Went back after a few years of avoiding this place, and everything was asstastic. The brisket sliders were to die for, as were the deviled eggs, hush puppies and fried chicken. Disappointing dinner. Arrived on a week night when there was only a single bartender to wait tables so service was sparse and slow. I ordered the potato skins ($6) with a side of brisket ($4). I got 3 small (4" x 2") potatoes - which were tasty - but each had only 2 tsp each of sour cream and a tablespoon each of tiny brisket cubes. When I complained about potentially paying $4-$5 for the brisket, the bartender apologized and brought out 2 slices of brisket. The brisket was quite tasty, and if I come again, I would try the brisket tray instead. My husband had the Cubano sandwich - Which was generous but so-so. Pickles are really good. I would recommend as a bar with appetizers but there are better places in town for dinner. We liked this place much better (before they re-branded as Bird and Rye) when they served pot-pies and had bigger portions. read more

From the Bay Area and usually worry about finding gluten free options when traveling. Appreciated their vast amount of gluten free options. Staff was very knowledgeable about allergies. Probably the most bland chicken sandwich I have ever eaten in my life. The waitress was out of the beer I wanted and just brought me a random one. She also told my girlfriend that the cherry cider was really similar to white claw(it wasn't at all). The waitress never came and asked if we needed or anything or if our food was food. This is not a restaurant. It's a bar that, like many bars, serves food. Its specialty is fried chicken, but no matter how much you order of it - and it can come in large as well as small quantities - it's a bar snack. Like most fried chicken that has the word "buttermilk" in the description, it's a very heavy, crunchy coating. (There's a Nashville Hot option, but I didn't take that.) The chicken pieces are fairly small. Judging from the bones, the thigh piece looked as if it had been cut down a bit before cooking. The pieces fully cooked and fairly juicy in a match for the crunchy coating, despite that the food took only ten minutes to arrive. Pretty good for a snack. read more

Chicken was RAW. Pink in the middle. Collard greens tasted like seaweed, brisket was as thin as bacon and was as tough as beef jerky. Salad had rotten avocado on top of it. I was really excited about this place, and i really don't want to be the one to leave the crappy review.. however it needs to be addressed. i had ordered a chicken thigh burger and when i had received my order it was completely raw. when i called the restaurant the person on the phone didn't seem very concerned with the fact that i had received and almost consumed raw chicken meat but assured me she would "let the cooks know for the future." Never offered me a new meal, and i could not receive a refund through the restaurant because it was ordered through door dash. SUPER disappointed for a meal that looked and sounded so good, turned out so wrong. :( I hope they can fix this for the future and learn from mistakes. read more

I'm a huge fan I have Nashville style hot chicken sandwiches. I've eaten a good share of them all including our fave the "crack shack" in LA . This little Ashland spot does some serous justice to the hot chicken sammy. Everything from the bun to the brine to the pickle is awesome: If was gonna be picky it would be minute details like : more pickles... and ... well that's it. The other items I ordered were equally as good - I did add a little smoked Maldon flakes to the mac and cheese - but I like stuff aggressively seasoned ... overall - this place is a gem- and you should support them- by ordering doordash - since there's no In person dining right now . The most amazing chicken, and the Buffalo burger is to die for ... add avocado and cheese and I can't think of a better burger that I've had. Excellent French press coffee as well (although their tap offerings are pretty extensive). Most options are gluten free or can be made that way. Service was non-existent unless you knew one of the girls working there. They had us come up to the counter to place our order. Didn't bother to check on us at any time. We were instantly disappointed when we saw sauce all over the Nashville hot chicken that we ordered. There are two different kinds of Nashville hot chicken one that can be saucy the other is still hot but it's dry and cooked into the fried breading. I guess it's my bad for not clarifying, but I also feel like it could be stated on the menu or explained by the server. The sauce was so heavily applied that it soaked the bottom of my sandwich so I ended up just eating the chicken with a fork. The chicken was very tender and had both dark and white chicken. I liked the pickles and the collard greens were decent. Our service was prompt as there was only one other person dining in, however, it seemed like it took a long time for our food to come out. The restaurant itself has a cool vibe, I liked the bar setup. The plexiglass between the benched tables was good for Covid protections. I would have gone with 3 stars for the overall experience, but after both of us experienced stomach issues afterwards, we were even more disappointed. read more

