I got the tender combo and man it was delicious!! Arguably better than canes. Their laynes sauce is pretty much canes sauce. The tenders are good and juicy and you get to choose spicy or mild. I love the spicy. I did the laynes sauce and gravy. Tea might be better at canes bc it seems here they just get gold peak tea. Service was fast. Dining space was great. Would definitely be coming back again

Spicy chicken tenders, and fries!

Imagine a random day, working near a former "party school" and all you want is good food, no crowd, no fuss. Somewhere before Texas State University is Laynes Chicken. The friendly server recommended the spicy chicken. Let me tell you, everything in this establishment was spotless clean and fresh. The Chicken was well flavored, perfect crunch and softness of the chicken tenders. The fries are good, but I've had better of course, but honestly the chicken and the sauces are simply perfect. Also this hungry Demi blogger-blogger got his food in exactly 6 minutes. Go here and be nice to the workers. It is the cleanest place I've been to in Thai side of town

Heard about this place through a Youtuber and it did not disappoint. My girlfriend and I drove 40 minutes from San Antonio and it was so worth it! The vibes were awesome inside and poked fun at Canes because Laynes came first and has basically the same menu. The service has similar quality service as Chick fil a. The best part? The chicken is 10x better than Canes and they also had spicy chicken tenders as well. Go check it out!

Was it worth the 40 minute drive just for the food, why yes, yes it was. This place was on point with the flavor, crispy texture, sauce, EVERYTHING was amazing. The staff was friendly and very quick. You had all kinds of sauce choices. The decor is great and the place has a lot of funny comments for their competitors. This has to be the most underrated place yet. So unfortunate I didn't hear about it sooner! I My only complaint the potato salad was kind of average but still good. And is that even a complaint? Take the drive! Try it out!

Layne's - San Marcos

Ohhh...how I've been hearing about the original chicken fingers from Layne's based out of Aggieland College Station. This location I visit is in San Marcos near IH-35 which made it very convenient to get off and grab some lunch so I can be the judge between Layne's and its competitor Can...well it almost rhymes with Layne's! First the service, the restaurant was very clean for it being the lunch hour and the staff immediately acknowledged me and told me that they will take my order in a minute. I ordered the 5pc chicken finger combo about half regular and half spicy which was awesome because I was able to try the best of both worlds! I gave the lemonade a try, a little tart for my liking so I replaced it with Coca-Cola instead. The food finally arrived, took a bite out of that buttery Texas toast and oh boy crispy and buttery goodness I wanted another! The fries were nice and crispy and salted evenly. Now for the big test, the original Layne's chicken finger with their Layne's sauce, dipped and took a bite. Crispy on the outside, packed with all white meat goodness on the inside and the Layne's sauce is a great compliment as it does have a hint of spice in my opinion, I was very impressed, only con is the size of the chicken finger, 5pc combo with 2 sauces (yes I said sauces, other than Layne's sauce) is $14.29! Not too shabby. The atmosphere is very plane and modern than its competitor no red at all mostly maroon, black and white interior. Overall I highly recommend you give Layne's a try, I can't wait to stop again on my way back from Austin!

3 Finger Meal with Extra Layne Sauce

Wow!!! I've had Layne's Chicken Fingers on my radar for a few years now and i'm glad I finally decided to give it a try. Sorry but there's no competition when it comes to Cane's and this is coming from a Raising Cane's LOVER!!! I ordered the 3 Finger Meal and everything came out piping fresh! The fries were sooo crispy, airy and salted perfectly and the chicken was seasoned and had crunch throughout each piece!!! I received nice sized chicken finger pieces and the texas toast was thick and buttery!! When it comes to the sauce i'd say it's very similar to Cane's but Layne's sauce had more of a peppery seasoned bite that I liked. I also went down the line and tried a few of their other sauces including buttermilk ranch, gravy, bbq sauce and honey mustard. The buttermilk ranch was absolutely delicious, the gravy tasted like a powder gravy mix, the bbq sauce tasted like sweet baby rays and the honey mustard was kind of lacking in flavor. I plan on trying the jalapeño ranch in my next visit! With my meal it came with a drink and I got the Freshly Squeezed Lemonade and in my opinion it didn't taste homemade but maybe as if it came from a carton. It was super sweet and didn't have that lemon tanginess that I was hoping for so i'd probably try a sweet tea next time. The food was amazing and I wish I had a location more local to me lol but i'm glad there's some locations in Houston! I ordered through the drive thru and received top tier and welcoming service as well. Overall, I will definitely be returning and recommend this restaurant to those who love a good crispy chicken finger!

Chicken tenders

Food tasted really good and was crispy! I really like that the food was seasoned, we got the spicy tenders and original tenders and the spicy ones had a really good kick to them. I really liked the laynes sauce and thought it was similar to canes. One of the reasons why we tried this place is because one of our family members has a sesame allergy and cannot eat canes, so we're really glad that this is a great alternative to that. And in my opinion I honestly feel like it is better because they a bigger menu and the food is seasoned!

