We waited for about 30-40 minutes and nobody came out to take any drink orders. :( The inside of the place is cute and I would love to come back and sit at the bar area and watch the kitchen. The food was excellent. I loved the timing of which the food came out. It was perfectly paced. The tables in the back are spaced out. You could sit with other people at a picnic type table (no thanks) or grab a tiny table. There were three of us so they put two "two" tips together for us. The tables were a bit unstable and didn't really fit together. It was a bit awkward. We each got a glass of wine and with tip we each spent around 75! Overall I would rate my experience a 3/3.5. I have been here in the past, but this was the first time trying the prix fixe menu. Definitely recommend getting to Birdie's right when it opens as you will have to wait in line a bit to order at the counter. Getting there at 5PM, we were able to order by 5:30PM on a Thursday. One thing I do really appreciate is that even though it is a prix fixe menu, they are able to easily accommodate you if you are gluten free and not everyone in the party has to have that dish gluten free. Highlights from the Aiello's menu were the garlic bread, caesar salad, and Maccheroni ala Vodka. We sat on the outdoor patio and there were tons of fans which is helpful for the Texas heat. Initially, the service was good and the plates came out in a timely fashion. However, our table was abandoned when it came time for dessert and we waited 30 minutes after the last course before we had to physically get up and find someone to ask them what was taking so long. We waved our hands several times and no one came to our table. Since it had already been about a 90 min experience, we were thrown off on the delay and lack of attention to our table. I would have expected the dessert to be on the house at that point, but since you pre-pay for a prix fixe menu, maybe that is not an option. Overall, it was a 3 hour experience so please take that into consideration when planning to go here. I am not sure if or when I will go here again. However, Birdie's has a great wine list and I am hopeful they will one day open a wine bar so that I can try the wine without the $200+ dinner as there are better options in Austin at that price point. read more

Then were seated in what was effectively a wind tunnel with no less than 12 industrial fans blowing about, in what would otherwise be a very nice mild temp night. Had to ask three times for them to finally fix the issue fully. We were served a fixed menu (Italian pop up) which comprised a sad half bowl of chick pea soup, an equally sad and small bowl of salad, a pasta dish that my partner and I had to share, and a decent piece of fish. Overall the ambiance was bad especially with the wind and the dishes were small and bland. Overall we paid $340 which included 4 glasses of wine total. Counter service is confusing as it is otherwise a relatively nice restaurant and atmosphere, but you have to wait for 30 minutes to order before sitting down (this is not an indication of how many people were in line, just that it is not fast at all). Food and drinks are very pricey - for just myself it was well over $50 for just a main and a drink - my friend spent over $90. We split the turnips, I ordered the halibut. The turnips were surprisingly small and not all that tasty. The halibut was alright, but not creatively flavored or anything that was memorable. The front receptionist said around 4-5 items will satisfy a party of 2. We had another event to go to so we didn't want to be stuffed. We ended up ordering the minute steak and the bolognese. Both were cooked very nicely (al dente and medium rare). However the price point was steep for the portions and quite frankly the ambiance. I don't like the option of tipping at the beginning when we didn't even receive service yet. It felt like an obligation rather than merit. Sitting down, you had the option of inside or outside (outside has more seating). Birdie's winterproofed the outdoor patio so don't fret to come here during the wintertime. We waited for about 15 - 20 mins, and was able to order wine while we waited. After, the front desk will give you a number and you can pick what ever seat you like. The inside is small, but they have a large outdoor space. Its winterized very well when it's cold out. If you forgot to order something, never fear! There is QR code at your table, where you can order more food and wine. The food is super good and doesn't take too long. My husband and I shared a bowl of bolognese and the minute steak! The Bolognese was absolutely delicious and the minute steak was very tender. We were still a little hungry after, so I recommend ordering more if you are sharing. They were able to split the bill in the weird ways we wanted - thank you! They had a tasting menu and we did that for each person with all the add on's for the table. The food was unbelievably good. The flavors were to the perfect proportion and of the highest quality. You can taste the richness, freshness, and sharpness to all the flavors. The pasta was so fresh and the sauce so buttery and smooth. The salad so fresh and crunchy, the lemon zest ratio to Parmesan in the Cesar salad was perfection. The broccoli with Burrata had a remarkable crunch with the perfect amount of heat. The tomatoes in all the dishes so fresh perfectly portioned with the garlic and shallots. The title of 2023 Restaurant of the Year by Food & Wine magazine is what drew us in to Birdie's. Obviously, the expectation was high. After a long day of shopping we made our way to Birdie's which is tucked into a neighborhood. They are counter service as they mention which was ideal for our casual outing. There was only one group in front of us when we entered so