The limited presence of Chinese bakeries as a whole has been one of the lowlights of Houston's food…read morescene, but ones like Deluxe Bakery are among the last Cantonese ones of its kind. The Toisan families that had started them have either sold them off or are on their last leg. Despite their prominent Chinese name 榮達 (Honor & Success / Attain Glory), the Deluxe bit in English is a bit of a short sell. Similarly to Mee Ho in HK Mall (#1), it is undeniably old school, with zero ambiance, fancy pastries, or even chairs. Instead, it's a display of classics, and mainly good for the morning. Service is friendly and very bilingual in Cantonese / English. The egg tarts (蛋撻) are the initial sell, but there's much more selection across the shelves and displays. When they have coconut tarts, they are worth a shot. They have old school almond cookies (杏仁餅) and a good looking wifey cake (老婆餅). Their version of a cupcake (小蛋糕) is really more like a sponge cake but with a cupcake wrapper. The oven baked roast pork buns (叉燒包) have a nice sweetness to it and are fabulous when straight out of the oven. This also goes for their corn and ham bun (火腿玉米包. The pineapple buns (菠蘿包) have the perfect layer of crust on top and are some of the better ones I've had (fresh). Look for the ones on the rack before they're individually packaged for the shelves. Another bonus? They also sell zongzi (粽子) all throughout the year. Most of it is refrigerated and meant to be resteamed, but it seems they have more than one stuffing / filling. This is something I plan on investigating more thoroughly throughout the year. Like any proper old school bakery, it is cash only here. Cash most definitely rules and so does Deluxe Bakery.
