We chose this place as we were passing through Tucson at lunchtime between different morning and afternoon venues. This place is located in an artsy / entertainment district close to downtown. When we went, there was road construction nearby that made getting here more challenging. Once we located it, the next challenge was parking. We visited around noon on a Saturday. There are no large parking lots, so you have to find something on-street. We ventured a couple of blocks off the main street and found something. However, the signage wasn't really clear on whether you had to pay on weekends or not. We accessed the parking app via a QR code, but it told us that our space 'was not available', despite the fact that we were in the space. A guy leaving the space next to us confirmed that parking *was* free on weekends, so we trusted that and walked to the restaurant. In retrospect, I think the app meant that we did not need to pay, but 'not available' seems a bit vague for that... The restaurant is located on a strip of old storefronts that now house restaurants, record shops, etc. There was a lot of pedestrian traffic out front, including a homeless guy asking for change. The atmosphere was sort of a loud, slightly cramped dive bar. I don't mean that in a bad way, but that was the vibe. The music was loud - none of it was familiar but I didn't hate it. I guess my point is that if you are looking for a quiet spot for lunch, this is probably not it. We initially were offered a table on their covered patio. We left one person there while sorting out parking, but when we came back they had a booth inside so we grabbed that instead. The patio seemed shaded and semi-comfortable, other than a loud barking dog. We browsed the menus and ordered our food. We all got half-and-half combos (soup/salad or sandwich/soup). The only issue was that the soups came in a bread bowl. I was able to finish my soup, but felt bad about not eating more of the bowl. If I'd had the option, I would have gotten a plastic bowl. The salad was pretty big, despite being only half. I finished most of it. We ended up having sufficient leftovers from others such that we took them back to our hotel (a relatively short drive) and finished them the next evening. All the food was tasty. This wasn't what I was expecting, but I'd consider eating here again given the right circumstances / group. read more

When first entering it's a very small booths and bar but if you continue down the hall past the bathrooms they have a big open outside/indoor patio seating area! Great if you have kids or pets with you So the food. Honestly some of the best sandwiches I've ever had Their combo with the bread bowl and half a sandwich is hard to beat to be honest. A little bit of both worlds there I recommend eating the bread bowl first because it's more filling that you think and you can take the sandwich home They have a wide range of options for everyone And even offer a picky kid friendly sandwiches like PB & J, might sound boring or normal but that was the best PB & J I've ever had The staff is very nice and helpful They run the bar also and will bounce between the bar and your table So if the bar is busy I'm sure it could take a bit for you to order at your table Great food Great environment And friendly people Highly recommended! read more

Bison witches is a hole in the wall sandwich and bar on fourth Avenue that serves really good food. Always try to park in the back if you can't find room in the front because this place can't get very busy quickly, especially when the kids are at school. Great thing that we always get when we come here is the half sandwich and bowl of soup which comes in a bread bowl with different choices of soups. Our favorite is the Wisconsin cheese. It's just absolutely delicious and our sandwich to go to SD club sandwich. Service is always been great at this place as well. Make sure to stop by on Sundays to get their bloody Mary's. read more

