My family and I were in on the 16th for my nephews 3rd birthday. We had come from Gilory Gardens Christmas Celebration... We were cold and hungry. Mary Jo was our waitresses. She was fanatic and brought out my nephews plate first. After dinner, she asked permission if he could have ice cream, she brought him the HUGEST ice cream Sundae! There was enough for all 6 of us! Mary Jo was amazing and kept checking on us, refills were plenty, she was so polite and courteous, and all the staff was extremely polite to my nephew! Very disappointing dinner. I ordered the tri- tip and I think they took it from a retired dairy cow because it was the worse I have ever had. This is the first bad meal I have had at any of the Black Bear Diners. They gave me plenty of meat but it was like trying to eat an old leather boot. I think I will just stick to Breakfasts at Black Bear Diners.... they are never disappointing :) or it could just be at this location. read more

I have finally given up on Black Bear. Over the last two or three years they have steadily gone down hill. This review is for breakfast only. Our grandchildren live in Gilroy, so we visit quite often. I haven't had an acceptable meal in the last two years. We only return because the children love the ch chip pancakes. What do they know? : ) I wonder at times if the cook (I refuse to call him/her a chef) knows what the heck their doing. I asked for my hash browns crispy, they came back slightly cooked on the outside and raw on the inside. I sent them back (which I rarely do) and they came back cooked nearly the same. I gave up and left most on the plate. On another visit sausage and eggs, I almost gagged on the uncooked sausage. Left them on the plate along with uncooked hash browns. The last straw was last Thursday, they actually screwed up my eggs! How the hell do you screw up eggs! The hash browns were overcooked on the outside and mush on the inside! Enough is enough! I'm sure I can find a restaurant that does ch chip pancakes. Also, their portions have been cut drastically. Not worth it anymore. read more

Had brunch there today with a party of 10 and it was not the best experience. I had to ask two different people to get my place setting and the wait for our food was not the best. The food for our party was extremely staggered, a couple that had come in well after we were seated got their food before I did! gilroy is home to me. and im glad we are being known for more things than just garlic and the outlets. black bear diner is a must breakfast joint. come early for breakfast before the outlets open and you can walk off your gigantic meal. the concept of the place is old fashioned...and i love it. the menu is like a news paper...literally. made of recycled paper and all. they have a wide variety of foods from omelets to steak to pancakes n waffles. you can get pretty much any breakfast item...and lunch! they have the best chicken fried steak EVER. and if you get the big bear meal....this chicken fried steak is BIGGER than your head. no joke. also comes with a huge fluffy biscuit and hash browns. pancakes are always delicious and so are their omelets. ive only come here for breakfast so im not sure about lunch n dinner. service is always great here. very welcoming people. everyone seems to know each other here...gilroy is a small place. usually packed saturday/sunday mornings but the wait usually isnt too bad. sometimes service can be a little slow. but its crowded and fast paced, i dont mind. read more

honestly, i really wanted to like this place.. actually, i do like the atmosphere.. the decorations are cute.. i came here with the BF we both ordered the same thing.. eggs and corned beef.. the beef was probably the best thing.. everything else was alright.. my BF didn't get much hash browns, on the other hand, i got a lot.. obviously they didn't split it fair enough.. my toast was so burnt! so i asked for unburned toast and it seriously took 10 minutes for toast. come on!! i finished my whole meal until i got my toast.. i really wanted dessert too.. and was expecting our waitress to ask if we wanted any, but she just dropped the receipt on the table and left.. lame.. she never came back to give me my toast, someone else did.. and she never came back to refill our water.. then i paid some lady (which looked like a manager) she asked how everything was.. i said it was ok.. she didn't bother to ask why or anything.. good job caring about customer satisfaction! read more

Went to dinner at black bear in gilroy and we ordered our food the waitress Named jasmine was wonderful. It took over an hour after we ordered and she came back saying she was so sorry it was taking so long but the kitchen was backed up so she gave us corn bread to curve our hunger. Then we received our food . I got a pit pie and my husband got the special prime rib . His mashed potatoes were cold and the meat had so much fat on it it was a waste of good meat. We sent the potato's back and they were look warm but we ate it anyways. I complained and they took some money off the bill . We usually enjoy our time there but it was not good tonight. No refills, even when asked. Had to ask for them to serve me our food after sitting under the lights for 8 min. It was my first time here, the wait wasn't to bad for a Sunday morning, our waiter Liz seemed anxious and rushed, but over all she was great and just on it! She did offered me a bears choice with what I ordered but she was uninformed and I ended not being able to do what she told me. We ordered drinks 2 waters and two orange juices and our meal order. The freshly squeezed orange juice is delicious, the drinks also came to our table very quickly. Our waiter kept checking up on our table saying our food is almost ready. The food came quickly took like 15-20 minutes. I ordered French toast 2 eggs and hash browns and everything was delicious and a very good portion! GIANT portions. I ordered a 'small' plate 1/2 ham sandwich and split pea soup. I receive a bowl of soup and a regular sized 1/2 sandwich. My guest ordered the 'small portion' club sandwich and received a regular sized diner meal. I can't imagine what the regular portions consist of. Food is good. Service is good. :-) read more

This restaurant is a very good place to eat. They have some big portions here so they can be shared between two people unless you are like me and generally eat as much as two people. I went to my first black beer in Oregon many years ago in my way back from Banf National Park in Canada. We enjoyed being there and my family liked the food. I have been in a few different Black Bear Restaurants during the past few years. This one in Gilroy, I have probably visited four or five times. Last time I was here I thought the waitress was rude. I was very hungry and I got out of there and cancelled my order. It seems tonight so far this waitress was very nice. They seated me quickly and took my order right away. The salad and beer came very fast. Ranch dressing and Sierra Nevada kind of make things happen. I ordered the special which is New York Steak and Shrimp. They are still cooking it. Ok now I am done with the steak and shrimp with a few comments. The steak is of course not a 5 star restaurant stake but for the special price, it is not so bad. The shrimps were small but crunchy and tasty. I topped it all off with some strawberry cream pie which was not crusty or overwhelmingly sweet. Good for my desire to keep a low profile with carbs. But what is most interesting about Black Bear Diner is the tendency to make you feel like a black bear. The food is bearish as they say on walls street. I am bullish as an investor but I guess I am an in closet bear when it comes to eating. That might be all in line with liking to eat at Black Bear and keep going there. Their portions are huge and always great but tonight I didn't like my dinner when the manager came over she was very professional and accommodating and funny to boot! Poor receptionist, first impressions are key, ask how many in our party, and forgot about us. No other parties waiting. Only when she looked over to the waiting area, she remembered us. You won't find any place better, for good authentic American breakfast. My favorite is the Southern Scramble. They make their own sausage patties and they are out of this world. Stopped in for brunch, Tuesday round 11:30. Sat down right away. Water and coffee to start, coffee was on point. Order half turkey sandwich and a cup of chili, no cheese no mayo. Got the order right and I didn't have to tear my sandwich apart to scrape off the mayo or spoon the cheese off of my chili. Chili wasn't greasy at all and the cup is the perfect portion. The lettuce, tomato and onion on the sandwich were fresh and crisp! My friend who's first time here was today loved her food as well. Will def be back! read more

I cannot believe that this place has such poor service being in such close proximity to their regional headquarters. I have eaten here four times and it is always the same. No I am not a glutton for punishment but one of our relatives loves the food here and every time they are in town we must eat here. Food is average however service is poor.
