This past weekend we had a taste for some late-night breakfast food and decided to make our way to this relatively new Black Bear location. We'd tried it a week before (during the day) and it was insanely crowded. However, despite the notoriously slow service (and the odd lights that infrequently but distractingly flashed like cameras - a known issue we were told) the food was decent. On this night though, at one hour before close, the place was half-empty even though people were up front waiting for tables... waiting for anyone, really, because nobody was working the register. Why? Apparently they were severely short-staffed. That said, we finally got to put our name in (despite a 30 minute wait in the offing) and I decided to go wash up. My walk to the restroom was revelatory... I've seen messy, but I've never seen *so much debris* scattered *everywhere*! Debris under the tables, on the tables, next to the tables, plates piled high on the tables towards the back. It was a disaster area. Then there was the bathroom... Well, "we're number one!" might be a rallying cry at times, but it needn't be descriptive of every free surface. Whoever decided the fold-down changing table was suitable as an impromptu urinal really needs to evaluate their life choices. Also, in an environmentally friendly but medically dubious turn of events, the entire room had gone "paperless". I gave my hands a quick rinse and made my way out and to the front. We immediately left and went to another place instead, a place that, though mundane, was not suffering from neglect. Had a certain famous chef been in attendance, he would've clapped bread upon ears and with a precisely bleeped invective, declared the place a most unsavory sandwich and shut the place down for the night if not the week. There is no excuse for any of it - if you're that understaffed then you close early, get the place cleaned up, and make a plan to hire more people ASAP and throttle back seating in the meantime. You don't let it become a disgusting mess. read more

Wait time was 10mins - not bad Food wait time was over 30mins. We were starving and my baby was not happy after the 30mins mark. She ran out of things to tear up. Service Granted, it was busy but our server kept forgetting things. He came to tell us that our food was on the way, but it took another additional 20mins. When it finally came, we asked for a plate to share. He came back with other stuff and forgot the plate. We asked again. He came back with our biscuits and forgot the plate. -____- he only came and checked on us once. We had to walk over to him to get a box and our check. Horrible! From the service, to the lack of cleanliness and the cold food I wouldn't even give it any stars. I had a bad experience my first trip and the manager on duty Janae did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation. I called The next day and spoke with Scott. He asked us to give it another try on him and to let them make it right...... WRONG!! We went back and this time was worse than the first. NEVER AGAIN!! Both visits they were out of tri tip which is what I wanted. They even ran out of lemonade!So I ordered the pot roast instead. My food came 25 minutes after the rest of my family's food and it was like cubes of reheated meat that I couldn't even swallow. Two of my family members ordered the chicken fried steak which was dried up and served with dry cold pasta and luke warm mashed potatoes. Both orders were sent back and heated in the microwave. My sons order came with no bacon which he simply asked for them to add the bacon. They took his plate to the back and over 20 minutes later they brought it back with bacon but no cheese or sauce or anything. His actually came back after my old pot roast. We never got asked if we wanted refills and had to get up to get ask for them ourselves. Again the manager was non apologetic and yes, it was Janae again. Needless to say I witnessed others complaining as well. She was very rude and did not have any kind of handle on the chaos which is supposed to be a restaurant. The other orders on the screen were all flashing red as we were seated close to the bar. We watched an order of onion rings sit under the warmer for 28 minutes before they were picked up and served. The only positive thing I can say is that there was a server there by the name of Casey. He was not our server but graciously got us our drinks when we got up ourselves to get them. He even made it a point to go out of his way to come over to our table to see if there was anything else we needed. Corporate may want to think about moving him up the chain as his service was much more customer friendly than the manager. On a final note, the bathroom is located in the back kinda down a corridor. There is a table back there where two of the staff were doing a little make out session . The bathrooms were almost as disgusting as the food. What a shame as Black Bear was a place we were excited was opening near us. I truly hope that someone will come in and get this Place running as it should be. read more