I was craving soup, and what's better than soup in a bread bowl? We tried the clam chowder in a bread bowl, a side of the cream of broccoli, and the half sandwich/ soup combo of turkey sandwich and chili (bread bowl on the side). The portions here are massive and I think you get a good amount of food for the price. My bread bowl soup was filling and tastes great for $10, and my wife could barely finish her half sandwich and a few bites of chili. We both had leftovers. A 4th Ave staple! A great spot for happy hour, and consistently good massive sandwiches. Everything comes with a bag of chips and is relatively customizable. Classic bar feel, quick service, and great variety in options. We often go in for happy hour and an appetizer. All soup is served in bread bowls. And the bread for sandwiches is very fresh. Lunch with my girlfriends to celebrate a birthday, was a very nice visit at Bison. My first visit here. A typical bar setting inside and out. Small booths inside with bar seating and hightops outside and a few steel picnic benches. It was a beautiful day outside so we decided to dine and visit outdoors. When we arrived at 11:45 it was quiet but by the time we left the place was very busy. Also smoking is allowed outside in their bar area so for us it was time to go. Our server was very nice, helpful, and patient with us. Our food was delicious! Three ordered the 1/2 sandwich and soup which also came with chips. It was a lot of food. Two ordered the clam chowder which was fantastic and one ordered the chili and she said was delicious. They all loved their sandwiches too. I ordered the cobb salad and it was fresh and delightful. I appreciated the dressing on the side. One down side, not a lot of parking so you have to park on side roads, and hopefully you will find a parking meter that shows details on the screen. While they had plenty of vegan options my veggie hummus sandwich lacked flavor & I had to add a ton of Russian mustard & other spices to make it interesting . My friend at the table also commented on lack of flavor . My avocado was barely visible , sliced thin and just didn't match the giant bread slices . I went , tried it . Second experience here. Food is crafty and they can accommodate any substitutions etc. Lots of sandwiches, excellent soups and salads. Fun and funky interior with some TV's and wall art. Parkin on the street is metered but you can park on the side streets also metered or behind close to a park. Excellent service both times and we will return. I've been coming here for years, usually for takeout, and always loved the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo. My go-to was the Miss Priss on white bread (with lettuce instead of sprouts), a cream of broccoli soup bowl, and salt and vinegar chips--all of which were consistently delicious. This time, I decided to build my own sandwich with white bread, chicken breast, pastrami, melted cheddar, lettuce, and honey mustard. Unfortunately, it was drenched in honey mustard to the point of being inedible. Even after removing the bread, there was so much sauce left that it made me nauseous, and I had to throw it out. I recommend asking for sauces on the side to avoid this issue. Since it was takeout, I couldn't exchange it. I came here because my partner knew of the location, and wanted me to be try it. We were encouraged to pick our own seats, and we were so lucky to visit when we did, as it got filled up quickly! Our waitress was very kind, and started us off with some water before we ordered nachos for starters and a BLT sandwich for myself (the sandwich comes with a side of bagged chips). I was a fool to think I could consume both things in one sitting, because I didn't know how HUGE the portion sizes were. Even someone who eats a lot may have trouble with an appetizer and a main entree. Bison Witches delivers on hearty portions and satisfying flavors. I really enjoyed the cheese that came with the nachos, as it tasted natural and not store bought like some movie theaters sell. Even my partner, who normally dislikes nacho cheese, ended up really enjoying it. The BLT tasted good too, even though I only had 2 bites, but it still holds up after heating it back home. I would come here again, but EARLY! I can see stopping by in the heart of the afternoon can get really crowded. But that's the price to pay for some quality food. read more

I ordered the potato soup that the waitress recommended. It cane served in a sourdough bread. It was great. Also ordered a side of potato chips. My friends ordered sandwiches. Those sandwiches were huge. They can feed two people. The server was patient and kind with us. The establishment was small but they have a patio area in the back. And a second bar. This place does seem seasoned. And needs some updates on furniture. But the food makes up for it. I would come again to try a sandwich. read more

