I went here for dinner on a week night, it was busy. I ordered Birdie spills the tea which is one of their less-boozy cocktails & delicious. Deanie's cornbread is so cute & moist! It comes in the shape of corn and the butter is even molded in a corn shape too. The rice flour-battered mushrooms are a great shareable dish- it's fried extra crispy which I loved. The prime skirt steak frites was juicy and came with lots of fries on the side. The smoked kielbasa is a sausage with smokey flavor. For dessert we ordered the chocolate layer cake & mango rice pudding. The chocolate layer cake is a large, decadent, super moist slice and perfect for any chocolate lover! Big open space restaurant located in or around the Bergamot Station area in Santa Monica. The space is clean and fun with plenty of exposed brick. It's hard to put this restaurant in a box or classify it. With matzo ball soup on the menu, there's an obvious Jewish influence there, but the rest of the menu has modern and traditional takes on various menu items that feel both exotic and familiar. So I guess...New American? Regardless, there are lots of delicious sounding items on the menu to order including a daily special where they don't like to have the items on the every day menu, but are made available at least once a week. I came in late on a Saturday night by myself (I was leaving a late day birthday get together and was on the way home and hungry). They were kind of near closing time, so I asked the host if it were still possible to get seated. They accommodated me at the chef's counter. Luckily, this is typically my favorite place to sit. I ended up ordering the daily special or the blue plate - Duck Parmigiana - confit duck leg, pressed with garlic confit and all the cheese, then breaded, fried, and served with vodka sauce and basil. Really delicious. As you can probably guess, the dish was rich but didn't eat too heavy. I love chicken or eggplant parmigianas so this dish was right up my alley. I also ordered the matzo ball soup. Also very, very delicious with a healthy amount of dill. Light and comforting at the same time. I also ordered a cocktail - the Herbal Bomb - to help wash it all down. I was too full to order dessert there and by the time I was finishing up, I was one of the last people in the place so I wanted to get out of their hair, even though I felt no pressure to leave. But I felt like I couldn't leave without ordering their "World-Famous Rose Petal Pie", so I ended up getting a slice to go. I'm so sad to hear that Birdie G will be closing down at the end of the year but glad that I got a chance to check it out! From their introduction, I think they serve modern American food with an eastern European influence and using fresh California ingredients. Started off with the mushroom fritti which was quite yummy! You really can't go wrong with fried mushrooms but I liked the chunkiness of each mushroom pieces with it still being cooked thoroughly. The rosemary was a nice touch to add some extra aroma. The caesar salad exceeded my expectations! I loved their version of the sauce and how generously tossed the fresh veggies were. More importantly I loved how much black pepper they incorporated because it really brought out the mixture of flavors. For mains, the skirt steak was delicous! It was super super tender and packed with flavors. The pickle chick cutlet was alright for me because I'm not a huge fan of chicken breast, but I do appreciate how it was chewy for the most part. For dessert, the rose petal cake was aesthetically pleasing. Strawberry mousse with red jello. The crust was yummy with the crunchy and flakey pretzel bites. For drinks, I enjoyed the Persimmon Me Timbers with the fruity flavor. The Don't Be Corny was a little too strong for me; corn flavors were very faint and more like corn flakes than corn. We've been to Birdie G five times now, and it has never once disappointed us. Last night was no exception--absolutely superb, just as it always has been. The wait staff is consistently attentive, and every dish feels like it's made with care. The market salad was incredibly fresh, the ravioli was outstanding, and the chicken with polenta was amazing--we actually remembered how good it was two years ago when we ordered it back then, and it was just as delicious this time. Desserts are a must here. The chocolate cake is decadent and the date Bundt cake is truly special. It's heartbreaking to know they'll be closing their doors at the end of this year. Birdie G has been one of those rare restaurants we could always count on for an excellent meal and warm hospitality. Our friend was visiting from the East coast and our goal of showing her some of LA's great restaurants unfortunately fell short. Among the small plates, we enjoyed the adorably presented cornbread and king mushroom fritti with its light fry and springy texture. Delving into the mains, the baja striped bass's presentation was probably the most pedestrian and unappealing fish dish I've seen yet - a couple of small pieces of filet overly doused in salsa verde and several whole small potatoes on the side. I was genuinely shocked that this cost $42. The birdie burger was quite juicy, though