Have been thinking about this place since I stopped there two years ago. (Has it been that long? How could that be?!?) I had time to kill before seeing a Fringe show down the street, so I revisited the sandwich I had the last time -- the Genoa Salami Panini (fresh mozzarella, roasted pepper tapenade, and sundried tomato and basil mayo). I'd been by here quite a few times without realizing it (which, once you see the size of it, you can understand) but it wasn't until I was looking for a nearby place to get a cheap sandwich that I thought to stop. And boy, am I ever glad I did. I got the eggplant pesto panini, their homemade lemonade, and a "big cookie", all for $10 on the nose. The panini was the best that I've had in a long time: lots of perfectly melted mozzarella and fresh pesto, and a solid amount of eggplant on delicious bread. The lemonade was a great balance of sweet and sour, and just what I needed on this hot day! The cookie was the only low point- it was pretty bland, without a lot of chocolate pieces. You can't get much cheaper in this area for that much food, though. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the sandwich, and I'm going to be full for the rest of the day! "Bite" is about right. If it was called "Meal," that would be a massive fabrication, kind of like saying Boston is a big city. Or that living south of Broome Street isn't Chinatown. Not that there's anything wrong with Chinatown. In fact, even I live there, and there's never been a Chinese member of my family. And I'm not saying Chinatown should only be for Chinese people either, because we're all equal now anyway, like the portions among these less expensive sandwich joints. In fact, if I were to get really carried away, I'd say "Bite" was a solid, run-of-the-mill place where you should go for a fresh sandwich, that won't offend you, or irritate you in anyway. Well, they could be bit less stingy with the hummus. It's only hummus, for God's sake. Really... only a teaspoon? Surely you could slap in a bit more for $6.50. I can't imagine your overhead is more than $50 a month. This place is literally a window, a Mexican guy, and a menu. I don't know where he makes the food. This guy is a miracle worker. I know all about the fabled price per square foot in this city, but this place is taking the piss. So don't go here in a rain storm, like I did, and have to wait in a downpour while they make your sandwich. But do go, all the same. It's almost worth it. read more

I heart this place so much. I would love to give it 5 stars, but because they are quite disorganized during the week, they get a minus star. Let me break it down: It's my at least once a week lunch place and from the sounds of it, other people feel the same way. The bad: It's typically quite busy and its just clusters of people waiting. I don't know who has ordered, who is waiting to order or who is just standing there for fun. When they yell, "NEXT," it's usually several people looking at each other saying, "Have you ordered? have you ordered?" When you do order they take your order and then walk away. I think it would be beneficial to take my name and also my money at the time of ordering. HOWEVER I deal with the bad because I LOVE their food. The good: Middle Eastern Turkey (Spicy). Perfect sandwich of turkey, hummus, greens and tomatoes. I get it on the pita because it seems less bready then the others and I have converted most co-workers to order it with the pita now. Also tell them to toast the pita. The French Bite: I dont know if it's seasonal but it's there right now and if they take it away it will be a very sad sad day for me. Ham or Turkey, brie cheese, greens and sweet mustard. This you get on multigrain bread TOASTED. Trust me on this. It's a fine science to that perfect sandwich. Goat Cheese Salad: Delicious, the title says it all. My only slight problem is that they stuff the container so much its hard to put the dressing on it and coat the entire salad perfectly. This place is awesome. I work nearby and come here quite often. The roast beef sandwich with smoked pepper mayo is ONE OF THE BEST SANDWICHES I HAVE EVER HAD. No exaggeration. How many times in all my years in New York have I passed by this place and said....oh I must try it, I heard good things.... But alas the opportunity never arose, until a couple of weeks ago when, on my way to the nearby REI I was just hungry and in a rush and passing Bite and all things converged to lead me to finally try it. Now I understand the appeal of this place! The Sabich sandwich I ordered was incredibly quick, delicious, and served on hearty bread unlike the pita it usually comes in, a fact which I would normally bemoan but that actually makes perfect sense. Genius Bite! You know that we huddled masses yearning to stuff our faces and fill our hungry bellies on our rush to wherever we may be going NEED a hearty sandwich, need something that will not fall apart. And that's exactly why I enjoyed the Sabich so much, sitting on the steps of REI and dropping fresh hardboiled egg pieces all over the floor (that's my fault, not the sandwich's). Thanks, Bite. Amazing food, but when you get back it's the wrong order. I don't know why, but the owners employee the same super slow motion guy who seems to be there day and night -- and as each year passes he seems to get worse. What's sad is that there may only be one person ahead of you on the line, but it will still take years for you to get your order. The guy behind the counter also mumbles which adds to the entire mess. Even getting a mere cup of soup can seem like a great undertaking. And the final proof of all of this is at lunchtime the orders are taken so slowly that the crowds waiting spill into the street. What makes this so sad is that the quality of the food at Bite is still amazing and high quality. The bread is good, the ingredients are amazing, and the menu is vegetarian friendly. But the