Originators, NOT imitators... like someone else I know...

There are meals you enjoy... and then there are meals that make you pause mid-bite and question…read moreevery other fried chicken decision you've ever made in your life. Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken? Yeah. It's that kind of place. We went for the chicken sandwiches and I need you to understand--these were not just "good." These were ruin-other-places-for-you good. Crispy, juicy, perfectly seasoned... the kind of sandwich that makes you immediately start planning your next visit before you've even finished the first one. Now let's talk sides, because they did not come to play. Coleslaw (mine): fresh, balanced, actually flavorful (which is rare because let's be honest... slaw can be a gamble). This one? Solid win. Fried okra (my friend's): I am extremely picky about fried okra. Like, I side-eye most of it. But THIS? Golden, crispy, not a hint of that weird slimy nonsense. It was so good we ordered more to take home... which tells you everything you need to know. And because we clearly make excellent life choices, we shared a chess pie for dessert. Rich, sweet, buttery perfection. What really tied it all together though? The service. Warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being over the top. The kind of service that makes you feel taken care of, not rushed. Bottom line: Every single bite was worth every penny--and honestly, I would've paid more and still walked out happy. This is one of those spots that doesn't just meet expectations... it casually exceeds them and then sends you home thinking about it later like a crush you're not over yet.

My husband ordered the wicked dog and loved it. I had a bite and can see why. I had the chicken strip combo and it's the best I've ever had. The chicken strips were juicy, flavorful and large. We substituted the mac and cheese and it was so good, it ruined all other mac and cheese forever. It was that good. Creamy, flavorful and plentiful. Our cashier, who was very friendly, also threw in extra fries, which were good. We ordered a gold bar pastry, which is kinda like a brownie with other stuff in it, including coconut. Incredible flavor! And my husband ordered a banana pudding, which, you guessed it, was heavenly (no photo, sorry). Plenty of comfortable seating. The restaurant was spotless and it's right off 35. My wife likes to try potato salad but she is also quite picky about it. After discussing it with the employee- she decided against it since she said they didn't make it in house. But when we got our food brought to our table- there was a side of potato salad! She explained we didn't ordered it but the employee- same person who took out order- said the owner wanted you to try it and it was on them! Very impressive customer service! Not only was the first woman very accommodating as we tried to figure out what to order- she also recommended sauces and we really enjoyed the Sucky avocado ranch she said was her favorite. The chicken strips and the queso were the stars that day. The chicken strips were very juicy-- not at all Ike regular fast food strips. The queso was the same topper to the Filthy fries and mac and cheese. It was very good- def not from a can. The owner was very nice- he came out and chatted with us a bit. Told us a lil bit of his history with the business. That's what stood out to us- how friendly and generous each employee was there. Definitely recommend. Definitely will be back.

If you've tried their drive through before, you know it's not unusual to be asked to pull around into the little mini lot closest to Hunter Rd to wait. Your wait's going to be a bit longer when you order fish (drive through or inside) because like most chicken places they fry it when you order it. Friendly employee brought out our order, and a quick peek told me the order was correct plus they'd included lemon wedges without our requesting it. Last time the tartar sauce was in one big side serving but this time we had several individually packaged shots and again, it was sufficient. When we got in the house I popped the (still very hot) box in the microwave to stay warm while we tended a few critters before plating up. We GORGED on the perfectly crispy fish with lemon and tartar sauce; there was still enough to share small bites with small friends and have the last 1/3 cold the next day. Mr R had some of the hush puppies. He's more partial to savory style than sweet, but we ordered knowing most of them would be a treat for visiting deer that evening. Their okra's done in batter, not seasoned cornmeal, and it's good. Decent flavor produce and not lost in excessive dough. The price went up but we agree the *family boxes* are still absolutely worth it. Just-fried crunchy catfish feeding a minimum of five adults of average appetite for $7/head _after_ tax? Bargain.

Over the course of several visits, I have encountered the same unacceptable behavior from managers Kelsey and Crystal. Their conduct has consistently been deplorable. On multiple occasions, they have been rude, dismissive, and unprofessional while interacting with customers and staff. Most concerning, there have been instances where one of the managers walked away in the middle of assisting customers, leaving situations unresolved and creating unnecessary frustration. Talking down to fellow coworkers, causing a negative atmosphere. This pattern of behavior demonstrates a lack of accountability and basic customer service standards. I cannot in good conscience support a company that allows this type of management. As a result of these repeated negative experiences, I have decided that I will not be returning to this location. I believe it is important for this issue to be addressed, as it reflects poorly on the business and impacts customer trust. I hope appropriate steps are taken to ensure better management and service in the future. Sincerely, Pam
