I had a problem with a lock that would not open. I tried several duplicate keys but no luck. I send an email to Bill to set up an appointment for him to come and fix it. He responded immediately and offered a time. What was absolutely outstanding was he gave me some specific instructions on some things to do to try to get the door to unlock. Bingo-the door opened. Always like local service people, so called him, wanting help in changing a couple of locks, or someone who could do it, without spending a lot. After I sent a couple of photos, he saved me all the money by encouraging me over the phone to try it, and was available for consultation. Truly, Bill is an artist--a perfectionist who does not quit until he has repaired and replaced and taken apart, cleaned, oiled and restored to better-than-new condition. And he is as good as his word. Not only did he appear promptly, spend an enormous amount of time and energy in re-keying (and repairing!) every lock and knob in our house and charge us very fairly for his efficient and wonderful workmanship, but he is such a great guy that when I had to call him back a few months later when a bolt became mysteriously bent within its housing, he didn't charge us---although this problem certainly wasn't his fault. Bill has the old-school approach that good enough just isn't good enough. Bill is awesome and patient and - I didn't know this was possible - passionate about locks. (This is especially useful if you live in an older house with older types of locks that can be hard to work with.) Probably the best part is that he puts a warranty on his work. We recently had a problem with a lock he had worked on. It was the end of the day but because it was an important door, he came at 7pm and stayed until 9pm. In the end, the problem had nothing to do with the work he had done on it previously but he still insisted on only charging me for replacement parts - 15$. I hardly ever write reviews but, this deserves it. Bill is amazing. I locked my keys in my apartment in the morning and had to rush to work. I called him and he said he wouldn't be able to make it to my place until 7:30 pm and gave me a recommendation of another place in case I needed to get in sooner. Well I called 3 different places and they all said "sorry, we don't have anyone available in the near future, we close at 5." I called Bill back and he was SO nice and so professional! He showed up right on time and was so apologetic that he couldn't get there earlier. He got my lock open within a few minutes and noticed that my deadbolt was put on upside down. He said "This kind of stuff drives me crazy, it makes it too hard to turn." So he takes it off and puts it right side up free of charge! I wish there were a Bill Walter for everything and anything that goes wrong in my home. We had a front door lock that was jamming and I suspected we'd need to rekey, so I called Bill's number. We didn't need to rekey but the entire rather elderly mechanism hah to be taken apart and examined to figure out what was causing the jam, and what was needed to fix it. This was not a straightforward job and Bill was thorough, patient, meticulous and didn't leave until he was entirely satisfied that he'd rectified the problem. Bill is exactly how you wish every business would be: clear, friendly, skilled, and determined to get it right. The cylinder in my lock shattered. Luckily, I caught him right when he had a gap in his schedule, so he was able to come right away. He replaced the cylinder and keyed it for our current keys. He then ensured that everything with the door and the lock was functioning as smoothly as possible so the cylinder wouldn't shatter again. He charged a reasonable price for the service and the parts.