not much of a wait. Seating you have to find yourself in the patio or inside. Luckily an indoor table opened up while we ordered. Keep in mind the menu changes daily. They are right when they say to order multiple plates. The appetizer we had was petite and the entrees were too. Honestly I told the waiter we were going to get ice cream after the meal when he asked if we wanted dessert. I started with a bowl of olives along with a cheese and baguette selection from their snacks list. A great collection that had us enjoying wine and the outdoor ambience. My dog also enjoyed the smallish remaining piece of cheese as well! The next course was their small plates; the green salad was amazing. It had a vinaigrette over leafy greens and thin sliced red onions and some pulpy citrus. This was then followed by a creamy orecchiette with capers. I could have eaten a bowl of this! The main course was their Chicken cacciatore which was served over polenta. This was so delicious however the portion was large and I had to pause halfway through and admit it was coming home with me. It was a slightly confusing layout and experience: we waited outside for about 50 minutes (can order beverages in line and pay as you order); then went inside to order and pay from the food menu, then went to the outside seating/eating area to wait another 30 minutes for a table. As we were waiting for an empty table for a party of 7, we saw many empty, available tables for 2 while parties of 2 sat on the larger tables for themselves. Unsure if they were given those tables or chose the larger tables themselves, but seemed like an inefficient use of time and space. Once we were seated, the wine and dine experience dictated serving each dish one at a time, resulting in a 2-3 hour dining experience. I really liked enjoyed the care and creativity that was put into the branding and overall feel of this place. It felt very homey, like you were dining in someone's backyard! The flavors of everything that we tried were great, but the portion sizes were really small and I didn't feel like the price tag was justified. We were sitting outdoors, and were sat right next to the dumpster. The stench was unbearable and honestly ruined my entire dining experience. We asked to be moved to another table on the other side of the patio farthest away from the dumpsters, and I STILL was able to smell it! You order inside at the desk and then you can find a seat any where inside or outside. The inside seating is a bit limited and kinda humid in general but the patio is amazing. We got lucky to avoid a long line on a weekday evening; worth noting that you order everything at the counter before you sit down at a table, so the upfront piece takes a bit longer/ you don't have much time to look over the menu. Enjoyed a bottle of the Hondarribi Zuri (love that the wine list includes short 1-word descriptions to help in the decision-making process). When driving from San Antonio to Dallas earlier this month, my brother and I stopped in Austin to have dinner with a friend at Birdie's. Birdie's definitely has the vibe of a cool hot spot - great food, great outdoor seating (with heaters for winter), natural wine, order at the counter, lines if you aren't there right when they open, and warm and very welcoming service. I'm glad we stopped by. We shared: the green beans with chickpea and truffle dip; roasted beets with ricotta, pears, and Marcona almonds; the beef tartare with pecans, sonora, roasted garlic, and carta di musica; the orecchiette with broccolo fiolaro with parmesan and black pepper; the red snapper with potatoes, Pernod, sherry, and saffron; the minute steak with smoked cabbage, Hakurei turnips, and peppercorn sauce; the Heilala vanilla soft serve with blood orange agrumato; and the warm Sicilian inspired chocolate chip cookie. We tried over half the the menu. Everything was good, but I would say the highlights were the tartare and the steak! The tartare had outstanding flavor (and I sometimes find them bland and unremarkable), and that thin crispy cracker (the carta di musica) on the side!? Amazing. The steak was so incredibly well cooked and tender - and that smoked cabbage?! I thought I'd had cabbage in every way I could - but this was new and surprising and delicious. We also tried several of their wines by the glass - such a fun and interesting selection of natural wines. The menu includes a great single word description which was a fun way to help us choose what to try next! All the wines we tried were very much enjoyed! Ahh-mazing! Not only was everything delicious but portion sizing was just right! From the small bites to the entrees, each dish that showed up to the table was wonderful! They "course" the table the right way too so you have time to enjoy each thing before they bring you the next. They had a great wine selection too so pairing a glass with bleach course is made simple ( the team also knows about the wine they are serving so don't be afraid to ask questions)... the place was lively and fun and everyone was so nice and friendly. I came here on Thursday night and it was amazing! I will definitely be back. I was unsure about the ambiance at first because it is a pricier place, but you order at a counter before being seated. However, the servers brings you drinks while you wait to order the food. Once you order, the courses come out pretty quickly and the servers were very attentive. We tried both of their orange wines "by the glass" and loved them. For 3 people we ordered about 6 dishes. I believe they have a rotating menu, but some of our favorites were the rockfish, the cantaloupe, and their peach and yogurt salad. It pains me to give this place 2 stars bc the service model is way outdated. They definitely can do better. On the weekends it's typically 1-2 