06.14.2026 Sunday Went here to celebrate my daughter's post college graduation ceremony. Party of 20+. We made reservations a month in advance for 430-5pm time frame. BJ's kept my reservation. As we arrived we were greeted by the host and immediately sat us down. My party ordered drinks and appetizers. All were being delivered as other people were arriving and ordering. I was happy about our waiter/waitress taking the initiative to handle orders. I wish I knew their names, they were doing a fantastic job! Appetizers, main entrees, pizza, and beverages were all arriving promptly. The quality of food was fantastic. All was delicious. The ambiance was great. We sat at the outdoor patio area. It was a hot day, by 5pm we were feeling the ocean breeze. It was not packed as I expected which came to a big surprise. That made the vibe even better. Clean restrooms is a plus. Plenty of parking, but all is pending on the day of time. We happen to get lucky with available parking. Since it is close to UCSD, this is definitely a spot to host any event. We came here for an office lunch with a fairly large group of about 10 people and were seated on the outdoor patio. Unfortunately, the service was pretty slow from the start. It took quite a while for someone to come take our orders, and we waited even longer just to get water for the table. As a vegetarian, I found the menu pretty limited when it came to main dishes. I ended up ordering the Protein Bowl without any meat. Nothing on the plate was warm, and several of the ingredients, especially the corn and beans, tasted like they came straight from a can. For a dish that cost around $20, I expected a lot more. BJ's is always open late and we came here just for that since we arrived in LaJolla late in the evening and was hungry. We also have this in the Bay Area and it's pretty slow service though. This place is a little faster service. Food is good. Good for groups or just to hang out at the bar to watch sports. We shared their BJ's personal pizza and new sampler platter. The sampler had bbq tri-tip sliders, mozzarella sticks, chicken wings and spinach queso dip. Everything was good but I really liked their pizza and chicken wings the best. Oh I chose the lemon pepper flavored wings with bone-in. We also had blue moon beer tap. Would have loved to have Pzookie dessert but I couldn't fit anymore food in me. LOL. Those are a must have! There are a handful of dishes to choose from, like a personal pizza, burger, and chicken parmigiana pasta. Also tried the wings and chips with salsa and guac. But fun if you wanna go out and watch football games or other sports games. The ahi salad was not good, so definitely skip that. But the pazookie was amazing, most of the food here is good. However I feel like I was kinda underwhelmed because there wasn't enough pistachio and I felt like I was just eating a brownie with knafeh. The food is consistently good and the service is usually pretty great. They run out of my friend's and mine favorite stout (Guinness) quite regularly, but that criticism is for management or perhaps the bar manager, if there is such a thing. That does put a damper on things going forward, I simply can't say it doesn't. The first thought is, "Should we leave?," but usually we're a little too hungry to start all over with something else. The wait staff is usually very apologetic and sweet when they bring back the horrible news, but still it stiiings. We've started dining at an Irish pub that's farther away because an Irish pub will always have the good stuff, but it is inconvenient and, because I'm not alone it takes planning. On 1/17/25 my party of 12 was seated outside. Due to some hiccups with the host/manager we ended up switching from a table that only sat 8 of us to a table that finally sat all. The manager working this night apologized and gave us complimentary appetizers of our choice for the whole table to share. This was so nice of her and definitely made our friend's birthday. Our server was Ryan M (according to the reciept). He was so attentive and very kind. He had an excellent customer service and truly served with a smile. We all ordered a wide range throughout the menu and the food is typical BJ quality meal. He knew where the orders were intended for and routinely checked on us for any additional concerns or requests. I was able to apply BOTH my $10 coupons to the bill through the BJ's iPad checkout thingy, after showing proof/rewards by providing your associated phone number to the app. I personally am not a fan of BJ's food for the cost of everything, however, I do give them credit for having Daily Deals and for offering meal deals/rewards. Half of us got a deal that came with an entree with a (small) pizookie of limited flavors. The pizookie is one of the main reasons why I think anyone should try BJ's at least once in their life. What a disappointing experience. This place always packed with college students. We tried coming here twice before, but it was always so crowded that we actually just ended up eating elsewhere. What was annoying is that the second time we were here, the waiter completely forgot about us, never called our name, and let multiple other parties that came after us in. We should have known by then that God is trying to save us from this bullet, but we didn't listen and tried our luck a third time. We were seated outside since my friend had a dog. It was chilly and we told our waiter multiple times to turn the overhead heater on, but he kept saying it's broken. So we were stuck out in the cold the entire time. We ordered drinks, which took 30 minutes to come out. It was Happy Hour and all domestic drinks are $4. The waiter interestingly told me that a bottle of Heineken was considered one of the domestic drinks, which pleasantly surprised me since I didn't think the U.S. has taken over Dutch yet for this to be considered a domestic beer. My friend also asked for a taster for a stout. It took about 30 minutes for all our drinks to come out. I don't know if they went to the Ralph's next door to buy my Heineken or not, but that should not have taken 30 minutes to bring out a bottle of beer. The food then took another 45 minutes to come out and all I ordered was a strawberry chicken salad. The salad was fine, maybe just a bit too much balsamic vinaigrette, but overall not bad. When we asked for the check, we realized that my friend was charged for her taster, which was close to $4. This was essentially half the price of her actual drink. Should have told her that the taster was actually gonna cost her, so she could have just bought the actual drink. Also, which places charge for tasters?? I guess this one does . The waiter also told me that Heineken was actually not one of the domestic drinks. Surprise surprise. He blamed it on his manager for telling him the wrong information, but charged me for the full price anyway instead of the Happy Hour price. So my bottle of Heineken (probably they bought from Ralph's next door) was actually $8. This whole experience was just overall off putting. We felt like our server was not transparent at all. Combined with the extremely long wait for the drinks and food, this place is a joke. We should have known that we were not meant to try this BJ when we couldn't get in the first two times. BJs is generally pretty crowded. We sat at the bar to avoid the wait so if you don't mind bar seating check their before waiting for a table. Our server was great and friendly. He informed us of their weekday specials that are a great deal. I got their mini pizza deal which included a salad, mini pizza and mini pazookie for only $13. It was a lot of food for a great price. I would not recommend the caprese salad. Way too heavy with toppings and dressing. The pizza and pazookie are great though. We did have to wait a while for all our food to come out. There weren't many people at that hour. We were a party of four. One small detail -- they didn't bring us water right away, which is usually the first thing you get, especially with ice water. Maybe the staff was just tired at the end of a long holiday shift. My husband ordered the honey wings (the ones with bones) and really enjoyed them. I shared appetizers with my friend -- we got the crispy calamari and the roasted Brussels sprouts. I really liked the Brussels sprouts -- I've ordered them before, and they never disappoint. The calamari, however, were cut into small pieces and didn't really impress me. I prefer them as whole rings, crispy and light. Our friend ordered the ribeye steak, rare to medium rare, with vegetables. The portion of vegetables was a bit small, even though it came with two sides -- he asked for extra veggies instead of other options like potatoes or salad. He said he liked the steak, but when I tried it, I felt like I could probably make a tastier one at home. The service was a bit slow that night, which might be understandable since it was the end of the day on a big national holiday. Usually, I've had faster and friendlier service here, based on my previous visits. As for drinks, my friends had non-alcoholic Heineken, which was the only option available. I had a watermelon margarita -- I think it's a new item on the menu. It was nice, but way too sweet for my taste, though that's expected with liqueur-based drinks. Overall, I'm giving this place 4 stars. There's definitely room for improvement -- the steak could have been better, the calamari could have been served in full rings, and the service could have been faster.
