This is an excellent diner, where you can get lots of food for a reasonable price. Be aware, the portions are huge! So if you don't want a huge amount of food, consider ordering something from the "little less" section of the menu. The regular portions are enough to share, and I haven't even tried the ones that are marketed as huge meals. The biscuits are particularly giant, about the size of two or three regular ones. Today's review is bout their House made Chili, California Omelette, side of fries and Huckleberry Lemonade. They have a pretty large menu so please don't think my review speaks for everything they offer. Starting with their lemonade, I got the Huckleberry Lemonade! It was good, refreshing and will definitely order it again next time. It wasn't too sweet or bitter, just a good well balanced lemonade. Then I received their house made chili. I got a small bowl because I just wanted to try it out. The meat was cooked and seasoned well. It had a little bit of a spicy kick to it but nothing too overwhelming, good amount of what it seemed to be Kidney beans, Onions and Cheese, all around a great house made chili. Definitely recommend trying it out. Then came the California Omelette and I have to say the plate was huge! I got Hash browns and a biscuit along with the omelette. I feel like the Hash Browns could've been cooked a little more though, they were not as crispy as what I though they were so I wasn't really digging those too much. The biscuit was good, it was enormous so I couldn't finish it but I wouldn't mind getting it again. The omelette was delicious, had some avocado, mushrooms and cheese and I tried it with their sauces "Baby Burn" which tasted like Tapatio, the "Mama Burn" which had a BBQ sauce flavor to it and the "Papa Burn" which actually had a kick to it and it was my favorite of the three. The side of French Fries was good, they weren't soggy or cold I found myself picking at these bad boys more than the Hash Browns. This is another side I wouldn't mind getting again. Overall the service was good, I was seated pretty quick, the food was good, the establishment was clean and it really gave me cabin vibes. I'll definitely be back to try something new! We have been to several Black Bear Diners up and down California. I'm sorry to say that the experience that we had tonight was below even their 3-star rating. First off, when we arrived, we were greeted and asked how many guests. I said 8. The young lady didn't bat an eyelash. Nor did she take my name or write down the group size. There were already a few other guests seated and standing around waiting. The crowd was led to their tables one at a time, we were then called. That's when a woman, who had been waiting before we arrived, mentioned that she was part of a party of nine and that she had been waiting longer. I acknowledged that and sat back down to wait a bit longer. If a restaurant is operating with more than one person acting as host, it is important that each host writes down pertinent information to keep the seating order straight. A few minutes later, we were called and seated at our table. There were already two high chairs in place, so that was perfect. Our table could accommodate more people than we had so we all had plenty of space if we wanted it. Our server brought menus and and took drink orders. The odd thing she did when she delivered them was that rather than serving each guest, she handed them down from the end of our long table. That mean't that hot liquid (coffee and hot water) had to passed hand to hand pass young children. She was kind enough to bring us small plastic cups with straws for the kids. I ordered The Gobbler, a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce, mayo, avocado, tomato and turkey. When she took the order, she didn't ask what kind of bread I wanted so I had to ask what they had. I got wheat. I ordered cole slaw as my side. I think that my order must have sat at the pass for a bit before it was delivered because my cole slaw was room temperature. There was a minimal amount of turkey and a laughable piece of avocado on the one side that I looked at. She ordered the BBQ Pork Ribs with fries and green beans. It also came with a cup of Tomato Basil Bisque. Now, the menu says a FULL RACK. I counted only SIX RIBS and none of them were fused together. A web search shows that a pig has 14 ribs and the minimum to be called a full rack is 8. The other guests ordered a variety of breakfast items, Grilled Chicken & Pesto Pasta and Wild Alaska Salmon. I did not ask how they liked their food. I saw several other things that bothered me. It looked as if there were three guys cooking all the food but there was a period when I only saw two. Perhaps one went on dinner break? We were seated at about 6:00 p.m. It also appeared that the dishwasher also functioned as the bus boy which mean't there were several dirty tables that should have been turned so guests wouldn't have to look at them. There did appear to be enough front of the house employees although some of them lost some work time by standing in front of the drink machine which happened to be where the big screen tv showing the basketball game was. Overall, the organization of the crew was dysfunctional. I will admit that our server as well as the manager came by to check on our table. I could have made my complaints then but I didn't feel that my attitude would allow me to do so calmly. read more

