I've had my first session with Bill. It was astonishing effective. I had not been able to sit on a straight chair, stand, walk & lay on my back since before Christmas because of severe, unrelenting, vicious pain in my coccyx (worst), sacrum, sacroiliac joints, & piriformis. All I could do is go to the bathroom. I'm new to DC, 2 1/2 years, and had not been able to find competent medical care. Before moving here, I had excellent health care. I've had pain since 1997. With medication & procedures, I led a normal life. I was not at all limited or compromised. I remembered that I had been Rolfed about 35 years ago. I found Bill on line. He agreed to see me immediately. I could barely hobble to the toilet. I was totally disabled. When I got home from seeing Bill, I played Zoomies with Buddy, the dog. Rolfing needs a whole new Yelp sub-category. It should stay under Health and Medical, but perhaps have a sub-category called "Therapeutic Bodywork". Some massage therapists should be under this category as well, rather than under "Beauty" - hah! Bill is an excellent Rolfer. There aren't that many in town, maybe 15 in the whole area. Bill is extremely professional, and has a very lovely, professional and relaxing office. Rolfing is deep fascia work which reorders the body, and as such it usually requires several visits to be effective. And it's not cheap. But Bill can do amazing things with correcting posture and alignment. I felt two inches taller by the time I was done with my 10 Rolfing sessions, and my muscles were much happier to not be holding my spine and head at funky angles. After 12 years of going to a Chiropractor for temporary relief, I decided to try Rolfing. Bill had good marks in yelp. After about 11 treatments, I am pain free. It was severe enough that everyday was a struggle. I now know from Bill that the muscles were pulling the bones out of alignment. What a relief. Bill has been careful, through and professional. The money I've paid Bill over the years is some of the best money I've ever spent. Even though Rolfing is "expensive" compared to other kinds of bodywork, the benefits are light years ahead of what one would receive from the even the best deep tissue massage. After a few sessions with Bill, my "rounded shoulders...I-sit-at-a-computer-all-day" posture was changed so remarkably that my tailor remarked "your posture has totally changed." Friends who hadn't seen me in a few months told me I looked taller and "buffer"...even though I had basically the same body composition as always. Bill is thoroughly professional and a great guy. He explains to you why he's doing what he's doing at every point in the process, and he also is careful to calibrate the pressure that causes discomfort. Bill Short is an amazing healer. I have been seeing him about once a month for a year now. His Rolfing has restored movement and function to a part of my spine that had been frozen for more than 40 years. I cannot recommend Bill highly enough, and I have sent several friends to him, who have also had good experiences. Rolfing has lowered my chronic pain level and changed the wear pattern on my shoes. Though I agree that Bill demonstrates a strong understanding of anatomy and bodywork, I was disappointed to find that Bill doesn't keep written record of his clients. After the first session, I found that he was repeating himself. At first this struck me as odd, but later I was led to believe that he wasn't doing it for emphasis sake, but rather because he had forgotten what he had said/done with me before. When my boyfriend and I moved from DC and wanted to finish our sessions with another rolfer, I called Bill to ask whether he could forward me some information about our sessions. He called me back to inform me that he doesn't keep record of his clientele. This would not be an issue if he had the ability to remember details about his clients. However, he could not even confirm how many sessions we had completed or at what point we should begin with the next rolfer. Bill Short is a great resource for a type of physical manipulation that makes a huge difference. Three years after surgery, I'm still having issues, and every time I see Bill, I feel that all is aligned and right with the world. In addition, he has a wonderful, caring temperament and spending an hour plus is a pleasure, even with the ouch factor of the treatment. I'd been wanting to go to a rolfer for about 10 years before I FINALLY took the plunge, only because a friend of mine married a rolfer (not Bill!) and he always offered amazing insights into various aches and pains and body alignment issues I raised. I looked up DC rolfers at the Rolf Institute website (rolf.org) and found Bill. I had been nervous about going to a rolfer because of the pain I'd heard about from people who did rolfing a couple of decades ago. But from my friend, I learned that the Rolf Institue had shifted its approach, and while there is deep tissue work happening, rolfers, including Bill, really respect people's limits. It's not all about pain! When I first met Bill he took a complete history of my body and injuries. I went through the entire 10-session intro, which was tailored to my body and worked around the injuries I gained during the period I was seeing him. Among other things I broke a bone in my foot and was on crutches for 6 weeks during this period, but thankfully got adjustments afterwards that really erased the auxillary impacts of the broken bone, time on crutches, etc. I feel like the basic 10 sessions were a mid-life tune-up for me. I'd been a runner for 30 years before I started, and I had a lot of running injuries that were still knotted up in my shins, thighs, and other body parts, and my body alignment in general was not perfect. After all the body work, I feel like everything got erased from