bad service kills it. And every time I go back, the service seems to get worse. My advice is as follows: If you have serious time to kill, then go -- but check your order before you leave to make sure that it's alright. I'm not in this neighborhood too often but happened to be there in the afternoon in desperate need of a quick cheap lunch. Yelp pointed me here so to Bite I went. I LOOOOVED it! I had the Middle Eastern Vegan and it was absolutely delicious. Quick well priced I will definitely be returning here when I find myself downtown. Highly disorganized and it's like playing Russian Roulette with the quality you receive. When they are on, the sandwiches are great., but more often than not you are stuck in a crowd of people standing in front of the counter and no way of telling who ordered yet. The workers will often serve people their food that you ordered 5-minutes before than. Just now I got a chicken pesto panini on whole wheat, two people received their's before me (I asked if multi-grain takes longer to cook, jokingly, and the guy serving just said "yep'). I am now sitting at my desk with a chicken pesto panini, cheese not melted and the middle of it cold. The meat is clumped in the middle, too. It's pretty disgusting. This place is good for a grab-and-go breakfast! The wait was very short and the service was very friendly. I ordered an iced coffee and a ham and egg sandwich without any expectations. The iced coffee was nothing special but the ham and egg sandwich was EXACTLY what I was looking for. The ham was savory and the egg was not soggy on the croissant at all. The sandwich was a tad greasy, but not to the point where you felt like you were shortening your lifespan. If I ate savory breakfasts more often, I would definitely go to Bite again. I think the only way my breakfast could have tasted better would have been if I hadn't been forced to stuff it down my throat before going into the IRS. And I don't order anything other than what is on the menu. If it weren't for the food being so good and close to work, I would never go there. I used to love coming to Bite to grab some lunch when I worked in Soho. True, this location does not have any seating and is pretty tiny; you may actually miss it if you don't precisely look for the order and pick-up windows wedged between Lafayette and Bleecker. However, this place is perfect for take-out. They make everything fast, and at an affordable price. My favorite thing on the menu is the mediterranean salad, which comes in a huge portion with plenty of cucumbers, tomatoes, roasted red pepper tapenade, roasted eggplant, almonds, and a generous dollop of hummus on top. I swear there is so much going on in this salad that you can even do without any dressing. The hummus also makes the salad a fulfilling meal, without being a gut-buster. It is a killer deal at just $7. The hummus served here is pretty good indeed that I've enjoyed just ordering the hummus & pita plate under their appetizer section for $5. It is a very generous portion as well for just $5. Many of their sandwiches and paninis are good as well. And if you're ever in the area in the mornings, stop by and try their nutella with bananas on a ciabatta. Gooey, chocolaty and delicious. read more

I picked up the Mediterranean Turkey (spicy) sandwich from here today through MealPal. Unfortunately this was the least satisfying meal I have had through MealPal to date. The bread was very stale and had no flavor, there was hardly any turkey in it (I would guess 5 pieces total spread throughout the entire baguette), and not enough hummus to make up for the dryness of the bread. While the hummus itself was tasty I couldn't taste it within the sandwich. As others have mentioned it wasn't really spicy, and only half of my sandwich had the spicy stuff on it. It was definitely thrown together very haphazardly, and given the taste, I'm thinking it may have been made hours ahead of time. The "line" here, if you could even call it that, was just about 30 people standing around, and you could not tell who was waiting to order vs. who was waiting for an order already place. However, once I went to the front I did get my sandwich within less than a minute. I've eaten at the other Bite location near Union Square and had the Mediterranean Salad with chicken which was absolutely delicious and I would recommend (that is also why I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of the 2 it probably deserves). I just cannot recommend the sandwiches at this location at all. While I am somewhat full, I still wish I had something else to eat that tasted better. Bite is located right in front of my work. It is a semi-foodstand with amazing food. I love going to the Bite for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Although line can get long sometimes, it is a great place for a take-out. They sell baked goods all day long (which can be good for the breakfast). Their breakfast menu is available only from 7-11am, I love getting their Med.Breakfast sandwich ($4). (Btw. $5 min. for cards) It comes in Pita bread with Hummus, Organic Egg, hot sauce, and some chopped cucumbers and onions inside. Very fulfilling, delicious, and warm. For lunch, their Mediterranean Salad is AMAZING. It comes in tossed mesclun with baked eggplants, red pepper, great scoop of delicious and rich hummus and dash of toasted almonds. With the side of warm pita bread, this is more than just plain salad. It is really good. a must try!! (For only $6) (Just be aware of the line during busy lunch hours! in fact, line goes pretty quicker than it looks.) The food is good if they can actually get your order right. Theres a specific counter person around noon, who's managed to get my order wrong three days in a row. I'm going to start walking right pass Bite if I see him in the window or triple checking my order next time because I'm tired of getting my lunch, opening it at work and