we went here for the first time. I had the salmon and my husband had the chicken marsala. it was delicious. we started with the crab cakes. i would have to say 15.00 for 2 crab cakes was a bit pricey. I had 2 glasses of the Rombauer zinfandel and my husband had a dustbowl hops of wrath and another beer. we spent over 100 bucks on our meal. we really enjoyed our meal thank you we will be back. read more

My husband made a reservation here last Saturday. Asked for a nice table for my birthday. They crammed us into a corner in the back. I was so uncomfortable. Had people on both sides of us and couldn't move at all. My husband and I had to crisscross our legs underneath and rest them on the table base. Plus it was super hot in that corner. The food and service was not good. New York strip was super fatty and gristly and my seafood pasta tasted like boxed dried pasta. The server was very unfriendly, barely said a word to us. Overall a very disappointing experience for my birthday. Will not return here. read more

One of the perks of having a business in downtown Turlock is the choices of good restaurants at noon time. One of my, our, favorites for lunch is the Turkey with Cranberry sauce Sandwich and fresh French Fries from Bistro 234. Today was one of those days we were hungry for that. We get our orders to go since we are within walking distance and like to bring our lunch back to the office. Opened up the bag, then opened up the to-go box expecting to get that smell of fresh French Fries, well, no smell. The French Fries were cold and soggy, that should have been an indication that lunch was not going to be good. Picked up my sandwich, the bottom piece of bread was dripping wet as it was sitting on a dripping wet piece of lettuce. Next, looked at the inside of the sandwich, it was NOT fresh Turkey. It was the thin pre-sliced packaged meat, which I do not eat, YUK! What a big disappointment. I took the so called turkey off so I could at least try to eat the cranberry and cream cheese, but that was impossible because of the wet bread. What a waste. I'm not giving this a good review because it was a horrible experience and I am still hungry. Guess I will go to our break room and eat a stale left over donut. read more

I took my husband here for a Valentine's lunch. We had the mushroom Ravioli. Absolutely scrumptious! The first time we ate here, I had the salmon dinner. I love salmon! This was the most incredibly YUMMY salmon I have ever eaten. I would come here again, only if someone else was paying! If the prices were more reasonable, I'd come more often. So far, the first visit was a business meeting, and this time I bought gift cards from Costco. Like I said, I love the food! Incredible tastes! New drink menu with a lot of favorites for my wife. The braised short ribs are pretty phenomenal in the summer. The artichoke appetizer is probably my favorite thing on the menu. Our dining partners are especially fond of the monk fish special that's been on the menu lately. I saw a review about the wine being over-priced. I've seen these wines on other lists for waaay more. There isn't anything cheap on the wine list here, but there also aren't any "cheap" wines on this list. Each one is close to an award winner. All in all, i think the reviews on here giving it 1 or 2 stars are ridiculous. If you want real reviews, look on open table, where people know what nice food is. read more

The husband and I love going here for date night. I'm not sure what the bad reviews for service are about, we have been here many many times without trouble. Very nice atmosphere and food is fantastic lunch or dinner. It is pricey but you get what you pay for. Appetizers through desserts this place is fantastic. Great place for an event! We recently had a bridal shower in Bistro 234's wine room. It was fantastic! The staff was so accommodating, especially the manager Jayden. The food was delicious, extensive wine menu and amazing mixed drinks. Another very nice feature was the opportunity for everyone to order off the menu, rather than a set menu for the group. My wife and I felt as if the environment was cheaply decorated and the food was much overpriced. The hostess had the personality of a "rock" and our waitress was extremely slow. The owner, a very large oddly dressed woman greeted my wife with a glass of wine in her hand and began drinking in front of us. The restaurant gave my wife and I the impression it was under new ownership from the tacky impression the owner gave "hitting the bottle in front of us". Lovely atmosphere, lovely food, vattentive service. Really enjoyed our lunch here on Saturday afternoon. I had the salmon, with a just-right size of green salad and fries. All perfectly prepared. The interior of the restaurant is upscale and yet soothing .. a perfect place to meet with a friend or friends, enjoy a tasty meal and glass of wine, and just relax and savor the moment. Bistro service has really gone down hill from what it once was. Was here for dinner with my husband last week and I don't think we will be returning. First the good- Greeted and seated promptly by the hostess, great atmosphere, menu wasn't to large and the food came out great. Now the not so good- SERVICE!!!!!!!! our server was horrible not familiar with the menu, didn't know how to describe anything, seemed bothered by the fact that we asked questions, was very slow with our drink order but found time to stand around and chit chat with other coworkers. It seems like there are a lot of new servers and I can't say that you guys have hired the best ones. Great service keeps customers coming back. read more

