Awesome that the Rogue Valley finally has high-class Mexican cuisine worth going out for. Don't get me wrong, I like a chile relleno or a street taco as much as the next guy, but I've also been to Mexico City and am loving that we have a restaurant worthy of CDMX here. Kahlo is the kind of place where you order something you haven't had before -- something a bit out of your comfort zone. It'll be delicious. Aguachile? Try it. Tuna "carnitas"? Great for a group. Although do ask about spice levels if you're pepper-sensitive. The servings are very large, so the prices a Kahlo are more modest than they seem. Think sharing so that you can try more stuff. This can be a restaurant for a group spluge, but it can also be a great night out for two. My favorite was the soft-shell crab tacos, a bit of Mexican-American crossover I've never seen before. They were delicious, super-crispy and well sauced with guac and salsa macha. But everything was great. Cocktails are really good too, particularly the mezcal ones. Wow, this is first time back with the new owners ( same as Tekkamaki) ad the food was amazing. I had 2 tacos, brisket with fried crispy tripe and a tempura fish. They were both incredible! As you can see from my photo the were quite large. As an added bonus they were only $10. Let me be clear. They were mostly around a year old and were a 2, then a 5 then a 1 then a four then a 2 then a 5 ....in other words they were shoe inconsistent. It was pretty slow on a cold Tuesday night. First time in. Decided to try based on reviews. Great experience. You just need to step out of your traditional Mexican restaurant expectations - Kahlo is a great departure. The atmosphere was definitely a huge improvement over previous tenets. We ordered margaritas, which my wife said were one of the best she'd had in a long time. No traditional chips and salsa were served at sitting, however, you were served a small cup of a rich chicken broth and fine noodle soup that was outstanding. Quite a surprising treat. The menu is very creative and a few familiar Mexican dishes are there. However, this is a very creative menu, and I would encourage everyone to explore the more unfamiliar dishes. I was especially impressed by the presentation and garnishes; they paid a lot of attention to presentation as well as they decor of the place, and it pays off by making it feel special. Kind of worrisome when you go in at lunchtime and this huge restaurant is empty. The design is a little mixed matched for my taste. I also didn't find the seating to be comfortable. Unfortunately, the food was average at best. My meal was also not very warm, error in what I received vs ordered, and on the blander side. My suggestion would be to streamline the menu. Kahlo comes as a recommendation for it's unique Mexican fusion food. Themed around famed artist Frida Kahlo, her presence is all around the restaurant. The menu takes me back to my time in Mexico City. I order the pulpo (grilled octopus) which comes with potatoes and asparagus. It was sizzling as it came out. It was very rich in that it was drenched in butter. The asparagus and potatoes were all seasoned the same as the pulpo so it was a bit one note. The pulpo was also a bit on the chewy side and could have been cooked longer. I don't mind either and overall was a good meal. They have an extensive menu of unique fares. Eclectic interior. A friend introduced me to Kahlo Exotic Grill, and we stopped in for a late lunch around 2:00 p.m. on a Thursday. I arrived a little early to look around and ended up chatting with our server, Cecilia, before my friend joined me. I've been visiting Cabo San Lucas for 20 years and have always been curious about certain traditional ingredients, especially mole and nopales. Cecilia explained that the mole is homemade in the restaurant and offered with a variety of dishes, much like salsa roja or salsa verde. For those unfamiliar, nopales (nopal) are cactus paddles. In Cabo grocery stores, you'll often see someone dedicated to preparing them, trimming the spines and scraping the surface. I've always wondered how they're used in authentic Mexican cooking. Cecilia described several ways to enjoy nopales, either as a side dish or incorporated into something like a taco. When my friend arrived, we were seated immediately and had the restaurant to ourselves. Cecilia brought out two bowls of chicken broth soup just like the Yelp photo. It had good flavor and included a little pasta for texture. I ordered the chilaquiles with relleno and mole. To drink, I chose a tamarindo (tamarind juice). Our meals arrived in about 15 minutes. (FYI: They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day.) My dish was beautifully layered in a large, shallow bowl. From the bottom up: a layer of small cheese-filled peppers coated in fried egg batter, a layer of corn tortilla chips, a fried egg, another layer of chips, and thinly sliced chicken breast on top. The presentation was impressive. The food was excellent, a wonderful variety of authentic Mexican flavors and textures. The mole had a rich, earthy red chile flavor reminiscent of chipotle but milder. The rellenos were crispy on the outside with a mild pepper and cheese filling inside. The tamarindo (non-alcoholic) was somewhat similar to root beer but with a subtle, lighter difference. It's made fresh onsite and finishes with a small amount of tamarind pulp at the bottom, clearly not a canned beverage. Interesting and unexpected. I enjoyed it. Dessert was a true work of art. It's called "buñuelo" but is much more than a pasty: Two scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with fruit preserves, separated by a light, flaky waffle pastry and surrounded by raspberries. We went to celebrate my son's 13th birthday and she ensured we all had a great time. But the food, the food is amazing!! We started off with coffee (cafe de olla) a very smooth coffee with hints of cinnamon. My son had the hot cocoa (Champurrado). Both came with a side of a Mexican sweet bread. The sweet bread was soft and warm; super fresh! Our appetizer was the smoked salmon slices with capers (Salmon carpaccio). The main courses: a cactus leaf stuffed with ham and cheese (nopales rellenos) and the beef mole. These came with a side of rice, beans, and homemade tortillas. The tortillas are colored naturally. The new owner is Jesus, the owner of Tekkamaki Sushi, one of the best restaurants in Medford. The new version of Kahlo's menu incorporates the innovative flair of Tekkamaki with traditional Mexican flavors. The menu is huge, and it includes a range of dishes from breakfast to tapas-type dishes to larger entrees. This is definitely a hidden gem! When you walk in, you'll instantly notice the artsy vibe to the place. The owners did a great job with the whole design and concept of paying homage to a famous artist that is Frida Kahlo. The dishes we tried were delicious. They're not your typical Mexican style dishes. I'd describe it as healthier, artistic Mexican culinary flair. The disb I had was the creamy chipotle chicken. We were excited to try this place. However it was not as expected. