Typical diner with a juke box if you want to play a song you like. They had fast and nice service. The portions are HUGE, but there is a section for smaller plates if you are not too hungry. I went with a breakfast meal - pancakes, eggs, and bacon. The pancake is delicious, but when you lift it to put butter it breaks apart. Thick cut bacon is delicious and they make the eggs perfectly to your order. We also decided to get a plate of half sweet potato and half regular fries. We've been to a few Black Bear diners. They are always a good choice for breakfast. Today, we had an omelet and the chicken fried steak Benedict, as well as oreo cheesecake. All we delicious and had very large portions. We have potatoes and a biscuit as leftovers. Service was quick and friendly. Booths are a bit oddly constructed, so one side has less space than the other. They could use a bit more space between the booth seats and the tables. read more

It was because we had a large party of 7 which they were able to accommodate at 9am with no wait. First time, I ordered the Joe's Hobo omelet which was humongous and came with all the meats- ham, sausage and bacon with spinach. I declined cheese but still tasted good. Second time around I got a pastrami sandwich and my husband got the club sandwich. Pretty good on both. They also have bloody Mary's and mimosas! Great place for breakfast. It's not the place I would generally crave..but it's a cute place if you have never been. Service is good.

I've been to other Black Bear Diners where the service and food have been better. That said, our experience was okay. Ordered chicken & waffles and the Saturday Prime Rib special. I thought the chicken & waffles would be above-average and the prime rib would be below. Surprisingly it was the opposite. The chicken strips were overly breaded and dry, we expected that, but the waffle was pretty bad, basically a pancake in disguise. Not crispy at all, should have been left in the waffle iron for another full minute. Add syrup and it got soggy, disappointing. Side of eggs over medium were perfect. The prime rib itself was surprisingly decent. We asked for medium rare and the server warned us it had been in the oven for awhile so medium might be the best we could expect. Bonus points for the warning. The prime rib was preceded by a terrible salad, just some shredded iceberg and a couple tomato slices. Baked potato was a basic baked potato. The service started out mostly ok, friendly & informative. Our server checked in with us after the food was served, it was easy to order a refill, he even brought one without being asked. It wasn't that busy, way more empty seats than filled, but it took 15 minutes to get the bill (-1). They were just hanging out near the register. Overall it was okay, could have been better. $72 including 18% tip. Probably would not eat here again though. read more

