This restaurant in Auburn is a jewel in BBD's crown. Everyone we encountered, from the hostess who greeted us with a smile and got us seated quickly, to our awesome waitress Jeanette, to the other waitresses and the cashier who ran our check, they were all so lovely. You know how you enter a place and can instantly tell the staff is unhappy? That's not this BBD. The entire vibe of the place was warm and welcoming, like the employees liked their job. Jeanette was an excellent waitress. She was fast, checked on us often, and put up with my million questions, answering each with a warm, happy smile. She deserves a raise. ;) The food came quickly (which is a plus when you're on the road and trying to get to your destination in a decent timeframe), and it was hot and delicious. The fries were the perfect crispness, as was my chicken tenders. Son's burger was so juicy it dripped down his arms, with my hubby exclaiming, "That's when they're the best!" Hubs loved his patty melt and the chicken noodle soup was likely from a can but it was still decent. One of my pet peeves is sitting at a dirty, dish cluttered table while waiting for a check and that didn't happen here. Jeanette was quick to clear our plates (sparing the one we were still working on) and she was prompt with the check once we were done. My only complaint was the temperature in the bathroom. In Auburn, my exception to "chain restaurants" happens to be Black Bear Diner, located on Lincoln Way, in Auburn, CA. The Auburn, CA location of Black Bear Diner is one link in a small chain of restaurants, which span nine western states, and are noted for serving "good ol' home cookin'," and stick-to-your-ribs diner cuisine. Yes, you can find Black Bear Diner locations in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, along with Washington. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a friendly server, who will welcome you to a table. I arrived shortly after the restaurant had opened for breakfast, so the dining room was nearly empty, and I almost had the counter to myself. The counter is large, friendly, and makes a great spot to enjoy breakfast. The window to the kitchen is behind the counter, so you get a great view of what's "happening" during your visit. I have to admit that I'm a senior citizen - how did that ever happen? - and on this early Tuesday morning, I wasn't very hungry, so the "Little Less" section of the breakfast menu caught my attention. And since it had been a long time since I'd enjoyed an omelette for breakfast, the "Ham and Cheese Omelette" seemed to be a perfect fit for my breakfast needs. The star of the breakfast, the omelette, is on the small side, as it's based on only two eggs, but it's packed with diced ham, lots of cheese, and I think a little butter. No worries, as it's GOOD, I mean REALLY GOOD, and will satisfy all of your breakfast cravings, albeit it on the light side. "Strip-cut hash browns" were a new variety of breakfast potato for me, and I wasn't disappointed, as the hash browns were cut on the thick side, fried to a perfect, golden brown... crunchy on the outside and tender inside, just the way hash browns are supposed to be. I noted that each slice of hash brown seemed to be separated, and cooked to an individual golden brown. Oh yes!!! The hash brown potatoes were great! Rather than a biscuit, I ordered sourdough toast, complete with lots of melted butter. My breakfast came garnished with an orange slice, along with a lettuce leaf or two, which made for a great presentation. My breakfast was on the "light side," yet that was what I was looking for today, and I can say that I enjoyed a great breakfast at Black Bear Diner, in Auburn, CA. Yes, you can enjoy breakfast any time the restaurant is open, so if you love breakfast as much as I do, you've come to the right restaurant. The Auburn location of Black Bear Diner will take care of your breakfast cravings, as well as lunch and dinner, and you'll be treated to delicious food, a "woodsy" dining room, and lots of friendly service. Alright, I "waffled," - no pun intended - between giving Black Bear a 3 or a 4 star review. I was considering a 3 star rating because of my server's reluctance to have her photo taken, as she delivered my breakfast, and the fact that this is definitely a chain restaurant. However, the food is good and it's reasonably priced, and Black Bear Diner, in Auburn embraces the things I love about a restaurant. The cook ruined the experience. I'd been eagerly looking forward to lunch at Black Bear for two hours, and when I arrived I ordered a cheeseburger salad without pickles or onions. When I arrived, the burger was cold, but I let it go. As I started eating, I kept noticing the distinct smell of pickled. Soon I was finding onions sprinkled throughout the salad at the bottom of the bowl, and tasting (and smelling) pickles on all the lettuce. Lifting up the bulk of the lettuce, I found a puddle of pickle juice. Who does that?!?! This wasn't just the random oops a bit of onion got into the tomatoes. No, this was very specifically pickle juice and onion at the bottom of my bowl. I told the waitress, who was extremely sweet, and she offered a replacement salad. But I replied that I just can't trust them to prepare it right when someone went to this much sneaky effort to sabotage my meal in the first place. Saturday morning around 10am.