They made sure that we were enjoying our meals and were always open for questions and special requests. We've always been a BBD Fan, having eaten at Reno as our first experience...never failed us. I am shocked at how crummy this place Is! Food arrived barely warm. Restaurant is filthy. Service from check in to bussing the tables is totally incompetent! When every thing is this bad it must be the management! Food tasted good as long as you can get past the crust on the scrambled eggs and don't want a hot meal. When this place first opened, we attempted to try it out but each time there was a long wait. So tonight we are out and about running an errand and stopped by here. We checked in and was told it would be about a 20 minute wait. Cool. Within 20 minutes we were called and sat down at a half booth. We viewed the newspaper menu and made our decision on what to get. 15+ minutes and no one came up to our table and asked if we wanted any thing to drink while still deciding. We waited another 10-15 minutes when this waiter come up to our table and asked if we have been helped. We said no. He had to nerve to say "well I guess I'll help you since no one is paying attention to you guys" EXCUSE ME you guess? we ignored his rude comment and I asked for a coffee and my hubby asked for lemonade. We also ended up ordering our meals; I ordered the Pecan Crusted Trout with a salad and the hubby ordered the Country Benedict. we got our drinks shortly after and I got my salad. tick toc tick toc. While waiting to be asked if we need a refill or if I am done with my salad, we were observing other people being seated and waiters/waitresses passing us up as well as the manager, we asked a worker if we can speak to the manager because the wait for just being asked if we were ready to order took 15+ minutes. the manager walked over as if she knew what would come next. Her response was that she would check the window for our meal. uh no thanks, we want to pay for the salad, coffee and lemonade. The manager who wasn't at all empathic or very apologetic said, its taken care of. that was it. Poor service with employees who act like this place is a 5 star restaurant and they are doing the customers a favor to eat there, a manager who seems like she is used to people complaining and her heart has turned black from all the negativity from customers that she has no care in the world if you have been waiting for over 15+ minutes and worker who also don't give a crap about their jobs or the people who walk in expecting great service and great food. Note to the workers: if you see people sitting down, no longer viewing newspaper/menu, do not have drinks or even water on their table how about you walk over there and ask, would you like to order a drink while waiting or let me find your server for you. I know there is a pandemic, but -- We all ordered steak and were disappointed. For $25, very thin steaks. I ordered medium rare and it was well done. Next steak was raw. We ordered a burger to go. They didn't prepare it and waitress looked at the bill and insisted we didn't pay for it because it wasn't on the bill. I showed her it was on the bill and it had been paid. She walked away and didn't update us on whether we were getting our burger or not. I called over another waitress to check on it for us. She was very apologetic. I think it would have been nice if our original waiter or our new waitress would have let us know that he had to leave. No transition and that's why no burger to go. Nothing special about the steak or the salad dressing. My friends who have eaten here in the past were very disappointed. The mashed potatoes were good. read more

I ve been to different black bear and impress with the service and food. I was so excited when I saw this place opened. Today we came here and boy is crowded. Yet when we get in lots of empty table. I asked several times they mentioned that there not enough servers. We wait for 1 hour and 15 min which initially promised for 45 min. I know that this site just open about 3-4 weeks, but I hope that you not open when you are not ready to serve your own space capacity. read more

Second time coming here, first time was ok.. very busy an crowded. Right when restaurants re opened during in COVID. The first tome the lady working manager was very professional and directed her staff as they were busy. Overall looked liked a fine running diner. . So here is the reason for my rating on this location. While food is really good I have eaten there about 15 times since the pandemic inside and out and EVERY time either me or someone in my group ended up sick after eating there! I do not know if they use MSG or some secret spices that have MSG or derivatives of of that chemical compound but people end up feeling sick and bloated right after eating there and then spend the day visiting the bathroom afterwards. Maybe it is something in the cleaning process? But this has happened EVERY time we go there and I wrote the BBD corporate asking them if they used MSG or some type of "flavor enhancers" and they would not reply. This goes for sandwiches, salads, burgers, breakfasts, everything, so there IS a something in there people get sick from??? Sadly I have to give 1 star because eating to only get sick later is no fun and waste of my hard earned money! read more