I wanted to try the biscuits and gravy I see on TV commercials. The waiter Andrew was good. Nice smile and informative of the meals available. My Biscuits and gravy was missing the GRAVY. OMG! The potatoes were luke warm. Andrew the waiter offered to correct the plate and bring me new ones. I declined the offer because I was in a hurry to go and visit Mumsy in Gilroy. I also ordered a Hamburger and fries to go for her and cooked well done without the ketchup and mustard so that was good to take. My coffee was nice and hot, Service was great and not too many people in there. They had plenty of staff to take care of the small crowd of customers. I will be back and did not mind eating my luke warm potatoes. They were delish with the bell peppers and onions and the Breakfast club Biscuits was not too bad except for the missing gravy. Always a treat. Wow how the BlackBear Brand has grown to so many states and locations. The portions are large so come with a big appetite. And as with anything these days a full wallet. Mini volcano Went at 11amish on a Friday and service was fast friendly and attentive. Our wait was none. We were seated as soon as we walked in. Given the classic newspaper menu which makes everything look and sound good I ended up settling on the mini volcano half the size of the regular it hit the spot. Basic tried and true diner food. The syrup was very tasty and I ordered a homemade biscuit to pour honey over but should of ate it warm as it cooled down it got more flaky and dry. I recommend this place early on a weekday I wouldn't want to come here on a weekend have to wait to be seated. The line on a sat or Sunday is always out the door. If I can read this zero, I definitely would I never have any kind of complaints at all but this time it was a horrible experience even from the moment we sat down that the lady tossed the menus at us to a grumpy old man that should not be serving any food we then ordered our food despite us already wanting to walk out we got burgers and we ordered them medium, but they came well done the portioning is also ridiculous. My daughter got the same amount of fries that I did but I was paying $17 for my plate. If that's the case I should've just ordered off the kids menu. Apparently the portions are exactly the same. Aside from that I'm light skin and don't look like I speak Spanish. We were sitting right there where the kitchen crew was at, and they were talking shit about us, not knowing that we understand Spanish completely and speak it as well. I was able to flag down someone about the error, but they seemed skeptical until they checked. No apology for the error, but I did receive the missing food. We had a wonderful Christmas Day dinner of prime rib catered by Black Bear Diner. Rather than order online, we spoke to Mike, asst mgr, who helped us select what each of our six guests requested. The prime rib, mashed potatoes, salad, and so on were warm and boxed to go so that we could serve family style. We transferred boxes to platters and serving dishes, which we popped into the oven set low. The food was super warm when guests arrived. Comments ranged from "yummy" to "magnifique." We were seated within minutes on a Friday night. I love that the restaurant is very family friendly. The staff were so friendly and made my daughter feel so special! Our waiter Marlene was frequently checking in and making sure we had everything we needed and were satisfied with our meals. She even asked us if she could offer our little one a surprise treat after our meal. How thoughtful! We ordered Friday/Saturday Primerib specials that I would definitely order again. Desserts were ordered to go so the verdict is pending on how the deserts are but I'm sure they are good. My lady got the Club and come w/Fries.. looked amazing and tasted great but the fries were off the heezy for sheezy! I got the NY Steak and Eggs. Asked for the Steak Medium Rare. The Steak and Eggs was brought to the table and when I cut the steak, it wasn't what I asked for but the server did not hesitate to correct it. Few mins later he brought out my order and was way perfect. I'm giving 5 Stars because of the service and despite their mistake, the kitchen did their thang to correct the issue and our server was more than great handling the issue. Mike and his staff at Black Bear diner are second to none! I travel the states frequently and was pleased to find this diner. The staff is friendly, professional and a joy to be around. It's evident the care, courtesy and quality customer service the second you walk in the door. I am not one to leave a negative review but not busy on a Sunday morning should have been my red flag. I came here to get breakfast and pretty much the most bland barely room temperature food I have had in a while. I chose not to send back but probably should have. Potatoes were not very good, toast wasn't toasted enough and bacon was just ok. The only thing warm was the eggs and coffee. Not sure what happened here as I use to come here all the time and it was much better. I will not be repeating a visit to this location. Our server was wonderful! I feel awful he has to work in such a dump! He's far too sweet, quick and efficient to be working there with the rest of the sloths. The large and in charge manager was chatting up one of the girls the whole time at the counter while we were there. The poor waiter was slammed and he clearly needed help, and he got zero from that manager who could have at least directed the girl who he was chatting up to help. So, the food..... my bf ordered the NY steak, it tasted old overcooked and our dog was happy about that. The potato was likely from the day before, as was the sad discolored overcooked vegetables. The other two of us ordered BLT's with avocado on sourdough toast. Easy enough, right? The bacon was cold, (the kind of cold where the grease has a pasty film on it) the bread was almost toasted and cold, the tomato was mushy, but they were generous with the avocado. My 10 year old niece couldn't eat the French fries because she said they didn't taste good. She never not eats her fries. The salad was, meh. We love our Monterey Black Bear diner and the many others we have visited, have all been good and well managed. In addition to the Black Bear Diner, there are several other places to consider on Leavesley Road in Gilroy. It's a nice looking area literally right off the freeway. The Black Bear Diner was perfect for what we were looking for--a light lunch. We each had half of a sandwich with all of the fixings and a cup of soup. Of course, they have a full menu filled with everything from burgers to fish n chips. No complaints about the quality or price! Service was great. My family and I came on a Saturday afternoon, around 4pmish after spending the day at the local festival. It wasn't busy, maybe five tables occupied. The first thing we all noticed was the glass counter with the fresh made pies on display. We didn't wait long for drinks and food. Hot food came out hot and cold food came out cold. I had the chicken apple sausage scramble. It was made with egg whites, spinach, jack cheese, mushrooms and avocado. It was was light and full of flavor. Hubby had the deluxe Bob's big bear burger. It was pretty massive, but still juicy and tasty. Room for dessert? Yes, please. Hubby had the chocolate lava cake too. Ed was our server and he was awesome.
