We have come to Billy's many times over the years while visiting Wells. Had not been there in several years so decided to stop in for lunch. Always enjoyed their steamed clams and lobster rolls. My husband and I split an order of steamers. They were $19.99 for a one pound bucket. Very disappointed in the quality of the clams. They actual tasted like they were old. Probably some if the worst ones I have ever had. My husband had a haddock sandwich which was good. My small lobster roll on the other hand was another huge disappointment. $25.99 fora small hot dog roll. The lobster meat barely filled it! Plus we paid $10 a beer for Maine Linch. Way over priced! We will not be returning. So many better restaurants in Wells. read more

The server was very nice but they definitely have her too many tables. I get a strong vibe that people do not like working for the owner. Good was so bland and over cooked, I mean how do you make a baked potato bad?? The rolls tasted like wonder bread (no flavor at all). The food was pretty inedible. read more

Although somewhat of a tourist trap, we didn't mind getting caught in their trap one bit. The service: 5 stars without question. They seat a great deal of patrons each night so you are served and out the door rather quickly. Even with the heavy volume of diners, the staff is still always very friendly and attentive. The food: A menu that you'd come to expect from an oceanfront restaurant. Everything we've ever had was excellent. We've tried the chowder(ridiculously delicious), lazy lobster, stuffed lobster, clams, oysters, scallops, crab cakes and many other things. Billy's deliver big time in both taste and very generous portions. Ambiance: Strongly recommend waiting for a window seat that overlooks the marsh. Nothing pacifies the soul more than sipping on a drink while looking out at the beautiful thick green marsh as the famous Maine fog rolls across the top of it. Billy's also owns Hidden Cove brewing co (phenomenal brewery!). The brewery is located about a quarter mile down the marsh road and many of their brews are kept on tap at Billy's. Highly recommend a visit to the Hidden Cove before or after dinner. I strongly support and endorse visiting this restaurant. It always makes our short list of places to dine when we vacation in Wells and I am certain you will find it enjoy your dining experience as well. See ya next year! read more

A very large group of power company workers, tree cutters and various support staff overwhelmed Billy's every night and they were just great. Food was great, service was great and they took care of us almost every night we were there. I went for the Buck A Shuck Oysters! They were great and fresh! Also got the Clam Chowder it was just ok for the hype it gets. Got the Swordfish it was good and nice portions. The person I was with got the Seafood Sampler they said it was good I tried the seafood stuffing it was great!Service was slow and scarce but we sat outside in the Temporary COVID seating so I get it. Visiting Maine for a family trip and we were told this was a town staple. There's a wide selection of seafood but our chowder and main dishes were very mediocre, especially for the price. Seafood sampler had very little flavor. We dined on the later side so maybe quality was not at its best because we were served towards closing time. read more

at this time 1819 hrs on 22 july the bar service horrible at the bar . we stood at bar the entire time and brook looked away from us for 20 plus minutes. she kept waiting on those she had already served drinks to and she continued to serve the same group of people who wore a tshirt for a party at daves place. a guy who lives down street near beach. so this tells me she discriminates who she serves when the bar has seats filled 75%. when. she did come over we asked if there was a drink list. she said yes put napkins down and never came back. we finally left. she cost this place money. Ethan is absolutely awesome. he worked his ass off and we had drinks within minutes of being seated. he had our food out fresh and hot and he took care of our needs throughout dinner. thank you Ethan. we witnessed you hauling ass around the dining room and to kitchen and you handled our table and all others in the dining room with no issue. thank you for making our visit worth it. . read more

Went in February and it was pretty crowded. I was told not to even try getting in during the summer. That's a shame, because we really enjoyed the meal - fish sandwich, clam strips, scallops - all excellent. Give me a little more elbow room and it would have been perfect. Considering the price, dinner was disappointing. I had the swordfish which was thin and over cooked. For desert I ordered the maple walnut bread pudding and was told it did not turn out but the chocolate chip bread pudding was very good as well. I decided to try it, but I think I got the maple walnut it had chocolate drizzle but was dry and tough almost needed a knife to cut through it. Have eaten here 3-4 in the last 2 months . Always sit in bar area . Today we sat at the bar and were greeted quickly by one server got our drinks then nothing. Then the other server came over with a real attitude and we ordered two lobster rolls one of each size and asked for no pickles please. Food came rolls and fries no garnish ugly presentation . My large roll was like a rock lobster was ok very bland , server was dumping dishes in front of us and filling beer but never asked how it was. When done took dishes and dropped check .. we gave our reward card and credit card I normally tip 25- 30 % but not today still left 18% but will not eat there again if miss personality is working the bar. At almost $50.00 for my dinner, (not including drinks) they sent me out a baked stuffed lobster...the stuffing was bone dry to the point it was like a fine dry bird seed and super salty. The lobster I took out and soaked it in butter, when I took a bite my arteries hardened INSTANTLY from the amount of salt! When I sampled just the meat, it alone was super salty...are they trying to kill me?? I ate it because I hadn't seen my sister, who has cancer, in 7 years and didn't want to ruin her experience. She told the waitress for me though and although I didn't ask for anything, I was told there was nothing they could do. No discount, nothing. Had I told her sooner, she said she could have done something. What? How fast can I eat when the salt dried out my mouth and my drink wasn't being refilled? Serious? Look at the sawdust stuffing! That alone should have been grounds to return it. But because I'm considerate, she can't do anything. They only had to sample their so called stuffing to see I was't lying. My family and I had dinner there last night and the food was very good. I had the large order of fried clams and was satisfied with the amount and quality of them, very tasty. My son in law lived his lobster chowder and bacon wrapped scallops. My daughter and father's baked haddock dinners were delicious. The service was absolutely wonderful, very friendly and attentive. A spent a week in Maine and we stopped at Billy's for lunch. The bar has a wonderful view of the marsh & kayakers. The haddock and clam baskets were fantastic. The haddock was juicy and flaky with so much fish. The clam strips were sweet and flavorful with great Cole slaw. The wonderful waitress made us feel as if we'd known each other for years. Ordering and credit card payment was done in the hand held device the waitress carried. I ordered off the side menu. Clam chowder. Good flavor but more potatoes than clams. The bacon wrapped scallops were excellent. The small order of onion rings came heaped in a smaller serving dish. As has been my experience in this area, the sides have enough for 2. The restaurant has a dirty feel to it. The table cloths appear to be old and ours was sticky. The chowders were ok, we've had much better. The dinners were lousy! The fish and fries tasted nasty. A visit to Billy's Chowder House has been a family vacation ritual for decades now. This place never disappoints me even years and years later. The seafood is as fresh as you could ask for- I had the garlic mussels, and house salad (add lobstah!). The gluten free menu was short but sweet- I would love to have seen a sautéed version of the fisherman's platter! Our wait was short, our server was helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable.