hour wait, no reservations allowed. Typically there's a huge line that starts forming at 4pm on the weekends. No parties are allowed to get seated ahead of ordering, even if you're in the front. If your entire party isn't there to stand in the god awful wait.. no dice. No Yelp queue ahead of time, nothing. There's also no guarantee that food won't run out by the time you get to the front (which has happened multiple times). There's also only one person taking orders the whole time, they're also do wine service right there at the register. I get it if it's to control capacity but if that's the case just allow reservations. Although the service and food is great once you get seated. The journey to get the food, if you're not ordering wine in line, is frankly miserable and cold in the winter and very humid in the summer but it's all outdoors. That being said the food never disappoints but it should not be an emotional rollercoaster to get seated or order. No signs of this improving anytime soon either. It's such a shame because the food is so good, no one reasonable has 3-4 hours to wait in line, to eat and wait for the food to come out like this. The price is really steep for the lack of ambience as well. In this day and age, they can deploy some better restaurant management strategies to ultimately give their patrons a better experience. We came with some friends on a Tuesday around 5 pm and had a great time. We shared the bread and cheese, the carrots, the beet salad, ragu pasta, steak and snapper and rice pudding. We also got a free vegetable soup from the kitchen! I had heard a ton of hype about this place so we decided to check it out. we almost left when we saw the line but I'm so glad we didn't. We were able to order within 25-30 mins and the wait outside was enjoyable with great wine to order and warm heaters. The food was truly incredible- every single dish. The pasta was the star of the show and we also loved the wine selection. Every server brought incredible energy and enthusiasm. Service was a bit slow at times but we didn't mind because everyone was so nice and it was a busy night. After reading some of the negative reviews- it feels like some people don't "get it". If you're looking for a traditional dining experience where you can make a reservation and sit right down, go somewhere else. For me, as a busy working Mom, this dining experience was a reminder to slow down and just enjoy the night. We were there for two hours in total and we loved every minute of it. Such an amazing addition to our neighborhood! This is a unique concept and done very well. If you've read any food publication over the past couple of years then you've heard of Birdie's and you know what? They.Are.Right. Just go. Have some wine and meet a new friend in the quick moving line. Order everything you want to try, at least one thing from each section of the menu so you get a good feel for the experience. Enjoy your meal and some more wine because you should definitely rideshare; parking is not abundant and the neighborhood requires a street permit. I am perplexed by this restaurant. I love their employment model where the responsibility of compensation is left with the employer and management, as it is with nearly every other job and industry. I support health and wellness fees. Every dish I tried was delicious. The staff was gracious and pleasant. But holy shit the portion sizes are laughably small. I guess you COULD share a plate of the delicious and slightly sweet bolognese pasta or the tangy snapper with chickpea salsa but you'll leave this place hungry if you do. If I was trying to design a restaurant to get you to drink as much as possible and eat as little as possible, then that's Birdies. Maybe I'd feel differently if I hadn't waited in line for nearly an hour to get seated and could just walk in and treat this place like a more casual wine bar...but it definitely didn't have that vibe for me. I hope this place sticks around and earns some of the casual vibe this place was designed for as it loses some attention from the restaurant scene. read more

Birdie's is always a pleasure to visit. Their seating style is first come first serve with ordering taking place at the counter before you find your seats. Most recently we went at 5:00 with them opening at 4:30 and waited probably 20 minutes to order and sit. If you're able to go this month I highly recommend the snapper with carrot butter sauce. Carrot butter sauce has ruined my life for the better because it's something I need to master making now on my own. Delicious! read more

OK, let's start with the star rating - 12. Yes, that is right, a twelve out of five. Now to justify that. I went with a party of 5 for a celebration, and we had an inside track being close with a server there (Cass - best ever!). So that may have helped the overall experience for sure, but this review is for the food. What came out of that kitchen was nothing short of amazing. Each bite was a complete rounded experience that moved me deeply. I mean it. Perfect balances of flavor and texture in my mouth. Nothing over the top, but everything complete. So, I am generally frustrated at "shared menus" since I never know how much to order. We ordered at least one of everything. Yes, everything, and there was nothing that I would not give 12 stars for. There are many good photos and descriptions in other reviews here, but my standouts are: * Sweet Potato - I do not like sweet potatoes and I voted to pass on this item, but the table said bring it and it was incredible. I wanted more. * Butternut Squash Soup - This was a life changing dish. I have never been moved by a bowl of soup, till last Saturday night. * Sea Bass in a lemon beurre blanc sauce - Just, Oh my god I am literally loosing sleep over that meal.