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The place is beautiful. We ordered 2 parrilladas (40 each) , coconut shrimp and drinks. The Parrillada "Mar y tierra"? Was not as described. No octopus or fish were found in this messy food. Parrillada means grilled meat or seafood. This dish s no t what you expect. Mmmm was not impressed, menu over priced, quality of food subpar, no flavor and the service not on point for the price you are paying. Had the Parilarda Frida, Ribeye Tacos, Ribeye Steak and Pastel Aztec. The meats had no seasoning, the steaks look like something you buy at a grocery store that was marked down, the chicken was flatten dried and sauce poured over it asparagus were thin and had the bottom whites making it chewy. Bread basket was delivered with some sort of liquid sauce that was bland. Drinks seem to come out 2 at of time when 4 people ordered drinks (use a tray). Had to ask for a second round of drinks and there was never a check back (should check back after 2 bites) only when we were done. I would say the only things that was good was the drinks and tortillas. Probably will not be returning for dinner, maybe the brunch's are better. read more

They've been open for TWO DAYS... generally, I avoid places until they've been established for a month or two. I can expect opening days to be full of chaos, order mishaps, delayed times. Against my better judgment, I stopped in on Day 2 of their grand opening (only after stopping in at Downtown Market first to discover they are no more ). Kahlo's fed me my own words though. I am so glad I stopped in! First, they are not associated with Frida's in GP. Kahlo's ambitious menu is glorious and I am SO excited for their future. Ingredient combos I've never even fathomed, despite my growing up in a Mexican household. This was new, yet, familiar. Amazing fusion of flavors. I tried their Huevos Cazuela - which came in a skillet. Two eggs over gruyere, peas, and sautéed mushrooms. So light and delicious. Bonus if you pour their housemade spicy sauce (Mexican heat level 4/ American 7). Great heat/flavor balance that doesn't linger. Wonderful roasted flavor. The only thing that I felt disjointed was their Italian tomato sauce in the complimentary bread basket. I offered a suggestion. We had great conversations and they were receptive to suggestions. Again, it's a new place and feeling out the menu to see what works and what needs modifying. If they're able to keep it this fantastic on Day 2, that's a testament to the amazing training of staff. I gave this place three tries before I posted a Review in hope I was just catching them at a bad time. Each visit has progressed into the negative stars. The service here is friendly, upfront. Once you are seated that changes. I did pay attention to other tables and high tops are prioritized with service and timeliness. I have never waited 20 minutes to receive a bowl of beans and chips. And at that getting the chips cold. I orders the buffalo wings and received 6 wings which were coated in sugary BBQ sauce. The only thing consistently favorable is the atmosphere. Lured by the ads running daily on TV, the 5 of us decided to give them a try. I was drawn by the Kahlo name. Also I thought they were connected to the Frida's in Grant Pass - but they are not - too bad, because Fridas' was 5 STARS! We came in early for lunch and were the only customers. The menu was extensive, however, it was black and the white print was about 10 pt (average is 12-14 pts) and it was extremely difficult to read without good lighting. Most of the selections were in Spanish and not enough translation for us "gringos". I had to ask the server to translate. As a result, we stuck to familiar items like tacos and salads. I'm sure their Mexican specialties are delish but it was difficult to decide what to order without a good translator. The name of this new downtown place seems to promise an artistic take on Mexican food. The menu is extensive, ranging from brunch to Mexican favorites to steakhouse options. A bread basket with herbed garlic butter was an unexpected offering that came to the table as we perused the menu. We started simply, ordering nachos. The exotic fusion here appeared to be ballpark and refrigerated leftovers from yesterday's barbecue, all heated unevenly in the microwave. Glistening cheese sauce and pickled jalapeños that both looked to have come from a can at a concession stand covered thin chips. The refried beans nestled in the interior of the plate were flavorful but cold and the nicely charred carne asada was tender but bland and not fully reheated either. It was a delight to find a new Mexican restaurant that reminded me of the food in Yucatan, which was different from the usual fare. I met a friend for brunch. We started with Margaritas. My tamarind version and her mango margarita, with chili salt around the edge, were some of the best we have ever had. Although they don't seem to have a gluten-free menu, there are many choices if you avoid gluten. We split two entrees: a delicious omelet with multiple cheeses and mushrooms and a beet salad with candied walnuts and feta. The omelet was tasty, and the beet salad was fresh and bright--a great combination. It was hard to decide on the breakfast or lunch options. The omelet and salad combo covered both. Sorry, we didn't take photos. Our waitress was a delight, smart, and knowledgeable. The only downside was the choice of music piped through some rather tiny speakers, which was a bit grating. Came for early dinner on a Saturday, not busy. Not a good choice for vegetarians. Almost nothing on the menu without meat except for a portabello burger and some vegetable sides, not even the tacos can be made vegetarian. They were out of almost everything I tried to order from drinks to soup to burger buns for the portabello burger. Food was not tasty. Service was friendly but extremely slow-- I mean, close to half an hour for first drink, and nearly an hour for the food to come to the table.