my body. Bumps in my shins and thighs literally went away, and my body alignment got fixed. The 10-session intro goes over your entire body, so you get work done on places you can't even imagine -- the inside of your mouth, for example, and muscles that run into your belly (yikes!). At times, the work went to my limit, and I had to ask Bill to wait a second while I steadied myself. Most of the time, it was far less intense. I'd highly recommend Bill and rolfing in general to anyone exploring deeper bodywork. It's definitely not Swedish massage! ;-) Afterwards, I've gone back for other injuries that are more than routine. If they stick around a while, they move around to related parts of the body, e.g. an original injury in the knee and then you compensate and something gets thrown out in your back, which affects your neck, etc. It's an amazing system to learn about. It really cuts through the pain to get to underlying causes. I've recommended Bill to many friends, including one who had siginficant pain from a car accident and had difficulty walking. Everything is now healed, and she's a new woman. She loves Bill! read more

My ten sessions with Bill changed my life. I had a gait issue that was making it difficult for me to walk, and was getting worse. No one could help, Rolfing was kind of a last resort. It is "bodywork", focusing on a deep tissue massage called "myofascial release". Rolfing invariably involves brief discomfort, you are undoing decades of adhesion and misalignment. Bill keeps this to a minimum, nothing for me that lasted more than 10-15 seconds. He is pleasant, informative, very knowledgeable. Chatty enough to be relatable, but never tedious or intrusive. Don't understand comments about his treatment record-keeping, there wouldn't be much point in that. Another Rolfer is just going to provide treatment based on how you present, irrespective of what work was done before. Rolfing generally involves a series of 10 weekly sessions. Many patients report the benefits last for years. In my case, keep coming back every 4-6 weeks, that's a good way to protect my investment. My mobility is back, movement is more fluid and balanced. Walking, running, cycling, sitting are all easier and more comfortable. The overpronation of my foot was reduced as my muscles stopped pulling it out of alignment. I started seeing Bill in 2008 for chronic tension and discomfort in my upper back and shoulders that had plagued me for years in spite of my best efforts to eliminate it (deep tissue massage, regular exercise and stretching, yoga etc). Bill believed it was related to tension elsewhere in the body and focused on lengthening the tissue between my ribs. After a few sessions, I felt some twitching beneath my rib cage and the upper back pain finally released. I still go for regular tune ups and am very pleased. I have been going to Bill for a bit over a year and I couldn't recommend him more highly. I was born with hip dysplasia and have been out of alignment and in pain my whole life. I can stand up straight for the first time ever and my pain level is much better. I am finally able to start doing some exercise without injuring myself (I couldn't even safely do yoga) and he has given me some valuable exercises to do that really are making a significant difference. From talking to other people, I would also add that I don't think he is as painful as some others. Also, I understand that many rolfers may go through a set pattern, but with Bill, he always looks at where you are in the moment. Given the nature of my problem (a specific issue since birth), I clearly require something different than what might be a more standard pattern. Bill is an incredible professional. When I walked into his office with aching knees and back, I was unsure that he would be able to help. He immediately assessed my situation and began working on my quadriceps, hamstrings and IT bands. He also worked on my thoracic cavity and back as he explained the relationship between my posture and the issues with my knees. I had a persistent lower back ache. Saw a chiropractor first and that helped rule out any spinal issues. But the pain and aches lingered... some days I was so stiff it hurt to walk. Other times, the slightest movement would pull my lower back muscles. And so I finally found and went to see Bill. After just one session, I am aligned, my back doesn't hurt. It's been a few years since I had Rolfing done by Bill. I finally have a yelp account so time for a review. I'm not sure whether I notice anything different after Rolfing. However, there were several occasions where after I had my session, later in the day, some part of my body would hurt in a good way. So it seems like he rolfed one area and another area is affected. Bill is amazing. Rolfing is a powerful therapy, but I am pretty sure it is very important to have a good practioner, or better yet a great one, and Bill is a great one. I had my ten sessions years ago and it made a huge difference - before I could not walk down stairs forwards or pedal with my right leg. After - no problems. I tried chiro, rest, ice, rehab, nothing worked for 6 months. Then 10 sessions and I was cured. Since then, I have gone back for a session or two a year because I surf or paddle whitewater or ride hard 5 or 6 days a week and every year one way or another I get reinjured. It is not that the benefits of Rolfing don't last that keeps me coming back - it is that I get new injuries. I probably get twice the time on the water by going to Bill. Waiting for these injuries to heal on their own with rest is only partially heals them and it takes weeks. Results are pretty much instant for me when I got to see Bill. Highly recommended. The best thing you can do for sports related muscle, tendon or joint problems is go to Bill! read more
