The restaurant has a dirty feel to it. The table cloths appear to be old and ours was sticky. The chowders were ok, we've had much better. The dinners were lousy! The fish and fries tasted nasty. A visit to Billy's Chowder House has been a family vacation ritual for decades now. This place never disappoints me even years and years later. The seafood is as fresh as you could ask for- I had the garlic mussels, and house salad (add lobstah!). The gluten free menu was short but sweet- I would love to have seen a sautéed version of the fisherman's platter! Our wait was short, our server was helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. Came to Maine with the explicit goal of having a decent Maine lobster. Since the Legal Seafoods in Maryland have closed, we have been bereft and even the fancy seafood restaurants in Annapolis failed me. Billy's Chowder House hit the mark! You can find fresh seafood all over the area but this place has a great location near Wells beach and a wonderful sunset view on the marsh. We ordered lobster rolls and mussels and were amazing at how fresh the food was. The lobster was soft and sweet and the portions were good. The sauce on the mussels wasn't the best but you can definitely still appreciate it. read more

I usually reserve reviews for good ones but this is worth mentioning. The waitress and her trainee were overly helpful and sweet and the side of fried clams, out of this world. What ruined it for me was the overly spicy hot Absolut Bloody Mary and totally naked baked haddock. I had to order stuffing on the side to top the fish with as they wouldn't give me a few bread crumbs or crushed ritz. That side of seafood stuffing wasn't cheap and took 20 minutes to reach table.By then, it was time for a doggy bag. In their defense, they reimbursed for the hotter than hot Bloody Mary and the veggies and rice were good. I should know enough to stick to restaurants where I know the baked fish is prepared the way I like it, or stay home and make it myself. This place has the best fried oysters I have ever had, hand's down. There was six of us and all of us are still raving about the food and the service!!! On Wednesday's they have fresh oysters for $1.00, excellent, we even ordered an extra dozen! Checked this place out on a recent trip to Maine. Nothing fancy, but the food was solid and the service was both friendly and good. They have a good local draft list and some interesting cocktails. My group tried the shrimp cocktail, lobster roll, lazy lobster, baked haddock and chowder. All were good. The seafood stuffing in the baked haddock got super high marks. We didn't get dessert because we were stuffed but the table next to us did and they looked delicious! I would definitely go back. read more

What a fabulous find! We stopped in from our road trip from Boston to Portland. I had read rave reviews on the chowder and it did not disappoint. I told Kristie C our server we were from Florida and she was wonderful. Not only did she provide excellent service and excellent food, she gave us a lot of information about the local area. Very thick and hearty. #2: The lobster stew is THE BEST I've ever had. Delicious and brimming full of lobster. #3. The lobster roll is probably in the top 3 I've had in Maine. #4. The clam strips are amazing! Lightly battered and very fresh. We usually hit Billy's two or three times during our stay in Wells. That should tell you how much we like the place. YUMM-O. Billy's was recommended to us by our B&B innkeeper on our first night, so we decided to give it a shot. It definitely has more of a dive-y, sports-bar kind of feel to it than we were expecting (we were told it was a casual place), but that was fine with us. During our little Maine getaway, we gorged ourselves on seafood every day, but Billy's was definitely one of our favorite spots. We had a super friendly waitress and a nice seat by a window overlooking the water (marsh?). The platters are a great way to go to sample several different items. Just be mindful that you can only have the items either ALL grilled or all fried. We opted for the half-and-half platter (large sized) of fried clams (whole belly, but you can also just get strips) and fried scallops. I wasn't as much of a fan of the scallops fried, but my husband was totally sold. It was a pretty heavy meal (we hardly touched the fries that came with it), so I would suggest thinking about splitting one of those large platters with someone else unless you are really, really hungry! We also had the lobster stew which was, simply put, outstanding. If you live in the area or if you are staying for a while in the Wells region, it might be worth it to register for their loyalty rewards program. read more

I wish I could give Billy's a better review. The first thing out were the rolls that were nothing special. Then came the chowder that was creamless, watery and basic. The full belly clams were almost belly less and small and just breaded bread crumbs. The Fish Rueben seemed like a good idea but in the end was better with half the bread and no sauerkraut. I won't be going back. The Chowder House basically didn't know how to make chowder that says it all. One more thing that is pretty funny...they gave us a tiny piece of lemon for the clams and it was not only the smallest lemon slice in history but it had already been squeezed previously. Decided to go with the haddock Reuben...sounded a bit different from the traditional haddock meal. All I can say is "wow"! This was an exceptional sandwich, perfectly cooked on marble rye with a generous portion of fish. Really can't give this sandwich enough kudos (paired with an awesome Caesar salad)...will be ordering this again tomorrow. We had a great experience with Billy's for takeout. There are some great views, but it does seem a bit dark and dated inside, so I would choose not to eat there if I had a nicer place nearby to go back to. Service was very attentive at the door and we ordered two large lobster rolls and a bowl of clam chowder. Order came out in less than 10 minutes. Chowder was creamy and well seasoned with a good balance of clam and other flavors. A bit too much potato for me, but that was minor. Lobster rolls were very large and had wonderfully sweet lobster meat. One came with fries, which were fresh, slightly crunchy and well drained, not greasy. The other came with coleslaw that was fine. They use the hot dog sponge rolls which I prefer to toast as it absorbs flavors without overpowering the meat. Rolls were perfectly toasted with some crunch to them. The Chowder at Billy's is very good. Each cup had two BIG clam pieces. I do wish there was some more small chewy clam pieces but it wasn't bad at all. Solid broth. From the very beginning, the hostess gave us such a gross attitude. We walked in, asked for a table, and she gave us the sly eye of a super judgy prepubescent teenager while taking our name down on her sheet. Now I don't know if she's been having a rough day or not but can you at least fake a smile? Honestly don't know how a tourist located restaurant would hire such a mediocre person to greet their customers. Simply asked her a question as to why the indicator was making weird flashing signals and she answered in a super condescending tone: "When the indicator makes THIS signal, it means we're ready to take you." Like oh really? I didn't realize that's how it works??? She just completely didn't answer the question and dumbed down the instructions to a tiny machine that my aged grandmother would have already understood. I never got a straight forward answer from her - another hostess interjected before anything started and explained that the indicator just occasionally does a string of weird flashes every once in a while. Honestly, why couldn't hostess 1 just be as nice as hostess 2? Thankfully, our waitress Stephanie saved our dinner. I'm usually not a dramatic person but that hostess 1's personality really put a big dent in my evening and would make me think twice before coming back. Luckily, Stephanie was super patient and understanding when asked questions about the menu. She even offered to help us sign up for their loyalty rewards program after we told her that we've come by a few times already. The drama above aside, the food is great, the seafood is always fresh tasting and hot when it comes to you. Expect average prices for seafood. Parking isn't that huge...