During these crazy times, we are all thinking of our favorite local businesses and looking for ways to support them. In addition to getting take out as often as you can afford, one friend suggested that it is a good time to get out there and write reviews so the businesses know we are here and people looking know where to go! Bird & Rye is on the top of my list of places I want to support. I not only love the food, but I also appreciate the atmosphere, the events, and the people who work there. It feels like a towney bar in all the best ways... small, dark, cozy, welcoming and almost always filled with people I know or feel familiar. The menu is spot on there isn't a bad thing you can order. It is all delicious. Fried chicken Nashville style is what they are known for and be warned it is certainly spicey! Surprisingly the salads are also amazing so do not think it is just a fried chicken place. There is so much more. They are open for take-away and I highly highly recommend it! This little hole in the wall on 2nd street is easy to find if you know its there, but may be easy to miss for the untrained eye. I was early to meet a friend (about 430 pm on a Thursday eve) and the place was empty except for one table watching the Mariners - and someone else. After a bit of hesitation I found that I needed to order at the bar, and that menus were up there too. So don't just sit down- take charge of your dining experience! Ambiance was great! The food was super delicious & cooked perfectly. Been coming here for years regularly. Service? HORRIBLE. Had to go to the waitress 3 separate times to get a water refill? Etc. We literally felt invisible as people around us got served & we got ignored. It was super obvious that it was on purpose. Basically, we were completely ignored once we got our food. It wasn't over crowded & others were being waited on. But we were not even asked if everything was okay or if we needed anything else. Had to request dipping sauces, as she offered zero choices. We had to ask for our check, so we could finally leave! VERY surreal....Then a 2nd worker was rude to me & a 3rd wouldn't look me in the eye as I tried to get a "small to go" box. I was told rudely "Our boxes are one size". The whole thing was awkward & felt personal. Then when I went to pay the bill & when the "leave a tip" option popped up on the screen, the 2nd rude bad vibe worker was Watching the screen like a hawk in a passive aggressive act of pressure. Guess I will avoid this place until these rude uncool lazy people are no longer in charge of running long-time customers away. Been going here regularly since they 1st opened. The fried chicken at Bird & Rye is the best fried chicken I've ever had in my life. Being from Oakland I'm lucky enough to have places that make amazing fried chicken nearby. Bakesale Betty's has a bomb fried chicken and jalapeno slaw sandwich, and then, of course, there's the gold standard Brown Sugar Kitchen. In fact, at BSK, I once saw a man eat an order of fried chicken (1/2 chicken) and waffles, then go ahead to order a second half a fried chicken. If that guy ever shows up at Bird & Rye, it's likely to be a 2-chicken order. It's that good! I ordered my chicken with a side of slaw, vinegar vs. mayo style and it was the perfect sharp and tasty addition. Also - siracha ranch dipping sauce with the chicken? Not sure how the chicken could get any better but this puts it over the top. Don't forget a cocktail. A rye old fashioned was my choice, but if you're not a fan of the hard stuff, they have plenty of beer as well. I also have to say, huge kudos to the Smithfield's owners who transformed Pub & Pies into Bird & Rye. I loved Pub & Pies, but the move to start Bird & Rye is pure gold, giving the Ashland foodie landscape something new and extremely tasty. read more

We've eaten at Bird & Rye before and had an ok (just okay) fried chicken sandwich, burger and steak fries (not my favorite). Recently we ordered a whole fried chicken and mac n cheese. The chicken was like rubber, and the mac n cheese was the worst I've ever had (not exaggerating). It was gummy, mushy, horribly overcooked, almost cold, not cheesy, not creamy, with some very depressing soggy little potato chip crumbs on top. Rolls seemed to be from a bag from Safeway. It was like a meal cooked by a twelve year old. Just awful. We agreed it was in the top three worst food experiences we've had in Ashland (which is saying something -- we've been here a long time).