We visit the Black Bear Diner in Colma quite a lot. We enjoy its breakfast items such as pancakes, waffles, omelets, etc. We also enjoy the super salads, which we order most frequently. The serving size of the food is good, pretty large, and the taste is decent. The reason I do not give more than three stars for the rating of this restaurant is that we had some bad experience with it in the past. The service was slow and the restaurant was not that clean with trash on the floor. In addition, the orange juice (OJ) is over priced. The restaurant claimed that the OJ is freshly squeezed; however, it is actually from juice cartons purchased in supermarket, which only costs less than $5 per carton. But the restaurant charges almost $8 for a small glass. read more

Our waitress was SO attentive and food came out fast. But the corned beef hash was so underwhelming. I loved the fruit and the biscuit was hearty but the hash was not that great. As usual, my eyes were bigger than my stomach so I splurged by ordering the Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs. It arrived with a HUGE chicken fried steak (gravy on the side), 3 scrambled eggs, hash browns & 2 big cornbread muffins. All for $15.69. I've never had chicken fried steak but my friend said they are known for it. So I decided why not? Tho so much for me avoiding fried food, lol. It was perfectly fried, not greasy & well seasoned without being salty. I'm not an expert but it was yummy. The cornbread muffins were large & tasted ok - prefer more corn taste. Of course half of my food ended up being taken out for later enjoyment (see photo - tho with the angle the muffin looks bigger than the 1/2 chicken fried steak). Friend ordered the Chicken Avocado Club - triple-stack with grilled chicken breast, avocado, thick-cut smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese & mayonnaise for $12.99. Plus was lucky to substitute onion rings for free too! On a fluke there was a mix up when the manager brought the order so my friend scored both fries & onion rings! Everything was gobbled up so it must have been good. I stole an onion ring & it was yummy, crunchy & not too oily. A nice alternative to the usual Bay Area scene. We'll return. read more

I ordered the Chicken Avocado Sandwhich with the soup of the day, I forgot what it was called but it was a tomato veggie soup, it was delicious and came with crackers. The sandwich was pretty huge, but taste was meh. It tasted like every other sandwich, I liked the avocados and bacon though. My partner got the country fried steak.... The gravy was so bland I was so shocked, it literally tasted like nothing...he ended up adding a bunch of salt and pepper. Loved the hash browns though! The French toast was so yummy, best French toast I've ever had! The side bowl of fruit was sweet as well. For some reason we thought it would be a good idea to try the pies they store in the front, but we were very wrong. We ended up throwing the whole pie after taking one bite, the texture of the pie looked very questionable and all it really tasted like was jelly/jello? Decided to go for brunch. The popular draw here has been the hugeass biscuits. Day um! The biscuits were cold, old, hard, and fell apart. The " ham steak " on my plate was a TWO INCH SQUARE! 2 $ 19 breakfast plates w one coffee, one tea, and one small side of bacon somehow ended up $69.( plus tip) My spouse said the pancakes were almost raw, with no flavor. Had the Saturday prime rib dinner and it was exceptional! Server was very accommodating with bringing extra au jus and switching the cornbread for some biscuits. This place was great even though the wait was 30 minutes. I came here for breakfast not knowing at all what the expect. I had heard from others that this place is decent and the food is good. Once seated I realized what the big deal is about this place. There are so many options to choose from, and everything looks delicious. I was here during the morning hours, so breakfast was on my mind, but the lunch menu looked as appetizing. I ordered an OJ, and when it arrived at the table, I could not believe how much OJ they gave me. My omelette was incredible. It was a sensational meal and defintely worth another visit. The service was very nice and respectful. They were also very helpful in giving me options on things to try. The portions are huge. I don't want anyone sniffing my food. No, really. That is disgusting. They forgot my younger daughters