Yawn. Fortunately I had some kalamata olives and pepperoni at home to doctor it up. Would have loved to try the crab bisque others have raved about, but tonight's soup was chicken gnocchi, which didn't call out to me. The New York Style Crust and savory Tomato Sauce come together to make the perfect hand-held, foldable Pizza. The expansive lineup of Pasta dishes are also right out of the Big Apple. Calzones, Strombolis, Hot Sandwiches, Cold Sandwiches, Appetizers, Salads and Deserts are all on the menu. If it's Italian, this Rolesville trattoria probably serves it. The one negative is that there is no inside seating. We were fortunate that the weather was beautiful on our first visit, and we were able to enjoy a bright sunny day at one of their outdoor tables. Otherwise this is one of the best take-out Pizzerias in the area. We enjoyed an 18" Pepperoni Pizzaand 10" Individual Pizza with Onions and Bell Peppers. Both were delicious - with just the right amount of savory Tomato Sauce and melty Mozzarella Cheese. Another favorite was the Penne Arrabiata Pasta with Black Olives and a Spicy Tomato Sauce. The Penne was cooked perfectly, the sauce tantalizing and the portion more than enough for two meals. My favorites are the Italian subs. Pie-Zano's sub rolls are everything a perfect roll should be: slightly sweet, slightly crispy on the outside, enough texture to provide a satisfying crunch when you bite into it and king-size. Any filling would taste great when stuffed inside one of these beauties. The Special Sub is crammed full of Ham, Salami, Provolone, Cappicola, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and Banana Peppers and seasoned just right with classic Italian flavors, Olive Oil and Vinegar. A complete meal on a roll. The only item that we did not particularly enjoy was the Baked Spaghetti with Ricotta and Mozzarella. We found it to be rather bland, but were able to bring it to life with some oregano, basil, red pepper flakes and a drizzle of olive oil. The decor is warm minimalism, the vibe is neighborly and the staff cordial and accommodating. Signature sandwiches are my personal favorites, but there's also a variety of Small Plates, Salads and Boards. The sandwiches are huge - like the ones found in the best of New York's delis. One special, the Sweet Heat Seoulwich, was truly special. (Be sure to check the specials which change often.) The Toasted Hoagie Roll is piled high with Korean BBQ Glazed Pineapple, Mortadella, Mozzarella, Pickled Fresno Peppers, Gochujang Aioli (spicy Korean-inspired mayonnaise), Lettuce and Tomato. (Bet you can't eat all of it in one sitting.) Granchio is a straightforward, outstanding eatery that serves perfectly prepared dishes that are creative and flavorful. Portions are generous and the seasonings imaginative. All the staff (servers, chef, owners) are friendly and welcoming. This is a real 'feel-good' place to enjoy a sumptuous meal. While there are a some tasty pasta dishes and other options on the menu, the shellfish creations are the stars of the show. My favorites are the BOIL BAGS. The 1/2 pound portion comes with one Corn on the Cob and one large Boiled Potato. The one pound portions come with two each. Choices are Shrimp; Snow Crab; King Crab; Lobster Tail; Green Mussels; Black Mussels and Crawfish. Sauce options include Cajun, Lemon Pepper, Garlic Butter or Granchio House (a combination of all three). You can also chose between mild, medium or hot spice levels. The Black Mussel Boil Bag was absolutely delicious. The Mussels were slightly sweet, tender, plump and cook just until they opened. I chose the House Sauce seasoned somewhere between medium and hot. It was perfect - tangy, zesty, peppery, buttery and loaded with flavor. The Potato was large and the Corn drenched in the great sauce. I added the extra Sausage and had plenty for a filling dinner and lunch the next day. Another delightful surprise was the Blue Crab Ravioli. The ample pasta envelopes were stuffed with succulent Maryland Blue Crab and fresh Ricotta Cheese and covered with a creamy Red Vodka Sauce. Again, there was enough for an ample dinner and leftover lunch. We can also recommend either the Shrimp Cocktail or the Fried Oyster Appetizers. The Shrimp were just the right size, perfectly chilled and served with a zesty cocktail sauce. The Oysters tasted fresh and the spicy Oyster Dipping Sauce was just hot enough to get your attention. Another favorite is the Snow Crab Boil Bag. The flavorful snowy white meat locked up inside each leg takes a little work, but is worth the effort. It is sweet with a slight hint of the ocean and a pure delight when paired with the lively House Sauce. Finish you feast with a large serving of heavenly Tiramisu. It will put a smile on your face.