its seasoning and toppings failed to pop at all on our palates. Birdie G's is supposed to be known for their desserts and the "world famous rose petal pie" was pretty awful. Its gelatinous texture was outright unpleasant and I lost interest completely after just one bite. Luckily, the massive chilled chocolate layer cake was solid. Regarding hospitality, our server was mediocre at best. Inattentive and seemingly poorly-trained as he didn't even ask us if we wanted anything else to drink after picking up our completed first round. In fact, an Asian gentleman (general manager?) had to come by to take our food order as the server was busy elsewhere... Suffice it to say, the overpriced food and lackluster service left a poor impression and I'm disappointed that we failed to give our friend a quality dining experience. read more

I first have to say, the service was unbeatable. My server, Kelly T, was friendly and very helpful answering my millions of questions. She made great recommendations too! I sat right in front of the kitchen. It was really nice to see food being prepared right in front of me. I got the olives, tomato salad, trout dip, burger, and crème brûlée. Honestly, everything was delicious and prepared perfectly. The burger was a perfect medium rare, and I love that they offered to split it for me before serving (I split it with a friend). The drinks were also really nice and made with interesting ingredients. I forgot the name, but my favorite was a margarita with a Sichuan chili spice. Delicious! There is valet in front of the restaurant, or free parking in the lot at the end of the road. Tried Birdie G's for the first time and had such a lovely experience! I cannot wait to come back and am sad it took me this long to try! Modern Jewish cuisine - and I love that they incorporate seasonal produce and influence. The creamed corn kugel was so smart and delicious. I loved the peaches and the open face tomato sandwich was INCREDIBLE. I wasn't wowed by the brisket though, but everything else was fantastic including the rose petal pie and cocktails. A Fantastic Meal... Until Dessert Ruined It Everything was great--the cocktails were phenomenal, the snacks were amazing. We had the Buffalo eggs, cucumbers, and fries, and every bite was better than the last. The drinks? Perfection. We were having a fantastic time... until we made the mistake of ordering dessert. The so-called Rose Petal Pie is not a pie. It's a 1970s jello mold trying to pass as a "modern" dessert, and for $15, it's basically a very expensive bite of air. No real substance--just a wobbly, forgettable, overpriced letdown. It looks pretty, sure, but I didn't come here for an art installation. I wanted a pie. So, by all means, come for the drinks and snacks. They're absolutely worth it. But do yourself a favor and skip the pie. read more

The cornbread was a standout in both flavor and presentation (so cute), and everything else had good flavor but didn't necessarily leave a strong impression. I was mostly disappointed with the service. Our server seemed checked out and forgot that we ordered drinks, so they didn't come out until our third dish was arriving. When our meal was finished, I asked to have the remaining half of my pickle chick boxed up. The busser, or whoever packed my leftovers, flipped the dish upside down so all of the toppings were smeared on the bottom AND they put the leftover, unwanted bits of our crudite tray (like stems and leaves and half eaten bites) underneath my chicken cutlet. Gross! Why would I want to eat the stem of a radish on my chicken cutlet? All around I did not get the impression that the staff was well trained or organized. read more

We went to the bar and ordered drinks. The bar was standing room only and very busy. I ordered a Sky's the Limit. Our drinks were very good, I just wish there was more breathing room at the bar but this place is popular for a reason. We ended up waiting 20-30 minutes for a table. I didn't really mind because we had time, but just note this is not the place to go when you have a tight schedule. We were seated outside but there were heaters so we stayed warm and it was pretty quiet which I appreciated. Our waiter was super nice and helpful, great service. I partly came here for the fried pickle chicken but they were sold out. They only make 14 a day, which hopefully the restaurant increases. Hopefully we can try it next time. We started with the BEETS WITH DELI FLAVORS. This is yellow beets with smoked trout roe & horseradish cream. It was very light and refreshing. 10/10!! Will definitely order again. RICE FLOUR BATTERED MUSHROOMS- delicious. Not too greasy and perfect. BROWN BUTTER & MATZO DUMPLINGS- this was my favorite thing we ordered. 