The food is excellent and abundant. This is not health food by any means. The pineapple upside down pancakes are superb. The bacon is sublime. Our server, Christina, and the other servers around, seemed to know what they were doing and advocated our getting food from the kitchen. That was where the problem superceded the quality of the food. What was not great was the cluster-F caused by the Sunday morning manager. First off, especially when there is an open cook/pick-up area, the Manager should not be yelling and cursing at the employees. Yes, everyone around heard it! Next, he was acting as expediter; and doing a piss-poor job of it. We were not the only table which was brought out the wrong food. Three tables near me also were brought food by a confused (not our respective servers) staff. When the food finally came ( a half hour later), it was mostly correct. The eggs were wrong but we were starving. Then, after the rush, this 'Manager" finally abandoned his post as expediter (probably thrilling people who could actually do their jobs​ had he not been directing them) and started to follow the coffee person with his own pot of coffee. It was, at that point, humorous in its Redundancy. The food is good enough to go back, but I will build into my schedule an extra 45 minutes and lower my expectations for professionalism. read more

We stopped off here on our way home to Los Angeles. It was around 2pm and not too busy at all. The restaurant is right off the 15 freeway. Our server Priscilla was very friendly, helpful and the service was fast. The food was enjoyable, we had sandwiches, a burger and a kids chicken tenders. If you like traditional sweet tea, you will love it....very sweet. Otherwise just get half and half. Their bacon ranch dressing (I believe made in house) was great. Huge portions, great coffee and pie! This was my first time at this location but I had experienced Black Bear Diner in northern California and Oregon. Their flavors are consistent and their portions are standard wherever you go. In this particular occasion I had the huevos rancheros, a coffee and and orange juice. I left stuffed and content. Oh how I love Black Bear Dinner. I was initially introduced to the one in Signal Hill by my husband not too long ago and have been a fan ever since. The portions are big (big enough to share if you don't eat much) and the food is good. I think they may be pretty consistent with their menu and recipe because pretty much taste the same as the Signal Hill one and the one in Bakersfield. I don't know if I just haven't noticed in the other locations but this one had an electrical outlet for you to charge your phone. Maybe travelers would ask for plugs I don't know but I haven't seen this at other locations. Our order consisted of Biscuits and Gravy and Denver Omelets my parents both ordered the same omelets. Surprisingly my parents finished their food! They must have been really hungry And really liked their omelette. As for my dish I would of preferred a lot more gravy to have enough to eat those huge biscuits. I ran out of gravy and still had biscuits left over. My parents were first timers at Black Bear Dinner and they asked me to make sure we stop next time we drive up to Vegas. When everything is closed in Barstow, Black Bear is probably open. They have great hours and you can get a meal at 9PM or 6AM. They have holiday meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas as well if you don't feel like cooking. Portions tend to be on the larger size and the staff is friendly. Why would anyone go to Denny's if Black Bear is open? Careful of chocolate and banana crème pies, they are huge. read more

Really cute diner in Barstow. Perfect place to take a break if you're driving through town. The place is cutely decorated and makes you feel super welcome. Our server was ok. She didn't really great us in the nicest manner. She just came up and asked us if we wanted something to drink then if we know what we want. Kind of awkward. I had the mini volcano with an over easy egg and the egg was not runny at all. I'm not that picky of a person but why ask if you just make eggs your way. To start with we waiting 15 minutes from seated to the server taking our order. Liza asked if we were ready to order and I replied with "some time ago". She did not even blink, apologize or grunt. The manager, at least I think he was management. He was dressed in a royal blue shirt with the Black Bear logo on the shirt. The shirt unpressed and shirt tails untucked. He walked passed dirty tables and did not pick up even a fork. Food ordered at 12:11pm and food arrived at 12:28! The place is not busy! Redemption has been make the food was tasty. The fries could have been hotter. Ordered Chicken pot pie: hot, tasty and a bit salty. Fruit was okay. Melon seemed old. Completely love eating breakfast here when I'm driving back from Vegas. I can't remember what I ordered the first time(this is my second time) but I do remember how happy I was which is why I came back. My wife and I love going to Black Bear Diner in multiple locations all over Las Vegas & California. We love the cool Bear branding around the restaurant so much that we've adopted it in our kitchen at home. We even plan to become franchise owners. Unfortunately, this location is our least favorite to go to. We usually encounter exuberant wait staff at Black Bear but there is a server at this location who is relentlessly rude and dismissive. We have been told that we cannot get refills on drinks that clearly say you get a refill on the menu. We've been outright ignored by him turning his back on us and walking away. The worst part is that when we brought this up to the manager he just about laughed in our faces. I'm not surprised because most of the time the manager is staring at the television near the kitchen. I'm sure he is more concerned with who is winning the football game than running the restaurant. read more

We have been to the Black Bear Diner in Milpitas, LaHabra and now Barstow. They are all fabulous and serve the best homemade, delicious comfort food that I have ever eaten. I am officially spoiled rotten by the Black Bear and I prefer their Mash potatoes to those of Lawrys in Beverly Hills. So far the only disappointment of the Black Bear Diner is in Buena Park. This used to be our favorite place for chicken fried steak. Boy were we disappointed last night. The steaks were pre-fab - mine and my husband's looked totally identical. Not hand-breaded like you would expect from a down-home meal. My husband's french fries were tasteless and partially scorched. The mashed potatoes were ok - not creamy enough for my taste and not enough gravy to make up for it. The menu says Italian green beans, but what we got were regular green beans, most likely from a can. We appreciate that we could tell you washed the salad but you should try using a salad spinner to get rid of the excess water. The only thing that tasted really good was the cornbread. We stopped here on our way to Las Vegas for breakfast. It's attached to a gas station with plenty of parking. The restaurant is very clean and the bathrooms are also very clean. My husband and I were semi-hungry (on a scale of 1 to 10, we are probably at a 6). So we decided to share the Grizzi breakfast - three eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, hashbrowns and pancakes!