First time visit and my last unfortunately. On a quiet Monday afternoon I thought service would be better. It took an hour for my Turkey club to come out. I didn't order it with fries, but a salad. The salad came out way before so I don't understand why it took an hour to make a turkey club on a slow day. Our server didn't address the long wait either. First of all, waiting and service is TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!Even though there was only few customers eating and there were plenty of vacant tables, they can't sit the people (the door was already blocked because there's a lot of people waiting already ). The man, who's calling out people to be seated made us seated LAST even though we were there before them. Then this lady, who seated us, got the guts to answer me,didn't even wait for me to finish talking)I'm just bringing up my concern about their slow and failed systems. This is my fourth time here and every visit keeps getting better. Maddie, Jason and now serving with excellence and a smile . Just what I look for! Great place for family dinner. Food is amazing! If your a breakfast person like me I recommend the Ham 2 over easy eggs wheat toast and a side of strawberries. Came here on a Sunday around 3:30pm. Had to wait about 30 mins. They sat us but didn't give us any menus. When we finally asked, they gave us one menu. There were two of us. We waited another 30 mins and was wondering who is going to serve us. The table next to us sat down after us and they already ordered. Finally someone came and didn't apologize for the wait. Another 30 mins went by and our food still has not arrived. I had to flag our server down and ask him to check for us. 10 mins later, he came back with our plates. Luckily the food tasted good. We've been here several times, and it's usually ok (not great, but better than Denny's or iHop). Today we happened to get a server, Ricardo, who just wasn't on his game. It took a while for him to come greet us and take drink orders. One of my kids ordered a chocolate milk (but there was barely any chocolate in it). My coffee was nasty (old, burnt). And I had to ask for cream 4x. I ordered eggs over-hard, but was served runny ones instead. We only had two place settings, for a party of three (neither hostess or server was attentive to provide extra set). Even after food was served, we had to grab silverware from other table. It took about 15 mins for food to be served, even though the restaurant was half empty. I was offered a coffee refill after we had already finished our meal. So my family and I love Black Bear Diner. We usually go to the one in Tracy when we are in that area. So we were very happy when they opened one close to home. Knowing they would be crowded for the first month or two since their grand opening, we decided to wait to eat there. Maybe we should have waited longer. We walked in and was told it would be a 15 minute wait for a party of 4. 20 minutes later we still haven't been called. Wife went up to ask and was told that we're next. That didn't happen as they called another family of 4 that walked in way after us. We got up and told them that we were here before that family and they apologized stating there was a mix up. How when you go by the names on the list by order? They sat us down right away and the hostess kept apologizing profusely. The waitress was courteous and took our order promptly. Next thing you know we get our entrees, except for my daughter. More on that later. So you're probably asking why we didn't order a salad or appetizers. We did and those came in after we got our entrees. Which brings me to my daughter not getting her dinner when we got ours. Our waitress forgot to tell us that they were out of the pot pie. So she had to wait a little bit longer for her chicken and waffles. Hopefully all of this is due to them still on the learning curve from being open only a couple of months ago. read more

I gave BBD another chance because of how much I loved it at other locations. Went again to this same location and was disappointed again. Someone at my table ordered a dish that was supposed to come with fruit. They never got their fruit until they asked. Then we were told they were out of fruit and asked if they wanted an apple instead. Since...when was apple not a fruit? My meal was also supposed to come with bread. I never got it. Asked about it three times before they finally came by with it after everyone was already done with their meal and we were about to get the check. Service is just awful. The food is bad. It's such a shame because the franchise in other locations is excellent. Guess I'll have to travel far to get the good experience and great food. read more

Just left. It was so bad. Half the place was empty (Saturday night at 5:30) and they quoted us an hour and made us wait an hour. 10+ empty tables. So we sit, and order and it takes 25+ minutes to get our food. The only wine is boxed white zin. They ran out of beer. The pot pie was cold in the middle and inedible. They don't give crayons or pens with kids menus that have coloring pages. We are super sad because we wanted to like this new place to add a new place to our rotation. read more

I came here for brunch and had a great time. Service and food was amazing, large portions and delicious. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. Everything on that menu is available. I had the onion ring and chicken pot pie. Best onion ring ever, it had the right amount of batter surrounding the thick cut onion. Most onion rings are all batter , no onion, but this had onion + thin batter! :) My chicken pot pie, didn't come out until an hour into the meal. Our waitress already warned me it would take 20 mins and also came back and asked if I still wanted to wait for it, since it was taking longer than expected. I was with friends and we had good conversation going, so I told her, I'll wait. The pot pie came out and everyone was drooling over it. It was freshly made from scratch, hot from the oven. The top layer was flakey and crispy, once my spoon went in, the burst of steam and the smell of chicken broth just came right out. Perfect amount of carrots, peas and chicken! I highly recommend the chicken pot pie. We finished about 11:45am and there was already a 30-40min wait. I recommend going earlier, to beat the rush. I've eaten at other Black Bear Diners and never have I been disappointed the way I was today. I understand the place is new and training everyone is hard however I think they should get a "Experienced Manager" in there immediately. The wait was 40 minutes, no biggie it just opened so the wait was expected. We sat down and placed our order with #Waiter 1. 15 minutes later Waiter 2 came along and notified us that they were rotating stations. Hmmm okay. He then proceeded to double check our drink and food order. (So this whole time they have not been working on our food) It took the waiter about 10 minutes to bring our drinks. 30 minutes after that a waitress came to bring our food which the didn't bring out one of our orders. Another 15 minutes they finally brought out my daughters meal. Waiter 2 never came back to check on us to see if we needed anything else. I wanted a refill on my drink and had to flag down Waiter 1 who then told Waiter 2 and another 10 minutes went by. He brought me the check but no drink. I kindly paid and left a small tip. This place is a mad house which the manager clearly cannot get it together. I went to the bathroom and seen the manager in back smoking when in fact he should have been helping his staff keep things together. I also noticed there were plenty of tables available which I didn't understand why there was so long of a wait. I literally watched two separate tables walk out and leave. We had a 40 minute wait which wasn't bad cause the hostess set proper expectations on the wait. What made it worse was that after we got seated, we were helped by someone possibly in training, and we get it, it just opened so we gave the benefit of the doubt. He asked what drinks we wanted, I asked if there was a beer selection in which he responded yes but had to go find out the selection. He came back only saying they had Budweiser and bud light and another ipa you forgot, which was racer 5 I believe. I declined on the beer cause who drinks bud light or Budweiser. *i later found out they had Stella as I walked to the bathroom and saw a table with it which kind of annoyed me as well. But anyways. He took our order for food and all was great, so we thought. We waited for an hour for our food, whereas people who sat after us were getting their food before us. And mind you, we were starving so we started to get frustrated. The server came back a total of 4 times asking if we were doing okay.. we only had our waters. So you can guess if we were doing okay or not. When the food finally came out, we didn't get everything all at once, I finished my steak and eggs before my toast even came out. My friends ask for gravy on the side on both of their country fried steak and well, that didn't happen. It's very unfortunate but I must say my first impression was not a good one. read more