Yes it's small downtown and there is a few restaurants around the main street. But my wife she said let's try Bistro 234 (OKAY LET'S DO IT). This is the most honest review about the food and the price so keep reading please ! To be honest with you the food is very organized but at the same time I can tell you the food is suck . I feel like I want to puke after I test the macaroni and other food we already ordered. The bill overpriced and the dish is very small for adults people. It's my duty to write a review about that restaurant. Even the waitress she don't know what to do to help us and she was doing her best but again the food is suck and we order another dish and it was the same nasty as hell , so I knew that's not her fault and she was doing a good job . But I will blame the owner and the chef for the food list. I'm wondering how Bistro got a good reviews on Yelp ?????? If you look at the food the next second will disappear by itself (very little piece of meat that you can barely see it only if you have a Telescope :) . But I was there and we already sat ! Went here after my brothers graduation. It was very trendy with good food, a little pricey, but great atmosphere. Both of my siblings like very plain food, which I don't think the kitchen liked. They asked for everything on the side (my sister got a burger with peppers / goat cheese / mayo or something) and asked for it all on the side but it came with it on the food, and my brothers turkey bacon sandwich (that he asked to hold he pesto on) came with just bacon - no turkey. read more

My wife and I have been coming here for years and have usually had a very nice experience. However, our last visit not so much. I made a reservation for a party of 8 days in advance. I received two phone calls from them confirming my reservation. Upon arriving, our table wasn't ready which was fine because our group wanted to have some drinks anyways. So we went the bar and got zero attention for a good 5 minutes. I understand it was a Saturday and very busy, but no acknowledgment of our presence is unacceptable. We continued to drink and hang out for over an hour without being seated. The hostess never gave us updates or seemed apologetic in any way. We finally had no choice but to leave. The problem was that the table they had for us was being occupied by people that didn't want to leave. There should be contingency plan in place when you know you have multiple big parties coming. All in all very upset about our last visit and will be spreading the word. read more

The first 2 times we went to this spot, things were good, say in the four star range. Servers and food were great, came out in pretty good time, etc.. The last 3 times I have been to this place, things have really gone downhill. This last experience we decided, we won't be back. First off, I think anyone reading this or considering this restaurant should also read the review by Chris T., especially if you have dietary restrictions or allergies. We arrived early & the moment we got there, were almost bowled over by a rude waitress that wanted to shove past us at the doorway. I have worked in restaurants & this is so not ok. She didn't even have anything in her hands. We were seated right by the door & hostess stand. Why? There were many other places in the restaurant to seat us, as it was empty on the inside. It seemed like a last resort spot, but it was their first choice. Even though we arrived early, everything seemed to take them forever. We were brought waters & bread right away but our server didn't come around for several minutes. Plus, that bread is cheap crap & it's served with butter, which I cannot eat. Why not have olive oil & vinegar as an option? This is what other restaurants of this "caliber" offer. Maybe they have a deal with one of the local dairies or something. Our server didn't seem to want to bother with omitting dairy from my plate, even though I get skin problems if I consume dairy, especially concentrated forms like cream, butter, & cheese, all of which seem to be on every single plate. He asked me if I was allergic or if I just don't eat it. That to me says "if you're not going to die from it, we will just put the dairy on your plate & not tell you." He seemed annoyed by having to accommodate. At a place that is charging $28 a plate, this should be no problem. Other servers here did this for me in the past & none of them asked me if I could be hospitalized or is it just a preference. His solution was to basically limit my menu choices for me, instead of allowing me to choose something & then just use a butter alternative like olive oil. Our food took FOREVER to come out. I was especially bothered because I had an early appointment the following morning. I think it was a good 40 minutes when our food finally arrived. It was delicious as it always is (EDIT, except too much aioli on the potatoes so it kinda grossed me out) however, the wait was too long, so it didn't matter. Also, it was not as hot as it should have been. By the time the plates arrived I just wanted to rush eating & leave. Our server also seemed to repeatedly disappear. We wanted to order a glass of wine at one point but he had not been back once to check on us, even though he knew we were going to order a glass. We kept wondering what was going on, but he disappeared after taking our order. Actually, he never even brought us one thing, other staff did. He never checked on us. He never reassured us our food would be out soon. Maybe he's new to waiting tables? Don't know, but the service was not deserving of the tip we left, that's for sure. The staff in general seemed unhappy, as well. The hostess looked miserable & I don't think she ever smiled once, not even when she sat us. It just kind of seemed like very few people working there really cared about their performance. Also, they sat 2 VERY LOUD couples in the table right by ours. Why not seat them in one of the open tables way over on the other side of the place? I, like others, noticed a lack of management, which is likely the source of all of these issues. Good food for Turlock, & this place has great potential, too. I know that because I have experienced it. It's sad to see this kind of service at a place that can really be so nice. Made a reservation this morning for 2 for 7:15 and specifically asked for a table inside due to heat. Went in and she was seating us outside. Told her we asked for inside. She said they had a party reserve there cellar area and therefor we only had option of sitting outside. Not cool. Not happy. read more