First time going in because we saw that the place had great reviews. We were seated at the back bar, and about 15 minutes later we finally got menus and placed our order. It took around 25 minutes to get our food -- just some nachos and a sandwich. During that time, the table behind us helped the server hold one of her trays because she was spilling salsa. When the guy told her he was just trying to help since it was spilling on his shoes, she snapped back, "No, I got it. It's fine." He apologized, saying he was only trying to help. He wasn't intoxicated and even had his dog with him. My boyfriend then told her, "No, you're spilling it," and she immediately gave him a dirty look. About 15 minutes later, we finally got our food -- a to-go order. Several items were missing, the wrong chips were included, and the extra side of pork we ordered wasn't there because they were out of chicken. We also ordered a Mountain Dew to go, but it tasted like watered-down Sprite mixed with Coke. The drink even had a brownish tint, like the soda dispenser hadn't been cleaned in a while. When we politely mentioned that the Mountain Dew didn't taste right, the server threw a fit while walking to the other side of the bar and said, loud enough for us to hear, "Fuck this shit. I don't have time for this." Keep in mind, the bar was extremely loud, yet we still heard her clearly. We spent about $50 for nachos, a sandwich, and a soda to go -- and that experience was completely unacceptable, especially as first-time customers trying to support a local spot. I highly do not recommend going back based on everything that happened. I genuinely hope management either hires more staff or lets go of certain employees with bad attitudes. Both of us have worked in restaurants and fast food, so we understand how stressful it can get -- but one person's poor attitude can really bring the whole place down. We might give it another try during the day, hoping the daytime staff has a better attitude than what we witnessed tonight. Also, who was the tall, dark-haired guy walking behind the bar, pouring his own drinks, and chain-smoking cigarettes? That's really concerning -- especially if he's not an employee. If I owned a bar, I definitely wouldn't let someone pour their own drinks while staring at paying customers. read more

The soups are so good, today I tried the Boston Clam Chowder, now I'm not a seafood girl, but it was nice and tasty, only a slight fishy taste. I went most recently on a Friday during happy hour (3-7) and had a delicious pre- theatre meal with a friend . Excellent service by Savannah , she was fast, friendly and very efficient. We split the pretzel bites that came with hot cheese and stone mustard.. very delicious. (Idk if they are new but my friend and I both locked eyes on them on the happy hour menu and had to have them ) . I had the beef and Brie half sandwich with chips.. definitely my fave sandwich there! They were out of white bread but luckily all the bread is delicious. Loved my happy hour drink, really hit the spot. Really this place is good any time! Great bar, lots of seating, it has a patio out back and they do have parking out back too.. make sure and check the rules tho! And I guess they do split checks now which is good to know! We were seated in the covered patio where there was a bit more space for comfort. Overall service was good. I had The Grinder and jalapeño chips and was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the sandwich was. Anywhere I go, I prefer a good Italian style sandwich. This one comes with mustard which isn't usually the case at other places. And although I'm not a huge fan of mustard, I must say it complemented the sandwich perfectly. My party also ordered the chili con queso which came with fresh sliced jalapeño. My husband went to U of A, class of 01'. He always wants to come here when we are in town. We sat in the new area in the back. I liked the vibe. Service was awesome and the beer selection is great. This is the first time however, we were both somewhat underwhelmed by the food. I got the half soup, half sandwich. Although the bread that the bowl is made of it amazing, the potato soup itself was average. I prefer a smokier potato bacon soup, not sweet with carrots. It's also about 5 full spoons worth inside. Wah, I love soup. My half sandwich was a wildcat. The roast beef and roasted turkey in the sandwich was a minimal amount compared to the thickness of the bread. A few slices at the least. And the sauce ratio was off. I mostly tasted bread and sauce. Luckily I really liked the rye bread. We both felt it was just skimpy meat for the $20.50 price tag. I would recommend getting the sauce on the side. My favorite part of the meal was the bread which made the bowl and the toasted rye on my sandwich. read more

The house-made bread is just as tasty today as my first visit 20+ years ago and it's nice that the menu has remained relatively unchanged. My go-to sandwich is the Miss Priss with Parmesan peppercorn instead of honey mustard, and a half sandwich is more than enough for a meal. If you're with a group, I highly recommend sharing the nachos- they're excellent. Service is always fast and friendly and my one complaint is the price. They're big, but $17 for a whole and $11 for a half is a lot (and significantly more than they used to cost, thanks inflation.) But as long as the quality and flavor stand up, I'll keep Bison Witches on my roster. For now, it's still worth the price. read more