The food was fine and as expected, but..... and this may not be fair because you can't really prove what made you sick, but....2 of our party of 4 were very sick about 33 hours later and the only thing we had in common was eating at Black Bear. Typical Stomach Flu/Norovirus type infection (4-5 days of hell, missed work, etc). Considering we only have meeting at Black Bear as the thing in common, its hard to imagine any other cause for our common illness. One added negative: $3.50 is too much for a soda.....taking cues from Movie Theaters on your soda prices? read more

Wow, terrible service. Forgot our drinks. Then didn't see our waitress (Jasmine) at all. Had to ask another waiter what happened. Then my steak came, COLD and they forgot any utensils to eat it with. Had to ask for a fork of all things at this point. Finally found out they are shorthanded and people were being forced to work overtime and not allowed to go home. What a great place to dine in. We arrived after lunch but, still the waiting time was over 30 minutes. Love that they have FCFS at the counter. Friendly staff and even the Manager greeted us. Food selection was excellent, wait time was a awhile which I suggest counter service should be put in first as I saw workers on their lunch break with minimal time? Another suggestion is keeping a clean micro cloth to periodically wipe down the order board after each use. (it was quite filthy to see) Drinks were kept full and service was great. On Saturday morning, August 31st, 2019, I just got off work at 7am. I had a hankering for steak and eggs with country taters. I could've stopped at Breakers in Pacifica or Nicks. Didn't want sea food that day. I also wanted to eat closer to home. I stopped at Dennys in Daly City. They closed down. I googled nearby eaterys. Black Bear Diner was close by. Therefore I went there. Arrived shortly after 9am. I bellied up to the empty counter. I asked a staff member if it was ok. It was ok. I got my coffee within a couple of minutes. I told coffee person I was ready to order. Server said someone will take that order. Ok. I waited & waited. I asked someone if I should sit somewhere else to get service. Staff said it'll be soon. Ok. I wanted to get my order in before I visit the restroom. I couldn't wait. I went to restroom. Upon returning, I continued waiting. At 9:25 I gave up. I found a manager. I explained to her what transpired. I just wanted my steak and eggs! I informed manager that I was very disappointed. I told her I was going to the Bayside Cafe on Bayshore. I arrived at Bayside Cafe at 9:40 am. Ordered & I was eating my steak and eggs at 9:50 am! I've been to other Black Bear diners with family & folks. This was my first time at the Colma location. So my review is a based off food and service. Me and my daughter went in on Monday around 10 and it was pretty busy. It took us a while to be "greated" which wasn't even a greating. More like a follow me this way and do you need a kid menu? Anyways our waitress immediately came up to us and asked if we wanted to order drinks and food or if we needed time. I said time , it was our first time there and the menu was huge! She walked away and I kid you not 2 minutes went by and she came back. I was like uhm more time please. She walked away , asked the other table a question and turned back around and asked if I was ready... by this time I was like okay let me just make up a question to ask her lol. We ordered drinks which she grabbed and I said a couple more minutes. Uhm she left for 10minutes!! I was like is this a joke? We kept waiving her down and asking other waiters to get her. She finally came back and I was like you disappeared and she was like yea sorry I got busy. To me that was irritating. So for the food, the portions was big. I ordered a breakfast sandwich pretty much and for some odd reasons the cheddar cheese was left off, no biggie. It lacked flavor tho. The hot sausage was bomb af!