I would have to say that Bistro is in the top three restaurants in Turlock. The food is very tasty and the service is always wonderful. There are not many nice restaurants in Turlock, so when you get ready to go out you usually decide between a Mexican food restaurant or Applebees. Its really nice to have a family owned restaurant with something other than burritos and burgers on the menu. The atmosphere is relaxing and the decor is trendy but not overly modern, perfect for a romantic dinner or an night with friends. When the weather is nice I like to take advantage of their outside seating. The restaurant is located in the old historical downtown Turlock which is full of charm with its shops and decor. Thursday night they have a rib special, the rack of ribs is Huge and its served with french fries and coleslaw its delicious. If you ever have friends visiting and want to take them to a good local spot take them to Bistro you wont be disappointed. read more

On Friday a friend suggested meeting up at Bistro 234 in Turlock, I had never been there and logged on to read the reviews first to make sure I knew what to order or avoid. While read I realized everybody either loves or hates this place, like it was a hit and miss good restaurant. Not many were just so-so about it. After eating there I can see why, had I eaten there by myself I would have never gone back but because the other guest at the table loved it so much I gave it a so-so review. Overall the atmosphere was good, we were seated right away, it is a nice building and clean looking however the flow of the night was a little off. We arrive we order our drinks, about 10 minutes later our drinks come, with another 10 minutes our server came back to take our order. we ordered apps, soup/salads and entrees. Almost 25 minutes later I get my soup, we then get crab cakes and 1 salad, about 10 minutes later the mac and cheese and other salads come out, with our apps, soup and salad plates empty in front of us the entrees shows up almost 25 minutes later. Then with dinner plates having been cleared for almost 10 minutes our server offers us a dessert list. We order, they lets us know they ran out of one so then we order again. Total time at restaurant 7:10- 9:45 most of that time spent waiting for food. in regards to the food our apps were the crab cakes and white truffle mac and cheese. The crab cakes were really good, more crap than cake which is always nice. However the red pepper sauce was like a blob of 1000 dressing with red peppers in it, The mac and cheese was great, hot and cheese a toasty top, garnished with mirco-radish, but no where did we taste white truffle. It was great just not white truffle. My soup was the french onion, it was average, a little salty which makes it taste more like a beef broth soup than french onion. Everyone else had salads and they said the salads were good. The entree I had was the Rib eye with whole grain mustard, garlic mashed potatoes and vegetable. I ordered the rib eye rare and they did a good job with that however it was an end cut of meat and had a large piece of gristle running through the center. My mashed potatoes were so salty I could not eat them (as a side note the huge garnish of rosemary sticking up 4" above the potatoes would have been a better to eat than the actual potatoes) The whole grain mustard was just that, not a sauce, but 3-4 oz of whole grain mustard poured of the meat and potatoes. The vegetable was asparagus. The website and their menu both stated that they served seasonal dishes, but I guess they didn't specify what season because January is not the central valley's asparagus season as a result the one spear I did eat, was woodsy and without flavor. Everyone else was much happier with their meals (another rib eye plate, bacon wrapped filet and pork shank) although my husband did say that the garlic mashed potatoes that he had received with his pork shank was a little salty. The deserts were fine we had the Diana torte and cheesecake, which I am thinking that they are ordered in from somewhere else because all their desserts were just a piece of pie or cake with some chocolate swirls or berries and most the time a restaurant with a pastry chef of some sort will want to show that off. Overall nothing remarkable or worth returning for myself, but nothing so horrible that if friends asked to meet us there again we would not go. read more

Obviously I understand it depends on the waitress, but ours forget my order and she brought out only half our tables food, and decided to wait 20 minutes to bring the others' meals. My fiancé and I came here for dinner tonight and it was a disappointment from start to finish. I had heard rave reviews from multiple people so I was very excited to try it! We walked in and were seated promptly, our waitress introduced herself, brought us some bread (that tasted like week old grocery store bread)told us the specials and took our order. I had the gnocchi and my fiancé ordered the burger medium rare. Our food arrived about 30 minutes later, mine was piping hot and delicious, his was WELL overdone and dry. When the waitress asked how everything was my fiancé told her his burger was overdone and dry and she literally said nothing and just turned and walked away. We thought maybe she just lacked people skills and would remove the burger from our tab instead. No such luck, she brought us the check and both entrees were on there. Mind you, we were not looking for a free meal, just some proper customer service. Overall, this place gets one star for atmosphere and one star for the gnocchi.
