Truffle fries and meatballs were good. The sweet potato fries were the best I've EVER had! My only concern is that they said they served Coke products, but my drink tasted a lot more like Pepsi. At the risk of sounding corny, the name is the best descriptor of this place. It has what I at least think of as a supper club feel. It's an old space in a good way--lots of space across multiple floors, dimly lit but welcoming, invitingly creaky on a few floorboards where you just feel like you're gone back a few decades. Food and cocktails are solid. Went for lunch and enjoyed a quality burger and some cocktails. Kind of like the fact that (at least as best I can tell) there is no bar menu...just order a drink, and the bartender will whip it up (though, I'd note, this means you can get different riffs on the same drink depending on who makes it...I enjoyed the old fashioned I ordered more than the one a friend ordered a little later during the meal). Service was friendly and welcoming (even accommodated us to move seats to try to get to some warmer space, as it was a bit chilly by the window in the middle of winter). read more

Not being able to get into Monkey Bar I tried this place literally across the street. We were asked before heading down the short steps if we were here for dinner or drinks and if we had a reservation. Dinner, no reservation -- so UP the stairs we went. The person unlocked the door for us and then showed us inside. Kind of a strange start to a meal, but it worked. Inside, the place was mostly quiet. Only a few other people on this second level. Service was good though they did get my order wrong somewhere and needed to turn around the Ribeye - Truffle fries in short order. The ribeye itself was good. The fries were amazing. Bill's Classic Caesar - Romaine hearts, shaved grana cheese, croutons, and boqueróns to start was okay. In the end, it was a great plan B. I can't compare it to Monkey Bar since the closest I have gotten to that experience is hearing about it from others. read more

We were looking for a place to grab a drink mid day in the area. We came across Bill's on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The ground floor is a bar, and the restaurant is upstairs. We had a seat at one of their tables in the back. We were even able to bring a stroller in. We were warned that it gets very busy after 5pm with the midtown work crowd. I attended a private dinner at Bills last week. The event itself was great, but everything relating to the restaurant was absolutely terrible. This was one of the worst managed private events I've ever seen. Discovered this place on In Kind with an awesome welcome deal and great reviews. We opted to sit in the tavern for more casual vibes and since the dining room was mostly empty. We were a little confused at first due to the absence of weight staff or a drink menu. Everything had to be ordered through the bartender. The bartender was very kind and personable and had great energy. It was unfortunate they did not have their own cocktail list but they were able to make almost anything. We started the meal with the artichoke spinach dip, which was really good and was not too heavy in the way that some versions of this dish can be. We then shared the burger and the fettuccine allow vodka for our meal. The burger was fine, nothing too special and the pasta was really really good! I would buy that sauce in a jar if I could. One of the staff, maybe the owner had also mentioned they had a DJ on the third floor that night so we went up there after dinner. It wasn't too busy but a really nice space. Only downside was I ordered wine that ended up being much pricier than I would've liked, and I had no idea since there was not a drink menu to go off of. It's rare that I go to dinner and drinks all in one place but it was a really fun evening and a great establishment. I really wish the Tavern area was my own personal neighborhood bar! read more

The restaurant is okay. My friend and I came here and ordered a few small appetizers (fries, wings, dessert) and four drinks. Our total was $163 with tax. We asked for a dark and stormy and what was served was a drink that included a light rum and grenadine instead of dark rum and ginger beer. They didn't bother to tell us until after it was served that they didn't have the two key ingredients of the drink. The fries were just okay (we ordered only the salt/vinegar but they served and charged us for the plain as well), and definitely not worth $24 for the portion and flavor of the two. The spinach and artichoke dip was decent but not amazing and a bit pricey at $17. The $18 wings were okay but overly sauced and a small portion. The dessert was flavorful and probably the best part of the meal. I probably wouldn't come back. read more

This place is the best dinner I've had in New York, and I've lived here for 8 years. The restaurant is perfectly lit, super old school New York vibe. We came here for Valentine's Day and the Martinis did not disappoint. They are chilled and fantastically made. Get the wings bro! The burger was juicy and perfectly cooked. Service is great and the ambiance is old school NYC American Bar. The music had me jamming while eating dinner. I love that you can just go in for drinks at the bar on the ground floor, or have dinner on the second floor dining room. So much history in this building as well. First things first, I'm not a big fan of Manhattan. Definitely a Brooklyn kind of guy. Walked in, was immediately greeted by the handsome Bartender Max :). Ambiance was lovely, great tunes, etc. He was incredibly attentive and made the perfect Cosmopolitan I've had in years!!! Bill's is NYC's best kept little secret. The food is delicious, one of the best steaks I've had in Manhattan. And the snacking bacon by the bar was fantastic. The staff was very friendly, Max the bartender made one of the best espresso martinis I've ever tasted. Loved the giant piano and the decor. Was surprised to know there were several levels to the building. Not something you see often in New York City anymore. Huge space would be great for private events.
