a barbecue place that's smoking meat on the sidewalk. The whole neighborhood smells like barbecue. It makes a body's mouth water. So I finally popped in for lunch last weekend. All in all I have to say that the place is pretty legit. What impressed me were the sides. With so many barbecue joints, they focus so much on the barbecue that the sides seem like an after-thought. Not here. First, the collard and mustard greens mix is absolutely delicious. I have no idea how they get that flavor, but they're really really good. The cole slaw is also addictive. It's light on the mayo, and obviously has sugar in the dressing. But it's really tastey. The baked beans didn't do a lot for me. They seemed like what you'd get from a can. I had the ribs, which were smoky and delicious. The sauce is a bit sweet for my tastes, but all in all this is decent barbecue. The decor looks relatively unchanged since the location's days as Hollywood Burger, which is appropriate for an establishment like this. About the only noticeable difference are some Snoop Dog posters on the wall (Reo is reputedly Snopp Dog's cousin). On the down side? Well it's frankly the price. I got a meat plate, which is basically what amounts to a "meat and three" plate in the south, minus one of the three sides. It's $12. It came with three ribs and a choice of two sides. And if you want "premium" sides (i.e., collards and beans and such rather than cheap starches) those cost extra. So there's a bit of a bang-per-buck problem in my view. With the sides up-sell and a drink I think I was in for about $15 and left still feeling a bit hungry. read more

Writing this review with a very satisfied stomach. Really good food! My favorites were the cole slaw and fried chicken. Ordered through DoorDash so I don't have any insight on the customer service. What I ordered: 5 meat sampler - some of the ribs were salty but overall had a wonderful smokey flavor. Felt like I was eating by a campfire. Honestly I feel pretty let down about this place. I ordered the barbeque chicken sandwich with a side of Cole slaw for $8. It was a good pretty price which is nice however, the wait time and actual food didn't impress me. I waited about 20 minutes and my friend waited even longer and only one person was ahead of us with a takeout order. The Cole slaw was just a mix you get from a bag with sweet corn syrupy looking sauce poured ontop and the chicken is doused with so much sweet barbecue sauce your sandwich falls apart. I wished I could taste more of just the chicken because I know they smoke their own meat. The chicken wasn't bad quality and what I could taste had a nice a smokiness. What can I say about Reo's ribs? The first time I had them was when they were at 112th and Powell in SE Portland circa 2013. It was happenstance that I dropped in to get takeout and was delighted by it. Fast forward a few years and I drove by the spot that once was Reo's to find an empty lot, and I was saddened. In 2017, I was driving through Hollywood district only to be thrilled by the sight of Reo's Ribs once more. A few days later, I returned to check out the barbecue to make sure it held up to the standards that I had set for what I expected of Reo's Ribs. The food I got was the most scrumptious barbecue that I had gotten in quite a while. Each time I return to Reo's Ribs, the barbecue is just as good (sometimes better) than I remembered. The sides they serve are delicious as well. Reo's is definitely worth trying, especially for their brisket. YUM! read more

I was excited to try Rio's Ribs for the first time. I thought about it all day and was hungry when I arrived. The verdict? I will never eat there again. I ordered the 18.00 ribs. The 2 ribs they served for 18.00 came with coleslaw and cornbread. After working the 2 ribs for about 45 seconds I was done. I spent 18.00 for about 1 ounce of meat. And if your looking for dry rub forget this place. You get sugar combined with bbq sauce for sickeningly sweet combo. I then turned to the cornbread. Dry and most likely from a box. The coleslaw I'm pretty sure was the bagged variety where you add your own dressing. The dressing I'm pretty sure was simple syrup only thickened. Add to that the ambience is horrible. I guess it's partly my fault for not asking but when ordering $14 boneless chicken I assumed it was boneless chicken breast. When I got home it was a pile of cut chicken mostly dark meat. Sorry, but this one's a pass. I'm a BBQ snob, and more than one person whom I trust has told me to get to Reo's and try the pulled pork. Well I did. It's just not that good. Dry and tough. Served as a sandwich, the meat required so much sauce that the bun became sloppy and fell apart. I ended up just picking the meat out with a fork and going for the sides. Speaking of the sides, I had two. The cole slaw was just bad. Somehow both underdressed and over-sweet. The mac and cheese, however, was amazing! Some of my favorite that I've had in Portland. I know that they do large catering portions of all of their meats and sides, so I may at some point get a huge mess of macaroni to feed the masses. But really, that's the only reason I'd be back. The mashed potatoes were delicious. However the attitude in this joint was a HUGE turn off. The owner was rude to patrons, rushed people out the door during closing and was not welcoming to people that were new to the establishment. I would say the food was good but not GREAT. Had they been nicer to guests coming in the door I think the overall experience would've been better. Bad customer service can certainly make the food not worth going back for. read more

I love the smell of barbecue. I love the smokiness of good barbecue and of course I love the taste when it's done right. When one is wandering around Hollywood in recent weeks, you'll notice that you can smell it wherever you are, and then you wonder, where is it coming from? Well, the answer to the question is at the former spot of the old Hollywood Burger Bar. Introducing Reo's, well at least in a new location. Reo's has been around for some time but has changed locations. For those in the know, this is the uncle of one Snoop D-O double G. Fo-shizzle. As for those smells that drew this barbecue lover in??? Well, there's a rather impressive smoker that sits on the side of the building. Unfortunately, I was unable to find out the wood they were using, but it's not an overpowering taste when it comes to the meat. As for the food? There was good and not so good. First off, the pork was unreal. I got the $6 combo with a sandwich (choice of meat includes pulled pork, BBQ chicken or Mississippi sausage, for an extra $3 you can get brisket) a side and a drink. Small sides are $3. So I got pulled pork with slaw and a side of mac & cheese. The pulled pork ( more like chunks of pork) was the highlight. Big ole chunks of slightly charred pork, dripping with a mild sauce, that in no way interfered with the taste of the meat or the smokiness of it either. It was very well balanced. In other words, Reo knows his stuff when it comes to smoking meat. The mac & cheese was a little oily at the bottom but with jalapeño mingling its way throughout, it too was pretty darn good. The one shortcoming, which other tips and reviews have mentioned is the coleslaw. REO has some special sauce of his own making he puts on the shredded cabbage, but its way too sweet, like Karo syrup sweet and needs a contrast like vinegar or some of the jalapeños that he likes to put in the mac. I wasn't a fan of it. If you've been here before when it was the burger bar, it's small, so I'm guessing it can get pretty busy during lunch. According to the woman running the front, the day I was there was a rare slow day since they've been open. But the meat is worth it. It's a good location in Hollywood, since there is no other barbecue close by, so it's worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood. I'll be back to try some ribs or chicken soon. Enjoy. read more

I was getting my hair cut across the street when she told me a BBQ place had just opened up across the street. It literally opened at 11a today. A guy came in and said they have a special going on, $6 gets you a pulled pork or chicken sandwich, fries and a drink. It was about lunch and this guy just so happened to be hungry so I made my way over to check them out. Don't sleep on this place. I got their $6 pulled pork sandwich lunch special, comes with fries and it was off the chain good! Service is fast and friendly. It's a small place with super limited seating. The place seats maybe 15 people total. It's owned by Snoop Dog's uncle which is pretty cool. Hoping to see him in here one day. That would be cool read more
