This is a culinary delight! As you may or may not know I'm GF. In some parts of the US it's hard to find a restaurant that is accommodating, being that it's not a choice I am always on the lookout for restaurant that are not only accommodating, but have it marked on their menu. It shows that they know what ingredients are in their food. Ashland is usually good, but I loved how focused Bird & Rye was on having most of the menu GF. This place is 5 stars in that regard. The bonus is that they have fried chicken. I've only found one restaurant in the US that offers that (in NYC). It was amazing! Crispy and tender. We tried 1/2 Nashville style and 1/2 buttermilk. Both fabulous! We tried the Sirachi ranch (fabulous) and BBQ sauce for dipping (also good, but the server wasn't clear if it was GF. Note; rye is in it and I thought that distilling got rid of the gluten. Haven't had a reaction from booze yet:) I only tried a bite this way. On to the Mac and Cheese. Yum! Topped with potato chips. Nice crunch factor. I love that it tasted great and it's vegan and GF! Great side dish to go with the chicken. The baby kale salad was great, but way too much dressing. We decided to bring it home to mix with a lb of greens to dilute the dressing. Kale, radishes and bacon. Really great combo. Can't wait to return! read more

This place is usually solid, so there is that. Tonight, however, I was shafted! This is one of the only places I Doordash from, because it's generally consistent. Not tonight. Literally 1/2 the amount of chicken, 1/3 the amount of salad (minus everything but greens with long stems), and 1/2 side hush puppies. Totally lame. A total ripoff. I am so disappointed in what should have been a reliable dinner, and instead was an overpriced snack! Lame. read more

Extensive gluten free options (which everyone will enjoy). Fried chicken and bbq pork are my favorite. There are lots of interesting sides to go with it, so it's hard to choose. Food is great but service took super long .. they took an hour to get our order and then forgot a whole entree for a person. Offered to bring food out 20 minutes later in accommodation, in my opinion the meal should have been accommodated for free. Disappointed because I have always been a fan of this place. A small BBQ restaurant with a few tables and a big carry-out business. The BBQ brisket and wings are terrific. The entrees are not greasy as sometimes in other BBQ joints. Hush puppies were cheesy and slightly crunchy and the sauce was great! Brisket was Juicy and the BBQ sauce was savory and smooth!!! Desiree was great! Fantastic vibe! Only Been around a month. Used to be one of our go to places.... To say it has gone down hill is an understatement. Just ordered up some lunch, paid, drove down and picked up BURNT chicken. Obviously burnt and the exterior color is Black. Dry and Crisp all the way through the one bite I took. Absolute garbage, how could anyone box up burnt chicken and send it out the door? It's black! There was a special with Wing/Breast fried chicken plate with a side and house made potato roll for $12! I was actually worried about how inexpensive it was, but it was really high quality food executed extremely well. Perfectly seasoned, super juicy buttermilk fried chicken, incredible collard greens loaded with delicious pork. My wife got the mac n cheese which was also good but not amazing. We started with the pimento cheese hush puppies which were ridiculously tasty and rich with a yummy dipping ranch(?). The only thing about the place I didn't enjoy was the completely disconnected music playlist that was super bizarre ranging from Metallica to Taylor Swift. I really wanted this to be a good place. Small inside but kinda cozy. You order at the bar which is wierd. And then they deliver to your table. But don't expect meals to come out at the same time that your friends' meals come out. And there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. I can't imagine what happens on a busy night. My best friend and I ordered take out when we were staying in Ashland. We both ordered the Mac and Cheese side based on the photos here, it was good, but not as great as the pictures made it look. Ordered take out last night. The staff were slammed with take out and delivery orders thanks to Covid-19. Still, they couldn't have been more pleasant and apologetic. The pies that the previous establishment baked we're above and beyond delicious. I ordered the brisket recently with Mac n cheese, and collard greens. The brisket seemed like they were pre-cut pieces of deli meat from Albertsons. Grossly textured collard greens that were mostly the stems chopped up. The Mac and cheese lacked flavor and seemed to rely on the crushed potato chips on top for that. Such a strange decision to get rid of those delicious pies for this crap. read more

Getting to know Ashland. Stumbled upon this spot yesterday. The only local I know said it's great. After a good walk in Lithia Park, I stopped in for a buttermilk breast and a side of mash with gravy. Chicken was wonderful. Juicy, crisp skin and the flour was well seasoned. The mash tasted like it needed salt and I was quite surprised but the gray tasted bland. Now, I have to disclose that radiation has damaged my taste buds, but mainly I can't eat spicy food. I can't say for sure if the gravy is bland or if it's just me. The mash did need salt (I make myself mash often) - my Auntie told me years ago, on Thanksgiving, the secret to good mash is butter and enough salt! I'll be back - the chicken was spot on and I'll ask about the gravy. Oh, the homemade pickles - too spicy for me now, but they were good! (I just drink water till the burning in my throat goes away) Maybe they could put some sweet bread and butter pickles on the menu! read more

Best fried chicken I've eaten in years! Like most of the menu, the chicken is gluten free and tastes better than any chicken I've had cooked with gluten. The mac and cheese is also out of this world. My girlfriend and I were passing through Ashland and decided to take a chance on Bird & Rye. This place is more of a bar than a restaurant on the inside but it has a nice vibe. We were both really hungry so we split the brisket dip sandwich and the chicken sandwich with the batter Tennessee hot, plus a side of mac and cheese and steak fries. The chicken sandwich was NEXT LEVEL. The chicken itself was juicy and flavorful and just spicy enough to add a little kick. The breading was nice and crunchy, and along with the coleslaw and pickles made for a great combo of texture. Everything on the sandwich was just the right amount with the right flavors. It was spicy and saucy and sweet. I'm pretty sure that it was the best chicken sandwich we've ever had. The brisket on the brisket dip sandwich was also good, but not exceptional. And nothing else on the table was really special. The mac and cheese was ok, it was a little bland, my girlfriend liked it more than I did. The fries were basic steak fries with sriracha ranch which was good. The gravy for the dip sandwich was missing but we got it quickly after asking about it. It wasn't great and maybe came out of a jar. Both my girlfriend and I agreed that this would be a 3.5 star rating if not for the fact that the chicken sandwich was amazing and we really liked our server. The price seemed pretty fair for the kind of food your getting. The portions aren't huge but again, for something like the chicken sandwich, worth it! If we were to go back we would definitely go exclusively for the chicken and coleslaw, and if we had some extra to spend, a cocktail or cider. read more

Not the best service. Split the half Nashville fried chicken and a few salads. Took 45 minutes for food, and they didn't offer to bring salads first. The menu said the chicken came with pickles and sauces, but it didn't and when we asked the waitress made us feel dumb - saying we had to order that when we placed the order. But the menu said it was included. Then the chicken wasn't Nashville so we had to send it back, and it seems like the Nashville style was just straight cayenne and butter.
