I'm sure the haircut is great, but the barber seemed like I was bothering him by stepping into the shop. I sat down, told him what I wanted, then asked if he had a straight razor for my neck. I was told "no" with more attitude than I care to deal with, and I left. One star for poor customer service. Jameson has been my barber since about a year ago. I go there monthly almost like clockwork. He does a very good job consistently giving me a nice cut. My hair is a bit wacky and usually takes an attempt or two to get it right. He did it right the first time, my wife complimented my new doo, and I've been going back since. Plus, he's totally cool when I bring my pup along with me and even asks why I didn't bring him when I don't! He's a good sport. Walk ins only. This is my first 1 star review, ever. I've been getting 2 haircuts a month ever since I joined the navy. So that adds up to just over 11 years of 2 a month haircuts. So I'd like to think I know a thing or 2 about haircuts. I've had good ones and bad ones, and unfortunately, from this guy, I got a bad one. I went in on a Tuesday about an hour before closing. Clean place, sparsely decorated. Didn't really have the barbershop smell. Ol boy comes out of the back and sets me up in the chair. Asks what I want. I tell him "a 1 on the sides, enough off the top to even it out, basically what I have now, just shorter" He started in on the roughest haircut I've had outside of bootcamp. Clippers pulling hair, bumping my head and neck with the guard, half slapping hair off me. So after 5 - 10 minutes, we're finishing up. Trims around the back, ears and sideburns. Trims my eyebrows, probably the best part of the haircut. Start looking over his work, and I have a mother effing high and tight with 2 inch hair on top. I look like a blond Bert (Bert and ernie). I have an almost mohawk, an almost faux hawk. I. Look. Like. A. Douchebag. Basically, I paid 20 bucks to have to come home and have my wife take jabs at how I look and shave my head in the bathroom. If you're in the market for a fresh, stylish cut from a professional barber, you've come to the WRONG place. Upon entering his empty, sparsely-decorated shop, Jameson curtly remarked "cash only" without giving me a second glance. I decided to give his manners the better half of the doubt based on what I can now attest are fraudulent Yelp reviews. He took very little time asking what I'd like, before forcefully running clippers randomly through my hair. After a few minutes, when a real barber might ask how the length is looking or what to do with the sideburns, he paused and started griping about how irregular his business had been. When I tried to empathize, his chair-side manner only worsened. With every stroke, he clubbed my skull harder with the clippers and tugged at my hair with what I can only assume was a dirty comb since there was no barbicide in sight. Also, not once did he use scissors even though I asked for textured length on top. Worst...haircut...ever! read more

It's everything a barber shop should be: cash only, walk-ins only, no fuss. Usually there's no one else waiting when I step in. Jamieson is way more experienced than the fresh-out-of-beauty-school stylists at the "cheap cut" salons. And he gives a much better cut than the cheapo barber shops. He'll give you the cut you ask for. If you ask for a 1 on the sides, he'll give you a 1 on the sides. If you tell him "what I have, but shorter," that's what he'll give you. Every single time. I've been coming here for almost 2 years and it's the most consistent haircut I've ever gotten for under 30 bucks. Jamieson is an authentic small business owner, committed to the little piece of PB outside his door. He keeps a close eye on what happening through the window & knows this postman by name. It doesn't got more local than this. And let's not forget that he's is a riot. I always leave with my cheeks sore from laughing at his stories. Jameson, like the fine whiskey which shares his name, is an absolute diamond in the rough of a barber amongst the chaotic, bumper to bumper mess that is East Garnet. I don't know if my excitement for this establishment stems from the direct proximity to the Silver Fox, or that I don't have to look at posters of other dudes with better hair than me (like at Fantastic Sams). This is my favorite place in PB to get a haircut. I've been coming here for about a year and I've always been happy with Jamieson's work. He knows what he's doing and gets the job done quickly. The haircut is cheaper than many of the stylist places you can go to and higher quality. A lot of times I've walked out of barber shops frustrated that my haircut looks so much different than I expected, but I've always been pleased to get exactly what I wanted here. Jamieson is a really friendly guy and great to have a conversation with. There's usually no more than a 10 minute wait and I'm usually in and out in 30 minutes. Came here for a #0 skim fade blended into a 6 top. Had high hopes due to yelp, but I now find myself questioning the legitimacy of some of these reviews. Jameison tells me he is finished and I can honestly tell you the cut was a #3 no blend poor fade. I ask him to make it shorter and he tries, however the cut suddenly got rough after I made it clear he didn't go short enough. Jabbing the buzzer at my head with each new stroke, I knew it was time to leave. I thanked him for his efforts, paid and left. Never again for me. 0 barbershop atmosphere and 0 understanding of barbershop terminology. I left feeling cheated out of 20 bucks and felt/looked like I was already 10 days into my cut. After moving here from the east coast, it is tough to find your favorite place for all the basic things you need. I found Birdrock by simply looking for barbershops in Pacific Beach, it had the best reviews of any shop. It has since moved to a new location and there has been to change in the phenomenal service that Jamieson offers. He is one of the most friendly people I have met out here. My boyfriend is very particular about how he likes his hair cut and neither one of us are ever disappointed. It is a very clean, and well decorated shop, perfect for any dude to relax, but also very comfortable for the girlfriends (like me) to sit and chat while their man gets a fresh cut. It's also nice that Jamieson always is actively interested in what's going on with the both of us. I highly recommend Birdrock to anyone in the area. :) read more

I wanted to like this place (the barber is nice and its near my house) but the haircut was disappointing. He doesn't use scissors and the clippers doesn't have a vacuum attached to it (I had little pieces of hair everywhere near my neck and in my shirt). I brought a picture of what I wanted, told him some things to do (such as not touch the sideburn area) and said I wanted him to clip some kind of texture on top. He didn't really listen to me and I even had to remind him about the top of the head after has was done. The haircut looked nothing like what I wanted. I think he just goes into clipping mode and gives the same haircut to everyone because he doesn't look at the shape of your head or any physical feature that makes your head different from everyone else. Just busts out the clippers and goes to work. I honestly had a better haircut at great clips a month ago. I'm trying out new barbers/haircutters since I got tired of cutting my own hair for the past 10 years. I will continue looking. read more

I went here to get a hair cut just a few days ago and I got a good one. If you're like me, even your favorite places may be hit or miss. You either have to wait forever for the one guy who can cut your hair well, or take a shot at one of "the others" who cut hair and hope it comes out well. Jamieson owns this place, was friendly and asked me questions that helped me tell him exactly how I wanted my hair - often you don't get that at a barber shop. I recommend it. And to mimic that other guy's comment, but Jamieson does encourage you to bring your dog. Next time I go, I'll walk my dog and get a hair cut at the same time - kill two birds with one stone. Jameson, the owner and sole barber for the shop, is an awesome dude. He cuts well and is very friendly. However, my only gripes are that: 1) it's pricey. $25 for a standard cut 2) he sometimes doesn't cut it exactly as you ask. If you ask for a 2, you might end up with a 3! Sure enough, when I'm living in San Diego, I get my haircut once a month without exception. Jamieson is the best, great attention to detail, very friendly. I went to Lefty's first down the street, was told they dont take walk-ins and could see me in two weeks. Crazy. Im a guy. Looking for a guys haircut. I found Birdrock and waited maybe 10 minutes and got a really good quality cut without the attitude. Im not sure on credit cards but he isnt really expensive.