finding out my order is wrong. We wanted to try Bite because we were going to be in the neighborhood. They're open surprisingly early, which is great if you're going to be around during unusual hours or work an early shift in the city. My spouse knew all about this place for some reason, he knew they were open early and had great prices and simple, great stuff. They use the highest quality of local ingredients. I thought the menu was a little eclectic - shakshuka, Middle Eastern sandwiches and Salads, Italian Salads, chili, coconut curry?! I wasn't sure this could all be pulled off under the same roof. But I saw the pics and was convinced it was worth a try. First, the chai. It was perfect, one of the best chais I've ever had. I got a chunk of spices in my first sip and noted how well-blended it was. It wasn't too sweet like most chai, and it wasn't too salty as it can be when made with too much milk. Most chai tastes like cinnamon and nutmeg with little else - in this one, you could taste the diversity of spices in the blend. Amazing. I absolutely loved the Mediterranean Salad with chicken. I ordered it without the roasted pepper tapenade because I often dislike roasted peppers. I was afraid the 'Middle Eastern Salad Mix' would have onions in it and it did - it was basically Turkish shepherd salad, diced cucumber, tomatoes and red onion. But everything in the bowl was so perfect that it wasn't too terrible picking out the onions from that part of the dish. The almond slivers were crunchy and flavorful, like an almond which has been properly roasted; the chicken was moist and warm, but not so warm as to wilt the salad, and had a fine spice rub which was distinctly Middle Eastern; the hummus wasn't sour or gritty, but creamy and balanced. The Spring Mix under the diced cucumbers and tomatoes was fresh and colorful. And the eggplant. Oh, the eggplant! It was roasted eggplant without a vinaigrette or brine to it. No breadcrumbs. Just pure, delicious eggplant collapsing on itself with that kalamata olive color. Not too dry, not too wet. Just fresh. I usually don't order salads because they always left me hungry as a teen and young adult. But this was perfect for me. My spouse had a mozzarella and eggplant sandwich. I was jealous of that perfect-looking bread. He usually steals bites of my food, but his food was so good that he only swiped a few chicken chunks before he was out of room as his own sandwich exceeded his expectations. We'll definitely be back! One thing that makes me super sad: apparently some or all of the other locations have gluten-free bread for a $1 upcharge. This would mean the world to me since they have incredible sandwich options. But they didn't have it at this location. I've requested it from the owner and hope they can make this happen...otherwise, I may be bringing my own dinky toast, which is hard to use since you need 4 pieces to match a hoagie roll. I want to try shakshuka but without bread I'm afraid I won't be getting enough. I might bring gluten-free pita, but it will be either dried out if toasted/warmed at home, or stiff if brought unheated. And I doubt I have the self-control to get a dish like this home on the train unmolested. Ah the dilemma! read more

Reasonable prices for delicious sandwiches. I especially like their egg breakfast sandwiches (but wish they opened earlier than 11am on weekends). I also like the mediterranean sandwich though the eggplant is sometimes soaked in too much oil. Definitely place your order online in advance to avoid waiting too long (orders aren't always ready on time, but this is generally faster than waiting in line to order and then waiting for your food to be made). 5 stars for the sandwiches, 3 for the hours, service, and reliability. read more

The Black Forest ham panini is bomb! The bread is crispy. Everything is so flavorful and well seasoned. Ham is artisanal with some chewy fat, not the typical kind you find in a supermarket. Wait is about 5-7 mins. Great price for an amazing meal. The drinks are pretty good and cheap. I had a chai latter which was a bit too sweet for me but really fragrant. This hole in the wall is a gem in the neighborhood. I went here on a whim on a rainy night and had an amazing experience. Lots of Vegan and Veg options, but meat eaters you too will find lots of delectable offerings. I ordered a turkey sandwich with the spicy humus and it was great and did not lack flavor. Other than the price I'd come here time and time again if wanted a sandwich. He completely ignored me when I was in front of him and asked if my sandwich was there. There were only two others behind me and one was waiting for her order too. There are 4 stools that I was sort of afraid to sit on, fearing that I would topple over and everyone would laugh at me. I was able to sit on the duck-taped top but it didn't quite match the height of the bar. I figured to eat the sandwich out of my hand and, actually, it worked out perfectly! Ordering HALF of a panini and an already prepared side salad should take no more than 10 minutes guys.... and then seeing 2 people who have ordered full sandwiches behind me leave first just didn't make sense. My chicken panini was basic and had dry a*s bread scratching the roof of my mouth the whole time and it cost $1 extra for the 1/2 chx panini and side salad combo. Again, doesn't make sense. Then, WHATEVER dressing that came with the salad had so much damn pepper or something that every bite burned my nostrils; and I'm a spicy food kinda girl. Stopped by here to grab a quick bite (pun intended) on my way to a show at the theatre nearby. I ordered the prosciutto and mozzarella panini, which also has basil and sundried tomatoes in it, uniting to form an irresistible sandwich. The bread was hot and fresh, the mozzarella divine, the prosciutto a perfect amount to give it just the right flavor. I ate it right there on the street outside the pickup window.
