Birch is one of NYC's best local coffee chains, with several locations throughout the city. A favorite place of mine to set up shop and write for a few hours while toting around the village, the 7th ave branch is more spacious than other coffee shops, but not too much so. It's still cozy enough to feel intimate, yet large enough to allow for a good 20-30 person crowd indoors. This store is tactfully placed in the middle of the village, close to many notorious attractions, making it a lovely coffee hiatus for tourists and locals alike. The coffee and service are rightfully the primary focal points at Birch. The cold brew is well regarded as the best around. But personally, I always order a cappuccino or an americano. Grab a punch card and don't rush out, the good vibes at Birch seem to be in unlimited supply. read more

Yelped this area in search of a spot to meet up with a friend and came across Birch and their high ratings. It lived up to its high reviews! We both ordered their iced cold brew and split the lemon poppyseed donut - yum! The only downside is their small seating arrangement - there are only 3 tables and a small bar with high top stools so plan on waiting for a spot to sit or just plan to grab and go! read more

Around the corner from my friend's place. Was looking for a place to get coffee, food and kill a little time. Birch delivered. The space is tiny. It almost looked like there wouldn't be a place to sit, but there are just three tiny high tables and a little bar by the window. Probably would hold about 10 people total. Their menu offers coffee, grilled cheese and soup. I got a latte and a grilled cheese with tomato and avocado. I'm not a coffee snob, and I thought the coffee was good. The food was also pretty tasty. The counter people were friendly and definitely not pretentious. read more

Wow!! Perky, vibrant, inviting and fantastic. Well you think I was talking about the coffee, right?? That's just the friendly barista before the cup of Joe arrived. Real cozy place stopped by on a Friday nite and ordered my usual but the service of the wonderful female server made the Iced Latte more enjoyable. I mean come on get service with a smile and polite banter in New York City very organic feel to this place. Plus they were putting the cookies away as i peered the peanut butter cookie which was chewy and delicious. Off the beaten path this place makes a really good cup of coffee. These guys serve up strong and satisfying iced coffee. That said, $3.75 is a bit pricey for a small coffee served over ice. The space is very small (3-4 tables total) with no Wifi, so don't really expect to hang out here or expect any sort of privacy. Service can be a bit slow and they quickly get behind on orders during peak hours. They apparently have a killer Kyoto Cold Brew that is all the hype with coffee fanatics. That said, of the 5-6 times I've been here, it's always been sold out. All in all, West Village is known for it's awesome coffee joints. I expected a bit more out of Birch. read more

I work in the East Village and this location is closest to my job. Since I enjoy the Upper East Side location, I wanted to give this one a try. I've been here twice and twice I've been disappointed with my latte. Not only is the cup tiny, the latte itself is extremely acidic. I don't know if it's the beans they use or it's just not prepared well, but the coffee tastes acrid. The place itself is very small and can feel cramped. There's also no wifi and no bathroom. Even though I love the location and service is friendly enough, I probably won't return. read more

During our 1 week stay in NYC we came here 2 times for coffee and we've had a pleasant experience. Our AirBnB was really close by, but the reason we came back was the fact that their coffee tasted amazing. The milk drinks had a really great texture and mouthfeel - so I can confidently say their milk is frothed to perfection. The place is neat and clean with a few spots to sit down. I love this place. Quaint, quiet, and usually not crowded because there isn't Wifi. I like that they use a square reader for check-out, so I always get a text messaged receipt. Saving the environment, one iced chai latte at a time. The employees are always friendly, the menu isn't a comprehensive Starbucks-esque coffee house, and there is a shelf on the left when you walk in that functions as a stand-alone book exchange for locals. It's very cool to get a coffee and a new book every week. I'm a regular - and use my punch card to get free drinks often. Make sure you ask for one next time you are there! read more