dinner. We had to wait and let our food go cold until her burger appeared. When it came - it wasn't the way she wanted. She asked for it to be plain - no condiments. It wasn't plain. It was drowning in sauce. We sent it back to wait again. We waited a substantive amount of time which lead me to believe they cooked a fresh burger. Sometimes I'm too optimistic. The kitchen scraped off the sauce and slapped a new piece of cheese on it. Yeah, that is just stupid. Lazy and stupid. So frustrating when people do things like that. My "steak" per the kid who sniffed my plate (it was meatloaf) tasted reheated. It was so gross I didn't eat it. My entree was supposed to come with soup or salad. They were out of soup. I asked for salad. They had 2 dressings: thousand island and bacon ranch. No and no. Server did not offer an alternative so I took the initiative and asked for a biscuit. Ohhhh the biscuit. The only thing I ate. It was fresh out of the oven, tender, delicious. My older daughter shared her chicken fried steak breakfast with me. Dinner here was a waste of money. We should have waited until the staff were less green. The food didn't come out for a long time so we had to ask, then we got it about 5 minutes later. We got "The Grizz" and the "Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs." The portions are huge! Especially the yummy, warm, soft biscuits! The food was tasty and the ingredients fresh. We would order those two breakfasts again, and share it between 4 people - that's how big the portions are! Their coffee was ok, fairly ordinary. If I wasn't so used to having coffee at breakfast, I'd probably skip it here. The interior decorations are cute and I like the bear motif. But the carpet was filthy, with visible stains. When we left a little before 11, there was a wait for a table. Let me tell you, this place is like a cabin in the woods. Literally! You can't get any service in here at all! On top of that there's no free WiFi. This was one of the worst dining experiences of my adult life, no cap lol. I was literally sitting at my table reading ingredients on the condiments. Nothing on my phone was loading. I don't know what it is about Black Bear Diner that makes me lose my... well, I'll let you finish that sentence. It must be the comfort food that just gets me in the feels. That and the fact I can order breakfast all day. I was excited that the Colma location opened. Today was their first day. At first I thought it would take a while because of all the people waiting in front. However I was a party of one and was able to get a seat at the counter right away. I felt like it was dinner and a show because I got to see the staff in action. Orders were flying by on large platters, and staff was hustling. I couldn't decide on ordering breakfast or dinner, so I ordered steak and eggs. I'm a sucker for their giant fluffy biscuits and strip of hash browns. Though I go back and forth between their pancakes and the biscuits. I probably should order both sometime. While eating, some of the managers came by to see how I was doing. The GM was super nice as was the rest of the staff. They seem to have a few opening bugs to figure out, but from my first impression, it looks like they're a good addition to the dining options in the area. Folks be prepared for massive portions and super friendly service from the Black Bear crew! WOW! I've have not dined in a Black Bear diner before and I was so impressed with this crew's service and the excellent quality food! The menu has loads of options but be warned the portions are ginormous! You'll definitely have leftovers. The service is awesome! This is the diner's opening week at this location so it's packed! We were able to snag a couple seats at the counter and let me tell you the seats at the counter are adorable and very comfortable unlike most coffee shop counter's seats. We got to watch first hand the hustle of the food coming out of the kitchen to table. They're fast and accurate, well done! My friend and I really enjoyed our lunch here. I had corned beef hash with eggs-breakfast, which is served all day. My friend the deluxe tri tip sandwich. Both entrees were awesome, yes, leftovers boxed up for later. Also, the make their biscuits homemade and they're the size of my head! They're delicious too! Stop by Colma some time and visit this location, they're awesome here! It's a sort of stack of two sweet-cream pancakes, two slices of thick-cut bacon, two eggs (over easy in our case), and two link sausages. Quite good. - Chicken Taco Salad. (Ground beef is also available.) This one was something of a disappointment. Chicken breast and the usual salad fillings: two kinds of lettuce; tomatoes, onions; black olives; cheddar and jack cheese; jalapeños; avocados; cilantro; and salsa. The tortilla bowl, described on the menu as crispy, was actually oily and rather soggy. Certainly perfectly edible, but I've had far better. - Root beer float. read more