8 Nights with Guest Chefs a Hit once again! This is the third year we have gone to the 8 Nights Celebrations and so far this year is the best ever! We loved the set menu with dishes alternating between the two different guest chefs. We loved all of the dishes and some were amongst the best we ever have had at Birdie G's (where we have dined many times!). The ambiance was festive and the opportunity to spend some time with each of the guest chefs made the experience truly special! The servers were on it! We will be going back on Thursday for two different guest chefs and we are even more excited now than we were already! I am excited that they keep innovating and keep serving up such great food! Not in a bad way whatsoever, but a new flavor profile for chicken cutlet she wasn't used to. The drinks though!!! A seriously delicious dinner in a large and open-concept type of dining room. They specialize in Middle Eastern and traditional American flavors and also they are a big fan of dill because it is literally in almost every dish. They have a very large dining room on one side and a large bar with additional seating on the other. Parking in the area is pretty easy as they offer valet out front or it's also not hard to find free street parking, which is what we did. Our server was very polite and did a great job. We started off with the Bashed Cucumbers, and they were really delicious. Again, it had dill, but that is OK with me because I am a fan of it. Next I ordered the Matzoh Ball Soup because I've only had it a few times in my life and had heard this is one of the better versions. I will say it was very good and I would definitely order it again. Second dill dish. For my entrée I chose the Lamb a la Saless and it was really delicious. The fenugreek added a great crunch to the bottom and this marked my third dill dish. Overall a really great dinner with great service in a great part of town. My second or third time here and lemmeeee tellll youuuu. If you are a pescatarian like me pls think twice about coming here to eat. Or drink tbh, one of the worst extra/filthy/ dirty martinis I have ever had (also one olive as a garnish to a $18+ drink...?) . We split the bass, I love a buttery white fish. This fish came out and I am still upset with myself for not saying anything. It was incredibly unappealing, red and brown, and dry (yet slightly slimy?) and dense and with so much pesto type sauce on top it was drowning. I ate a few pieces and immediately knew not only was it visibly unappealing but also totally and utterly disappointingly gross. (Also, also, for $45 you'd expect a little more than two small pieces of ((overly sauced)) fish but I was also relieved I wasn't going to be wasting all that much since I could not physically eat more than a few bites without feeling a little queasy) . The cornbread was the saving grace, I was so hungry. It was tasty and cute to look at. All in all, an incredibly overpriced bougie spot. I rather spend money at any other of the $$$ spots in the neighborhood. -wish I took the time to read the reviews before this latest visit as it sounds like quite a few people feel as if this place has not only gotten a little bougie pretentious, but also deteriorated in quality and lost itself along the way. We also got the dill one (I think it's called Not a Big Dill), which was delicious as well. We got the flat iron steak (cooked medium rare because any other way to have a steak is a crime), summer squash, hungarian cheese ravioli (delicious), cobb salad but not really a salad - this one is made of snowpeas, the pickled chicken - wonderfully fried chicken, olives, cornbread.... the food was all amazing. They also have this rose petal jello marshmallow cake dessert thing that is a must. And whatever ginger mint tea they have is also delicious. Service was great. We arrived at our reservation time, and they didn't quite have the table ready yet, so we got some cocktails and waited around for a few minutes. They also have a couple delicious mocktails on the menu. Overall, glad to be putting this place on our food map. Parking: They have valet for $16 (As of summer 2024), or you can park for free in the lot at the end of the Michigan, at Bergamot Station. They say the lot closes at 10pm, but when I went to move my car around 10pm, there were still a lot of cars in the lot and what sounded like a party going on at the restaurant in the area. My husband, brother and I came here on a Sunday night in December 2023 to celebrate my brother's birthday. I'd made a reservation online a couple of weeks before coming. Birdie G's is an established and popular restaurant in Santa Monica, on the border of West LA. There is a lot of street parking near the restaurant, we were able to find a spot right outside. When we came in, we were seated immediately and brought menus and water. After looking at the menu, we were recommended on how many dishes we should have, and ended up ordering seven, excluding dessert. My husband and brother really enjoyed this restaurant. I didn't love it but it may be that I am not a big fan of Jewish food. My favorite dishes here were the beets and the matzo dumplings. My brother and husband really like the creamed greens kugel, which the staff had explained was like a mac and cheese. Overall, I think everything was excellently made and was of superior quality. We saved room for the rose petal pie for dessert, which was a perfect dessert. It was light and not overly sweet, with a strong rose flavor and creamy texture. I'm not sure I'll come back here but would recommend Birdie G's for anyone looking for a modern Jewish restaurant in Santa Monica. read more