5 stars for their lattes. The best (or at least one of the best) I've had in the city. Definitely a step up from Irving farm coffee wise. No credit card minimum!!! When it was Irving, the annoying minimum forced me to buy random crap just so I could get my coffee. Minus one star for the teeny tiny size and mediocre food selection. I appreciate the gluten free and vegan options but I wish they had a little bit more of a selection... Then it would be my one stop shop every morning! Irving had bagels I think... Stopped here for an iced coffee ($3.50) after a walking tour of Greenwich Village and wow, I was impressed! The baristas were extremely friendly and helpful and my coffee was prepared quickly. A little strong for my liking, but overall, great coffee and cozy atmosphere. Birch only has 4-5 high top tables in this cafe with some seating near the front window, but great place to grab a coffee or study/chat with friends. They also have a rewards card that allows you to receive a free coffee after 10 visits...cool! Highly recommend! read more

I went to Birch the first time yesterday, as the reviews here intrigued me. I'm not a coffee person, but I love tea. Someone had mentioned that they carry almond tea, which sounded delicious - and believe me guys, it was absolutely DELICIOUS. I think their almond tea is the best caffeine free tea I ever had. The best cold brew around. Recently moved to the area and have been comparing among the various options nearby. A lot of dissapointing flavors even from better-name places, but then this little gem popped up. Neither sour nor acidic but just nice and smooth. Go for the cold brew iced coffee! The only reason I'm docking a point is because recently I've had several of their hot beverage options (now that it's starting to get colder) and none of them are ever really fully hot. I've had 3 different items, not just coffee, and 2 times I've specifically requested "extra hot" and yet it's never really hot. Just lukewarm enough to drink right away but not hot enough to sip for a bit longer since it will turn into an iced beverage quickly. read more

I looooooove coffee! I have been a huge coffee fan even before the monopoly of Starbucks. That being said I would recommend Birch coffee to anyone in the West Village. All of the coffee is extremely tasty and the cold brew is the best. The espresso is strong and hearty and full of flavor. Small bar stool type tables to maximize on the small space- very good use of space, Birch! Same punch card is available between the 3 Birch locations. I also adore the small book shelf. Each location has their own little twist to the Gershwin Library- I LOVE IT! Pretentious Brooklyn meets tiny Manhattan: a lovely combination. The coffee is quite good. The decaf is quite strong -- I wonder if it actually has a good bit of caffeine. Prices are absurd. $3.75 for a small latte, plus 50 cents for iced. Really? Ice displaces a large portion of the coffee, making it cheaper for them to make. Lousy policy. The place is small, but not so small as to be to-go only. Capacity is nine people. There are three small tables, each with two barstools, as well as a window bar with three barstools. The barstools are uncomfortable, because you can't rest your feet, and I don't know why they do them. The staff are nice. The barista actually asked how I was. They keep their menu simple and use Helvetica. Nice alternative to the gaudy Starbucks menu. Most problematically, they don't have a restroom! Caffeine tends to make trips more frequent and urgent, making it particularly unfortunate. I don't generally care enough about coffee to make this excursion worthwhile. read more

Such a cute place!! I was walking by and couldn't pass up going inside. A very earthy feel, with a wooden kind of theme. they have extremely good coffee here. I had the Flat White which is some Australian version of the latte but slightly richer...got it to go as I was in a rush ..but they made it pretty and tasty. great spot. Next time I plan on lingering here for awhile and trying out the food. read more

I originally and mostly used to frequent the 27th St. location when it was in the Gershwin hotel. It was after they moved that I started coming to the 7th Ave. location...because, it's just less busy in a New York City hustle n' bustle way. The lighting is fine, you can people watch at a busy intersection, the seats are comfortable, and it's a low-key environment. I've sampled some of the baked goods. I wish they still carried biscotti and purchased their croissants from someone other than Balthazar (croissants are average). And don't pick up the bar they sell, it's just too damn dense. Service is top notch; staff are genuinely positive and upbeat. Beverage-wise, you have made a very good decision. I love to bring friends here for a soul soothing caffeine fix. read more

I love Birch! I always get a Soy Chai and it tastes great every time. There are only a couple of tables here, so if it's prime time, you'll most likely have to wait to grab a table. This is my go to place if I'm meeting up with a friend in the city for coffee - it's convenient and close to the PATH. read more
